How ’bout this handy work?
Katt Daddy, one of state’s top noodlers, coming to Durant
By Scott Corbin
KLBC 106.3 FM News Director
R
eality television has always been
part of the broadcast schedule,
although the path from “Candid
Camera” to “Here Comes
Honey Boo Boo” isn’t exactly a positive
progression. But
from multiple
variations of the
first reality show
in 1948 to the
apparently hottest
and voyeuristic
version of the latter,
there’s still some
good, clean fun to
be had.
Scott
One hitherto
little-recognized
Corbin
sport has become a bucket-list addition
for millions because of a few popular
programs in the genre. And the state of
Oklahoma is the epicenter of the new
craze. Noodling, or hand-fishing, might
have been the first way a man ever
actually caught a fish for his family. Yes,
technology has put man in position to
catch hundreds of scaly denizens of the
deep by net, or to get enough thrill for
most of us tossing an imitation of a food
source out on the end of a plastic string
with rod and reel. But casting and
reeling isn’t thrill enough for the stars
of cable program “Mudcats.”
The show, which might be changing
locations on your dial this season,
features six teams of two fishermen
each who compete throughout several
weeks to find Oklahoma’s largest
flathead catfish. In front of television
Witch way to
fast cash?
cameras, they sink down into Old
Whiskers’ lair and pull him out with
their bare hands. One of the big
contenders for Oklahoma’s top noodler
is Don Brewer, better known to his
legions of fans as Katt Daddy.
Brewer is a plumber by trade. He
operates a successful business from
his home in Canadian, Okla., at the
northern edge of Pittsburg County, right
in the midst of prime flathead country
at Lake Eufala. He said being part of
the program and the sport are naturals
for him. He loves to be in the water and
he loves to win. But he had a different
motive in mind when he started.
“We were doing a lot of it to feed
our families and everything. I can
catch more fish with my bare hands
than anybody ever thought about
catching with a rod and reel. I can fill
a freezer up right quick, if that’s what
needs to be.” But the thrill has become bigger than
the need to fill empty bellies.
“I do it more now for showin’ off. The
bigger they are, the more it hurts, the
better I like it.”
Yet raw fun isn’t all that motivates
Katt Daddy. There’s a lot of tradition in
Pittsburg County’s noodling plumber.
“I didn’t plan on becoming a
plumber when I got out of high
school. I had other things going on.
But my dad was a plumber, and he’s
the one who put me in this business.
And it’s about the same thing with
the noodling. I learned from him and
just took that legacy. It’s a tradition.
With a lot of Okies, it’s a tradition of
noodling. It’s a heritage.” That’s a common thread with
Brewer’s No. 1 rival, Scooter Bivins of
Temple, Okla. Bivins and his brother,
Skipper, learned from their father
— a man Skipper once said on his own
show, “Hillbilly Handfishin’,” had
learned it from his grandfather. The
Brewer clan has a similar tradition.
Brewer told me, “It’s just been handed
down from my grandpa to my dad,
from my dad to me, and that’s just how
it’s worked. We spend a lot of good
times together. We don’t catch fish
every time we go out. That’s why they
call it fishin’ and not catchin’.”
Brewer also said, to be a good
noodler, you have to have a good
fishing partner. Handfishing for giant
catfish is not a solitary pastime, not
if you hope to live to a ripe old age.
Partner Dennis “Copperhead” Williams
gave Brewer his nickname. Katt Daddy
said having a solid partner gives him
the confidence to go after the big fish,
even if they are a bit deep or under an
unstable slab of concrete at the bottom
of Lake Eufala.
“A bunch of ‘em, they get skeered
(scared). But me and my partner,
Dennis, when I say, ‘Sic ‘em,’ he’s on
‘em. That’s just how it works.”
And they just get along.
“I think that’s why we fish together,
‘cause ain’t no one can stand him and
ain’t no one who can stand me.” Brewer doesn’t admit to being skeered
but will confess to an occasional round
of nervousness.
“I’ve been hung up a few times. I tell
you, if you ever get down there and
you panic, you’re done. You’re in Davy
Jones Locker, right there. I’ve been
hung up down there a few times and
I’ve had to calm myself down. You’ve
got to [free yourself] pretty fast, because
you’ve only got so much air.” A competitive nature and a healthy
dose of confidence are both in
abundance with Katt Daddy Brewer.
When I called Bivins “The Catfish
Whisperer,” Brewer seemed to get his
back up a little.
“I guess all them old boys, some of
them think they’re the best of the best,
you know. My deal is, I’m a little selfconceited at times. [Of] course, if you
know you’re good, I don’t know that
it’s self-conceited. I know I’m good.”
Those who watched the show this
past season know Katt Daddy doesn’t
take well to coming in third place.
Scooter won the tournament, with the
easy-going Marion Kincaide taking
the silver.
The fishing is done this year, but don’t
expect Katt Daddy to spill the beans
on the outcome before the next season
fires up, although everybody present
at the weigh-ins knows. He might not
even tell you where to watch the show
this upcoming season, but we are pretty
sure it’ll find a home somewhere on
your television.
In the meantime, Brewer and his
fellows can be met around the country
at various events, such as the Wild Hog
Festival at the Choctaw Event Center,
Oct. 12-13. Meet Katt Daddy there 1-5
p.m. that Saturday.

Pistol Annies
Sassy girl trio pulls trigger
where others might not dare
By Regina Phillips
The KLBC Buzz Editor
I
was watching in April 2011 when
the Pistol Annies made their debut
performance during the Academy
of Country Music’s “Girls Night
Out: Superstar Women of Country”
special. I tuned in mostly for The
Judds, but these three chicks caught
my ears. “Hell on Heels.” It was catchy,
musically and vocally, and it made me
laugh. Good stuff.
Turns out there’s more from where
that came — a 10-track album of the
same name. Plus, Miranda Lambert,
Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley
have said they have more material to
share, depending on public response
to their saucy debut. Looks like plenty
of people have a taste for their style.
Miranda began bringing them out
for short sets on her own tours, and
audiences started getting excited for the
trio. Now, the Pistol Annies are selling
out headlining shows, such as the Sept.
27 concert at Choctaw Event Center and
Sept. 29 stop at Billy Bob’s Texas.
Ever think you get your best ideas
when most folks are asleep? The whim
that became the Pistol Annies began
with a midnight phone call.
Miranda’s “Revolution” album
hit stores in late September 2009. In
November, she was at her Oklahoma
cabin with Ashley, who co-wrote “Heart
Like Mine” and another song on the
album. They were writing more songs.
“They really weren’t right for me or
her individually,” Miranda said, “but
they sounded so cool, we were like,
‘What can we do with these songs?’”
Ashley said they didn’t want to give
them to anybody else either. Ashley
asked Miranda if she’d heard her friend
Angaleena’s songs. That led Ashley to
pick up the phone and tell Angaleena
to e-mail all her songs, because she and
Miranda wanted her to form a band
with them.
“I thought they were in slumberparty mode,” Angaleena said. “I was
like, ‘Girls, you’re going to wake up
tomorrow and realize you’re stupid.”
After Ang figured out Ashley was
referring to Miranda Lambert, she
realized she best get out of bed and
satisfy the request.
A lot of phone calls and secretive
meetings followed. The sassy threesome
first was called the Calamity Janes, but
that moniker already was owned by
a stripper. No biggie. (Anybody else
recollect George Jones singing “She
was hotter than a $2 pistol; she was the
fastest thing around” when hearing the
trio’s name?)
Each has adopted a nickname within
the Pistol Annies branding: Lone Star
Annie is Miranda (raised in Lindale,
Texas), Hippie Annie is Ashley (a
Tennessee native) and Holler Annie
is Angaleena (daughter of a thirdgeneration coal miner in Kentucky).
So these Southern women carry the
musical influences of their home states.
I appreciate that bluegrass infusion that
reminds me of festivals I attended as
a kid with my papaw and his momma
(my great-granny). Yes, more cowbell
is great, but ya’ can’t beat the big bass.
Slide guitar is nice too.
The Pistol Annies’ second single is
“Takin’ Pills,” which also has a video
and was dubbed autobiographical.
Another fun one, as is “Bad Example.”
Most are blunt, clever and comical,
namely “The Hunter’s Wife,” “Trailer
for Rent” and “Lemon Drop.” Every
song was written by one or more of
the Annies. Lambert’s husband, Blake
Shelton, even has a co-writing credit
on “Family Feud” for his “awesome
melody” contribution.
Miranda said, “We call him Pistol
Andy — and he knows he’s lucky.”
Angaleena said, “The music just
came so easily, it’s like we didn’t even
have to try. It kind of just spilled out
of us. I think we were writing a song
within 30 minutes of getting together
for the first time.”
“Sometimes when you write with
people, you don’t have chemistry
at all,” Miranda said. “But we have
chemistry as friends, we have chemistry
onstage, and we have chemistry in our
writing. We’re three singer/songwriters
who come from different places, but
we’re girls with all the same issues, just
saying what every woman in America
wants to say or wants to hear. In our
songs, we say some things that people
aren’t usually allowed to talk about —
or things that people talk about in their
homes, but they don’t usually say on
record. That’s actually kind of been my
thing the whole time, and Ashley and
Ang’s too, but just not as many people
have had a chance to hear it.”
Miranda said she’s usually burnt out
for a few months after completing an
album, but the Pistol Annies has been
invigorating and inspiring. (By the
way, Miranda and Angaleena teamed
to co-write Miranda’s current single,
“Fastest Girl in Town,” from “Four the
Record.”) And be warned that Miranda
doesn’t take too kindly to people
minimizing the work she’s doing with
Ashley and Angaleena.
“This is the farthest thing from
a side project that I could do,” she
said. “Somebody asked me that in
an interview, and it made me mad. I
think they did that on purpose. I don’t
do side projects. I do projects that are
100 percent or I don’t do them. And
these girls have plenty to say too. I
really want people to know that when
they come to see a Pistol Annies show,
they’re not going to see anything about
Miranda Lambert. It’s all about the
Pistol Annies.
“I don’t think it was my manager’s
favorite thing that I’ve ever said: ‘I’ve
started a band and you have to deal
with it!’ But it’s worked out great.
When she realized that it was serious,
she was like, ‘Let’s go full on.’”
Angaleena said, “Our motto is, ‘We
ask for forgiveness, not permission.’”
“She really believes in us, and we are
a group, but we’ve learned so much
just being on the road with her,” said
Ashley, who’s worked on projects with
indie-rocker/producer Jack White and
released a major-label debut. “I mean,
there is nothing fake about her. She
says, ‘I’m just one of y’all,’ and she
means it. But she also says, ‘I can’t wait
for y’all to get famous so you can’t go
into Wal-Mart anymore either without
getting recognized.’”

