Durant’s annual Magnolia Festival is May 30-June 2 at Choctaw Event Center

Guymon siblings hope they can rely
on faithful, nostalgic crowds at Rialto

ven 37 years ago, downtown
movie theaters were a dying
breed. But they were still a place
where a family could enjoy a
night of entertainment or parents felt
safe leaving their
children for a few
hours of thrills
and laughs. The
Rialto on Denison’s
Main Street was
one of those places,
although it has had
several resurrections
throughout the
decades since it

town more than 90 years ago.
In 1975, the downtown theater already
had faced a decade of competition from
the multiplex at the malls, joining the
drive-in movie screens still going strong
after a few decades. Still the Rialto held
on, continuing to show movies until
1987 when the doors were closed.
Greg, Garrett and Kim Guymon
remember the Rialto as a highlight of
growing up in Denison, and are bringing
back those memories while making new
ones. (Sister Kim lives in Washington,
D.C., but is also a partner in the venture.)
The theater hosts regular movies, of
course, and blockbusters they are, but
from a different era. Greg, the older of
the brothers and the de facto spokesman,
told us he remembers watching “Jaws”
as a 5-year-old boy and wondering if
he’d ever “go back in the water again.” Several months later live performers
took the place of the films. The Rialto
had been resurrected as a music
theater by local entertainer Shawnda
Rains. Her Main Street Showcase
entertained crowds for more than
10 years with Saturday night shows
that were frequently sold out. But as
Rains went on to steady work outside
entertainment, maintenance on the
building became expensive and fell
behind, and the doors were shut again.
It took three years for the nostalgia bug
to bite the Guymons.
The glory years obviously were far
behind the building. Greg and Garrett
got to work. First knocking down
walls, hauling out what couldn’t be
salvaged, and, finally, with the help of
a community-effort back in January,
cleaning it all up. After several months
of hard work, seeking out equipment
such as classic-style popcorn poppers, a
vintage stage curtain and hundreds of
other little things that make a theater,
it finally happened. Movies were once
again showing at the Rialto, even as
the smell of fresh paint mingled with
the sweeter smells of authentic buttery
movie popcorn.
The first show was date night for
many of the brothers’ contemporaries
as they showed the Patrick Swayze cultfavorite “Dirty Dancing” on Valentine’s
Day (and no, nobody put Baby in
the corner). That Valentine weekend
also had live music. Shawnda Rains
returned with the latest edition of her
Showcase band, joining Greg’s Little
Big Iron band on the new stage.
A mix of music shows and movies
continue to fill the marquee at the
Rialto, even as the venerable old theater
leads the way for a new downtown
Denison revival.
The Guymons don’t much limit what
the Rialto hosts. We’ve mentioned movies
and live shows. There’s also dinner
theater, “dinner and a movie,” catered
by local restaurants. And the venue is
available to rent for special events.
On the screen to start the month are
1983’s “Return of the Jedi” June 2 and
concert film “Elvis: That’s the Way
It Is” June 4, both starting at 7 p.m.

‘m not much for mathematics,
but Thompson Square might
have a formula for multiplying
the successes of last year. The
common denominator here involves
anything but a fraction, combining
harmonious husband and wife Keifer
and Shawna Thompson.
The duo’s breakout smash was “Are
You Gonna Kiss Me or Not,” and you
would’ve had to avoid country and
pop radio for all of 2011 to miss it. I
appreciate a story told so the ending
points right back to the beginning. It’s
sort of a life-circle tracing in love, like
I recall in George Straight’s “Check
Yes or No” and Collin Raye’s “If
You Get There Before I Do.” I only

wish somebody would’ve included a
question mark in the song title.
Keifer and Shawna took some time
to chat with Bob and Scott of “The
KLBC Morning Buzz” before a May
25 show at Choctaw Casino Resort’s
Centerstage. It sounded as if they might
feel right at home around here.
Shawna grew up in Alabama. Keifer
was born and raised in Oklahoma,
but dang near Kansas and Missouri,
in Miami. Scott pointed out that many
people mispronounce the name of
the Sooner State city, likening it to
the Florida one, and it probably was
refreshing for him to talk to somebody
who knows the difference. Keifer agreed.
According to Wikipedia: The city is
named after the Miami tribe, which
prefers the vernacular pronunciation of
“My-am-uh.”
So how did these two songbirds meet?
“To make a really long story short,
we moved to Nashville in ‘96 from
our respective home states. There are
always singing contests around town.
That first week that we were there,
we both just ended up at one of these
contests. That’s where we met, and the
rest is history. We haven’t been apart
probably 10 days in 16 years.”
While they claimed each other’s
hearts, Keifer said some other
contestant won that contest performing
an Air Supply song. That was the artist
catalog to select from to ensure victory,
according to Keifer’s observations.
Scott asked how the two of them took
on the Thompson Square moniker.
“It was a team effort,” Keifer said.
“One of the hardest things to do is
name your band. We were Thompson
Squared for a while, but nobody ever
heard the ‘D’ (at the end).”
Yeah, I bet one thing that’s more
difficult than naming your group is
having everyone misunderstand that
decision you so diligently made. Even
if it came to sound more like a reference
to a town’s center, Thompson Square
has started getting down the road at a
pretty good pace.
“Let’s Fight” was the first single
— kind of a rocking, fun tune with
Shawna’s twangy vocal sounding a lot
like Kellie Pickler to my ears. That one
got close to the top 50. Then, “Are You
Gonna Kiss Me or Not” landed smackdab at the top of the country chart.
It also puckered at No. 32 among all
genres and was ranked 27th for all 2011
on Billboard’s year-end country chart.
Sales are near 2 million.
“The first time we heard it, Shawna
and I both were like, ‘That sounds
like a hit to me,’” Keifer said. “We
obviously never thought it would do
what it did. It completely changed our
lives for the better.”
The Thompsons were surprised
with the presentation of the Academy
of Country Music Vocal Duo of the
Year Award after finishing a pair of
songs May 31 at the ACM Salute to the
Military concert.
“They blind-sided us with it, but it
was a good blind-side,” said Shawna,
who’d lost her dad a month before and
dedicated the win to him.
Thompson Square upset two-time
winner Sugarland for the honor and
was fresh off being named Music
Row Magazine’s Country Music’s
Breakthrough Artist of 2011.

Jenkins on the third single, “I Got You.”
Grammar aside, that’s a nice song and
charted at No. 8.
“That was a fun follow-up to ‘Kiss Me
or Not,’” Keifer said. “We love playing
that song live. It’s so much fun, there’s
so much energy behind it, and the video
was a blast to shoot.”
“Glass” was released in January
and has been making its way up the
country singles chart, climbing to No.
25 at last check.
“It’s just a little different side of
Thompson Square, a more serious
side,” Shawna said of the track penned
by Ross Copperman and Jon Nite. “The
first time we heard it, we thought it was
a really pretty song. Obviously, being
two male writers, it was a male demo.
We thought it might be cool if it had a
female voice on it, just because the lyric
is so fragile and sweet. So Keifer gave
me a shot at singin’ one.”
She laughed, and so did our radio guys.
Thompson Square isn’t boosted by
aone of the giant recording houses. The
duo signed with small Stoney Creek
Records, a sister to Broken Bow Records,
which is home to Jason Aldean.
“What’s really cool about it right
now, what’s going on with the music
business is that small, independent
labels are just gettin’ it done,” Keifer
said. “And your radio is just givin’
small labels a chance. I think it’s really
important, because for so long, it was
just the big boys and that was it. And
there’s more music out there than that.
It’s a really exciting time.
“We knew we wanted to be on a
small label when we started, because
the wheels turn faster when you need
something done. We were fortunate
enough to land there, and it’s a really
great bunch of people.”
Thompson Square also will join a big
congregation of the genre standouts at
the first Watershed festival Aug. 3-5 east
of Seattle. The music/camping event
will be headlined by Blake Shelton,
Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley.

yet, I recommend giving it a listen. The
official video and others featuring the
lyrics can be seen online.

