The situation is critical. Years of poor rainfall have left entire regions of Africa on the
brink of a drought-induced catastrophe. Hunger is widespread, and millions of people need
emergency food.
Combined with the threat of HIV and AIDS, extreme poverty, and political struggle, the
added food shortage only compounds the crisis for children and families in many countries.
The Executive Director of the World Food Programme, James Morris, has described this as

“I spend the whole day feeling hungry,” Muuki says.
At school, she does her best to keep her mind on her studies, but the constant ache in her
stomach makes that almost impossible.
Her mother spends long days in the hot sun, trying to coax a few peas or other vegetables
out of the parched, dry soil. But rains have been almost nonexistent.
Muuki is hopeful that if she does well in school, she’ll be able to find a way to lift her
family out of hunger. “I feel I can only make this family change if I read with a lot of zeal–and
then I pass the exams,” she says.
The sad truth is that if her family’s situation doesn’t improve, there will be no money for
school, and Muuki will have to drop out. For desperately hungry families like this one–there is
little hope outside of help from caring people like you.