LeAnn Rimes’ peace plan backfired
Tim McGraw helps military family get a home • Eric Church video has Durant tie
By Bob McKinzie
KLBC 106.3 FM Program Director
LeAnn Rimes probably should stop
reading things about herself online. She
didn’t like some comments she was
seeing from a woman named Kimberly
Smiley and her daughter, Lexi. So she
called them to
try to get them to
stop their negative

seemed shocked
that the Smileys
not only recorded
the conversation
but posted snippets
online. LeAnn filed
a $25,000 lawsuit
Bob

McKinzie
stating she didn’t

Husband and wife Garth Brooks and
Trisha Yearwood were named the
most powerful celebrity couple in
music. They were christened as such
by Billboard, beating out hip-hop/R&B
royalty Jay-Z and Beyoncé.
The Canadian Country Music
Association is trotting out its inaugural
Generation Award, and the first winner
is not Canadian. Taylor Swift gets the
trophy for her career achievements. She
is the biggest-selling artist in Canada,
so the award is not really a surprise.
Toby Keith will release a new album,
“Hope on the Rocks,” Nov. 13. The
project’s first single, “I Like Girls That
Drink Beer,” climbed up Billboard’s
country songs chart quickly. Toby
served as producer and principle
songwriter on the album that will
include 10 tracks in the standard release
and four additional songs in a deluxe
edition. He’s been out on his Live in
Overdrive tour.
Jake Owen has helped a fan in a
most amazing way. Nick Marlowe is
a grieving husband from Lead Hill,
Ark. Nick recently lost his 20-year-old
wife when she had a stroke during
childbirth. Nick and Kristin were big
Jake Owen fans. But Nick heard Owen’s
“Anything For You” for the first time
shortly after her death. Marlowe was
so moved that he wrote to Owen on
Facebook: “Thank you for your music
that kept my chin up, and for the
music
laughs and smiles your music gave my
beautiful wife.” Jake was so saddened
by Marlowe’s message that he shared
Marlowe’s letter on Twitter and told
fans to say a prayer for Marlowe in a
video chat.
Luke Bryan loved the “easy A” classes
in high school. His senior year class
schedule included physical education,
weight training, shop, keyboarding,
drama and English. Well, maybe they
weren’t all easy. But Luke said he was a
smart kid — so smart that he had all the
heavy stuff done by his senior year. He
was also the youngest kid in his class.
Tim McGraw is one of the few country
stars who has chosen not to spend
a whole lot of time on Twitter and
Facebook, logging personal intricacies
of life. He said, “Part of me is like, ‘Who
cares? Who cares if I’m going to the
grocery store?’” Every once in a while,
he will post about something significant
going on, and he’s trying to get better
at it and do a little more. But it’s not
likely we’ll ever get constant updates
about what’s going on in his everyday
life. He said, “I just can’t get into the
mundane.”
Tim McGraw surprised a military
family in Rhode Island with a brand
new house. Shaun, Allyse and Molly
Connor were thrilled with their new
mortgage-free home, courtesy of Tim
and Operation Homefront. Daughter
Molly had one more surprise waiting
for her. Tim took her into the backyard
of the new house, where a brand new
puppy was waiting for her.
Blake Shelton is pretty fed up with the
way Simon Cowell has been criticizing
“The Voice.” Blake said he wished he
had the kind of time Simon has to trash
other shows. Blake had some advice
for “The X Factor” judge: “Just do your
own show.”
Eric Church leads the list of nominees
for this year’s Country Music
Association Awards. He grabbed five,
including male vocalist and album of
the year. But Eric has a habit of losing
phones. About seven so far. That was
enough to get him dropped by the
insurance company that insures phones.
This last time, he dove into the Gulf
of Mexico. He said he had the phone
when he went in, but not when he came
back up. Because of this, he missed the
CMA Awards announcements. He had
no idea he’d gotten any nominations,
let alone five. He knew something was

up at the airport started driving toward
Nashville and away from his house. His
first thought was, “What kind of trouble
am I in now?” He soon found out the
situation and promised to take better
care of the phone he has now. Blake
Shelton and Miranda Lambert scored
four nominations each. Jason Aldean,
Dierks Bentley, Kenny Chesney,
Taylor Swift and Little Big Town
pulled in three.
Vince Gill recently got a star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame. His wife,
Amy Grant, and Reba McEntire were
on hand for the ceremony.
Kenny Rogers has a memoir coming
out. Look for “Luck or Something Like
It” at your favorite store. If you’d like
to get a free sample, just “like” Kenny’s

Hunter Hayes’ tour bus has a rather
unique feature. The “Wanted” singer
had the bus gutted, and now the back
end of it is a recording studio, so he can
work on songs while on the road.
When Big & Rich wanted to call their
latest album “Redneck Jedi,” the label
said there could be a legal issue with
“Star Wars” creator George Lucas. Jon
Bon Jovi, who worked with the guys on
the record, had liked the idea, so they
called him to give him the bad news.
Jon said, “I’ll call him.” He dialed up
George, and it turned out that Lucas is a
fan. No problem. They got to use it.
Lady Antebellum is set to release a
Christmas album Oct. 22. “On This
Winter’s Night” must have been really
hard to sing in Nashville through this
summer of record heat. However, they
decorated the studio with trees and
lights to try to get in the spirit.
Legendary songwriter Joe South died
in September at his Atlanta home due
to heart failure. He was 72. If you don’t
know the name, you’ll know the songs.
Joe penned hits such as “Rose Garden,”
“Games People Play,” “Down in the
Boondocks” and “Don’t It Make You
Want to Go Home.” Joe went into semiretirement in 1976. He had a bout with
depression after his brother committed
suicide around 1971.
Trisha Yearwood will return for another
season of “Trisha’s Southern Kitchen”
on Food Network Oct. 20.

