Warm Up To Hampton, Virginia Events This Summer! Hampton, Virginia- This summer, warm up to Hampton events! Whether it’s plundering and pillaging at the 13th annual Blackbeard Pirate Festival, listening to great live music at the 22nd annual Afrikan American Festival, or closing out the season at the 30th annual Hampton Bay Days, there is something for the entire family this summer in Hampton. Beginning April 20, the Downtown Hampton & Coliseum Central BID Bus (a free shuttle service connecting Hampton visitors and residents between the two districts) will return for another year of visitor convenience. The bus will have two stops in downtown Hampton (Crowne Plaza Hampton Marin Hotel and Walgreens) and two stops in Coliseum Central (Embassy Suites and Barnes & Noble). The 27-passenger bus will run -More- Warm Up To Hampton, Virginia Events This Summer!- Page 2 on an approximate 30-minute loop. The shuttle begins April 20 and runs every Friday (4 p.m. to midnight) and Saturday (noon to midnight) until October 27. Saturday, April 21, marks the return of International Children’s Festival. Showcasing over 35 countries, ICF allows the unique opportunity for children of all ages to experience the sights, sounds, and tastes of cultures from across the globe. Many notable activities are planned for this year’s program, including a costumed Parade of Nations. Also returning on April 21 is the Saturday Summer Street Fest, complete with musical entertainment, cold refreshments, and family fun. Street Fest is scheduled Saturday evenings, April 21-September 1 on Queens Way. In May, the Hampton Roads Convention Center plays host to several gymnastics competitions, including the Virginia Level 4 State Championships May 4-6, 2012 Women’s Junior Olympic National Championships May 9-11, 2012 Women’s National Invitational Tournament May 11-13, and the Virginia All Star Optional Program State Championship May 18-20. The events are expected to draw participants and attendees from across the country. Beginning May 25, the Hampton Roads Convention Center welcomes back over 1,500 canine friends to the Virginia Memorial Day Cluster All-Breed Dog Show. Hosted by Langley and Gloucester Kennel Clubs, the event is expected to draw over 4,000 spectators. Highlights include four days worth of obedience trials, a Junior Showmanship clinic, AKC Rally®, and over 30 vendors offering pet merchandise unique to the Hampton Roads region. June 1-3, Hampton plays host to the 13th annual Blackbeard Pirate Festival, a weekend full of swashbuckling excitement on the downtown Hampton waterfront. Hampton’s shoreline is a great place to view the OpSail 2012 Virginia™ activities taking place throughout Hampton Roads in early June. The OpSail 2012 Virginia™ Sea and Air Parade, taking place on June 6, will showcase a parade of International Navy Vessels known as grey hulls while the OpSail 2012 Virginia™ Parade of Sail on June 8 will highlight International Tall Ships. Watch the warships and tall ships depart on June 12 as they pass through the channel into the Chesapeake Bay and begin their journey from Hampton Roads during OpSail 2012 Virginia™ Parade of Sail Up the Chesapeake. The weekend of June 22-24, two of Hampton’s most celebrated occurrences return, the 22nd annual Afrikan American Festival and 45th annual Hampton Jazz Festival. At the Afrikan American Festival enjoy an outdoor, non-alcoholic, family-oriented event that includes nonstop entertainment, food, and over 70 vendors. During the Hampton Jazz Festival groove to the sounds of the nation’s top blues, soul, pop, and jazz performers at the Hampton Coliseum. This August 11-12, the 87th annual Hampton Cup Regatta speeds back into town. Join us as Hampton welcomes 10 classes of the fastest hydroplanes in North America. The fun begins on Friday with Bash at the Bridge and racing takes place on Saturday and Sunday. Other festivities include food and beverage vendors, souvenir programs, children’s area, and racing-enthusiast clothing and collectibles for sale. Lawn chairs are highly encouraged as bleacher seating is extremely limited. Close out summer and usher in fall at the 30th annual Hampton Bay Days, September 79. In 1982, Hampton Bay Days was created as a unique outlet to educate the public on the importance of the Chesapeake Bay in the Hampton Roads region, as well as the rest of Virginia and Maryland. The goal of the festival is to provide an entertaining atmosphere while ultimately serving the greater purpose of highlighting aspects of the bay and promoting its upkeep and preservation. About 200,000 people are expected to attend the 30th anniversary celebration in downtown Hampton. Activities include live musical entertainment, over 100 merchandise and craft vendors, a 30-minute fireworks display, bay education area, and more. Other notable summer happenings include the Memorial Day Beach Volleyball Festival and Fifth Annual 3D Sand Soccer Shootout at Buckroe Beach; Hampton Parks and Recreation activities like Groovin’ by the Bay, Pomoco Family Movie Series, and Wynne Ford/Volvo Storytelling in the Park; AAA Basketball Championships at the Boo Williams Sportsplex throughout July, NASCAR racing at Langley Speedway, and Coastal Plain League baseball with the Peninsula Pilots at War Memorial Stadium, among others.
