John E. Hood, age 61,
passed away February 22,
2013.
John was born at Offutt
Air Force Base in Bellevue,
Neb., on August 23, 1951, to
Charles and Uldine Kimball
Hood and graduated from
Abraham
Lincoln
High
School in 1969. He was
united in marriage to Debra
Coleman on July 27, 1979.
John worked in the shipping and receiving department
at Telmar Network. John was
an avid hunter, fisherman,
golfer.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; and sister,
Judi.
John leaves to mourn his
wife, Debra Hood; brother,
Darwin Hood, all of Council
Bluffs; many loving nieces,
nephews, great nieces and
great nephews.
Visitation for John will be
Saturday, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.,
followed by a celebration of
John’s life at 3 p.m., all at
Cutler-O’Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel. Reception and fellowship will
follow at the Walnut Hill Reception Center, 1350 East

Dunlavy
Arthur L. Dunlavy,
age 89, of Council Bluffs,
passed away February 26,
2013, at Jennie Edmundson
Hospital.
Arthur was born June 29,
1923, in Raymond, S.D., to
the late Roy and Iantha E.
(Harbour) Dunlavy. He graduated Abraham Lincoln High
School in 1941 and proudly
served his country in the U.S.
Army during WWII. Arthur
married Virginia Johnson on
June 21, 1944, in Council
Bluffs. They were blessed
with four daughters. Arthur
worked for the Daily Nonpareil for 46 ½ years, retiring in
1988, as foreman in the
Mailroom. After his retirement,
Arthur
continued
working part-time at the
Nonpareil, retiring fully in
1993. Arthur was a member
of New Horizon Presbyterian
Church, where he served as a
deacon for many years;
past-member of the American
Legion; member of AARP and
was noble grand at the Odd
Fellows.
In addition to his parents,
Arthur was preceded in death
by his wife, Virginia in 2001;
and son-in-law, Kenneth
Jessen in 2004.
Arthur is survived by his
daughters, Susan (Byron)
Mass, of Silver City, Iowa,
Kathleen Jessen, Roberta
(Dan) Engle, Deborah (Ray)
Johnston, all of Council
Bluffs; 7 grandchildren, 3
great grandchildren; sisters,
Lucille Dunlavy, Jean Ridgway, Isabel Regan, all of
Council Bluffs; many nieces
and nephews.

Horizon
Presbyterian
Church. Funeral service,
Monday, 11 a.m., at the
church with Reverend Paul
Masters officiating. Interment Cedar Lawn Cemetery
with military rites tendered

Lorraine J. Skow, age 70,
of Council Bluffs, passed
away February 23, 2013.
She was born July 13,
1942, in Cherokee, Iowa, to
the late Lawrence and Jeannette (Borrink) Cave.
She was a longtime administrative assistant in the department of student health at
the University of Nebraska
Medical Center.
Lorraine is survived by
her daughters, Julie Michalski and Jodie Skow;
brother, Loren Cave; 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Memorial service is Sunday, March 3, 2013, at 4 p.m.,
at the First Christian
Church, 6630 Dodge Street in
Omaha.

Jacqueline L. Henry, age
66, of Council Bluffs, Iowa,
passed away February 25,
2013.
She was born July 6, 1946,
in Ute, Iowa, to the late John
and Florence (Kuhlmann)
Hildebrandt. She retired in
2009 from Healthcare Administration. She was Past President of the Board of Directors of the Bethany Lutheran
Home.
Jacqueline is survived by
her husband, Wayne Henry;
children, Todd Henry and
wife, Jeffrie, Ashlee Henry
and fiancé, Janelle Godfrey
and Elise Chu and husband,
Jason; sisters, Bonita Boger
and husband, Floyd and
Faylene Paulson and husband, Ronald; 5 grandchildren, Jack, Autumn, Dawson,
Levi and Gabriel.
Visitation with family will
be 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.,
Saturday with memorial
service at 2 p.m., at the HoyKilnoski Funeral Home. A reception will follow in the community room at Hoy-Kilnoski.

Gerri G. Johnson, age 90,
of Council Bluffs, Iowa,
passed away February 27,
2013, at Bethany Lutheran
Home.
Gerri was born May 30,
1922, in Nunn, Colo., to the
late Earl A. and Ora (Hicks)
Law. She moved to Council
Bluffs in 1927 and graduated
Thomas
Jefferson
High
School in 1940.
Gerri married Robert L.
Johnson and to this union
three sons were born. She
was a homemaker and a
member of the Methodist
faith and The Center.
In addition to her parents,
Gerri was preceded in death
by her husband, Robert L.
Johnson in 1967; sons, Dick
Johnson in 1977 and Randy
Johnson in 1998.
She is survived by her son,
Robert A. “Bob” Johnson, of
Council Bluffs; five grandsons, Mark, Mike, Brian,
Brad and RJ Johnson; two
great grandchildren, Tyler
and Addison Johnson; sister,
Mary Walker; brother, Harold
‘Buddy”
Law;
and
half-sister, Evelyn Murphy.