Led Zeppelin movie and Rod Stewart Christmas coming soon
By Regina Phillips
The KLBC Buzz Editor
Led Zeppelin is coming to the big
screen Oct. 13. However, only 1,500 of
them throughout the world will show
the concert film created from the British
band’s 2007 “Celebration Day” reunion.
Other fans still will get the opportunity to
see it when it’s released on multiple video
and audio formats Nov. 19. Original
members Robert Plant, John Paul Jones
and Jimmy Page were joined onstage
by Jason Bonham — the late drummer
John Bonham’s son. The two-hour
show was the band’s first as headliner
in 27 years and included “Stairway to
Heaven,” ‘’Kashmir” and “Dazed and
Confused” in the 19-song set. Already
in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Led
Zeppelin has been named one recipient
of the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors, the
nation’s highest honor for those who’ve
influenced American culture through the
arts. That will happen in December.
Rod Stewart will return to Home
Shopping Network with a live
performance Oct. 26. He will showcase
his first holiday album, “Merry
Christmas, Baby,” to be available
officially Oct. 30. He did the same thing
with “Fly Me to the Moon ... The Great
American Songbook: Volume V” in
October 2010 and became HSN’s top
music seller.
Gwen Stefani celebrated her 10th
anniversary Sept. 14. The No Doubt
singer told Marie Claire her marriage
to Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale
is “a miracle” and her biggest
accomplishment so far. Stefani, who
turns 43 Oct. 3, said she and Rossdale,
who’ll be 47 on Halloween eve, learn
about each other all the time. “He
balances me out. And he never stops
liking me, which is awesome. It makes
me feel happy that someone likes me
as much as he does.” They have two
sons — Kingston, 6, and Zuma, 4. And
mom has learned to delegate duties
involving her clothing lines, even
skipping fashion weeks the past two
years because they conflicted with
school starting.
Rihanna sought to honor
grandmother Clara Braithwaite, aka
Gran Gran Dolly, a few months after
her death with a big tattoo. The 24year-old Barbadian singer chose a
winged Isis, a goddess worshipped in
Ancient Egypt as the ideal mother and
wife. The artwork basically outlines
the front of her ribcage, the wings
outstretched beneath her breasts. She
shared a photo of it online, identifying
the figure as a “complete woman,”
“model for future generations.”
Chris Brown got some new neck ink.
Media outlets were speculating it
represented a battered woman, like the
photos of Rihanna after he beat her
up prior to the 2009 Grammy Awards.
Sources close to his people said it was
a “random” woman and any similarity
was “coincidental.” His rep claims
it’s a “sugar skull,” associated with
Mexico’s Day of the Dead, and a MAC
cosmetics design Brown saw. I don’t
know about the symbolism, but the ink
looks like ornamental designs on one
side of the female’s face rather than
bruises and such.
“Angry Birds” just kinda got punked.
All three members of Green Day were
re-imaged as those little green pigs
for the game. And fans who get that
version will be able to unlock a new
Green Day song, “Troublemaker.” Look
for it “later this fall.” But be aware that
frontman Billy Joe Armstrong said it’s
an addictive game.
Green Day also announced a North
American tour but not one of almost
two dozen arena concerts are scheduled
near Texoma. Still, fans of the California
threesome will have plenty of new
music to listen to with the trio of
albums — “¡Uno!” (Sept. 25), “¡Dos!”
(Nov. 13) and “¡Tre!” (Jan. 15).
Eddie Van Halen’s health made
headlines as it halted the band’s
international tour. That’s unfortunate
enough without having to confirm to the
world the 57-year-old rocker had to have
emergency surgery for an infected colon.
Japan concert dates were rescheduled
for 2013. Van Halen had canceled quite
a few U.S. concerts this year, including
the Sept. 15 show at Oklahoma City’s
Chesapeake Energy Arena.
Lady Gaga also announced her next
album, “ARTPOP,” will be available as
an app. The “completely interactive”
content will include chats, films for
every song, extra music, games, fashion
updates and more. She’ll be able to add
new things all the time. It’s planned for
release early next year, so the 26-year-old
singer encouraged her “little monsters”
to request iPads for Christmas.
Lady Gaga finally will make her way
through North America on the Born
This Way Tour in 2013. The show
slated nearest Texoma will be Jan. 29 at
American Airlines Center in Dallas.
The day after opening the 2012 MTV
Video Music Awards with a combo of
“Cockiness” and “We Found Love,”
Rihanna announced she too will come
to Dallas on her Diamonds World Tour.
But it won’t be until next spring. Fans
might want to save some tax-return
money for tickets to the April 16 concert
at American Airlines Center. Rih Rih
took home a “moonman” trophy for
video of the year (“We Found Love”).
Alicia Keys performed “Girl on Fire”
at the MTV Video Music Awards,
joined by Nicki Minaj and Olympic
gold-medal-winning gymnast Gabby
Douglas. The single was released a
few days earlier in two versions. The
“Inferno” one features two Minaj
rapping segments and a heavy drum
beat. The “Bluelight” one is softer,
more like Keys’ past work. Both rely
heavily on Keys’ powerful vocal talent,
although the latter has a rasp (for the
“bluesy” sound, I assume).
At a Rock the Vote concert Sept. 5
that coincided with the Democratic
14
THE KLBC BUZZ
National Convention in North
Carolina, the Foo Fighters pulled
no punches. Frontman Dave Grohl
said it was gonna be a long night and
commenced to playing 35 of the band’s
own songs and some covers to stretch
the set through three and one-half
hours. Appropriately, “Everlong” was
the closer.
Kanye West hasn’t had a solo album
in almost two years, but he still was
able to garner the most BET Hip-Hop
Awards nominations with 17. He’s
been busy as a producer, director
and performer. Collaborations have
included “Watch the Throne” with
Jay-Z (released in August 2011)
and his GOOD Music label product
“Cruel Summer.”
“Ice Ice Baby” goes well with a session
on the elliptical machine. But the
1990 Vanilla Ice hit apparently goes
great with Zumba. A freshly remixed
version is being incorporated into the
music- and dance-based fitness classes
worldwide. And the routine in the
video incorporates the rapper’s “oldschool moves.” The club-inspired,
Latin-infused twist on the tune is
available through digital outlets such
as iTunes.
Vanilla Ice has stayed busy. He
appeared as himself in this year’s
Adam Sandler comedy “That’s My
Boy.” He’s filming the third season
of “The Vanilla Ice Project,” which
shows off his home-renovation skills,
plus the “Ice My House” specials
for contest winners. He wants to
collaborate with Zumba again to
perform at future conventions. New
music is on the to-do list too. When
he gets the opportunity, he said, he’s
going to “marinate in the studio.”
The Rolling Stones will throw in two
new songs — “Gloom and Doom”
and “One Last Shot” — with greatesthits collection “GRRR!” The set will
be available Nov. 13 in four formats.
It’s the iconic band’s 50th anniversary,
so each one will offer at least 50
songs that include “Start Me Up,” “(I
Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “Honky
Tonk Women” and “Jumping Jack
Flash.” Fans just have to decide what
combination (CDs or vinyl, booklets or
hardbacks, posters, etc.) best suits them.
Start saving now.
Justin Bieber recorded a voiceover
for the Sept. 30 episode of “The
Simpsons.” (Sorry, fans, the
announcement was too late for the
September issue.) In “The Fabulous
Faker Boy,” Bieber’s animated
character “tries to get into a talent
show that Bart is playing piano in
and they won’t admit him.” Some
others lending their voices to the 24th
season: “New Girl” actress/She &
Him singer Zooey Deschanel, Steve
Carell, Anne Hathaway, Natalie
Portman and composer Marvin
Hamlisch (who died the month after
his participation was reported).
One Direction’s latest single, “Live
While We’re Young,” will arrive Oct.
1. It will be the first from the group’s
second album, which won’t be released
until November. Still, that’s less than
a year after the quintet’s debut album
(“Up All Night”) came out. “What
Makes You Beautiful” and “One
Thing” helped the guys become quite
popular in their native United Kingdom
and the United States.
the California “rock” band will go by
Uncharted Shores.
will.i.am has new solo album
“#willpower” slated for Oct. 15 release.
Britney Spears collaborated on a track,
“Sexy Sexy.” And the Black Eyed Peas
member/record producer booked a
mentoring gig alongside Spears on
“The X Factor” during the “judge’s
home” round.
TobyMac’s “Eye On It” became the
first Christian album in almost 15 years
to hit No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard
200 chart. It’s only the third to ever do
that. LeAnn Rimes’ “You Light Up
My Life: Inspirational Songs” did
in November 1997, several months
after Bob Carlisle’s “Butterfly Kisses
(Shades of Grace)” landed at the top
for two weeks.
As readers might recall, a U.S. group
formed as One Direction in November
2009 had filed a lawsuit against Simon
Cowell’s record company for using the
same name for his United Kingdom
“X Factor” product. BBC News
reported the label counter-sued. Now
“American Idol” Season 11 finalist
Colton Dixon signed a recording deal
with a major label (EMI CMG Label
Group/Sparrow Records). Dixon’s
first single, “You Are,” is supposed
to impact radio Oct. 19 — his 21st
birthday. His debut album won’t be
available until February. Dixon said in a
statement: “Two of the most important
things in my life have always been my
faith and my music. I am now blessed
with the chance to combine both of
these passions.”

Life’s path a happier place with true friend
By Gerald Tidwell
I
s there anyone who does not need
a good friend? Who can thrive in
life without the encouragement and
endurance of friendship? In prison,
the apostle Paul wanted only his friend,
Timothy, to come to him before winter,
before the cold set in, before the end
of his earthly days.
Our Lord, Jesus
Christ, in the garden
of Gethsemane
begged His friends
to stay awake and
stay with Him so
His agony was not
accompanied by
total aloneness.
(Matthew 26:38)
Are we any
Gerald
different in our need
Tidwell
for friends? Not in
the least, so I want to write this article
for the encouragement and endurance
of friendship.
Loneliness is epidemic. It is estimated
that one out of four of us suffer from
mild to moderate depression due to
loneliness and unfriendly isolation. Part
of the reason centers on the “I/me”
generation. We have been deridingly
gorging ourselves the past decade.
Frank Sinatra sang, “I did it my way,
look out for No. 1.” But “me only” can
leave us very lonely. More than ever,
all of us need the encouragement and
endurance of friendship.
Life deals some pretty tough blows.
In our own living rooms, frustration
tugs at us. Someone was asked about
the secret of his long and useful life and
instantly answered, “I had a friend.”
And what a difference He makes in
your life and mine.
To discover the encouragement of
friendship, we ask ourselves, “How can
we encourage each other in friendship?”
You begin with love, caring and
respect. It sounds trite, but that’s what
it is. Paul wrote from a Roman prison to
Timothy and called him “my beloved”
(2 Timothy 1:1-2). Can you not feel the
intimacy in those words? Paul was
locked up in Roman prison, yet the
intimate presence of Jesus never can be
locked out. If you have one honest, forbetter-or-worse friend in your life, you
are most blessed.
The heart of intimacy is so beautiful
and peaceful, for there are no reasons
to defend ourselves. There’s no need
to prove ourselves to others. We
can be ourselves in the presence of
everyone else. When I think of friends,
I think of two persons — Wendell and
Edith. Their first child was affected
by spasticity, and they asked Jesus to
Premium Same-Day Dentures
Adult General Dentistry
give them love for this little, helpless
daughter. They did such a great job,
they began taking in other spastic
children. I can remember reading about
the fact they had 60 precious kids to
take care of and they had a waiting list
of 500 or more. When Jesus becomes
your personal friend, He gives you His
love to share.
Irish playwright George Bernard
Shaw once sent two tickets for the
opening night of his new play to
Winston Churchill, along with a note:
“Bring a friend, if you have one.”
Churchill returned the tickets, also with
a note: “Sorry, but I’m engaged that
evening. Please send these tickets to a
friend, if you have one.”
Encouraging friendship inspires you.
You become alive to your potential and
possibilities, just knowing that your
friends are there. What inspiration
comes to you and me when we all
know, down deep in our bones, that
God is our eternal friend who will
never ever forsake us.
Most of us are afraid to be ourselves
because we might lose friends. It affects
our self-perceptions and presentations,
how much we know, how we look, what
we do. It is better to be hated for who
we are than loved for who we are not.
Believe me, true friends are those who
accept you for who you are, who are
intimate with you and inspire you to
great heights and stand by you through
life’s valleys. If you get that, you will
experience the endurance of friendship.
Friends stick by one another through the
bitterness of a difficult life.
Friendship helps you endure life.
When Paul walked through the valley
of death’s shadow, he went with
three friends. There was Luke, the
good physician. There was young
Timothy, the beloved, whose intimacy
encouraged Paul’s life until the end.
And, of course, our Lord was with Paul.
He would never leave him. The old
saint endured because of his friends.
I suspect, as you read this, there is
someone you know whose face flashes
before your eyes and memory, who
is facing a cold winter of loneliness.
You could be like Timothy and Paul to
that person. Don’t wait. Come before
winter. Don’t be like Thomas Carlyle,
the Scottish historian, who wrote in his
diary after the death of his neglected
wife, “Oh, that I had you, yet for five
minutes by my side, that I might tell
you all.”
Come before winter. How
encouraging and enduring your
friendship will be. When it’s intimate,
encouraging and accepting, life is better,
wouldn’t you agree?