W
hen I think about respectable artists in the music
industry, on the country
side, Clint Black certainly is
one who comes to mind. He’s also coming to Texoma, pretty much promising a
quality concert is to be staged June 7 in
Choctaw Casino Resort’s Centerstage.
The 50-year-old hit-maker has
written, recorded and released more
than 100 songs. In fact, he didn’t put
out an original song he didn’t have a
hand in writing until 2007’s “The Strong
One.” He specializes in the turn of a
phrase with lyrics like: “Drinkin’ myself
blind, thinking I won’t see” and “If I
could only put myself in your shoes, I’d
walk right back to me.”
Clint has recorded multiple songs
that share his own emotions through
the years. But in the early days, he told

his hometown Houston Chronicle that he
appreciated country music because it’s
straightforward and melodic, and the
simple poetry in ballads could match
anything Barbra Streisand had done. He
also explained his approach with a pen.
“To me, a song is more than just
something to sing. It’s something to
learn from. It’s somebody else’s true
feeling. I’m always trying to get at the
meaning. ... When I write a line, I’m
doing the same thing. I’m looking at
it from the perspective of: ‘If I was
driving down the road listening to it,
what am I gonna get out of it?’”
So, of course Clint can sing and has a
way with words. Plus, he plays guitar,
harmonica and drums. He’s also done
some acting and has a star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame.
His film debut was a small role in
“Maverick” (probably Sarah Palin’s
favorite). The big-name cast included
Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster and James
Garner, a Norman, Okla., native who
starred in the 1950s western-comedy
series that was the basis of the movie.
Clint’s character was a poker player
in the big riverboat tournament who’s
thrown overboard for cheating. It was
kinda like his song on the soundtrack
— “A Good Run of Bad Luck.”
But talk about being “in the black,”
1989 was an awesome year for Clint
with the release of his debut album. He
was 27, and if he really was just killin’
time, that’s the way to do it. “Killin’
Time” has been certified triple platinum
(3 million sold), and he likely needed an
entire bookshelf to hold all the awards
it earned him. CMT included the album
on its list of the 100 Greatest Albums in
Country Music (and Clint on its artist
rankings). Four of the songs were charttoppers and one barely missed. And
when Billboard did tallies for the entire
year, No. 1 and No. 2 belonged to Clint
— “A Better Man” and “Killin’ Time.”
A decade after his big breakthrough,
Clint reached a proverbial fork in the
road. He wanted to reevaluate his career
direction but apply the compass to his
personal life. Clint had met actress Lisa
Hartman backstage at a New Year’s Eve
show as the calendar was turning to
1991, and they were married 10 months
later in Katy, Texas. Lisa, who turns 56
June 1, starred on “Knots Landing” as
rock singer Ciji Dunne in 1982-83. When
show-runners killed off her character,
fans were so outraged, they had to
create another role to bring her back.
She has lots of TV-movie credits, and the
daughter of a Houston-based singer has
released some albums of her own.
In 1999, Clint and Lisa released a
duet Clint wrote, “When I Said I Do.” (I
watched the video he directed featuring
them both again, and it makes me smile
even more now that those vows were
20 years ago.) Not long after that, they
decided to have a baby. Lisa was almost
45 then, and it wasn’t easy. But Lily
Pearl was born in May 2001. Clint took
a few years off for family time.
“It ended up not being a smart career
move, but it was a real smart dad move,”
he said in a 2009 PBS interview. “I
wouldn’t go back and try to do anything
for my career in exchange for that.”
With seven studio albums (and
several greatest-hits compilations)
carrying the RCA label, Clint founded
Equity Music Group. “Spend My Time”
was Clint’s first album on his own label,
and it included another duet with Lisa,
“You Still Get to Me.”
Just before its release, Clint was
quoted in a Good Housekeeping article:
“That song is a true story. Our attraction
is greater than it ever was, and our
appreciation and value for our marriage
and our family is greater than it ever
was. I wanted the song to ring true,
and to say what I tell Lisa all the time:
‘I love you now more than ever, I’m
attracted to you now more than ever.’
When we get time alone, I’m reminded
of it all again. Because if you’re lucky,
like we are, as the years go on in your
marriage, it just gets better.”
Lisa was there with him and said her
“honey” was making her cry.
However noble his idea of an artistfriendly record company and launching
Little Big Town’s platinum-selling debut,
Equity had to close in December 2008.
Clint and Lisa have another joint
project fresh on shelves, but it’s a
DVD this time. The sequel to 2006’s
“Flicka” that starred Tim McGraw first
brought in Clint as ranch hand Toby in
2010’s “Flicka 2.” He reprised the role
in “Flicka: Country Pride,” hired by a
stable owner who’s played by Lisa. It
became available this May at Wal-Mart
stores and Sam’s Club.
Clint starred in 1998 TV movie “Still
Holding On: The Legend of Cadillac
Jack” and appeared as Dr. Warren in
2000’s “Going Home” (Jason Robards).
He’s showed up in various series too.
His foray into reality TV was “The
Celebrity Apprentice” in 2009. Although
Donald Trump’s competition wasn’t
Clint’s brightest stint, he managed to
place fifth and raise funds for a charity
that’s close to his heart. Niece Cortney,
daughter of brother Kevin, lost her battle
with Rett syndrome in 2003 at age 16.
It’s a unique developmental disorder
almost exclusive to females that causes a
slowing or stagnation in skills (including
motor, cognitive and autonomic), and
most often misdiagnosed as autism and
cerebral palsy. Through “Apprentice,”
Clint became friends with Olympic gold
medalist Scott Hamilton. They teamed
to generate money for the International
Rett Syndrome Foundation’s “Research
to Reality: Funding Progress” campaign.
Those efforts and all I’ve learned about
Clint just seem to show it’s not always
just the bad guys wear black hats.

There’s new information that Loretta Lynn
is 80 years old, not 77, as she’s claimed.
Lynn’s birth certificate, on file at the state
Office of Vital Statistics in Frankfort, Ky.,
shows Loretta Webb was born April 14,
1932, in Johnson County, Ky. That also
means she was almost 16 when she got
married, not 13.

Eric Church responded to the drama
surrounding his comments in Rolling
Stone magazine. He had criticized artists
who get their start from “American Idol,”
“The Voice” and so forth, and artists who
take money to be judges on those shows.
For Miranda Lambert, that hit close to
home. She placed third on “Nashville
Star” in 2003 and her husband, Blake
Shelton, is a coach on “The Voice.”
Plus, she toured with Eric. She’s not
happy with his comments. Eric issued
a clarification and an apology, stating
he has a lot of respect for artists such as
Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and
Miranda. He said he was referring more
to reality shows as a whole.
Chris Young is on tour with Miranda
Lambert. He said he had no idea how
into dogs she is until now. Chris said she
always has at least two of her canines
on the road with her. Those are Delta
and Cher. Every few weeks, she’ll rotate
out another one, according to Chris.
Maybe they will bark “Happy Birthday”
to him June 12, when the “Tomorrow”
singer turns 27. By the way, Chris won
“Nashville Star” in 2006.
Hopefully, Tim McGraw will have better
luck with a new music home. After years
of disagreements with Curb Records,
Tim has signed with Big Machine
Records. The label family is home to
Craig Morgan also dabbles in television.
Besides his “All Access Outdoors” show

mine, so he offered her tickets and meetand-greet passes. Well, it seemed the lady
doesn’t show up. But after the show, she
tried to get backstage. Of course, Craig
gave his permission. He said they had a
nice time and all was fine. As the woman
got ready to leave, she said, “Oh, and by
the way, nice picture.”

Little Big Town got to spend a lot of time
just outside Columbus, Ohio, when the
tour bus broke down. Karen Fairchild,
Kimberly Schlapman, Jimi Westbrook
and Phillip Sweet waited some seven
hours before they were back on the road.
It made them really late for sound check.
They had to rush to get their staging and
equipment set up, since it was all in the
trailer they were towing. They said sitting
for that long on the side of the road is a lot
more hellish now that they have restless
kids who want to run up and down the
aisle of the bus.
Trace Adkins said his secret weapon is
his wife. He said he doesn’t do anything
without consulting her first. Rhonda,

