Careers of Sociology Majors
Caree rs of Sociol ogy M ajor s Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, concerned citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has. ~ Margaret Mead What d Major o Sociology s gradu do after ation? ? ? ? ? This is a question that majors and prospective majors frequently ask. There are pamphlets from the American Sociological Association which describe typical careers available to those who major in sociology which we can provide for you. This booklet identifies some of the occupations of UD alums from our department. A degree in sociology provides a strong liberal arts education. It provides valuable preparation for a broad variety of careers. This listing gives a flavor for how diverse these careers are! To be a professional sociologist, anthropologist, or social worker requires graduate training. Many of our majors choose this path. We take pride in the fact that former students have been accepted at the very best graduate, law and medical programs in the country. These schools include: Brown University, University of California at Berkeley, University of Chicago, Columbia University, Harvard University, University of Illinois, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Ohio State University, and University of Wisconsin. While majors find study of the social sciences fascinating and good preparation for many of life’s challenges, most decide not to pursue graduate education. What then do they do? Surveys of past graduates find that they do almost anything you can imagine. Some have entered religious life, decided on careers as writers or artists, or chosen a career in government or the military. The largest share, however, work in a range of jobs within one of five general areas: Business, Criminal Justice and Law, Education, Health Care, and Social Services and Government. Read more about majors who have chosen jobs in these areas in the following pages.
