It was announced that Chipper Jones will be honored at the Gameboree on Saturday, January 26, 2013. Our major league road trip next year will be to Chicago on the weekend of July 19. The 2013 Club officers were elected and twelve board members confirmed. This year’s Election Luncheon speaker was Dr. Mil Fisher, baseball historian and longtime member of the Braves 400 Fan Club. He offered an entertaining view of Ty Cobb that he gained through his friendship with Jimmy Lanier, Cobb’s batboy and personal friend. Dr. Fisher talked about Cobb’s work ethic and competitive spirit, which served him well both on the field and later in the business world. Cobb stole 892 bases, including 55 steals of home, but according to Jimmy, he never sharpened his spikes. Dr. Fisher recommended visiting the Ty Cobb Museum in Royston, GA. 2013 Fan Club Officers Bob Messner, President Damion Carpenter, First Vice-President Bill Toothman, Second Vice-President Dave Badertscher, Secretary Lynn Walley, Treasurer 2013 Board Members Jean Berken Arlene Langer Mary Lou Brooks Carol Brock Magill Lynn Camp Tom Millin Russ Clarke Kirk Phumphry Andre Cleveland Cindy Tate Erma Killings Jim Wilson 2013 Presidential Advisory Council Wayne Coleman Bernie Marino Judy Messer Gary Novak John Padgett Johnny Tallant Rick Wheeler Left to right: Wayne Coleman, Rick Wheeler, Bob Messner, Russ Clarke, Mary Lou Brooks, Damion Carpenter, Dave Badertscher, Lynn Walley, Lynn Camp, Carol Brock Magill, Tom Millin, Erma Killings Thanks to our outgoing Officers and Directors finishing their terms this year: Secretary: Shirley Suttle Directors: Donnie Ellenberg, Willie Hinton, Lynda Houser, Frank Pickens, Rich Vitaris We appreciate your years of service and dedication to the Braves 400 Fan Club! By Rick Wheeler Have you ever thought about wanting to make a difference for the 400 Fan Club? Then give some thought to volunteering to serve on the Board of Directors. We have twelve directors plus officers who plan the overall direction of the club in addition to working on all of our great activities. We are always on the lookout for new and fresh ideas. If you think you might be interested, talk to one of the current directors or officers or past presidents at the Gameboree on January 26. These folks will all be wearing identifying name tags. Have a beverage, visit, and learn more about us. Then once you have enjoyed this year and the next election cycle comes around, you just might get a call to see if your interest is still there. The Editor’s Scorecard By Dave Badertscher In the last issue of The Tomahawk Times we talked about activities for die-hard Braves fans during the offseason. The 400 Fan Club’s annual Election Luncheon took place on November 10 at the Marriott Perimeter Center. We are very excited to announce that Chipper Jones will be honored at the 47th Annual Gameboree on January 26, 2013. Club members will be working tirelessly between now and then to make this gala event a huge success. As November drew to a close, individual tickets for Spring Training games went on sale. The Braves first game at Champion Stadium is on February 22nd. Things are indeed looking up! Braves fans have opportunities to get involved in other arenas. Last month I joined two other 400 Fan Club members, Wayne Coleman and Willie Hinton, as volunteer scorers at the Phil Niekro Golf Classic at Chateau Elan. This annual tournament raises funds for the Edmondson-Telford Center for Children, which cares for abused or neglected children in Hall and Dawson Counties. Beautiful day, great cause! Later in November Nancy and I, along with many other Braves fans, were donors in the Braves Hurricane Sandy Relief Blood Drive. The turnout was impressive and the Red Cross staff appreciative. It was time well spent. The Tomahawk Times December 2012 Issue Page 5 Looking For New Braves 400 Fan Club Members!
