Letter from the President and Executive Director
2008 has been a productive and exciting year for New Yorkers For Children, and has brought with it both growth and change
for our organization.
Commissioner
Nicholas Scoppetta,
President
Susan L. Magazine,
Executive Director
In June of this year, New Yorkers For Children (NYFC) issued
our first Request For Proposals to non-profit agencies
supporting youth in foster care. NYFC was able to allocate
more than $800,000 to support 13 new programs that will
impact increasing numbers of young people in foster care,
preparing them to become successful, self-sufficient adults.
As the non-profit partner to the Administration for Children’s
Services, NYFC continues to support the important work of
Children’s Services. For the 2008 grant year, NYFC is providing
over $950,000 in funding for Children’s Services’ programs for
older youth in care.
In addition to these new programs, NYFC continues to fund
our signature initiatives, including the Back-to-School Package
and Guardian Scholars programs. For the 2007-2008 school
year, NYFC provided Back-to-School Packages of essential
supplies including laptops, book bags, bed linens and more to
nearly 400 college-enrolled young people in foster care.
Our Guardian Scholars continue to flourish academically, and
we are delighted to welcome Hunter College freshman
Will Bitter and John Jay College freshman Al Edmond to the
program this year.
NYFC is able to provide programs and supportive services to
young people in foster care because of the generosity of our
supporters. At our Ninth Annual Fall Gala on September 16th,
nearly 700 guests filled the room at Cipriani 42 to show their
support for NYFC and the evening’s honoree – Kevin Liles,
Executive Vice President of Warner Music Group. Thanks to the
dedication and support of our Co-Chairs Oscar de la Renta,
Nancy and Andrew Jarecki, Dayssi and Paul Kanavos, Ashley
and Jeff McDermott, and Caryn and Jeff Zucker, along with
lead sponsor Nordstrom, the evening was one of our most
successful to date, raising nearly $1.9 million to support
programs for young people in foster care throughout the city.
At our Fifth Annual Spring Dinner Dance – New Year’s in April:
A Fool’s Fête, guests raised more than $515,000 for our
educational programs. We are especially grateful to our
presenting sponsor Missoni, as well as to lead sponsor
Swarovski for their generous support!
Now in our new Seventh Avenue offices, NYFC is looking
forward to continued programmatic expansion and fundraising
success in 2008. We are so grateful for the dedication of
our Board of Directors, Friends Committee, and generous
supporters, and now more than ever, we hope we can count
on your continued commitment to NYFC and youth in foster
care in New York City.

2008 Fall Gala Celebrates
Accomplishments
On Tuesday, September 16th, nearly 700 supporters
celebrated the Ninth Annual New Yorkers For Children Fall Gala
at Cipriani 42. Co-chairs Oscar de la Renta, Nancy and Andrew
Jarecki, Dayssi and Paul Kanavos, Ashley and Jeff McDermott
and Caryn and Jeff Zucker were joined by special guest
Mariska Hargitay for the evening, which raised nearly $1.9
million to support programs for young people in foster care.
Dayssi Olarte de Kanavos
and Spirit Award Winner
Kevin DiBenedetto.
Upon entering Cipriani, guests were greeted by an oversized
composition notebook, designed by David Stark, which
featured quotes from young people in foster care about the
importance of New Yorkers For Children (NYFC). Those
messages were echoed throughout the room, with additional
quotes projected on the walls and marble composition
notebook vases holding lush red flowers on each table. The
décor set the tone for the evening, and was a constant
reminder to the guests of how important their support is for
young people in foster care throughout New York City.
Jimmy Fallon opened the evening with a special comedic
performance to welcome guests. Lyor Cohen, Chairman and
Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta, Patti LaBelle, and Kevin Liles
CEO of Warner Music Group, presented honoree Kevin Liles,
Executive Vice President of Warner Music Group, with the
Nicholas Scoppetta Child Welfare Award for his tireless efforts
to promote education and provide inspiration to young
people. In his acceptance speech, Mr. Liles reminded the
young people in attendance that despite adversities they may
have faced, they are all superstars. He then welcomed surprise
guest Lupe Fiasco, who performed his hit single, “Superstar.”