A 13-year-old girl was devastated when
she missed Taylor Swift’s concert in
Sacramento, Calif. Summer and mom
Michelle were on their way to see Taylor
when a drunk driver hit them. Summer
was beat up pretty badly but had a
great attitude about it. The police officer
on the scene was so impressed that he
made it his personal mission to ensure
Summer could see Taylor. The singer’s
management company got wind of
the story and promised her a great seat
next time Taylor plays in the area. Until
then, the teen was sent a whole bunch of
autographed stuff.
Tour buses just aren’t safe places lately.
A blaze broke out on Lee Brice’s bus in
January. In March, Jerrod Niemann’s
bus caught fire and Matt Stillwell’s
was hit by a tornado. Days after Bucky
Covington’s bus crashed without him
aboard, Justin Moore’s was involved in a
fatal accident. Justin and his crew are OK,
but the driver of the other vehicle didn’t
make it. Justin sent thoughts and prayers
to the guy and his family via Twitter.
Reba McEntire’s stepson is ruining
Kelly Clarkson’s creativity. She said
she’s having so much fun with Brandon
Blackstock that it’s becoming hard
to write songs about heartbreak and
breakups. She joked that being happy is
killing her inspiration.
A new album from Gloriana will be
released July 31. “A Thousand Miles Left
Behind” will feature the group’s current
single, “(Kissed You) Good Tonight.” The
song is Gloriana’s fastest rising one so far.
Even though there were some nasty
words between them during the divorce,
LeAnn Rimes insisted all is well in the
world for her and Eddie Cibrian’s ex.
LeAnn said she’s comfortable running
into Brandi Glanville at the kids’ soccer
games and elsewhere around town. If
anything, it’s Eddie who’s having issues.
Brandi wants to include their kids on
“Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” but
Eddie said no.
Trisha Yearwood is in the studio, working
on a new solo album. After that, rumor
has it the long-awaited Trisha and
Garth Brooks duets album might be on
the horizon. Trisha hinted that Garth’s
youngest daughter heads off to college in
two years and that’s when the two of them
will hit the road for a tour. Meanwhile,
the two can be seen performing during
Garth’s Las Vegas concerts. Trisha comes
out toward the end. The only problem: If
she said something witty one night, he’ll
say it before she gets on stage the next
night. She said, “He’s totally ripping off
my stuff.”
Brad Paisley and Jason Aldean have
signed on to a TV talent show. “Opening
Act,” produced by Nigel Lythgoe
(“American Idol,” “So You Think You
Can Dance”). The show scours the
Internet for singers and gives them five
days to prepare to open shows for some
big-name stars. That’s where Brad and
Jason enter the picture. The series will
debut July 9 on the E! Network.
Alan Jackson’s concert for earthquakeravaged Mineral, Va., raised $152,000
to help rebuild the little community. It
all started with a radio contest. Alan
promised to do a free concert in the city
that garnered the most online votes.
Once word got out about the earthquake,
people in all the big cities started voting
for Mineral, population less than 500.
Alan said it turned into a nice thing.
Luke Bryan had a favorite contestant
going into the “American Idol” Season
11 finale. Luke and Phillip Phillips are
from the same town — Leesburg, Ga.
The Phillips family has a pawn shop
there, where the 2010 census recorded
2,896 residents.

Cancer claims three artists • New albums galore

Adam Yauch — the rapper, musician
and video director known as MCA
of The Beastie Boys — died May 4
in his native Brooklyn after a threeyear cancer battle. He was 47. Yauch
had surgery to remove a tumor in his
salivary gland in July 2009, and his
illness delayed release of “Hot Sauce
Committee, Part 1” scheduled for two
months later. It became available in
spring 2011, but a few of the tracks were
switched and it became “Part 2.” The
Beastie Boys were inducted into the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April,
but MCA didn’t attend the ceremony.
Yauch is survived by his wife, Dechen
Wangdu, and their daughter, Tenzin
Losel (born in 1998). A practicing
Buddhist, he also founded a charity
that organized the Tibetan Freedom
Concerts that ran 1996-2001.
Disco queen Donna Summer died
May 17 at age 63 after a bout with lung
cancer, which she kept secret for almost
a year. She was known for hits such as
“Love to Love You, Baby,” “Hot Stuff,”
“Bad Girls” and “Last Dance.”
Robin Gibb, who co-founded The Bee
Gees with brothers Barry and Maurice,
lost his battle with cancer May 20 at
age 62. The falsetto of the trio was
hospitalized in April and fell into a
coma but had regained consciousness.
Maurice, Robin’s twin, died two years
after the last Bee Gee’s album, 2001’s
“This Is Where I Come In.” He had a
twisted intestine, for which Robin had
surgery in 2010 when diagnosed with
colon and liver cancer. Their musical
pinnacle came with the soundtrack for
“Saturday Night Fever” (1977) starring
John Travolta and the sequel’s title
came from one of the songs, “Stayin’
Alive.” We had the latter on laserdisc
when I was a kid and I don’t know how
many times I watched that.
Van Halen postponed the last
approximately 30 dates on this summer’s
reunion tour, but that won’t affect the
sold-out June 20 show at American
Airlines Center in Dallas. Media outlets

were quick to jump to conclusions since
the band has been rather infamous for
feuds in its 40-year history. But current
singer David Lee Roth said they just
needed a little rest. Van Halen’s first
album since 1998, “A Different Kind of
Truth,” dropped in February. The current
lineup includes Roth, brothers Eddie
and Alex Van Halen, and Eddie’s son,
Wolfgang, on bass.
Bobby Brown is putting out his
first solo album in 14 years, “The
Masterpiece,” June 5. Fans starting
hearing two of its songs — “Damaged”
and “Get Out the Way” — in 2011.
He dropped the latest single, “Don’t
Let Me Die,” while doing a slew of
TV appearances in May. The title
sounds ironic as Brown goes around
insisting he wasn’t the one who got
ex-wife Whitney Houston hooked on
drugs, but it reportedly was written
years ago. Brown also announced he’s
going to marry Alicia Etheridge, his
girlfriend of five years and mother of
toddler son Cassius, June 15 while in
Honolulu for a special Father’s Day
concert with New Edition.
Usher’s seventh studio album,
“Looking 4 Myself,” can be found June
12. Leadoff single “Climax” dropped in
February and became his 12th No. 1 on
Billboard’s R&B/Hip Hop Chart. That
was a slow jam. He’s followed it with
club-ready “Scream” in late April.
Justin Bieber made a brief appearance
on the April 17 live elimination episode
of NBC’s “The Voice” to reveal another
clip of his “Boyfriend” video. The 18year-old pop star also assured fans his
“Believe” album will be available June
19. And in early May, he had passed
his test to complete high school. Bieber
said it was hard doing school and
work every day, but he had to earn his
diploma for his mom.
Maroon 5 toured constantly when
debut album “Songs About Jane” was
released a decade ago, but only recently
has it seemed the band is everywhere.

from frontman Adam Levine landing
a TV gig as a coach on “The Voice.”

