C
hildren’s Hospital Los Angeles Board of
Trustees Co-chair Marion Anderson and her
husband, John E. Anderson, have made an
unprecedented and transformative $50 million gift
to support the new hospital building at Children’s
Hospital Los Angeles. In recognition of their extraordinary generosity, the doors to this new building opened
in July, just weeks before John’s passing at age 94, as the
Marion and John E. Anderson Pavilion. This gift serves
as the capstone to Living Proof: the Campaign for Children’s
Hospital Los Angeles, which Marion has co-chaired to
raise more than $1 billion in support of the hospital’s
facilities, clinical care and research.
“We are thrilled and thankful for Marion and John’s
gift, the latest in a long line of generous support from
these two leaders of the Los Angeles philanthropic
community,” said Richard D. Cordova, FACHE, president and chief executive officer of Children’s Hospital
Los Angeles. “Marion has been one of the key leaders
of this institution for the past two decades, and the
Andersons’ philanthropic support is just one aspect of
how they’ve helped make us the best children’s hospital
in the western United States.”
The Marion and John E. Anderson Pavilion at
Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is one of the most
technologically advanced health care environments for
children anywhere. A model family-centered care environment, every aspect of the building was designed with
children and families in mind.
“We feel so fortunate to be able to make this gift to
the children of Southern California and beyond,” said
Marion. “Children’s Hospital Los Angeles saves lives and
offers hope to tens of thousands of children and families
each year. This gift is our way of saying thank you to
everyone at the hospital. Their work is amazing and John
and I couldn’t think of a more deserving institution.”
The Anderson Pavilion was dedicated in a heartfelt
ceremony attended by Children’s Hospital supporters,
leadership, volunteers, staff and community leaders

on June 23. Among the many community leaders and
children’s hospital representatives who spoke, Marion
shared her elation at seeing the building open.
“This new building is special not only because of
its architectural beauty or because it houses the most
advanced medical technology, but because of the children and families who will seek hope within the gentle
arms of its sturdy walls,” said Marion.
In addition to their steadfast care and stewardship of
Children’s Hospital, the Andersons have been community supporters for many years. John was chairman of
Topa Equities, Ltd., which owns more than 42 businesses
involved in agriculture, insurance, real estate, wholesale beverage distribution and automotive dealerships.
Marion is vice chairman of Topa Equities, Ltd., and is
an active member of the University of California, Los
Angeles Anderson School of Management Board of
Visitors. John and Marion were life-long supporters of
the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles.
Marion has served on the Children’s Hospital Los
Angeles Board of Trustees for 22 years. She also serves
Children’s Hospital as a member of the steering committee of the New Hospital Building Campaign, the
Development Advisory Campaign Cabinet and The
Saban Research Institute Committee. Regarding their
continued dedication to the hospital, Marion says the
pleasure has been all hers.
“This has been a labor of love, and I’ve had such great
partners on this journey.”
“Marion and John were committed to Children’s
Hospital Los Angeles and this campaign from day
one,” said John D. “Jack” Pettker, Marion’s co-chair
on the hospital’s Board of Trustees and the Living Proof
Campaign. “After 22 years of service, their dedication
and leadership is still evident with this most extraordinary gift. It’s been such a pleasure to partner with her
and to witness the passion that she and John shared for
this great hospital.”

Living Proof: The Campaign for Children’s Hospital
i
n 2003, it was only a dream: build a state-of-the-art new hospital building,
support a thriving world-class pediatric research facility and nurture and
grow the outstanding clinical programs and medical specialties that are at
the core of the mission of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
To make this dream come true, hospital leaders launched what would become
a historic endeavor—Living Proof: The Campaign for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
The campaign’s initial goal was $350 million, but by 2006, more than $500
million had been raised. Fueled by the campaign’s success and a need to raise
more funds to build a world-class hospital facility, the Board of Trustees then
raised the target to $750 million.
The community continued to rise to the challenge. To date, Living Proof has
raised more than $1 billion—the most successful campaign in the hospital’s
history and the only single campaign for a freestanding, independent children’s
hospital to raise $1 billion.
“To each and every person who joined us in this amazing endeavor, I
say thank you,” says Richard D. Cordova, FACHE, president and CEO of
Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. “Every day, the people at this hospital strive
to create hope and build a healthier future for each child and family who comes
through our doors. Because of you, that hope—and that future—are possible.”
One of the campaign’s most influential leaders has been Marion Anderson, cochair of the Board of Trustees and the Living Proof Campaign. In May, Marion
and her husband, John E. Anderson, announced a $50 million transformative
gift to name the new hospital building the Marion and John E. Anderson
Pavilion. The Anderson Pavilion opened its doors on July 17.
Along with so many other campaign supporters, the Andersons were inspired
by the children and families of Children’s Hospital.
“As a parent and grandparent, I know that when a child is sick or injured, it’s
traumatic,” Marion says. “I also know that the world-class, family-centered care
environment of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles wraps each child and family in
a security blanket of love, hope and healing.”
The completion of the Anderson Pavilion is only the latest campaign
achievement. Just as important as the new building have been contributions
that supported pediatric research and highly specialized clinical programs,
including the Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases; the Heart
Institute; the Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism; the
Children’s Orthopaedic Center; the CHLA-USC Institute for the Developing
Mind; The Vision Center; medical and nursing education and much more.
In addition, $278.6 million in contributions were unrestricted gifts to support
the hospital’s mission to create hope and build healthier futures.
To date, more than 744,000 individual gifts have been received—an
unprecedented number that represents nearly 20 percent of the population of
the city of Los Angeles.
“This has been a community-wide effort,” says John D. “Jack” Pettker,
co-chair of the Board of Trustees and Living Proof. “The people of Los Angeles
said, ‘Children’s Hospital is an important and valuable community asset, and
we want to be a part of it.’ This hospital belongs to them.”