Spooky stuff at box office of course
Also something for funny bones and a thriller
By Michelle Pierce
Victor and Sparky in
“Frankenweenie” — a new
stop-motion, animated comedy
from director Tim Burton.
Oct. 5
‘Frankenweenie’
Starring: voices of Winona Ryder,
Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, Martin
Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer,
Robert Capron, Conchata Ferrell
Rating: PG
(thematic elements;
scary images;
action)
Summary: Young
Victor misses his
dog, Sparky, so
he decides to use
science to bring
back Sparky. When
people find out that
Michelle
Victor can raise the
Pierce
dead, he runs into a
host of problems as others want to use
his science for their own means.
The Buzz: This is a black-and-white,
stop-motion animated movie from
Tim Burton, which is a great outlet
for his particular style. Plus, it looks
like it has the same kind of feel as
“The Nightmare Before Christmas”
and “Corpse Bride.” If those movies
appealed to you, this should be on your
to-see list for the month.
‘Sinister’
Starring: Ethan Hawke, Vincent
D’Onofrio, James Ransone, Fred Dalton
Thompson, Nicholas King, Clare Foley,
Victoria Leigh, Juliet Rylance, Michael
Hall D’Addario
Rating: R (disturbing violent images;
some terror)
Summary: A novelist moves his
family to a new house while he’s
writing his next story. While there, he
finds a box of home videos in the attic.
All the videos show previous families
who lived in the house being brutally
murdered, and watching them might
have put his own family at risk to the
supernatural evil that lives within.
The Buzz: The trailer is suitably
creepy, and since it’s rated R, they
won’t pull any punches with the scares.
Early reviews stated that, despite other
20
THE KLBC BUZZ
Walt Disney Pictures
problems, “Sinister” is indeed scary. If
that’s what you’re looking for, this is
your movie for the weekend.
‘Taken 2’
Starring: Liam Neeson, Maggie
Grace, Famke Janssen, Rade
Sherbedgia, Luke Grimes
Rating: PG-13 (intense sequences of
violence, action; some sensuality)
Summary: While vacationing in
Istanbul, Bryan and his wife are taken
by the father of one of the kidnappers
who took his daughter. With his
daughter’s help, Bryan once again will
use his very particular set of skills to
take back what is his.
The Buzz: It’s going to be another two
hours of Liam Neeson kicking tail and
taking names, and that’s what made
“Taken” so awesome. Who DOESN’T
want to see this?
Oct. 12
‘Argo’
Starring: Ben Affleck, Alan Arkin,
Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Kerry
Bishe, Kyle Chandler, Rory Cochrane,
Christopher Denham, Tate Donovan,
Clea DuVall, Victor Garber, Zeljko
Ivanek, Richard Kind, Scoot McNairy,
Chris Messina, Michael Parks, Taylor
Schilling
Rating: R (language; some violent
images)
Summary: Based on the true story
of the Canadian Caper during the Iran
hostage crisis. Six American diplomats
escape the embassy in Tehran after it’s
stormed by militants and take refuge
in the home of a Canadian ambassador.
Meanwhile, a CIA “exfiltration” expert
comes up with a risky plan to get them
all to safety — that the diplomats are
actually part of a Hollywood scouting
crew, doing location shots for a movie.
The Buzz: Ben Affleck’s previous
directing efforts have been goodto-great, and this looks like a really
interesting movie about a fascinating
true story.
‘Here Comes the Boom’
Starring: Kevin James, Salma Hayek,
Henry Winkler
Rating: Unavailable
Summary: When his school has to
raise $48,000 or cut extracurricular
programs, an apathetic biology teacher
decides to start mixed martial arts
fighting as a way to raise the money.
The Buzz: This looks better than most
of Kevin James’s other movies. Not
quite good enough to wholeheartedly
recommend it, but the trailer was better
than “Zookeeper.” Maybe check it out
at a matinee if you’re looking for a more
family-friendly movie this weekend.
Oct. 19
‘Alex Cross’
Starring: Tyler Perry, Matthew Fox,
Edward Burns, Rachel Nichols, Jean Reno
Rating: PG-13 (violence including
disturbing images; sexual content;
language; drug references; nudity)
Summary: Based on the James
Patterson novel “Cross,” detective Alex
Cross meets his match in a vicious serial
killer. The two face off in a high-stakes
game of cat and mouse.
The Buzz: While the cast looks good,
director Rob Cohen is better known for
action-oriented movies like “The Fast
and the Furious,” “xXx” and “Stealth.”
None of those were particularly good,
so I don’t have a lot of faith in his
ability to handle a detective thriller. You
might want to skip this one or just wait
for the DVD.
‘Killing Them Softly’
Starring: Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini,
Sam Rockwell, Richard Jenkins, Bella
Heathcote, Vincent Curatola, Ray
Liotta, Scoot McNairy, Ben Mendelsohn,
Linara Washington
Rating: R (violence, sexual references,
pervasive language, and some drug use)
Summary: A mob enforcer
investigates a heist that occurred during
the mob’s poker game. Based on the
novel “Cogan’s Trade” by George V.
Higgins.
The Buzz: Early word on this movie
is pretty positive, and they’ve got a
good cast, particularly for a mob movie.
It looks like a serious version of some
of Guy Ritchie’s movies (like “Snatch”).
Check it out if you get a chance.
‘Paranormal Activity 4’
Starring: Unavailable
Rating: Unavailable
Summary: The fourth film in the
series, which picks up where the second
film left off. The tagline: “All of the
activity has led to this.”
The Buzz: Another October, another
“Paranormal Activity” movie. If the
tagline is to be believed, this might
be the last one. If you liked the first
three, you probably will want to see
this one.
Oct. 26
‘Chasing Mavericks’
Starring: Gerard Butler, Elisabeth
Shue, Leven Rambin, Abigail Spencer
Rating: PG (thematic elements; some
perilous action)
Summary: A California surfing legend
takes a young man under his wing
on his quest to surf California’s most
dangerous wave. Based on the true
story of surfer Jay Moriarty.
The Buzz: The director has done a
good job with dramas in the past (“8
Mile,” “In Her Shoes”), so this seems
right up his alley. Plus, it doesn’t look
quite like the standard inspirational
sports story. Give it a chance.
‘Cloud Atlas’
Starring: Tom Hanks, Halle Berry,
Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim
Sturgess, Doona Bae, Ben Whishaw,
James D’Arcy, Xun Zhou, Keith
David, David Gyasi, Susan Sarandon,
Hugh Grant
Rating: R (violence; language;
sexuality/nudity; some drug use)
Summary: Set in the past, present
and future, the film explores how the
choices an individual makes shape his/
her life and the lives of everybody else.
The Buzz: This is the newest movie
from the Wachowskis, and I can’t
decide if it will be more like “The
Matrix” or “The Matrix Revolutions.” It
definitely looks beautiful, and they’ve
got a great cast. But then again, the last
two “Matrix” movies looked pretty too.
Approach with caution.
DVD releases
‘Fun Size’
Starring: Victoria Justice, Thomas
Mann, Thomas McDonell, Thomas
Middleditch, Chelsea Handler
Rating: Unavailable
Summary: A high-school junior is
forced to miss the party of the year
when her mother makes her take her
little brother trick-or-treating. When the
teen loses her brother in all the trickor-treaters, she has to find him and get
home before her mother does.
The Buzz: This seems like another
version of “Adventures in Babysitting.”
Nothing in particular stands out about
the trailer. It seems to be the usual
teen-mayhem movie, and the director’s
pretty much only done television so
far. If you’re looking for a Halloween
movie this weekend, this is your option.
Otherwise, you might just want to wait
for DVD.
‘Silent Hill: Revelation 3D’
Starring: Adelaide Clemens, Sean
Bean, Kit Harington, Radha Mitchell,
Oct. 2

Summary: Heather and her father

‘Steel Magnolias’ remake to debut
‘Walking Dead’ stepping out a bit early, ‘American Horror Story’ returning
By Regina Phillips