And knowing his cynicism related to
celebrities and indie mind-set, I’m not
a bit surprised by the new album’s
tongue-in-cheek title. “Overexposed,”
the 10-track offering set to drop June
26, is “one of our most diverse and
poppiest albums yet,” according
to Levine. The guys worked with
several outside songwriters this time,
and the first single, “Payphone,”
is a collaboration with rapper Wiz
Khalifa. Team efforts worked well in
2011, when “Moves Like Jagger” with
Christina Aguilera became a big smash
and Levine lent vocals to Gym Class
Heroes’ “Stereo Hearts.”
Linkin Park’s “Living Things” is
due June 26. The album’s first single,
“Burn It Down,” is already out in the
digital market. The band successfully
fired up fans by using social media and
other Internet pathways for interactive
games, updates and special access to
music and tickets to the Honda Civic
Tour (with Incubus and Mutemath).
June 26 also is the date to get The
Offspring’s first full-length in four years.
“Days Go By” is the ninth studio album
for the punk-pop band I always associate
with 1994’s “Come Out and Play.” (I
selected that one for my high-school
basketball team to run out to before a few
games). Readers who remember cracking
up at satirical lyrics in “Pretty Fly (for a
White Guy” from the 1998 “Americana”
album might recognize the mocking
references to modern music in “Cruising
California (Bumpin’ in My Trunk).”
Offspring threw in a bit of Auto-Tune,
for example, and a chorus that seemingly
alludes to the Black Eyed Peas’ Fergie
and Nicki Minaj. The other new single
released in late April is the title track
and carries a more serious tone. Lyrics:
“All your anger, all your hurt/it doesn’t
matter in the end./Those days go by/and
we all start again./What you had and
what you lost/they’re all memories in
the wind.” The last three tracks also are
some interesting titles: “I Wanna Secret
Family (With You),” “Dividing by Zero”
and “Slim Pickens Does the Right Thing
and Rides the Bomb to Hell.”
Summer Olympics organizers in
London apparently approached the
Sex Pistols about performing in some
capacity at the games but wanted to
control the content. The punk band
declined. Frontman John Lydon, aka
Johnny Rotten, told Billboard.com: “If
you’re going to be celebrating what
is great about Britain, the honesty of
the Sex Pistols is one of those things.
If you censor the words of any one
song, you’re killing the honesty and
I couldn’t tolerate that. ... I think the
world has become more conservative
now than it was back” when the group
formed during the mid-70s. All the
things we fought so hard against are
slowly creeping back in. If you’re going
to put a negative on a word, then you’re
denying the human race the very thing
we’re most proud of. Our greatest
sense of achievement as a species is our
language. Through language, we can
communicate abstract thoughts. So you
cannot limit anyone’s vocabulary.”
Meanwhile, Duracell (yeah, the
company that makes batteries)
contacted O.A.R. about writing a
song for the Summer Olympics. The
band (its name an acronym for Of
A Revolution) actually had started
working on “Champions” a year
earlier and revisited it when members
realized its message would suit the
campaign to support Americans in the
games. O.A.R. extended the teamwork
by inviting another “abbreviated” act,
rapper B.o.B., to contribute rhymes
to the track. Duracell started offering
the record as free download on its
Facebook page.
Tupac Shakur’s April 15 appearance
at the annual Coachella Festival via
hologram launched a quantum leap
in his record sales. The rapper/actor
has been dead almost 16 years but
managed to return his “Greatest Hits”
album to the Billboard 200 chart and
“Hail Mary” — a song his virtual self
performed — hit 13,000 downloads.
Other albums and singles also saw
big boosts. One of his tangible duet
partners, Snoop Dogg, on the chart
that measures online popularity. The
stunt also stirred lots of talk about
resurrecting deceased artists in such
a manner, with Michael Jackson’s
family reportedly considering it and
Freddie Mercury’s Queen bandmates
quickly nixing the concept of playing
alongside a fake version of their dear
friend. However, Queen guitarist Brian
May later told the BBC they’ve been
working for a while on “an optical
illusion of sorts” to get Mercury on
stage again. But what they’ve come
up with will be seen at the 10th
anniversary of West End musical “We
Will Rock You.” Vocals for the band’s
few summer shows will be provided
by Adam Lambert.
The hologram route could be an
option for TLC, since the middle
initial stands for the rhyming voice of
Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, lost in an auto
accident a decade ago. I imagine it
would look eerily similar to segments
in the trio’s “Waterfalls” video.
However, Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins
and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas are
planning to use just archival footage
projected onto a big screen (as was
done at a 2003 show) when they hit the
road for a reunion tour later this year.
And according to Chilli, they’ll put
out new music after the VH1 movie
about the group airs. T-Boz and Chilli
signed on as consultants and executive
producers of the biopic. Not sure when
it will be on, but I don’t wanna miss
it. All three women, who bickered
like sisters, generated their share of
controversy. Also, T-Boz has battled
sickle-cell anemia since childhood,
which complicated her three-year bout
(2006-09) with a brain tumor.

In blast-from-the-past news, female
R&B group SWV presents its first
studio offering in almost 15 years. The
“sisters with voices” were welcomed
back to the top five of their genre’s
album chart with “I Missed Us.” Lead
single “Co-Sign” broke the top 50.
Personally, it doesn’t have the same
appeal as 1993 singles “I’m So Into
You” and “Weak,” but fans who’ve

while I’m reminiscing, it’d be nice if the
original En Vogue quartet could reunite
long enough for some fresh stuff.
Jack White’s solo effort notched his first
No. 1 album after more than a decade
of work as a band member (The White
Stripes, The Raconteurs, The Dead
Weather). Some promotional photos for
“Blunderbuss” had me thinking White
looks a whole lot like Johnny Depp as
Edward Scissorhands and Barnabas
Collins in “Dark Shadows.” Shortly
after that observation, I read that Walt
Disney Pictures had tapped White
NBC’s “Smash” centers on the making
of a musical about Marilyn Monroe.
On the real Broadway is a new play
portraying another late icon, Judy
Garland, widely endeared as Dorothy
in “Wizard of Oz.” Daughter Liza
Minnelli doesn’t think too highly of
“End of the Rainbow,” which one
reviewer described as a “tabloid view of
Garland’s final descent into despair and
self-destruction.” She’s not seen it, but
Minnelli told Billboard: “It amazes me
that they can do anything they want and
say anything they want that’s not true.
It upsets all of us, but not to the point
where you get really upset. It’s more like,
‘Oh please!’” She said people remain
fascinated with her mother because
she was “wonderful.” The 66-year-old
singer/actress also gave credit for a
revived interest in old cinema to Turner
Classic Movies, where she recently saw
“Bells are Ringing,” directed by her
father, Vincente Minnelli.

The singer/songwriter has crafted
much musical artistry from heartbreak,
beginning with 1995’s “Jagged Little
Pill.” But she became a wife in May
2010 and a mother the following
Christmas, and she has reminded me
with “Guardian” she’s pretty good at
upbeat too. Some lyrics: “I’ll be your
keeper for life as your guardian. I’ll be
your warrior of care, your first warden.
I’ll be your angel on call, I’ll be on
demand. The greatest honor of all, as
your guardian.” Similar to “Head Over
Feet” in tempo, a keyboard prominently
accompanies verses and the song gets
more edge as a rock-guitar chorus
complements her signature vocal.
She’s performed it on TV a few times
(“Dancing with the Stars,” “The Ellen
DeGeneres Show”), and it’s available
via iTunes. However, we can’t get the
album, “Havoc and Bright Lights,”
It looks like a movie about Jimi Hendrix
finally will happen and Outkast rapper
André 3000 has been cast as the iconic
guitarist. According to Irish Film &
Television Network, “All Is By My
Side” will focus on Hendrix’s 1966-67
stint in England recording “Are You
Experienced?” André 3000 (born André
Benjamin) has done some film acting
— supporting roles in “Be Cool,” “Four
Brothers” and “Semi-Pro,” plus 2006
movie/album project “Idlewild” with
Outkast co-creator Big Boi. Writing
credit is given to John Ridley, also
making his directorial debut. Ridley
was responsible for the ridiculous
“Undercover Brother” in 2002 but also
this year’s “Red Tails” about Tuskegee
airmen. Six weeks of filming should be
completed around mid-July.
to compose the score for “The Lone
Ranger” adaptation — starring Depp as
Tonto. White has contributed to movie
soundtracks before — such as five
songs for the “Cold Mountain” and the
“Quantum of Solace” theme song with
Alicia Keys — but this will be his first
time to do the whole thing. We’ll have
to wait another year to hear how he

Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945)
wrote that God should not be
kept on the boundaries or smuggled into
some secret place, rather He must be in
the middle of things.

wasn’t “out there”
or “at the edges”
or only “in the
gaps,” to use some
phrases from the
recent “God is
dead” polemic.
God’s place is in
the middle of the
village, not on the
fridge.

Tidwell
conducted throughout the past 60plus years showed an average of
approximately 96 percent of Americans
said they believed in God. But Gallup
did not bother to ask respondents
where their God is located in their
lives or how centric God is in their
remarkable belief. The fact that
Americans are overwhelmingly
theistic, rather than atheistic, still begs
the question: Where is this God in
contemporary life? Do we live, move
and have our being in Him, or does
God reside on the sidelines?
Former pro baseball catcher Joe
Garagiola was talking to a sports writer
on television’s “The Today Show,”
and the two men were recalling some
humorous incidents that had happened
in baseball. Several years ago, Joe
said, a batter stepped up to the plate
at a crucial point in the game. Being
a devout Roman Catholic, he made
the sign of the cross with his bat by
home plate. Catcher Yogi Berra, on
the opposing team and also a devout
Roman Catholic, signaled for a timeout. He leaned forward across the plate
and rubbed out the sign of the cross
with his catcher’s mitt. Yogi told the
batter: “Why don’t we just let God
watch this game?”
Does God watch baseball games? I’m
not sure about that. But I am sure that
what concerns you concerns Him. He
longs to share your heartache and pain.
Each one of us has been the victim
of circumstances, and that seems
unfortunate. We must hold firm to faith
— that God is not here to remove us
from tough situations but to be with us
in them.
In 1905, Civilla Martin wrote “His
Eye is on the Sparrow,” made famous
by Ethel Waters in the Billy Graham
crusades. It is drawn from Matthew
6:26 and 10:29-31.