Los Angeles Surpasses $1 Billion
starting strong
From the beginning, Living Proof has been the beneficiary of tremendous
leadership and support. Back in 2003, Cheryl Saban, PhD, and Haim Saban
stepped forward with a $40 million transformative gift to establish The Saban
Research Institute of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and name The Saban
Research Building. Today, The Saban Research Institute is among the largest
and most productive pediatric research facilities in the United States, with 100
investigators at work on 186 laboratory studies, clinical trials and communitybased research and health services.
At the time, the gift made the Sabans the largest individual donors in the
hospital’s history.
“The children you see in the hallways of Children’s Hospital are our future,”
says Cheryl, who is an honorary trustee. “Over the years, we’ve made it loud
and clear that Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is one of the most important
places to direct philanthropic dollars.”
Contributions to Living Proof also have made it possible for the hospital to
grow key clinical programs and attract and retain world-class physicians and
scientists, explains Walter B. Rose, who co-chaired the Board of Trustees and
Living Proof with Marion before retiring in 2006.
The community recognized the far-reaching impact of the hospital’s mission, he adds.
“If you save a child’s life, there’s a whole lifetime of payoff as that child
becomes a productive member of society,” says Rose, now an honorary trustee.
“That is true impact philanthropy. There’s no better way to give.”
moving forward
With the opening of the Marion and John E. Anderson Pavilion, hospital
leaders are more committed than ever to moving the hospital forward.
Key priorities include growing and expanding the hospital’s research mission, continuing to attract and retain the very brightest physicians, scientists,
nurses and caregivers and being a national leader in pediatric health care reform.
“We are still living in difficult financial times,” Pettker notes. “The challenges
continue, and as always, we can’t do it alone.”
Adds Marion, “This entire campaign has been ‘Living Proof’ that together,
we really can make dreams come true.”

supporters and celebrities at Turn on the
Lights! Walk for Kids, the kick-off event celebrating the opening of the Marion and

more than $1 million for the hospital.
Beginning with a health fair and entertainment in Griffith Park, walkers wound
their way through Los Feliz to the Children’s
Hospital campus. The walk culminated in a
fun-filled street party with food showcasing
the diverse Los Angeles culinary landscape,
countless activities for children and adults,

$5 Million Donors a Cornerstone of the Living Proof Campaign
A
passion to change children’s
lives for the better unites a
diverse group of individuals,
foundations and corporate citizens—
each of whom has given $5 million or
more to Living Proof: the Campaign for
Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
“These significant gifts have helped
propel our campaign forward to
enhance our world-class pediatric hospital,” says Claudia Looney, senior vice
president of Development. “We thank
each of these visionary friends and philanthropists for sharing our dreams.”
Launched in 1984, The Bogart
Pediatric Cancer Research Program
focuses its support on the “bench to
bedside” process—the translation of
scientific discoveries made in the laboratory to useful therapies for patients.
Its seed money has enabled Children’s
Hospital investigators to attract substantial federal funding. The Bogart
Pediatric Cancer Research Program
has committed more than $10 million
to support pediatric cancer research at
Children’ Hospital Los Angeles during
the Living Proof Campaign.
“By advancing the early-stage investigations of innovative scientists, we
are able to jump-start promising new
treatments and cures for children who
desperately need them,” says Joyce
Bogart Trabulus, program co-founder
and a member of the hospital’s Board
of Trustees. “We’re proud to partner
with Children’s Hospital in this important mission.”
The Walt Disney Company was

at the time.
“At Disney, children and families
are at the core of everything we do,
so we are particularly proud to work
with Children’s Hospital to help bring
increased access to world-class pediatric health care and help build a
brighter tomorrow for the children of
Los Angeles,” said Jim Hunt, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Walt Disney Parks and
Resorts Worldwide, and a Children’s
Hospital trustee.
The Ahmanson Foundation, which
has given to Children’s Hospital for
more than four decades, contributed
more than $8 million to the Living Proof
Campaign. “We share a commitment
with Children’s Hospital to invest in a
stronger community,” says William H.
Ahmanson, president of The Ahmanson
Foundation. “This is a place to create
positive change for generations to come.”
Within the Associates and Affiliates,
many dedicated individuals join forces
to raise funds and awareness for
Children’s Hospital. “Our members
have always been farsighted,” says
Bonnie McClure, chairman of the
Associates and Affiliates and a hospital
trustee. “We firmly believe this hospital represents the future of pediatric
medicine, and are deeply committed
to supporting the research happening
at Children’s Hospital that will shape
that future.”