“Raising Hope,” to return at 7 p.m.
Oct. 2 on Fox, will welcome a few guest
stars in multiple episodes. Melanie
Griffith (“Working Girl,” “Now and
Then”) has been cast as Sabrina’s
(Shannon Woodward’s) narcissistic
mother and Wilmer Valderrama (Fez
on “That ‘70s Show”) as a guy who’s
pursuing her. Plus, Griffith’s reallife mom will play her rich, recently
deceased mother. Tippi Hedren
— who starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s
“The Birds” in 1963 — will appear
in a casket and alive via videotaped
message. Hedren told TVGuide.com
that one of her scenes with Maw Maw
(Cloris Leachman) is “one of the
funniest things you’ll ever see.”
“Hart of Dixie” Season 2 will start at
7 p.m. Oct. 2 on The CW. The third
episode (to air Oct. 16) and at least one
more will feature Broadway star and
country singer Laura Bell Bundy. She’ll
play Shelby, a potential love interest for
George (Scott Porter).
The final season of “30 Rock” will
premiere at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 on NBC. Guest
stars already announced are Bryan
Cranston (star of “Breaking Bad”),
Catherine O’Hara (“Beetlejuice,”
“Home Alone,” “Best in Show”) and
Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte.
“Parks and Recreation” will welcome
Lucy Lawless for at least two episodes,
starting Oct. 4. The actress — known
as the star of “Xena: Warrior Princess”
and for roles in “Battlestar Galactica”
and “Spartacus” — will play single
mom Diane. When she has a problem
in her neighborhood, Ron (Nick
Offerman) and Andy (Chris Pratt) are
dispatched to help. Could be a spark
between her and Ron.
The “Jersey Shore” sixth and final season
will start at 9 p.m. Oct. 4 on MTV.
Scott Baio will return to television
Oct. 6. The 52-year-old actor best

known as Chachi in “Happy Days”
and Charles of “Charles in Charge”
will star in Nick at Nite’s first original
comedy. “See Dad Run” has Baio
playing David Hobbs, an actor making
the transition from America’s favorite
TV dad to a real-life stay-at-home
father whose soap-star wife (Alanna
Ubach) is going back to work.
Lifetime’s remake of “Steel
Magnolias” will debut at 8 p.m.
Oct. 7. The cast: Queen Latifah as
M’Lynn, Phylicia Rashad as Clairee,
Alfre Woodard as Ouiser, Jill Scott as
Truvy, Condola Rashad as Shelby and
Adepero Oduye as Annelle.
“The Simpsons” annual “Treehouse of
Horror” episode will air at 7 p.m. Oct.
7 on Fox. Expect spoofs of the Mayan
prophecy of the world’s end and the
“Paranormal Activity” movies, plus a
sort of allusion to “Back to the Future.”
Disney Channel’s music-themed
comedy “Austin & Ally” will be back
for a second season at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 7.
For those who didn’t notice Sept. 16
and 23, CBS pushed back start times for
its prime-time programming Sunday
nights on days the network has an NFL
double-header. Series are scheduled to
begin a half-hour later Oct. 7 and 21,
Nov. 4 and 18, and Dec. 2, 16 and 30.
CBS also has an “Eye-lert System” that
allows viewers to sign up on its website
to receive text messages, Twitter tweets,
Facebook updates and/or e-mail alerts
regarding delays. Football overruns
aren’t uncommon, and the National
Football League moving afternoon
kickoff times to 3:25 p.m. adds 10
minutes to the likelihood.
Carly Rae Jepsen, the Canadian singer
of “Call Me Maybe,” will appear on
the Season 5 premiere of “90210” at 7
p.m. Oct. 8 on The CW. Jepsen, 26, will
perform a song from her new album
as the music headliner for Adrianna’s
(Jessica Lowndes) Las Vegas premiere.
In November, viewers can expect to see
and hear Nelly Furtado and Ne-Yo.
“Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”
— starring Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan
Fillion and Felicia Day — will make
its television debut at 8 p.m. Oct. 9
on The CW. It was created as a threepart online musical in 2008 by Joss
Whedon (“The Avengers,” “Buffy
the Vampire Slayer”). Harris (“How
I Met Your Mother”) is Billy, aka Dr.
Horrible, a budding super villain whose
plans for world domination always
go awry. Fillion (“Firefly,” “Castle”) is
his superhero arch nemesis, Captain
Hammer, and Day (“The Guild”) his
laundromat crush, Penny.
Lifetime ordered 10 episodes of
new reality series “Abby’s Ultimate
Dance Competition,” starring “Dance
Moms” instructor Abby Lee Miller.
It’s set to debut at 8 p.m. Oct. 9.
Miller will be lead judge, joined by
Pussycat Dolls founder Robin Antin
and choreographer Richard Jackson.
A dozen girl and boy dancers (ages
6-13) will compete in challenges and
perform for a $100,000 cash prize
and a scholarship to the Joffrey Ballet
School’s Young Dancer Program. One is
eliminated each week.
FX comedies “It’s Always Sunny in
Philadelphia,” “The League” and
“BrandX with Russell Brand” will
return Oct. 11, starting at 9 p.m.
Disney Channel’s next original
TV movie, “Girl vs. Monster,” will
premiere at 7 p.m. Oct. 12 as part of
its Halloween-themed month. Olivia
Holt (“Kickin’ It”) stars as a 15-yearold singer who discovers she’s part of
a long line of monster hunters. A sneak
peak will be shown Oct. 5, as the cast
hosts a night of programming.
Disney Channel and Radio Disney
will launch the fifth season of
music talent competition “N.B.T.
(Next Big Thing)” during “Girl vs.
Monster” (airing at 7 p.m. Oct. 12). All
contestants are ages 12-17. They are:
R&B sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey;
acoustic singer Katherine Hughes;
R&B singer/dancer Damian Otchere;
modern rocker Jack Skuller; and pop
singer Elle Winter. Each artist’s first
singles will debuted in September on
Radio Disney and become available
for sale on iTunes. Starting Oct. 26,
fans may vote 10 times per day per
platform (Facebook, text, website).
“The Walking Dead” Season 3 will kick
off at 8 p.m. Oct. 14 on AMC.
“The Mindy Project” will feature
three professional basketball players in
the Oct. 16 episode. New York Knick
Amar’e Stoudemire, Indiana Pacer
Danny Granger and free agent Baron
Davis will play themselves. The Fox
sitcom is on at 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays.
MTV will debut a new “dramedy” at
9 p.m. Oct. 16. “Underemployed” will
follow five friends who are a year out
of college. Two guys and three young
women try to stay optimistic through
dead-end jobs, terrible bosses and
romantic mistakes.
“American Horror Story” will return
at 9 p.m. Oct. 17 on FX. Rather than
the ghostly house in Season 1, this
round will move to an asylum in the
1960s. The mental institution is run by
Sister Jude, played by Jessica Lange,
who’s one of the few actors returning
in different roles. Adam Levine of
Maroon 5 and NBC’s “The Voice” will
guest-star as one half of “the lovers,”
opposite Jenna Dewan (real-life wife of
Channing Tatum).
“RuPaul’s All-Stars Drag Race” will
begin Oct. 22 on Logo. This season will
welcome Vicki Lawrence as her “Carol
Burnett Show”/”Mama’s Family”
character, Thelma Harper. She’ll help
determine the winner of a challenge
in which contestants dress as famous
funny females and write and perform
a comedy sketch with her, according to
the veteran comedian. She said viewers
will see a Bette Davis, Bea Arthur,
Charo, Lucille Ball, Shakira and Fran
Dresher. Other judges booked include
Kelly Osbourne, Elvira, Busy Philipps,
Rachel Dratch and Cheri Oteri.
“Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment
23” will return at 8:30 p.m. Oct. 23
on ABC, and it will be a bit of a
“Dawson’s Creek” reunion. Star James
Van Der Beek will be reunited with
Busy Philipps in the episode that also
will feature Mark-Paul Gosselaar
(“Saved by the Bell”) and Frankie
Muniz (“Malcolm in the Middle”) as
themselves.
“American Idol” Season 8 runner-up
Adam Lambert will perform two songs
on the Oct. 23 Halloween-themed
episode of ABC Family’s “Pretty Little
Liars.” He’ll probably have a little time
without a microphone in front of his
mouth too.
American swimmer and 11-time
Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte
will appear in the Oct. 29 episode
of “90210.” He’ll be a guest at a
resort where Naomi (AnnaLynne
McCord) and Max (Josh Zuckerman)
are staying to strengthen their
relationship. The series is on at 7 p.m.
Mondays on The CW.
Kendall Jenner will make her acting
debut on “Hawaii Five-0” in October.
Part of E!’s “Keeping Up with the
Kardashians,” she’s also worked as a
model. Kendall will be 17 Nov. 3.
Annie Potts (“Designing Women,”
“GCB”) has been cast on NBC comedy
“Animal Practice” as veterinarian
George Coleman’s (Justin Kirk’s)
mother. Virginia reportedly is snobbish,
racist and self-absorbed. The show airs
at 7 p.m. Wednesdays.
The Old Spice guy will guest-star on
“Nikita.” Isaiah Mustafa’s character
could be one of the “Dirty 30” on The
CW spy drama.
Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas
has landed a cameo on “The Vampire
Diaries.” The CW drama is the goldmedal winner’s favorite show.
“Last Man Standing” will look
somewhat different when it returns
at 7 p.m. Nov. 2 on ABC. Tim Allen
and Nancy Travis will be the same,
but not some of their on-set family.
Eldest daughter Kristin will be played
by Amanda Fuller, who appeared in
several “Grey’s Anatomy” episodes
last season as a doctor/mom of a
preemie. Little Boyd was recast. Also,
Boyd’s daddy was played by Nick
Jonas in Season 1, but since the role
will be expanded, it’s been given to
Jordan Masterson (Dumptruck on ABC
Family’s “Greek”).
Lifetime will debut “Liz & Dick” in
November. The TV movie stars Lindsay
Lohan as Elizabeth Taylor.
Randy Jackson — the only remaining
original “American Idol” judge
— will be joined by Mariah Carey,
Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj for the
show’s 12th season. The Fox singing
competition tried the four-member
panel in 2009 and 2010. I presume
there will be a side contest between
Jackson and Minaj to see who wears
the most outlandish outfit. Urban,
who turns 45 Oct. 26, passed on a
second season with “The Voice” in his
native Australia a few days before the
official announcement.
“The Voice” Season 3 had just started
when NBC announced two coaches
won’t appear in the next installment.
Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green
will be replaced by Usher and Shakira
(who just announced she’s pregnant, so
she’ll have a “plus one” on the panel).
Aguilera plans to tour to promote her
new album. Green is going to work
on new music and a scripted comedy
about his life. Blake Shelton and Adam
Levine will return.
Jillian Michaels will be back when
“The Biggest Loser” begins again in
January. She left the reality weightloss competition in 2011 after 11
seasons. Trainers Bob Harper and
Dolvett Quince will stay. Season 14
will feature teen contestants (ages 13
to 17) for the first time, in addition
to adults. Each of the three trainers
will coach an adult team with one
teen. The young ones won’t face
elimination. Open casting calls were
conducted this summer, with a July 21
opportunity in Dallas.
new seasons to start in the spring.
“Jane by Design” was canceled after
only one season.
“Eastbound & Down” won’t end after
three seasons after all. HBO ordered a
fourth of the comedy starring Danny
McBride as crude former Major League
Baseball pitcher Kenny Powers.
MTV will bring back “Snooki &
JWoww” for a second season.
FX ordered 90 more episodes of Charlie
Sheen sitcom “Anger Management.”
Fox ordered a second season of Gordon
Ramsay’s “Hotel Hell.”
Showtime renewed “Episodes,”
starring Matt LeBlanc (“Friends”), for a
nine-episode third season.
AMC is cutting “The Killing” from
its lineup after two seasons, but the
mystery series could be revived
elsewhere. Fox Television Studios
produces the show and plans to “shop
it around” to other networks.
It’s curtains for “Gene Simmons:
Family Jewels” after seven seasons.
A&E is ending the reality show about
the KISS bassist, his longtime partner
Shannon Tweed and their two kids.
A&E renewed “The Glades” for a
fourth season.
TBS ordered a 10-episode second
season of “Sullivan & Son.” The
comedy stars Steve Byrne as a
corporate attorney who leaves
Manhattan to take over his parents’
Pittsburgh bar.
“Tosh.0” was renewed for a 30-episode
fifth season. Hosted by Daniel Tosh,
it’s become Comedy Central’s highestrated series.
Bravo renewed Kathy Griffin’s talk
show. “Kathy” will start its second
season in January.
Animal Planet renewed “Call of the
Wildman” for another season. More
adventures of Ernie Brown Jr., “The
Turtleman,” to air in 2013.