The Buzz: This looks much better
than anticipated, if only for Charlize
Theron as the evil queen and the way
they did the magic mirror (a sort of
shape-shifting liquid metal, like in
“Terminator 2”) I’m iffy on Kristen
Stewart as Snow White, but if the rest
of the movie is solid, this could be a
surprisingly good entry for June.

— two movies, one weekend. Aside
from that, this movie doesn’t look
exceptionally good or bad, although
there is a plethora of mostly naked
men in the trailer. The only real reason
I would see this is because of Matt
Bomer, better known as Neal Caffrey
on USA series “White Collar.” (If you
haven’t seen it, you’re missing out on
one of the most fun shows on TV.)
The Buzz: While this undoubtedly
will be funny, my money’s still on
“Brave” being the better of the two
animated films coming out this month.
That said, sometimes you’re just in the
mood for a silly comedy, and this looks
like it’ll deliver.
‘Prometheus’
Starring: Noomi Rapace, Michael
Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba,
Logan Marshall-Green, Charlize Theron
Rating: Unavailable
Summary: A team of scientists and
researchers follow a map — and what
they believe is an invitation — to a distant
world. Unfortunately, they’re mistaken
about the nature of the map. Now they
have to get back to Earth before there’s no
home to which to return.
The Buzz: Ridley Scott returns to
science fiction, and though this isn’t a
prequel to “Alien,” it is set in the same
world. Considering “Alien” is one of
the sci-fi horror classics and the trailer
for “Prometheus” looks excellent, this
probably will be well worth the time
and money.

like a ton of fun. I love how they’re going
whole-hog with the crazy ‘80s-ness. Plus,
the soundtrack has a lot of great ‘80s rock
tunes. However, my guess is this will be
more style than substance. Just keep that
in mind when buying tickets.
‘That’s My Boy’

finds out Todd is a wealthy hedge-fund
manager who’s about to get married.
Donny shows up on the eve of Todd’s
wedding to ask for the money but finds
out he might get a second chance to
actually be a father.
The Buzz: In case you were
wondering what would happen if Billy
Madison ever became a parent, this
movie has the answer. I want to believe
Adam Sandler can do good movies
again, but I’ve not been impressed
with any comedy he’s done since “50
First Dates.” This one looks like it’ll be
more “Jack and Jill,” which was, by all
accounts, terrible.

The Buzz: Pixar has been one of
the most consistent movie studios
for almost 20 years now, and “Brave”
looks like it will continue the proud
tradition of previous Pixar films such as
“Wall-E,” “Up,” “The Incredibles” and
“Finding Nemo.” Plus, this is the first
Pixar film with a female main character.
Make sure to put this one on your
“must-watch” list.
‘Seeking a Friend
for the End of the World’

last days with her family. But will they
make it before the world is obliterated?
The Buzz: I love the premise: What
would you do if you had only three
weeks to live? With whom would you
spend it? Plus, Steve Carell is generally
excellent and fun to watch, no matter
what. My only concern is this movie
will end up being unintentionally
depressing, what with the whole “end
of the world” thing and all. Give it a
chance, if you’re looking for something
different at the theater this weekend.

couple of one-liners, etc. However, the
director is probably best known for
such excellent action fare as “Step Up 2:
The Streets” and “Justin Bieber: Never
Say Never.” View at your own risk.

The Buzz: A family drama is certainly
a change of pace from the rest of the
month. And it’s kind of cool to see Chris
Pine and Elizabeth Banks in a movie not
in the sci-fi genre. You might want to
give this a shot if you need a break from
the constant stream of action movies and
comedies coming out this summer.
‘Madea’s Witness Protection’
Starring: Tyler Perry, Eugene Levy,

Summary: A CFO at the center of
a major Ponzi scheme goes into the

The Buzz: Tyler Perry has another
movie, written by and starring Tyler
Perry. If you’ve enjoyed prior Madea
movies, you’ll probably like this one.
It looks a little less serious — OK, a lot
less serious — than some of Perry’s
other movies, like “Diary of a Mad
Black Woman” or “I Can Do Bad All by
Myself.” But it does have Eugene Levy,
who is usually good for some laughs.
Finally, Tyler Perry. Will it be great? No.
However, Perry’s good at filling his niche,
and his core audience consistently loves
his movies. Good for him for that at least.
‘Magic Mike’

Summer packed with reality and scripted series, including ‘Dallas’ re-boot

We told you in The Buzz May issue about
ABC’s foray into vocal competitions,
“Duets.” Several weeks prior to the
May 24 premiere, Lionel Richie was
replaced by John Legend. Richie
blamed scheduling conflicts. He’s been
busy promoting his country album,
“Tuskegee,” released in March. Legend
— the 33-year-old singer/songwriter/
actor perhaps best known for “Ordinary
People” — joins Kelly Clarkson,
Jennifer Nettles and Robin Thicke in
the search for undiscovered talent while
singing with them every week.
Disney Channel’s “A.N.T. Farm” will
start Season 2 at 7 p.m. June 1 with backto-back episodes. Including all TV series
last year, the comedy was No. 1 among
ages 6-11 and No. 2 with ages 9-14. It
stars singer China Anne McClain as
Chyna and Sierra McCormick (Susan
in “Ramona and Beezus”), and follows
a group of kids enrolled in a gifted
program at their San Francisco school.
On June 3, ABC will bring back “Secret
Millionaire” at 7 p.m. and “Extreme
Makeover: Weight Loss Edition” at 8 p.m.
“Drop Dead Diva” will return June
3 on Lifetime. Kim Kardashian will
start a three-episode guest arc that
night as Nikki LePree, a former juicebar hostess who’s decided to be a
relationship expert.
The MTV Movie Awards, hosted by
comedian/actor Russell Brand, will be
broadcast live at 8 p.m. June 3. Winners
are determined by fan votes.
MTV’s “Teen Wolf” will get a twonight Season 2 premiere — at 10 p.m.
June 3, then in its regular slot (9 p.m.
Mondays) the following day.
“Hotel Hell,” a new offering from
Gordon Ramsay, will debut at 7 p.m.
June 4 on Fox. Similar to “Kitchen
Nightmares,” the chef and a team of
hospitality-industry veterans as they

struggling inns, bed and breakfasts,
and hotels.
“Are You Normal, America?” will
debut at 8 p.m. June 4 on OWN. The
game show will use scientific surveys,