Richard H. Cody
Richard H. Cody,
age 87, of Council Bluffs,
Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, February 26, 2013, at
Risen Son Christian Village.
He was born on November
19, 1925, in Mills County,
Iowa, to the late James and
Erma (Dreyer) Cody. He married Doris Teager on May 30,
1945.
He worked as a farmer
and later was a Data Systems
Technician for the US Postal
Service, retiring in 1986. He
served his country in the US
Coast Guard during World
War II. He belonged to
NARFE- National Association
of Retired Federal Employees.
He was preceded in death
by his wife, Doris in 2010;
son, Richard Cody in 2012;
and sister, Ruth Wing.
He is survived by daughter, Linda Cody, of Council
Bluffs;
daughter-in-law,
Sharon Cody, of Linwood,
Neb.; 2 grandchildren, Susan
Cody, of Linwood, Jim and
Melissa Cody, of North Bend,
Neb.; great grandson, Bryce
Cody,
of
North
Bend;
sister-in-law, Ruth Camp, of
Phelan, Calif.; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
No visitation and no services. Body has been cremated. Memorials to Risen

Walter F. Reicks
Walter
F.
Reicks, 79, formerly of Petersburg, Neb., passed away
Tuesday, February 26, 2013,
at his home in Council Bluffs,
Iowa, where he lived with his
wife of 56 years Patricia.
Walter was born on November 30, 1936, to Ben and
Hilda (Bierman) Reicks. Walter served two years in the
Army in France as an electrician. Walter married Patricia Ellis on February 23,
1957, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Omaha, Neb.
They farmed for two years
in Petersburg before moving
to the Omaha area.
Walter was preceded in
death by his brothers, Bernard and Alfred; sisters, Germaine and Bernice, all of Petersburg.
Besides his wife, Patricia
he is survived by his brother,
Linus (Butch) and his wife,
Candice, of Broomfield, Colo.;
sister, Monica and husband,
Dale, of Perham, Minn. He is
also survived by numerous
nieces and nephews who
knew him as Unc, including
Michael who he treated like a
son.
Walter was a proud man
who worked hard for everything he earned. He retired as a
respected journeyman and
supervisor in the flat roof
trade.
Visitation will be Friday,
from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a
Rosary at 7 p.m., at MaherLivingston Funeral Home.
Service will be Saturday, at
10 a.m., also at the funeral
home. Interment will be in
Memorial Park Cemetery
with military honors by
American Legion Rainbow

– Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf,
the no-nonsense Desert Storm
commander famously nicknamed “Stormin’ Norman,”
graduated
from
the
U.S. Military
Academy at
West Point,
soaking
up its values: “Duty,
Honor,
Country.”
Schwarzkopf
He married here. He
taught here. And on Thursday
he was buried here.
His family and friends
joined Kuwaiti officials, former Secretary of State Colin
Powell, former Vice President
Dick Cheney, gray clad cadets
and a detail of New Jersey
state troopers for a memorial service in the academy’s
gothic chapel Thursday afternoon. His remains were buried afterward at the cemetery
on the grounds of the storied
military institution.
“Norman Schwarzkopf,
Class of ‘56, has come home,”
Powell said during the service.
Schwarzkopf commanded
the U.S.-led international
coalition that drove Saddam
Hussein’s forces out of Kuwait
in 1991 when Powell was

– became popular in the leadup to Operation Desert Storm,
the six-week aerial campaign
that climaxed with a massive
ground offensive Feb. 24-28,
1991. Iraqis were routed from
Kuwait in 100 hours before
U.S. officials called a halt.
“When anyone thinks of

Stormin’ Norman, The Bear;
... he was a larger than life
figure,” Powell said.
Schwarzkopf spent his
retirement years in Tampa.
While he campaigned for
President George W. Bush
in 2000, Schwarzkopf maintained a low profile in the
public debate over the second
Gulf War against Iraq.
Schwarzkopf was buried near his father, Col. H.
Norman Schwarzkopf, the
founder and commander of
the New Jersey State Police.
The academy cemetery also
holds the remains of such
notable military figures as
Gen. William Westmoreland,
Lt. Col. George Custer and
1st Lt. Laura Walker, who
became the first female graduate killed in action when she
died in 2005 in Afghanistan.
Schwarzkopf and his wife,
Brenda, had three children:
Cynthia, Jessica and Christian.

when he died of complications
from pneumonia on Dec. 27 in
Tampa.
Though lauded as one
of the brighter lights of the
“Long Gray Line,” of West
Point cadets and graduates,
his daughter recalled him as
a loving family man equally
at home in palaces and camping tents. While Americans
knew him as the no-nonsense
man in the desert camouflage,
his children remember him
dressing as a clown and doing
magic tricks for children’s parties, Cindy Schwarzkopf said,
her voice choked with emotion.
Schwarzkopf graduated
from West Point in 1956 and
later served two tours in Vietnam, first as an adviser to
South Vietnamese paratroops
and later as a battalion commander in the U.S. Army’s
Americal Division. While
many disillusioned career officers left the military after the
war, Schwarzkopf stayed to
helped usher in institutional
reforms. He was named commander in chief of U.S. Central Command at Tampa’s
MacDill Air Force Base in
1988.