CBS will do a 15th edition of “Big

ABC Family ordered more episodes

This series might be a little
melodramatic for my taste. Then again,
ABC’s “Once Upon a Time” is and I’ve
stayed with it. I really like its female cast
though (Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer
Morrison and Lana Parrilla), and I don’t
have a point of reference for this beauty
and beast. Kristin Kreuk was Lana in
“Smallville,” which I didn’t watch. Jay
Ryan is from New Zealand and did more
of his work in Australia. Oh well. I’d give
it a chance if my DVR wasn’t overbooked
in this time slot.
icking up where I left off in the
previous issue, The CW is rolling
out three freshman series in
October. There also will be one
delayed start on NBC and two on ABC.
Network synopsis: Billionaire playboy
Oliver Queen was missing and presumed
dead for five years after a violent
shipwreck. Then he was discovered alive
on a remote island in the Pacific. He’s
welcomed home to Starling City by his
mother, younger sister and best friend, but
they sense Oliver has been changed by his
ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides
the truth about the man he’s become, he
wants to make amends for his previous
actions. And he secretly creates the
persona of Arrow — a vigilante to right
his family’s wrongs, fight society’s ills and
restore Starling City to its former glory.
The Buzz: Of course, the comic-book
crowd is all over this. And it’s drawn a big
stamp of approval. Then, the promotional
poster looks like a “Magic Mike” act in a
Robin Hood get-up (although with some
serious scars). I’m sure that’s effective
in capturing the attention of all who can
be lured by six-pack abs and other bare

viewing public not necessarily interested
in stuff like “90210” and “Gossip Girl.”
I’ve read that Stephen Amell plays a
character much different than the Green
Arrow featured on “Smallville.” He
doesn’t have superpowers. The vision
for the series was modeled more after
Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight.”
The people who sculpted this series put
a lot of thought into everything having
a practical purpose, being rooted in
reality. Not decked out in some elaborate
costume, “the hood guy” is a man on a
mission rather than a fantastical figure. I
prefer it that way, and I’m surprised to say
I’d like to see if the concepts are conveyed
on the small screen.
“Beauty and the Beast”
8 p.m. Oct. 11 (Thursdays)
Network synopsis: Catherine “Cat”
Chandler is a smart, no-nonsense
homicide detective. But she’s haunted by
the memory of witnessing, as a teen, her
mother murdered by two gunmen. She
would have been killed too if someone
— or something — hadn’t saved her.
Although she believed the terrifying
figure was human, no one else did.
Investigating a new case leads her to
discover a military doctor reportedly
killed a decade ago is alive. He’s had to
conceal a monstrous alter-ego triggered
by rage that transforms him into a beast
unable to control his super-strength and
heightened senses.
The Buzz: I’m not the first to point out
this Victor doesn’t look beastly at all. I
remember the series from the ‘80s with
Linda Hamilton and a lion-like creature in
the drainage tunnel.
The creative minds behind this series
decided they (therefore an audience)
could relate better to a character who’s
alluring on the outside, beastly in a way
not readily seen. Don’t we encounter
in everyday life those people who look
much better than what eventually comes
out from the inside?
Some ugliness just can’t be fixed.
But this Vincent Keller was in medical
school until 9/11 moved him to join the
Army. In Afghanistan, he became part
of a DNA-altering experiment to create
super soldiers. That’s the way to set up
a character to have real heart and be the
love interest when also tacking on the Mr.
Hyde side.
Network synopsis: After graduating
medical school, Emily Owens finally
feels she is putting her geeky high-school
days behind her and becoming an actual
adult. She’s beginning an internship
at Denver Memorial Hospital, where
her med-school crush also is an intern,
and she will be learning from a worldfamous cardiothoracic surgeon. But she
soon discovers her high-school nemesis
also is there and will be competing to
impress the same mentor. The hospital
starts to seem very much like high school
— bullies, cliques and all.
The Buzz: I did not have any interest in
this show. Then, I watched the previews.
The best comparison I can think of would
be a hospital-based “Mean Girls.” It
made me laugh unexpectedly. More like a
chuckle, but still.
Meryl Streep’s daughter, Mamie
Gummer, is the titular character. Justin
Hartley, who was the Green Arrow on
“Smallville,” plays Emily’s fellow intern
and crush. The show’s creator has worked
as a writer and producer on series such
as “90210,” “Gilmore Girls” and “Lipstick
Jungle,” and she penned the screenplay
for 2011’s “Something Borrowed.”
I think it has potential. Fans of comedic
dramas and those who can identify
with the main character are more likely
to enjoy it. The “clique” thing they’re
doing? Reminded me my brother,
who recently graduated from medical
school, said it was funny how certain
personality types gravitate toward
particular fields of practice.
Anyway, this just happens to be another
instance in which my DVR already has
other appointments.

Sizzle or fizzle?
“Chicago Fire”
9 p.m. Oct. 10 (Wednesdays)
Network synopsis: For the team at
Chicago Firehouse 51, no occupation
is more stressful or dangerous, yet so
rewarding and exhilarating. These
men and women are among the elite
who forge headfirst into danger when
everyone else is running
the other way and
their actions make the
difference between life
and death. The pressure
to perform on such a high level has a
way of taking a personal toll, sometimes
putting team members from the truck
and the specially trained rescue squad
at odds with each other. Despite any
differences, this is an extended family,
and when it’s “go time,” everyone inside
Firehouse 51 knows no other way than
to lay it all on the line for each other.
The Buzz: This show hadn’t gotten
the full barrage of coverage like earlier
starters, so it’s hard to get a gauge.
Critics’ reviews cover the spectrum. I’ve
seen comments by firefighters who are
excited about the show, but even many
of those had to critique the realism of
the fire scenes.
Based on network trailers, I’d think the
series will be relying heavily on action/
danger and a good-looking cast. But
executive producer Dick Wolf (“Law &
Order”) has insisted it will be a characterdriven show, rather than a “fire-of-theweek” deal, without putting any actor in
a lead role. That reminds me of “Third
Watch” (NBC, 1999-2002), which I thought
was a good one.
Still, it seems those at the forefront are
Jesse Spencer (Dr. Chase on “House”)
and Taylor Kinney (Mason Lockwood
on “The Vampire Diaries”). The main
paramedic team is a pair of females,
played by Monica Raymund (“The
Good Wife,” “Lie to Me”) and Lauren
German (“Hawaii Five-O”). If it matters
to ya’, the series’ creators previously
worked together as writers of 2007 film
“3:10 to Yuma.”
I’ll tune in at least once.