camera and in-studio demonstrations
to help contestants discover what they
have in common with other citizens.
“Real Housewives of New York City”
will start Season 5 at 8 p.m. June 4 on
Bravo with several new cast members.
“Pretty Little Liars” Season 3 will
premiere at 7 p.m. June 5 on ABC Family.
“Rizzoli & Isles” will be back at 8 p.m.
June 5 on TNT, moving to Tuesdays
this season. The show based on the
book series by Tess Gerritsen stars
Angie Harmon as a police detective
and Sasha Alexander as a medical
examiner. Following it at 9 p.m. will
be “Franklin & Bash,” the legal drama
starring Mark-Paul Gosselaar and
Breckin Meyer.
“Jane by Design” will return at 8 p.m.
June 5 on ABC Family. It stars Erica
Dasher as a teen (Jane Quimby) who
leads a double life as a high-school
student and an assistant to a fashion
executive. Andie MacDowell (Vi Moore
in the “Footloose” remake) co-stars.
And starting June 19, Terri Hatcher
(“Desperate Housewives”) will appear
as Jane’s long-lost mother. She’ll also
make her directorial debut.
“Royal Pains” will resume house calls
when Season 4 premieres at 8 p.m.
June 6 on USA. The second season of
“Necessary Roughness” will kick off at
9 p.m.
The second outing of NBC’s “Love
in the Wild,” with new host Jenny
McCarthy, will get underway at 7
p.m. June 7 with a two-hour premiere,
then air at 8 p.m. Thursdays thereafter.
Contestants go through rigorous tasks
and challenges while trying to find love.
The twist this year in the Dominican
Republic will be the surprise addition of
seven more guys, so they will starting
out in threes instead of pairs.
Canadian supernatural medical drama
“Saving Hope” will debut at 9 p.m. June
7 on NBC. In this one, Toronto’s HopeZion Hospital chief of surgery is in a
coma after and auto accident. His spirit
roams the halls as his surgeon fiancé and
other doctors are trying to save him and
struggle with their daily lives.
Fox will do a night of dating shows
this summer, starting with the debut of
“Take Me Out” at 7 p.m. June 7. George
Lopez will host as 30 women stand on
lit podiums each week while meeting
a variety of men. They’ll leave their
lights on if impressed, turn them off if
not. The next hour will be occupied by
a celebrity match-making series that
takes some concepts from NBC’s “The
Voice” and “The Dating Game.” In
each of its six episodes, “The Choice”
will put four famous folks (from sports,
music and TV) in revolving chairs and
only listen to suitors describe their
lives, interests and turn-ons. Celebs
who like what they hear can pull their
“love handles.” In the cases of multiple
swiveling, the contestants get to pick.
After a “speed choice” round between
three suitors, each celebrity will pick
from his/her final two for a date to take
out that night. Among participants are
Joe Jonas; TV Superman Dean Cain;
“American Idol” winner Taylor Hicks;
NFL players Ndamukong Suh, Rob
Gronkowski and Warren Sapp (retired);
“Jersey Shore” stars Pauly D and Mike
Sorrentino; and Rob Kardashian. The
sole episode with famous women will
feature model/actress Carmen Electra,
former Playboy model Hope Dworaczyk,
Miss USA 2010/WWE wrestler Rima
Fakih and Australian singer/actress
Sophie Monk).
“Lives on Fire” — a series that follows
four female firefighters in Riverside
County, Calif. — will debut at 8 p.m.
June 8 on OWN.
“Million Dollar Neighborhood” will
debut at 8 p.m. June 9 on OWN. The
series is set in debt-ridden Aldergrove,
where residents will attempt to increase
their net worth by $1 million within
three months. In “Real Life: The
Musical” (9 p.m. June 9), Broadway
hopefuls will work with a vocal coach
and choreographer each week to
surprise someone they love with a
“flash musical.”
The 66th annual Tony Awards will be
broadcast live at 7 p.m. June 10 on CBS.
Neil Patrick Harris, star of “How I Met
Your Mother,” will host for the third
time as Broadway’s best are honored.
Season 5 of “True Blood” will premiere
on at 8 p.m. June 10 on HBO.
The June 10 season-finale episode of
Lifetime’s “The Client List” will be
directed by star Jennifer Love Hewitt
and feature a guest appearance by Betty
White. The beloved comedic actress
will play the wife of one of Riley Parks’
(Hewitt’s) clients at the day spa who
has some advice for a long-lasting
marriage. See it at 9 p.m.
“Our America with Lisa Ling” will
return at 9 p.m. June 10 on OWN.
Among topics Ling will investigate:
Native American culture, a nun’s life,
“swingers” and teen pregnancy.
The new season of “Tia & Tamera” will
premiere June 11 on Style Network.
ABC Family will debut “Bunheads”
at 8 p.m. June 11. Executive-produced
by “Gilmore Girls” creator Amy
Sherman-Palladino, the series stars
Tony Award-winning actress Sutton
Foster as a Las Vegas showgirl who’s
past her prime, and impulsively gets
married and moves to a small town.
TNT’s reboot of “Dallas” is set to debut
at 8 p.m. June 13. The series features
Larry Hagman (J.R.), Patrick Duffy
(Bobby) and Linda Gray (Sue Ellen)
reprising their original roles along with
a new generation of Ewings.
June 14 will bring the beginning of
“Burn Notice” Season 6 at 8 p.m. on
USA, followed by the start of “Suits”

“Let It Shine,” Disney Channel’s
gospel/hip-hop musical adaptation of
“Cyrano De Bergerac,” will premiere
at 7 p.m. June 15. It stars Tyler James
Williams (“Everybody Hates Chris”)
and Hollywood Records artist Coco
Jones. There will be a dozen original
songs from artists such as Rock Mafia,
Toby Gad and David Banner.
Season 2 of “Falling Skies,” the alien
drama starring Noah Wyle (“ER”), will
premiere at 8 p.m. June 17 on TNT. The
network will use it as a lead-in to “The
Great Escape” the following week.
It’s a new reality competition from the
producers of “The Amazing Race.”
Robert De Niro’s daughter, Drena De
Niro, will guest-star on the June 16
episode of “NYC 22” at 9 p.m. on CBS.
She’ll play a detective investigating a
possible rape.
Unless CBS wins a copyright lawsuit
claiming “The Glass House” is a “carbon
copy” of its “Big Brother,” ABC will
debut the new reality competition at 9
p.m. June 18. Competing for $250,000, 14
contestants live together and are subject to
viewers’ whims. Watchers get to provide
feedback and vote online and via social
networks regarding elimination, plus
what contestants wear and eat, where they
sleep, what games they play, etc.
Half-hour comedy “Baby Daddy”
will debut at 7:30 p.m. June 20 on ABC
Family. Jean-Luc Bilodeau (Josh on
“Kyle XY”) stars as Ben, who becomes
a new dad when his ex-girlfriend leaves
her daughter on his doorstep. He gets
help from his mother (Melissa Peterman,
Barbara Jean on “Reba”), brother, best pal
(Tahj Mowry, who I remember as cute
little Teddy on “Full House,” also little
brother of Tia and Tamera Mowery) and
friend (Chelsea Kane).
“Jersey Shore” spin-off “Snooki &
JWoww” will debut at 9 p.m. June 21 on
MTV. See notorious party girl Snooki’s first
trimester as an expectant mom.
HBO will debut “Newsroom” at 9 p.m.
June 24. The drama stars Jeff Daniels as
a controversial cable news anchor, Sam
Waterston as the network president and
Jane Fonda as CEO of the network’s
parent company.
“Wipeout” will return at 8 p.m. June 28
on ABC.
MTV will bring back “Awkward” for
Season 2, starting at 9:30 p.m. June 28.
Charlie Sheen’s new sitcom, “Anger
Management,” will debut at 8 p.m. June
28 on FX with back-to-back episodes. It’s
loosely based on the Jack NicholsonAdam Sandler movie of the same
name. Sheen stars Sheen as Charlie, a
former baseball player and therapist
who specializes in anger management.
His actual father, Martin Sheen, will
play the character’s dad, Selma Blair
his therapist and Shawnee Smith his
ex-wife Jennifer. One of Sheen’s real
ex-spouses, Denise Richards, will gueststar as Jennifer’s new business partner.
The second season of “Wilfred” will
start at 9 p.m. June 28 on FX, followed
by the third season premiere of “Louie”
at 9:30. “Wilfred” will feature Robin
Williams guest-starring as Ryan’s
(Elijah Wood’s) therapist.
Comedian Russell Brand’s half-hour
talk show will debut at 10 p.m. June
28 on FX. According to the network,
“Strangely Uplifting” will offer
“Brand’s unvarnished, unfiltered take on

Ride” video (2009) and began dating after
she starred in the “Barefoot Blue Jean

“Sweet Caroline” singer Neil Diamond,
71, got married April 21 to his 42-yearold manager, Katie McNeil. It’s his third

Mumford and Carey Mulligan wed
April 21 in England. The 25-year-old
singer/musician and 27-year-old Oscarnominated actress were childhood pen
pals. They reconnected at one of his

There are plenty of emergencies for Dr.
Derek Shepherd to handle on “Grey’s
Anatomy,” and it turns out Patrick
Dempsey can handle a medical response
off camera too. The 46-year-old actor
pulled a 17-year-old male from his
vehicle that had overturned three times
in an April 24 accident near Dempsey’s
home. Dempsey, wife Jillian and several
neighbors stayed with the teen until he
could be flown to the hospital and treated
for a concussion and eye injury.
Former Spice Girl turned fashion
designer Victoria Beckham admitted to
Vanity Fair how being in a big rush made
her feel “like such an idiot.” The 38-yearold mom of four recalled: “I got up early
with Harper (her daughter, whose first
birthday is in July), sorted Harper out, got
all the kids their breakfast, got them ready
for school, put Harper in the car seat and
said, ‘Come on, kids, we have to get going
or we’re going to be late.’ So I jump in
my Range Rover, put the car seat in, put
my iPod on — obviously very important
— and I drive to school.” But son
Brooklyn, 13, was the one who was to be
dropped off at school, and she eventually
realized she’d left him in the kitchen. She

Jewel has been cast as June Carter Cash
— a biographical role that earned Reese
Witherspoon an Academy Award in
2005’s “Walk the Line” — in a new
Lifetime movie. The script will be based
on “Anchored in Love: An Intimate
Portrait of June Carter Cash,” the memoir
written by her and Johnny Cash’s son,
John Carter Cash. Johnny and June were
married 35 years until her death in May
2003. He died four months later. Matt
Ross (“American Horror Story”) will play
Johnny. Jewel hosted Bravo’s “Platinum