On April 16, 2008, the Friends of New Yorkers For Children
hosted their Fifth Annual Spring Dinner Dance—New Year’s in
April: A Fool’s Fête, presented by Missoni. More than 450
guests attended an evening of dinner and dancing at The
Mandarin Oriental, which sold out before invitations were
mailed for the second consecutive year. The evening raised
more than $515,000 to support New Yorkers For Children’s
educational programs. Guardian Scholars Sha’Rhone Frost and
Jessica Maxwell were among the young people in foster care
in attendance who spoke to guests about the impact of NYFC’s
support on their academic success.
Another of the evening’s
highlights included a recordbreaking silent auction,
complete with custom
couture gowns, relaxing spa
treatments, vacation getaways, and delicious restaurant packages. Bidding continued well into the night,
and the auction grossed
more than $50,000.
Event Chairs Marisa Brown, Martin Gibson Dessoffy, Lydia
Fenet, Margherita Maccappani Missoni, Coralie Charriol Paul,
Renee Rockefeller, Susan Shin, Vanessa Weiner von Bismarck,
and Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, along with Junior Chairs
Fabiola Beracasa, Zani Gugelmann, Oliver Hammond, Tinsley

success. Honorary Chair and founding member of the Friends
Committee, Dayssi Olarte de Kanavos, was surprised during
the evening’s program when she was presented with an award
in appreciation of her dedication to the Friends Committee. We
are so grateful for Dayssi’s support in helping to make A Fool’s
Fête the amazing success it has become.
Generous supporters and corporate sponsors included our Lead
Sponsor, Swarovski, as well as Ram and Preethi Sundaram, Hugo
Boss, Roger Vivier, Christine and Stephen Schwarzman, Bally,
Burberry, Calvin Klein, Jay Ahr, Missoni Profumi, Reservoir
Capital, Bluemercury Apothecary, Tibi, and Vogue. In addition to
their table purchases, Frederic Fekkai and Dior Beauty provided
hair and makeup consultations for the 10 young people in foster
care who joined us for the evening. Friends Committee member
B Michael once again lent his support by dressing and styling the
youth in Missoni, Tibi, Tracy Reese, and Hart Schaffner Marx.
Thank you to all of our generous contributors. We look forward to
seeing you on April 15th at the 2009 A Fool’s Fête!

Mariska Hargitay introduced this year’s moving film, featuring six
young people, who spoke about the need for support in their
quest to achieve their dreams. The film, which can be viewed at
www.newyorkersforchildren.org, set the tone for the hugely
successful live auction of Guardian Scholarships, Back-to-School
Packages, and other resources for students, presented by
Sotheby’s Jamie Niven. Generous supporters certainly took
the Gala’s message, “You can do it!” to heart; in less than ten
minutes, guests raised their hands to be champions for NYFC
educational programs, raising nearly $350,000.

New Yorkers For Children
Funds Thirteen New Programs
In June 2008, New Yorkers For Children issued our first Request For
Proposals (RFP) to foster care and preventive service agencies, supportive programs, and community based organizations that serve youth in
foster care in New York City. NYFC was thrilled to receive 47 proposals in
response to our RFP.
After a thorough review of the organizations and proposals by the Board
of Directors’ Program Committee, NYFC funded the following 13 new
programs in this grant year for a total of $816,101:
Children’s Aid Society’s Next Generation Center (NGC): NYFC’s support
will provide the resources to hire an Education Coordinator and a Youth
Development Services Coordinator who will address the specialized
needs of disconnected youth, with a focus on young adults who have
been involved with the child welfare system.
Coalition For Hispanic Families: Funding will enhance the agency’s
current Preparing Youth for Adulthood (PYA) program with a social skills
development program that will provide training for 50 youth in care.
Fund For Social Change: NYFC will join a funding collaborative to promote
the hiring of Parent Advocates by foster care agencies. These advocates are
parents whose children have been placed in care, and have changed their
lives for the better, received extensive training, and have been reunited with
their children. The collaborative will support a competitive process for foster
care agencies to apply for funds to hire, train, support, and evaluate the
Parent Advocate Initiative by the University of Chicago at Chapin Hall.