Two series gone country
“Nashville”
9 p.m. Oct. 10 (Wednesdays)
Network synopsis: Rayna Jaymes
is a country-music icon, one of the
industry’s top female vocalists for two
decades. When her latest album suffers
lackluster sales, the record label she
helped build gives her an
ultimatum. Rayna must
open tour concerts for
Juliette Barnes, a young
crossover singer who’s the
hottest act around and lighting up
the charts. While Rayna struggles
to reinvent herself, there’s also her
strained relationship with her powerful
businessman father, her husband’s
political aspirations and an ever-present
past love. Juliette is calculating, with an
insatiable appetite for fame, and she’ll
do whatever it takes to leave her hardknocks past behind.
The Buzz: This is virtually a televised
version of how I’ve imagined the
business side of music to be, sort of
like “Country Strong” was on the
big screen. But most of the particular
dramatic circumstances will be different
and aplenty.
Connie Britton is Rayna Jaymes. So,
take into account ABC’s other delayedstart newbie, “Malibu Country,” and
the network has a “ginger hair, country
music” theme going on here. Britton was
in the “Friday Night Lights” movie and
TV show, and starred on the first season
of FX’s “American Horror Story.”
Hayden Panettiere, a blondie, is
Juliette Barnes. Her previous seriestelevision experience was on “Heroes”
(2006-10). I remember her best as the
little girl who knew a whole lot about
football in 2000’s “Remember the
Titans.” And I don’t care how much
she’s grown up since then, in the first
few short trailers, I wanted somebody
to bust her bratty butt. (That’s using
nice “B” words.) If not for a clip that
gave a glimpse of why she might act
that way, I’m pretty certain I wouldn’t
put up with her.
Everyone is doing their own singing
— original songs (from award-winning
musicians such as T-Bone Burnett and
Elvis Costello) and covers of some
popular tunes. That’s respectable.
And another favorable fact, as far as
26
THE KLBC BUZZ
I’m concerned: The pilot was written
by Callie Khouri, who won an Oscar
for her “Thelma & Louise” (1991)
screenplay. Other such credits include
“Something to Talk About” (1995) and
“Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood”
(2002, based on novels).
“Malibu Country”
7:30 p.m. Nov. 2 (Fridays)
Network synopsis: A woman’s
world is turned upside-down when
she discovers her country-music star
husband has a cheatin’ heart. Reba
moves her kids from Nashville to
Malibu — into the last remaining
asset they have, her husband’s former
love nest. She brings along her sharptongued, Southern mother as she tries
to reignite the singing career she put on
hold to raise a family.
The Buzz: This appears quite
reminiscent of “Reba.” No surprise. It is,
after all, still Reba playing a Reba. I can’t
really say that’s a bad thing. The redhead is beloved. And people continue to
watch her former show in syndication.
I didn’t recall hearing or reading
that Lily Tomlin would be in this. That
woman always has made me laugh.
Here, she’ll be playing Reba’s mom,
a character also using her actual first
name. There’s a cool consequence of
casting Tomlin too. Since she is pals
with Carol Burnett, the show-runners
are creating a role for Burnett, per her
request. She could be coming on as the
mother of Reba’s neighbor. And because
the actress playing that girl next door,
Sara Rue, recently surprised everyone
with a pregnancy announcement,
the writers have been extra busy
incorporating all that into the story lines.
The creator credit is given to Dave
Stewart — the non-Annie Lennox half
of Eurythmics. I was surprised, but

I
t was late 2000. Dusty Dvoracek, a
football recruit from Lake Dallas High
School, was on a recruiting visit to the
University of Oklahoma. It was then
he met Teddy Lehman, a Sooner standout
from Fort Gibson.
The pair
immediately forged
a friendship. Both
went on to decorated
football careers at OU
before heading their
separate ways in the
National Football
League.
But the college
buddies stayed in
Jim
touch and spent
Reagan
their off-seasons
together, working out and preparing for
the next year. When it was apparent their
playing careers were soon to be over
due to injuries, Teddy sent Dusty a text:
“Let’s get a radio gig when we get back
to Norman.” And, as they say, the rest is
history.
“The Rush” sports talk show probably
originated from a one-hour “audition”
on KREF radio in Norman. Less than a
year later, Dusty and Teddy are heard on
the weekday afternoon show carried on a
multi-station radio network that includes
KSEO 750 AM in Durant.
Dvoracek and Lehman’s big break
into the broadcasting business came last
November.
Lehman told The KLBC Buzz, “My
wife, Erin, worked out in the same gym
as Randy Lafoone (co-owner of KREF
radio in Norman). She mentioned that
we would like to sit down and meet with
him. He was kind enough to meet with
us. He actually told us he didn’t have
any room to hire us on and was full. We
talked to him for a while, and he said,
‘Why don’t you guys jump on (the radio)

Friends retire from NFL, decide to tackle sports talk radio
Find the right supplies for your projects, plus expert advice
tomorrow for an hour with one of my
guys and we’ll see how it goes.’ It just
went from there. We did that and we filled
in for a couple of times, and by January,
we had our own show. It’s been exciting.”
The pace definitely has quickened
for the pair. In addition to hosting “The
Rush,” they have been tabbed to help
with the Oklahoma Sooner football radio
broadcasts. Dusty and Teddy provide
commentary during the OU football preand post-game shows, and during the
game from the sidelines. That’s something
these two die-hard, crimson-and-creamblooded former players are relishing.
“I’ve become what I used to despise,”
Dvoracek laughed. “This is a necessary
evil. This is how fans have their
connection with their programs, players
and coaches. We’ve been received very
well at OU. We sat down with coach [Bob]
Stoops when we got this gig and told him
what we were doing. He was extremely
receptive to us. He has kind of just opened
the door and let us have some access
— not total access.”
Lehman said, “It is definitely different
interviewing your old coach instead of just
going down to talk with him, guy to guy.”
He said it is sometimes hard to be on the
sidelines during the heat of the action.
“It’s exciting to be down there with the
guys and with the coaching staff. To be
back on the field and to be close to the
game makes you want to play for sure.
I’ll let the young boys play. It’s a young
man’s game.”
It wasn’t that long ago that Dusty
and Teddy were the “young boys.”
They weren’t your average, run-of-themill players. Dvoracek was a two-time
consensus all-Big 12 defensive lineman
before playing with the Chicago Bears.
He started 12 games during the Bears’
2006 season. Lehman’s accolades included
being a two-time All-American linebacker
for the Sooners and being selected as the
2003 Butkus Award winner as the nation’s
best college linebacker. He spent six years
in the NFL and started all 16 games in
two of those seasons during his stints at
Detroit and Buffalo.
The high-speed collision sport of pro
football claimed Dusty and Teddy before
they would have liked. Lehman knew
when it was time to hang it up.
“I had some injuries here and there, and
was nagged by some stuff. It was hard to
get back on the field. I’m happy with it.
Being done now is different. I’ll always
want to play football, but you have got to
know when to let it go when your body
can’t handle it anymore. It’s a brutal sport.
I was lucky to play as long as I did.”
Dvoracek left especially battered.
“My body is beat up. I’ve had five
surgeries in five years. I just couldn’t take
any more. I was beat up and banged out,
and I needed something else.”
So the move into radio was a welcome
transition. Both like their new job so much
that they are considering working in the
media as a career. Dvoracek described
himself as a “sports junkie.”
“I have been one since I was a kid. I
think I know sports pretty well, so I love
to talk about them. I figured, if I ever
get paid to talk about sports since I do it
all the time, that would be awesome. If
they’ll have me and the people like what
they are hearing, I think I’m here to stay. I
can’t imagine doing anything else.”
Lehman also considers sticking with
sports broadcasting an option.
“I think so. It’s going so good. I know
it’s not going to be this meteoric of a rise
for so long. In the beginning, you’re going
to be moving up the ladder pretty quickly.
As long as things keep going good, I’d
like to do it.”
Both are aware what they say on the
radio is being heard by plenty of listeners
on the Internet and in several states.
“When we first got on the network, it
was scary,” Lehman said. “Before, we
were on just in Norman. There were
people listening. Then, when we went
on the network, it was, ‘OK, here we go
statewide.’”
“It’s been really cool,“ Dvoracek said.
”The network just came up and it’s been
very, very, very rewarding for us, for our
station, and for Teddy and me. It’s cool.
But you realize, when you say something
dumb, you just said it to the entire state of
Oklahoma.”
“The Rush,” as expected, has an
Oklahoma Sooner slant. Dvoracek and
Lehman are using their past sports
experiences and contacts to help bolster
the show’s content. Guests have included
former Sooners Gerald McCoy and Sam
Bradford, who now are NFL players.
“The great thing is that we are explayers and we have so many contacts
in the NFL. We have the media as well
as players,” Dvoracek said. “It brings
an aspect to the state of Oklahoma that
nobody has, and it sets us apart from
anybody else.”
It’s obvious while listening to Dusty and
Teddy that they have talked sports before,
and it plays out that way on the radio.
“He’s a friend and a teammate and
someone you are comfortable with,”
Lehman said of Dvoracek. “We have our
arguments and disputes. But at the end of
the day, we’re still friends and we enjoy
it. We joke with each other. It’s the same
thing we always did before — talking
about sports and football — and now we
are doing it on the air.”
Dvoracek described Lehman as a
straight shooter and honest as he can be.
“I couldn’t imagine doing it with
anyone else.”
Dvoracek and Lehman would rather
still be playing football. But they feel
fortunate to be able to stay close to
the game and especially their passion,
Oklahoma University. Both said playing
football at OU was the high watermark
of their athletic endeavors. They were
especially blown away when their images
were included in a video that played
on the scoreboard prior to the Sooners
football home-opener this season.
“It was such an honor that Teddy and
I got to be a part of that. Got the goose
bumps and my hairs were standing up on
my arms. I was all jacked up. If someone
had handed me a helmet, even though
I’m about 60 pounds lighter than I used
to be, I would have sprinted out there and
tried to give ’em all I had.”
Lehman summed up their good fortune
succinctly.
“It’s not very often you get to go to
work and talk sports with your best
friend.”
“The Rush” with Dusty Dvoracek and
Teddy Lehman can be heard locally 3-6
p.m. Monday-Friday on Texoma Talk,

then drove Oliver’s van to a field near
the high-school football field, setting it
and the dead man’s body ablaze. Oliver
reportedly told the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agent interviewing
him that he’d accept any punishment
other than death.