Nothing short of ambitious
NBA veteran says boys club allowed him to aim high

A
nthony “Spud” Webb defied
the odds during his 13-year
professional basketball career.
Listed at 5-foot-7, Webb is one
of the smallest players to ever reach the
height of the NBA. And what helped
him persevere beyond measure was
spending much of his time at the Dallas
Turnkey Boys Club.
“As soon as I could
join, I did,” Webb
said in a recent
interview with The
Buzz. “I ended up
going there for years
and years. I’m still
friends with a lot
of the guys who
were my mentors
who kept me off the
Michael
streets, and kept me Westbrook
on the straight and narrow path for me
to be successful in life.”
The former NBA player is continuing
his long legacy of giving back to the
Boys and Girls Club with a June 2
appearance in Durant during a charity
golf tournament hosted by Silverado
Golf Course to generate funds for the
organization. Durant is just one of
the many stops Webb — who’s now
president of basketball operations
for the Texas Legends, the Dallas
Mavericks Developmental League team
— will make during the off-season.
“We go out and try to raise money to
keep kids in the clubs. We have great
mentors who work and volunteer at
the clubs. They help the kids get on the
right path.
“There are more Spud Webbs or
Denzel Washingtons out there — a lot
of guys who came through the Boys
and Girls Club who became successful
in life. Many teachers, firemen and
police officers too. This club keeps
kids off the street and gives kids an
opportunity to be successful in life, and
that’s why I support it.”
In 2011, Webb was inducted into the
Boys and Girls Club Alumni Hall of
Fame, and when asked about the honor,
he was pretty matter-of-fact.
“If you are put in the hall of fame,
then you are doing something right.”
He also said, for all the troubles he
went through, it is more difficult for
today’s young people.
“It’s worse now, a little more to deal
with, more of a fight to put up to keep
kids off the street and from seeing the
bad things in life, trying to show them
things like getting the proper education
[is harder].” Webb’s time at the Turnkey Club
kept him in the gym, which led to his
excellent basketball skills. But it took a
while for the small guy to get noticed.
Although he missed the cut for the
varsity team at Wilmer-Hutchins High
School the first time he tried out, Webb
didn’t give up. Once he earned his spot,
he ended up averaging 26 points per
game and was one of only 10 players
selected to the Texas All-State Team his
senior year.
Despite those achievements, major
college programs backed away,
not willing to use up a basketball
scholarship on someone listed at 5-7.
Webb landed at Midland (Texas) Junior
College, where he led the Chaparrals
to the 1982 national championship.
The late North Carolina State coach
Jim Valvano was persuaded by thenassistant coach Tom Abatemarco to give
Webb a shot. Valvano did, and Webb
spent two seasons with the Wolfpack.
In June 1985, the NBA’s Detroit
Pistons took a chance on Webb as a
fourth-round draft selection. Webb
had reached his dream of professional
basketball, even if it didn’t last with
the Pistons. On Sept. 24, 1985, Detroit
renounced its draft rights to Webb,
basically meaning he was not signed to
a contract. Two days later, he was given
an opportunity with the Atlanta Hawks,
the team for which he would play twice
during his career.
Webb admitted he likes his position
with the Legends due to the secondchance mentality, like that of a Boys and
Girls Club.
“The [NBA] strike slowed things
down, but it’s picking back up. And
hopefully every team will have a minorleague team, so that we keep guys off
the streets and keep guys from having
to go overseas. We get a lot of veteran
guys trying to make comebacks and a
lot of young guys trying to reach their
dreams of playing in the NBA.”
One of Webb’s early aspirations was
to compete in the NBA Slam Dunk
Contest. In 1986, he not only entered
but won the event at Reunion Arena
in Dallas in front of his childhood
hometown crowd.
“Competing in the dunk contest
is something I always wanted to do.
Watching Dominique Wilkins, Dr. J
(Julius Erving) and Michael Jordan
compete against each other, I wanted to
compete in it. I knew the dunks I could
do; I just needed the opportunity. When
you get that opportunity, you have to
take advantage of it, and it was a dream
come true for me.”
Webb beat out Jordan and Wilkins in
that contest.
In 2006, Webb was used as a prop in
the dunk competition, when 5-foot-9
New York Knicks guard Nate Robinson
jumped over Webb before jamming his
way to his first slam dunk title.
Six years later, Webb was invited back
to Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, the
host site of All-Star weekend 2012, as
a judge for the dunk contest. Robinson
won the event for the third time.
Of course, Webb still follows the NBA
very closely due to his position with the
Legends and said his favorite player to
watch is one of the superstars.
“LeBron James, he’s a one of a kind.
Hopefully he can get his championship
(with the Miami Heat) this year and get
the critics off his back.”
Webb also said Magic Johnson and
Larry Bird had an impact on him
because they made other players better.

U.S. Women’s Soccer Team Goalkeeper
Hope Solo in the net and spotlight

Y
ou might have seen her patrolling the goal for the United
States Women’s National Soccer Team or perhaps featured
in a rather daring photo shoot in ESPN
the Magazine’s 2011 “Body Issue.” It
could have been on
ABC’s “Dancing
with the Stars” last
fall. Opportunities
to spot Hope Solo
have been plentiful,
and she’s becoming one of the most
recognizable figures
in female sports.
Solo has been

soccer since she
joined the U.S. women’s team in 2005.
She is considered by some to be the
best goalkeeper in the world. At last
year’s World Cup, Solo recorded two
shutouts and her penalty shootout save
against Brazil is the stuff of legends. She
is also a two-time all-star in Women’s
Professional Soccer.
But Solo continues to venture outside
her safety net. She recently spent some
time touting her newest project, a line
of skin care products called Simple, and
chatted a few minutes with The KLBC
Buzz. She seemed a little nervous when
straying away from soccer talk but was
very passionate when discussing her
sport. Despite all the side interests and
attention, Solo made it clear she didn’t
play soccer to become a media star.
”I am an athlete through and through,
and that’s what I set out to do, starting
when I was 5 years old. It was my dream
in life. It wasn’t to be famous, to be in
photo shoots or to do endorsements. It
was all about being an athlete.”
Solo didn’t begin between the posts in
her early soccer days in Richland, Wash.
“Goalkeeping chose me, to be honest.
Our goalkeeper got hurt and the coach
said, ‘Hey, who wants to try out to be a
goalkeeper?’ All of us raised our hand
in a joking manner. You know what? I
ended up being very good at what I do.
I was young. I didn’t become a full-time
goalkeeper until I was in college and I
was 18.”
She is also working to change the way
people view those who defend the net.
“A lot of times, coaches don’t want
to put the athletes in goal. They want
them up top, scoring goals. I’m trying
to prove that stereotype wrong.
Athletes need to be in the goal. It’s not
easy being a goalkeeper. They need to
be agile, quick, have lateral quickness
and athleticism. I hate to say this, but
finally, you’re starting to see the non-fit
kids get out of the goal.”
Solo embraces being a role model
to young athletes, and it is a source of
pride for her.
“I realize, as an ambassador for the
sport, you have obligations outside of
the white lines and the goal mouth.
Those obligations are to build your
sport and to help female athletes find
the path in society today.”
Staring down an opposing player
during a World Cup overtime kick is
nerve-wracking enough. But Solo said
her jet-setting professional life and soccerrelated travel is another source of anxiety.
“It’s stressful — lots of travel, lots of
appearances and lots of airplanes. I hate
to fly. It’s a major fear of mine. I don’t
admit that too often. It’s a lot of travel,
training and sweat. Many athletes live by
seasons. Soccer athletes live by four-year
cycles, which are usually determined by
the World Cup and Olympics.”
The pace is starting to accelerate for the
U.S. women’s soccer team as it prepares
for the Summer Olympics in London.
“We go three weeks on and one
week off. When we are in the camp,
we probably do six hours on the field
on double days. Two or three days, we
are in the weight room and in the gym
doing fitness, strengthening, quickness,
agility and things like that.”
The women’s soccer team will enter
the Olympics rated the No. 1 team in
the world. But Solo said the United
States will have plenty to prove in the
wake of recent agonizing setbacks in
world competition.
“We just lost to Japan in last
summer’s World Cup. We also lost in
group play to Sweden. We lost four
years ago in the Beijing Olympics to
Norway in group play. So, right now,
it’s anybody’s game, which is exciting
for fans. It’s also exciting for the game
because, truly, we are putting the best
product on the field.”
Solo obviously must stay in shape,
and training is part of her regime while
trying to juggle all her obligations
and demands put upon her. She also
confessed she likes to “do nothing”
when given the rare opportunity.
“In my off time, I tend to live
a healthy lifestyle. I live a very
balanced life. I’ve found, when you
live a balanced life and when you are
dedicated to fitness and to be the best
on the field, you don’t have a lot of
cravings. The more I work out, I find
that I don’t crave sweets. Right now,
going into the Olympics, I feel good
about myself.”
Solo said her move into endorsing
health and beauty products is
something new.
“I’m an athlete, and I don’t like to
admit that I like to primp a little bit. I’m
not going to lie. You’ve got to feel good
on the field. My motto for some time
has been, ‘You look good, you feel good
and it will result in playing good.’ It’s
all about confidence.
“A lot of people see me as a confident
woman, and I am very confident on the
field. But I have some insecurity in regard
to how I look on the television, specifically
breaking out and my skin care.”
So, Solo said the decision to lend
her name to Simple came easily,
considering some of the skin problems
she encounters while competing.
”My schedule is incredibly hectic and
can induce a lot of acne pimples, oily
skin, dryness and a lot of break-outs.
I can go to London and don’t have
to worry about that and can focus on
bringing home the gold medal.”
Nice little sales pitch there, I thought.
Don’t expect Solo, who’ll turn 31
in July, to fade away from the soccer
limelight anytime soon. She gave no
indication that retirement is in her
immediate plans.
“My passion is for soccer and I hope to
be in the game for several more years, and
it’s not something I really want to think
about. I know that I will be fine when that
time comes. Right now, my focus, through
and through, is winning the Olympics
and winning the World Cup.”