Good Shepherd: NYFC’s financial support will allow for the expansion and
enhancement of the family engagement efforts of the Permanency Unit.
Good Shepherd will hire a Parent Advocate to engage selected families in
a residential facility with an ongoing program of workshops, activities and
retreats to strengthen family bonds and parenting skills.
Graham Windham: As a result of NYFC funding, Graham Windham will
engage in recruitment of new foster homes targeted for teenagers in their
community of origin, focusing on Highbridge in the Bronx and East
Harlem in Manhattan.
Jewish Child Care Association (JCCA): This grant will support the design
of a replicable model for family foster care that incorporates the principles
and techniques of the Sanctuary Model, a trauma informed treatment
model that JCCA introduced in their Westchester Campus. The Sanctuary
Model provides both a philosophy and specific tools that will allow JCCA
to better prepare youth for adulthood, improve family interactions among
youth, their families and foster families and ensure permanency for
children in care.
New Alternatives For Children (NAC): NAC’s mission is to provide innovative, high quality services to families who are caring for children with
special medical needs at home. With funding from NYFC, the One Step
Forward program will encompass an array of youth development activities
that meet the special needs of medically fragile teens and young adults
and their siblings who are at present or have been in foster care.
New York Center For Children: The new Group Therapy program for youth
in foster care, which will receive financial support from NYFC, aims to
facilitate healthy transitions to successful adulthood. The program will
focus on psychological issues as well as provide support and resources to
help empower the teens.
New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC):
Through the support of NYFC, NYSPCC will hire a full-time specially
trained clinician to provide support to teens, helping them process
traumatic experiences and learn skills to manage stress, anxiety and
depression to prepare them to become independent adults.
Osborne Association: NYFC’s grant will enhance the New York Initiative
for Children of Incarcerated Parents by improving the well-being of older
youth in foster care whose parents are in prison through data collection,
clinical consultation, permanency planning, training, and policy and
practice recommendation.
Safe Space: Funding will provide outreach, case management, education,
employment training, independent life skills, support services and arts
programming to youth in foster care at a new drop-in center in Far
Rockaway, Queens.
The Door: The Door will add a Foster Care Services Coordinator to support
their extensive programming for youth in foster care. The new Coordinator
will provide young people with the intensive case management and
counseling support they need during their transition to independence.
Youth Communications: With Children’s Services’ Office of Advocacy and
Office of Youth Development, Youth Communications will use funding to
develop a booklet of personal stories on building connections between
birth parents and foster parents, written by the parents themselves. The
booklet will focus on issues facing parent partners of pre-teens and teens,
in particular, in order to support permanency for older youth.
Youth in Foster Care Give Back
New Yorkers For Children has recently launched a Youth Advisory Board in
order to empower young people in foster care to take an active role in
guiding the development of NYFC programs. Members of the Board are
students in high school and college throughout New York City who use
their experiences in foster care to help shape the programs available to
them, as well as to increase awareness of resources for youth in care.
During the spring of 2008, the NYFC Youth Advisory Board planned and led
a college trip for high school students in foster care, providing thirty young
people with access to the campuses of local colleges and information
about each institution’s academic programs. Students visited Fordham
University, John Jay College, and Purchase College. In addition, high school
students who participated had the opportunity to meet with the Youth
Advisory Board leadership, youth in care who had attended college themselves. We look forward to planning a similar trip next year.
Back-to-School Packages:
Tools for Success
The Back-to-School Package program was launched in 1999 as a Board
Initiative and has grown into one of NYFC’s signature programs, providing
college students in foster care with the equipment and supplies
necessary to achieve academic success. Each package contains a laptop,
printer, back pack, bed linens, toiletries, school supplies, and more. During
the 2007-2008 school year, NYFC sent Back-to-School Packages to
hundreds of college students in foster care in New York City.
This year, NYFC aims to provide every college-enrolled young person in
foster care with a Back-to-School Package. This essential program helps
to ensure that students in foster care who are enrolled in college have the
tools and the incentive they need to continue to excel.