he same company that is helping shape the
future of downtown Los Angeles now is partnering with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles
to build healthier futures for children and families.
AEG, one of the world’s leading sports and entertainment presenters, announced its new philanthropic partnership with Children’s Hospital earlier
this year. When complete in 2013, the commitment

will establish AEG as one of the hospital’s top corporate contributors to the Living Proof Campaign.
The company also will be recognized as a
“Champion for Children,” which honors donors who
have given $5 million or more in support of the newly
opened Marion and John E. Anderson Pavilion.
“Since our global headquarters are located here in
Los Angeles, we feel it is especially important that
we are a part of the fabric of the local community,”
explains Tim Leiweke, president and CEO of AEG.
“We have always believed that our priorities should
include supporting our local communities.”
This spring, AEG took the lead as the hospital’s
corporate partner for the Turn on the Lights! initiative, which celebrated the opening of the Anderson
Pavilion with two events: Dream for Kids: the Grand
Opening Gala, held at L.A. LIVE, and Turn on the
Lights! Walk for Kids.
“The Anderson Pavilion is a critical resource for
the greater Los Angeles region,” Leiweke notes. “For
a child in need of medical treatment, nothing is more
critical to the quality of their life than having adequate access to a state-of-the-art hospital and exceptional medical treatment.”
AEG next will be taking on a key leadership role
in the Noche de Niños fundraising gala, set for fall
of 2012. In addition, the company is reaching out to
its corporate partners, launching a payroll deduction
program to allow employees to support the hospital
and exploring the possibility of a fundraising concert.
AEG develops and operates STAPLES Center,
L.A. LIVE and the Home Depot Center in Carson;
owns outright or owns a portion of the Los Angeles
Kings, the Los Angeles Galaxy and the LA Lakers
sports franchises and is developing Farmers Field, a
downtown stadium, entertainment and convention
center. Worldwide, it owns or is affiliated with more
than 100 sports and entertainment facilities.
The company’s charitable mission aims to improve
the quality of life for children and families and is
closely tied to its overall mission of “giving the world
a reason to cheer.” Over the past decade, AEG has
contributed more than $70 million to charitable,
community and civic programs.
“We are pleased to be working with AEG as our
philanthropic partner,” says Richard D. Cordova,
FACHE, president and CEO of Children’s Hospital.
“AEG’s leadership will go a long way toward creating
hope and building healthier futures for Los Angeles’
children and families. I can’t think of a better reason
to cheer.”

We are deeply grateful to our donors, who enable us to fulfill our mission to create hope and build healthier futures for children in our community and

Through their immense generosity, Living Proof: The Campaign for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles became not only the most successful fundraising effort in Children’s Hospital history, but also the only single fundraising campaign by a freestanding, independent children’s hospital to raise more

the cure rate from 10 percent to 80 percent. Still, one
in five children will not survive the disease today.
The Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation
Clinical Trials Program works with pediatric cancer
programs around the world to test new therapies
aimed at decreasing the toxicity of cancer treatments
while improving patient outcomes and survival rates.
“The doctors at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles
are second to none,” said Jack A. Cross, PCRF board
chairman. “The list of their clinical trial programs,
results, publications and successes is remarkable as
is their commitment to do more, discover more and
never give up. Based on the commitment of PCRF,
they will be in a position to continue and expand the
stunning work they are doing in alleviating suffering
and saving children’s lives.”
PCRF was founded in 1982 to improve the care,
quality of life and survival rate of children with
malignant disease. The foundation has contributed
more than $22 million—including $1.5 million to
Children’s Hospital since 1998—to leading-edge
pediatric cancer research across the nation. Children’s
Hospital Los Angeles is incredibly grateful for PCRF’s
enduring support and partnership in the fight against
childhood cancer.
PCRF’s gift helps fund a brighter future for kids like Kali.

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles recently was
awarded a generous five-year, $1.15 million grant
from the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation
(PCRF) to support and name the Clinical Trials
Program in the Children’s Center for Cancer and
Blood Diseases (CCCBD).
“Cancer is the number one cause of death by
disease in children, teens and young adults in the
United States,” said Stuart E. Siegel, director of
the CCCBD. “The road from initial idea to clinical
application can be a long one for new anti-cancer
agents, particularly for those agents to be used for
pediatric cancers. Knowing that we can rely on the
support of the PCRF to move the results we get at
the lab bench quickly to our patients is essential to
our future success.”
Research breakthroughs in the treatment of childhood cancers during the past 50 years—many pioneered at Children’s Hospital—have helped increase
