LETTER FROM JOHN SEO
If there is one word that I can always use to describe Spaulding
for Children, it’s adaptable. As I am sure you agree, our
economic climate is still a work in progress and at times
hinders the ability for non-profits like Spaulding for Children
to receive the vital funding needed to serve those in our
community. Along with many other organizations, Spaulding
for Children faced challenging times with the close of the
Texas State Legislative session, which resulted in extensive
budget cuts to both our adoption and post adoption programs.
The need to raise private funds is more important than ever as
the income received by government, continues to only cover a
portion of the expenses required to run efficient and effective Foster Care, Adoption,
and Post Adoption programs.

Agency Services
We’ve seen it affect smaller non-profits and other organizations; many of them
having to downsize, cut programs, and some even forced to close their doors. I can
gratefully say that Spaulding for Children hasn’t done any of those. We are still
here, thriving and continuing to provide the same services our families and children
deserve, completely uninterrupted. We’ve even had the opportunity to expand our
Post Adoption services to the Dallas/Fort Worth and East Texas areas, to ensure that
these critical services were maintained in these communities.

Spaulding for Children continues to demonstrate an excellent track record of
delivering high outcomes as evidenced by the 98% of families that have remained
intact through our Post Adoption Program as opposed to the national average of
85%. This is a result of the adaptability, hard work and commitment of the great
team at Spaulding for Children. They are truly committed to our mission – to
provide children in need of a loving home with the joy of having one. These
outcomes are even more impressive when you consider that administration
comprised only 6% of costs. I am proud to be part of an organization that is fiscally
responsible and adaptable to the changing times.
As we look to 2012 and beyond, I am humbled by how much work there is still to
be done. Today, in this great State of ours, there are over 31,000 children in foster
care and over 6,000 children waiting for their forever home! This is truly not
acceptable and we can do better!
As I reflect on the road ahead, I’m always reminded of the fact that we have the most
incredible supporters out there - you. Yes, every single one of you reading this have
in some form or another affected Spaulding for Children in a very positive way, and
we thank you for that. Many of you have supported us at one of our fundraising and
recruiting efforts like the Chevron Houston Marathon and Expo, the Special Opt to
Adopt Corpus Christi Benefit, Texas Hold ‘Em, Run to Adopt 5K in McAllen, and
the Aces for Adoption Tennis Tournament. We look forward to enjoying these
events again this year with your continued support. Thank you.

Foster Care
In 2011, Spaulding for Children provided 21,827 days of care for 119
children in the Greater Houston Area. 23 children were adopted by their foster parents
through Spaulding for Children. Spaulding for Children’s Foster Care program
supports the agency’s mission by providing foster homes for children currently in the
custody of The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (TDFPS) who
have been abused, abandoned, or neglected. The program has two components:
temporary foster care and foster to adopt. Temporary foster care provides homes for
children who are waiting for the outcome of their permanency plan which may include
adoption, return to parents, kinship placement or remaining in state custody. The foster
to adopt component identifies children for whom the permanency plan is adoption and
places them with foster parents who desire to foster them with the end goal of adoption.
100% of foster children stayed with the foster parents until discharged through adoption
or other type of placement initiated and planned TDFPS and Spaulding for Children.
Adoption
Adoption services are provided through the Houston, Corpus Christi, and McAllen
offices which serves 29 counties in Texas. In 2011 Spaulding for Children placed 70
children in permanent families. 71 children officially became part of their “forever
families” in 2011 when their adoptions were finalized. Spaulding for Children
continues to maintain a superior success rate in which 91% of its placements become
finalized adoptions.
Foster Care
The largest placement was 5 children
The oldest child was 16 years old
The Youngest child was 2 days old
Adoption
The largest placement was 5 children
The oldest child was 17 years old
The youngest child was 1 year old
Post Adoption
Post Adoption Services are provided through the Houston, Corpus Christi, McAllen,
Plano, Paris, and Fort Worth offices. In 2011, the Post Adoption program served 1006
children and provided 3,297 case management hours. Spaulding for Children’s Post
Adoption program began in 1990 for the purpose of providing on-going support
services to families who adopted children from the Texas Department of Family and
Protective Services (TDFPS). The program is designed to protect, strengthen and
preserve the new families, as well as help them understand and cope with the existing
bonds the children had in past relationships. Post Adoption services are free of charge
and are offered to all members of the family until the youngest adopted child reaches
eighteen years of age. Spaulding for Children specializes in working with