Durant police arrested
a young man they believe responsible
for several auto burglaries and at least
10 destroyed vehicle windows. In
the process, more serious allegations
were filed, including first-degree
rape. Sean Wyatt was identified as
the person using a stolen debit card
twice at an ATM machine. A search
of his apartment turned up several
items reported stolen the previous few
weeks, as well as BB guns. The 20year-old admitted to breaking into the
vehicles and shooting out at least 10 car
windows, according to affidavits filed
in the case. During the investigation,
officers confiscated Wyatt’s personal
cell phone, discovering photos of a
13-year-old girl in various states of
undress and text messages of a sexual
nature. An Oklahoma State Bureau
of Investigation agent interviewed
her and she reportedly told of several
encounters with Wyatt throughout the
previous 12 months or longer.

in an all-terrain vehicle mishap in
Choctaw County. Bradley Northcutt
was a passenger on the four-wheeler

rolled, throwing both men. Northcutt
was in critical condition at Parkland

although he has been making progress,
according to family and friends. Multiple
fundraisers have been conducted since
the accident, and a benefit account is set
up at Shamrock Bank.

funds for operation of fire departments
throughout the county. The first
distributions from the Oklahoma Tax
Commission won’t be available until
December, with taxes going up Oct. 1 on
retail sales throughout Bryan County.
Since a larger animal
shelter was built in Tishomingo a few
years ago, the city began extending
the time a dog or cat was kept. But it
was an informal change. It’s still on the
books that, after three days, the animals
are to be euthanized. A call from a
locally-based celebrity was enough to
give shelter residents at least a short
guaranteed reprieve. City Manager Jack
Yates said, after Miranda Lambert called
his office, he asked the shelter manager
to wait until after the city council took a
look at the policy. News media learned
of the change when Lambert sent a
message on her Twitter account. The
council meeting turned a bit lively when
Lambert’s parents — who head her Mutt
Nation charity — attended, followed by
her husband, the equally fame-endowed
Blake Shelton. According to a report in
the Johnston County Capital Democrat,
Shelton dressed down a council woman,
calling her statements a “load of crap.”
Lambert and Shelton live outside
Tishomingo, near the national wildlife
refuge named for the city. They have
conducted local events in support of the
animal shelter. By the way, it all turned
out fine, since rumors of policy change
were just that. Most animals judged to
be adoptable often have extended stays
before they find a permanent home
and will continue to do so. Lambert
helps find homes for the local mutts by
featuring them on her social network
feeds, including links to animals on
petfinder.com.
Congress voted to allow
pumping of water from Lake Texoma to
resume. It was halted in 2009 after detection of zebra mussels to avoid violating
federal restrictions against interstate
transport of dangerous species, cutting
water supplies for regional districts.
Despite the authorization, at last report,
pumps at the big station between Grandpappy Point and Eisenhower Marina
had yet to kick on. Officials with the
North Texas Municipal Water District
continue to check the science and precautions they’ve been advised will keep
the zebra mussels that have invaded
Texoma from infesting other North Texas
lakes through its use. The tiny shellfish
cling to rocks, brush, boat motors, water
pipes and anywhere else with a bit of
water movement to feed from microscopic plankton in the lake water.

Hello Kitty luggage?
A stowaway made it from China to
Los Angeles. While that’s not entirely
unusual, consider this stowaway was a
cat. The 5-month-old kitten was found
inside a storage container, and it couldn’t
see, walk or make any sounds. It had
traveled the entire three-week voyage
without food or water. They rushed the
kitten to a veterinarian. Since then, the
kitten, named Ni Hao, has thrived. It’s
only sign of trauma is a lingering limp
from muscle atrophy. Ni Hao has been
adopted by a Los Angeles family.
The Buzz Stinger: Whereas my cat
yowls like he’s dying if he goes without
food for three hours.
Trick or treat!
Police in Oregon apprehended a
burglar in a very simple way. They got
a call about a burglary in progress. The
caller claimed to have heard breaking
glass and seen somebody crawling
in through a back window. Officers
arrived and circled the building. Then,
they rang the doorbell. The burglar ran
to the back window but saw he was
surrounded by police. So he went back
to the front door and surrendered. He
was charged with first-degree burglary
and first-degree criminal mischief.
The Buzz Stinger: “Knock knock.”
“Who’s there?” “Police.” “Police who?”
“Police open the door and come out
with your hands up!”
Old-school bartering
A convenience-store clerk in South
Carolina has lost his job and been
arrested after trading ice cream for
illegal narcotics. Store cameras caught
him accepting the drugs as payment
for $34 worth of ice cream. This is not
the first time he’s done this, apparently.
Deputies said he’d committed a similar
offense at a different convenience store.
He was released from jail on a $2,000
bond. Officers later arrested the man

who exchanged the drugs for ice cream.
The Buzz Stinger: So you’re saying I
shouldn’t try to buy my groceries with
Sudafed tablets?
Those weren’t food stamps
A man in New York has been arrested
for trying to use counterfeit bills at
an amusement park, but he tried to
dispose of the bills in a rather odd way.
He’d paid for some french fries with a
$50 bill, but the clerk realized it was a
fake and called security. While the man
was being dragged away, he stuffed five
other bills in his mouth and attempted
to eat them. Alas, his efforts were in
vain, and he was arrested. He claimed
he’d been paid with the money for a
construction job.
The Buzz Stinger: So whose job is it
to collect the evidence if he had, in fact,
succeeded in eating it?
Caught by fish tale
A man in Austin is in big trouble after
bragging about a big catch on a fishing
forum. He posted that he’d “put around
40 fish in the boat with 22 keepers,” and
included photos of 15 large-mouth bass
on the back of his boat. The problem?
That’s three times the legal limit. Other
fisherman warned him he was going to
get in trouble, but he ignored them. He
claimed he deserved to take that many
since he normally throws them back,
and he had family in town for a fish
fry. However, the county game warden
found out what he’d done, thanks to
other fishermen notifying the Texas
Parks and Wildlife Department. The
game warden said the man faces a fine
of as much as $500 per fish.
The Buzz Stinger: Dude, it would’ve
been cheaper just to go to Red Lobster.
Rockin’ the clink
A New Hampshire woman might
have set her own kind of record after
getting arrested four times in 26 hours.
At first, they just issued her a warning
for blasting loud music (particularly
AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell”). An hour
later, the music was still going, so they
came back and arrested her. Five hours
later, she was arrested again. She was
released after that, but she was arrested
again just before dawn for, once again,
loud music. Police took her into custody
the fourth time when she threw a frying
pan at her nephew after he tried to take
some of his things out of her house. A
judge recommended that she start using
headphones.
The Buzz Stinger: Things would’ve
been totally fine if she’d been playing
the Rolling Stones.
Sweet hunt
An 8-year-old boy from Illinois gets
the “heartwarming story of the month”
award. When he found out his 2-yearold neighbor had leukemia, he wanted
to do whatever he could to help. Then,
a local bank conducted a scavenger
hunt with a grand prize of $1,000.
The boy and his mother went around
collecting the 20 clues for the hunt and
ended up being the first team to turn
them in, winning the grand prize. What
did he do with his $1,000? He gave it
— all of it —to his neighbor’s parents
misheard lyrics
for her chemotherapy. And that’s not
all. A local charity found out about the
gift and matched it, and a man from
Canada even sent $100 to help.
The Buzz Stinger: And what did you
do this week?
Automobile sacrifice
Let’s be honest. How many of us
would wreck our car (a very expensive
car) without thinking twice? One
Canadian Hummer driver did just that.
He’d just dropped off his girlfriend
at the mall and was waiting at an
intersection when he saw four kids
crossing. He also saw that another driver
was coming up quickly and not paying
attention, probably because that other
driver was on a cell phone. Rather than
let the kids get hit, the Hummer driver
moved forward into the intersection
and blocked the other car. None of
the kids were hurt, and the Hummer
driver wasn’t seriously injured (except
for a loose tooth). The other driver was
charged with dangerous driving.
The Buzz Stinger: This story would
have a less pleasant ending if the guy
had been driving a Geo Metro.
We’ve all belted out the wrong words to popular songs. If you haven’t, you just don’t know it yet.
Often, knowing the title would help a lot. For example, as a kid, I would get down with my bad self and