New Yorkers For Children hosted our Tenth Network to
Success, focused on the music, film, and television industries
on Wednesday, May 7th at the NYU Kimmel Center. The
Friends and Board Members of NYFC were instrumental
in securing some of the most successful and prominent
professionals in the entertainment industry, including actress
Joy Bryant, music video director Hype Williams, screenwriter
of Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull David Koepp, Executive
Vice President of Warner Music Group Kevin Liles, FOX
morning show host Mike Jerrick, and Oscar-winning screenwriter Bill Goldman. More than 150 young people in foster care
were inspired by the panelists, who stressed the importance
of education as a safety net when pursuing your dreams.
Among the NYFC supporters in attendance to celebrate the
Tenth Network to Success were Dayssi Olarte de Kanavos,
David Koepp, Joe Hall, Mike Jerrick and Tim Kash
were among the Entertainment panelists
Donya Archer Bommer, Susan Burden, Norma Becker, and
Howard Kuo and Rory Hermelee, whose dedication to the
planning of this event helped to make it our most
successful to date.
In addition to enjoying the panel presentation and round table
discussions with the panelists, the youth in attendance
participated in a job readiness workshop presented by the
Federation Employment and Guidance Service (FEGS).
The young people learned about networking and professional
etiquette and were able to put their newly acquired skills to use.
Thank you to FEGS for their support of this important event.
Foster Care Alumni Lead the Way
Reverend Alfonso Wyatt
moderated the panel
On Wednesday, December 5, 2007, more than 100 young
people in foster care filled the auditorium at the New School for
a Network to Success event featuring a panel of foster care
alumni. Reverend Alfonso Wyatt, the 2006 recipient of the
NYFC Nicholas Scoppetta Child Welfare Award, served as the
moderator for the evening, and was joined by successful
panelists from all walks of life. 2005 NYFC Spirit Award winner
Glenn Coleman, who received his degree from Howard
University, spoke about the challenges he faced on his path to
success and how he was able to overcome them. Glenn now
works in technology sales in New York. Giselle John, Executive
Director of Voices of Youth, spoke about how growing up in
foster care motivated her to give back to her community.
Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta, having spent several years
of his childhood in foster care, urged young people to
persevere in the face of adversity. We are so grateful to all of
our panelists, whose experiences inspired the next generation
of New York City’s youth in foster care.
NYFC Partners with Children’s Services
Commissioner of
Children’s Services, John
B. Mattingly
New Yorkers For Children is thrilled to support the important
work of New York City’s Administration for Children’s Services
(ACS) with over $950,000 in grant funding for the 2008 grant
year. NYFC is supporting a variety of meaningful programs to
help older youth in foster care in New York City including those
focused on mentoring, college preparation, mental health,
financial management, employment guidance, and self
advocacy training. Highlighted programs include the Youth
Financial Empowerment Initiative, the PSAT and SAT
Preparation program, and the Child Trauma Institute.
NYFC continues to partner with Children’s Services, Citibank,
the Center for Economic Empowerment, United Way of New
York City and the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services to support the Youth Financial Empowerment
Initiative (YFE). YFE is a comprehensive strategy to provide
youth in foster care with essential financial literacy skills and
resources to support asset attainment to help the youth
successfully age out of care. This unique financial savings
program will enable youth in foster care, ages 16-21, to save
for specific asset purchases, including education and
homeownership, which will support their future economic
independence. Youth who participate contribute to these
accounts with earned income, which is matched with a mix of
government and private funds to enable the purchase of their
approved asset goal. In the current economic climate, this
Initiative is more important than ever for preparing these young
people for financial independence.
Many youth in foster care struggle to overcome personal
barriers to achieve access to a college education. The Test
Preparation Education Initiative provides community-based
PSAT and SAT preparation courses to young people in foster
care. The goal of this program is to help raise the participants’
test scores and increase their chances of attending a two or
four year college.
The Child Trauma Institute is a Resiliency Program at Mount
Sinai Hospital that provides clinical intervention for adolescents
in foster care between the ages of 18-20 who have a history of
trauma, abuse, and neglect. The goal of this program is to help
young people overcome the barriers of trauma in order to make
a successful transition to adulthood.
NYFC is grateful for our partnership with Children’s Services,
which gives us unique and unprecedented access to youth in
foster care, allowing us to better address their specific needs.