The Adoption program consists of several components: recruitment, training,
placement, and finalization. Recruitment efforts include staff, community
volunteers and adoptive parents advocating through media, public appearances and
faith-based campaigns. A testament to the quality of services is that the agency’s
greatest recruiters continue to be the adoptive families who return to adopt again, and
refer their family and friends. Adoption is a permanent, lifelong commitment to a child.
The average cost for adoption through Spaulding for Children averages about $10,500
per child versus the national and Texas average of $23,000 per child. Adoption
services through Spaulding for Children are free of charge to families, eliminating
significant financial barriers for prospective adoptive parents.

children defined as special needs by TDFPS. All Post Adoption services are
offered in both English and Spanish. The Post Adoption program provides
case management, respite care, education, support groups, therapeutic
camping, counseling, and treatment services designed to resolve adoption
issues and strengthen family functioning to increase the quality of life for all
family members; thus insuring that the family remains intact. During 2011,
99% of adopted children utilizing Post Adoption services remained with their
adopted families.
The oldest child was 15 years old
Parent Education
Spaulding for Children finalized the Parent Education Program which served
392 parents out of the Corpus Christi office in 2011. This program was
supported by the Prevention and Early Intervention division of TDFPS. The
program uses the Parenting Wisely curriculum to show parents videos of
families interacting and experiencing common family problems. Families
served through this program can be biological parents, adoptive parents,
expectant parents, and relative caregivers. Spaulding for Children partnered
with other social service agencies such as Padre Behavioral Hospital, the
Area Agency on Disability and Aging, and the ACE and 21st Century
Afterschool Programs to provide this program throughout Nueces, Jim Wells,
Kleberg, San Patricio, and Aransas counties. The Parent Education Program
strengthened families throughout the Coastal Bend area by teaching them
effective communication skills. Parents were introduced to more effective
discipline and reward techniques and how to redirect child aggression and
disruptive behaviors. Parents gained a boost of confidence in their parenting
skills in order to make them even more successful parents.

MANAGEMENT & GENERAL The Heart of a Child
This is Katherine Leverenz. She is a typical 8 year old. She loves to play with her
friends and loves her toys. An active student at The Post Oak School, she is anything
but your typical elementary student. A few weeks ago, Katherine and her family
attended a fundraiser for Massey Ranch Elementary – her old elementary school. A
basket full of toys caught her eye at the silent auction and she started to feverishly
bid on it. Katherine won the basket and told her mom immediately after that she
wanted to give the toys to children who needed them more than she did. She decided
to donate her basket to the foster kids at Spaulding for Children.
Katherine’s story reminds us that big hearts come in all ages and sizes. Katherine
was thinking of others before herself and what she could do to help those who are
less fortunate. Our success is possible because of people like Katherine and other
generous donors who help enrich the lives of the children that Spaulding for Children
strives to help.

"Michael"
“Michael”, a 15-year-old boy placed by Spaulding for
Children has received some good news: he was recently
admitted to a competitive audio-visual technology course at
the Miller Technology Center in the Houston area. Since he
loves working with computers, downloading music, playing
video games and working with technology, this is a great
personal and professional opportunity for him in the ever
changing world of technology.
Michael showing off one of his
books.
In the future, he hopes to assist with audio-visual programs at his church as well as other
endeavors pertaining to technology. Once he completes this course, he plans to search for
some related part-time work to prepare him for college – where he plans to concentrate on
arts and technology.
He has other interests, which include animals and playing games with kids in his neighborhood and church youth group. He also enjoys building with Legos, drawing, and reading
science fiction. He is ready to continue his education in college and is excited for all the
courses it offers and the variety of people he will meet.
NEWSLETTER
Michael began playing with audio and video applications at
a very young age. When he was younger, he preferred to stay
inside, which lead him to develop more indoor interests.
Now with his forever family, he has his own laptop and
Xbox that have helped him master these technologies. He
has also taken a Touch Systems course in high school that he
learned so much from and truly loved.

When You Least Expect It
Some may say that it is coincidence or chance. I say it was
fate. It was a normal Saturday morning, which had come all
too soon. I woke with a tired feeling. I decided to get up and
get the day started. As usual, I had a full day planned. I tried
to see what I could eliminate from my schedule. I thought
very hard and almost convincingly eliminated a trip to 300
Bowling Alley. The children who we were sponsoring as part
of our church’s Share-A-Gift program were going to be there
that day. The Share-A-Gift Program is a youth program that
allows them to bring gifts for those who are a part of Spaulding
for Children. This was our second year and we thought it’d
be nice to meet some of the kids that we sponsor. I had an
overwhelming feeling that even though I was super tired, I
needed to go. So I gathered about eight children together and
we all headed to the bowling alley. When we walked in the
foster children had already started bowling their second
game.
Jacquela
The kids that I brought with me were slowly starting to mingle with them. They talked
and it wasn’t long before they were laughing and having fun. There was one little girl
there in particular that I talked to that really caught my attention. She was the girl that
my youngest daughter was sponsoring. When I saw my daughter talking to her, I walked
over and began getting to know her as well. She had such a mild and meek demeanor. I
fell in love right away. After being there for about an hour and a half, I loaded all of the
kids back into my truck and headed home. I listened to the kids as they talked about the
children that they just met. They couldn’t stop talking about the day. I started listening
to my daughters talk about Jacquela - the little girl we both met. I knew in my heart that
I wanted to adopt her but was amazed to hear my own daughters say they wanted her as
a sister as well.
On my way home I called my husband and told him about Jacquela. Later, he admitted
that he knew the first time he heard me talking about her that I truly wanted to pursue
adoption. The following Tuesday my husband had an opportunity to meet her when she
came to the church to prepare to be the spokesperson for the children that we sponsored.
She was planning on coming the following Sunday. After she left, my husband said he also
wanted to adopt her. Sunday, Jacquela arrived at church. She spoke to the congregation
at the end of the service. She did a wonderful job. We then started contacting those in
charge of handling Jacquela’s case at Spaulding for Children. We were blessed to have
Spaulding for Children to help us to make this dream come true. We started the paperwork
in December 2010. Jacquela came to live with us at the end of June. On November 18,
2011, she was officially declared ours according to the courts in the state of Texas. But in
our hearts she was always a part of our family.
Jacquela and her sisters, Dariane and Ashleigh.
Foundation Spotlight: The Rees-Jones Foundation
This year Spaulding for Children faced a new challenge when it accepted the Post Adoption
contracts for Regions 3 and 4 of Texas, encompassing the Dallas/Fort Worth area and the
Northeast Texas region. The acceptance of these regions doubled the area we serve through
our Post Adoption program and increased the demand for financial support in order to better
provide the adoptive families in these communities with the support they need to keep their
families intact.
The Rees-Jones Foundation was one of the first organizations to come to our aid and offer its
support to help sustain these vital services in the community. The Foundation has
continued to be involved in the work that Spaulding for Children is doing in the Dallas/Fort
Worth area and is a prominent leader in the effort to support children in the Texas foster care
system. Founded in 2006 by Jan and Trevor Rees-Jones, The Rees-Jones Foundation is a
private foundation that works with non-profit organizations, primarily in North Texas, to
serve others and improve their quality of life in tangible ways. Of particular interest to the
Foundation is the work of organizations that defend the welfare of children suffering from
abuse or neglect and that encourage the development of healthy families, including adoptive
families such as those served by Spaulding.
The founders of the Rees-Jones Foundation are passionate about their calling to make a
difference for those in need. One can easily see Jan and Trevor’s kind and generous hearts
in the many endeavors they support each year. “One of the blessings we enjoy is the passion
of those who provide the services needed by so many. We marvel at their energy, their
dedication, their creativity and their ability to do so much with whatever resources are
provided. We want to be their partners, we want to share their successes and we want to offer
support when they are stretched. These leaders deserve all the credit, although they probably
would say they do not work for the credit that comes their way. That sincere commitment to
helping others is why it brings us so much joy to be their partners." --Jan and Trevor ReesJones
At Spaulding for Children we are truly grateful for their partnership and support to help
provide children in need of a loving home with the joy of having one. Support from
organizations like The Rees-Jones Foundation allow us to continue building the legacy that
Spaulding for Children is proud to have been a part of since 1977. We appreciate the
willingness of The Rees-Jones Foundation to help sustain the adoptive families that rely on
these vital services each year.
Office Depot commemorated 25 years as a premier
provider of office supplies and services by holding a
ribbon-cutting celebration for the grand re-opening of
one of its newly remodeled stores in Houston.
During the ceremony, the Office Depot Foundation
donated new children’s sackpacks with essential
school supplies and made a charitable contribution of
$200 to Spaulding for Children, as well as to two other children’s charities in the Houston area.
The sackpack donations are part of the Office Depot Foundation’s award-winning National
Backpack Program, through which it donates new sackpacks to deserving children across the
United States and beyond. Since the program began in 2001, Office Depot has given away more
than 2.5 million backpacks and sackpacks to help children succeed in school. We extend a huge
thank you to Office Depot for their generous contribution.