Blythe said “they” are out to get him.
He is facing manslaughter charges
stemming from the death of a 6-yearold boy two years ago. The youngster
was riding his bicycle down a steep
drive at a church parking lot when
he hit the side of Blythe’s car. Blythe
was cited at the time for driving with
a suspended license, stemming from
a speeding ticket in 2010 in Chouteau
that he had been late paying. Manslaughter charges came months after
Riley Harralson died. Blythe claimed
the charges are the result of a political
vendetta against him, telling KTEN
news, “When I was judge, I was told, if
they couldn’t beat me at the polls, they
would file enough complaints to get me
there. And if they couldn’t get me there,
they’d get me with a shotgun.”
A teen allegedly rammed
two police cars in an attempt to flee
from a possible arrest, landing himself
in even hotter water. At 1 a.m. one
recent Sunday, Atoka police were called
about a possible fight at a home at
Liberty and Hickory streets. A young
woman at a party at the residence
pointed out a young man among
attendees whom she said had hit her.
That’s when the suspect jumped into
a car. After crashing into one blackand-white in an attempt to get away,
police said the driver backed up and
hit the second patrol car. The getaway
car apparently didn’t belong to him
either. The 16-year-old got out and ran
after the collisions but was quickly
caught by police. He’s facing charges of
aggravated assault on a police officer.

according to an article in the Johnston
County Capital Democrat. The paper
reported on a recent hearing in Ada
during which a member of a group
of landowners announced they have
been made an offer on 8 billion gallons
of water from an unnamed buyer,
pending release of a quota from the
Oklahoma Water Resources board.
It’s estimated that, if the group gets
the necessary permits, this sale will
account for approximately one-third
of the final maximum annual yield
of 78,404 acre feet that may be pulled
from the underground water source.

proceedings will be confidential.
There’s a new task
The Keystone Pipeline
will go through Texoma on its way to the
Texas Gulf Coast from Cushing, Okla. Jim
Prescott of TransCanada Pipelines came by
the KLBC studios. He said residents’ safety
concerns regarding the 3-foot diameter
pipe and its contents should be very
low and even less so than anybody who
lives a similar distance from a railway or
highway. He said, “When people express
concerns about pipeline safety, I say,
‘Compared to what? The other options are
oil tankers crossing oceans, rail or overthe-road tankers. Pipelines have a good
safety history, and it’s getting better all the
time.” The City of Durant is
moving forward with a new water
project. Included will be a well for
backup purposes, a water tower near
Highway 69 and University Boulevard,
and water infrastructure. Southeastern
Oklahoma State University is contributing
to the project, pledging a half-million in
matching funds,. The Durant Industrial
Authority also will use $500,000 at
its discretion. The city council voted
to provide another half-million, and
combined with contributions from the
Choctaw Nation, it will give the city
enough to leverage further grants from
the federal government. The new tower is
needed, according to the council, to meet
water-pressure needs for the hospital,
university and new high school.
Like a bad sci-fi movie, the
blue-green algae warnings issued by the
Army Corps of Engineers lasted way too
long to continue scaring folks. The corps
has accepted the tests on samples of Lake
Texoma waters taken by Grayson County
Health Department that showed far less
than the threshold of cells to prompt the
advisories. New legislation intends to
change how warnings are issued on the
Oklahoma side.
The Oklahoma Supreme Court
ruled there was no point in allowing an
election on the personhood proposal that
was rapidly gaining signatures to put it
to a statewide vote. Chief Justice Steven
Taylor expressed his opinion that the U.S.
Supreme Court has spoken clearly on the
issue, most recently in a 1992 decision that
state restrictions were unconstitutional. A
similar law in Missouri includes a clause
that the law was subject to interpretations
of the U.S. Supreme Court.” The
Oklahoma House leadership refused to
allow a hearing on a Senate bill that would
have made personhood a state law with
less permanence than a constitutional
amendment would have. The House had
passed legislation that also was not heard
in the Senate. Oklahoma law requires
that challenges to initiative petitions be
filed before they are turned into the state
election board for counting.
Durant police located
a stolen motorcycle after a severalmile chase at insane speeds, especially
considering there was a passenger.
Capt. Andy Navid attempted to stop
the motorcyclist after he observed it
improperly passing on the right and for
being defective. Cody Hughes, 23, took
off, first up Northeast Second Avenue,
then back out onto North First, flying
through town at a top speed estimated at
130 mph. When other agencies assisting —
including the Oklahoma Highway Patrol,
Choctaw Tribal Police and Chickasaw
Lighthorse Police — Hughes took to a
field at the Highway 78 turnoff. That
ended it quickly. He and 21-year-old Tara
Payne were arrested after being checked
for minor injuries. The motorcycle was
reported stolen in Prosper, Texas.
Former Bryan County
Sheriff’s Department officer Kevin Holt
admitted to using a Taser on a prisoner
who was strapped into a restraint chair.
The assault charge became a federal
case. The 48-year-old Achille resident
pleaded guilty in Eastern District Court in
Muskogee. The maximum penalty is 10
years and a $250,000 fine.
The arrest-warrant affidavit
in the armed robbery of a Durant
convenience store was released by police.
Jordan Scott Bradley, 18, told police that
his friend, a juvenile from Boswell, said
he wanted to rob a store, so they drove to
Durant in the younger suspect’s mother’s
car. Scott said they went through the drivethru first and purchased a beer. Parking
the car behind the store, they put on black
jackets, gloves and ski masks, and walked
into Jerry’s Drive-Thru, each carrying a
gun. He said, although they pointed guns
at the manager, he continued moving his
hand toward a drawer. When the alarm
was pushed, the two ran out of the store,
jumped into the car and started back
toward Boswell without any cash. He
said he could see a red pickup following
them. That apparently is how their vehicle
was easily identified by an Oklahoma
Highway Patrol trooper on Highway 70. A
citizen had seen the two run from the store
in ski masks and said one had pointed
a gun at him. He ducked back around

the store, then followed them. Scott said
they threw their guns and masks out the
window beside the highway. He also told
the interviewing officer he’d made the
attempt because he was hungry and had
two kids to feed. Scott now faces armedrobbery charges. Jeryd O’Neal, the citizen
in the red pickup, stayed up with the
getaway car through Bokchito until the
OHP unit caught up with them.
Alora Hix was the first of the
four people charged in the death of D.J.
Jones to go to trial and the second found
guilty. Hix was charged with second-degree murder in the case, as she lured the
young Denison man to Cartwright, where
a group of men were waiting in April 2011.
Jones allegedly accepted $550 from one
in a drug deal but never delivered any of
the promised marijuana. He was shot in
the back with a shotgun as he attempted
to run away, according to a witness in the
case. Hix was found guilty of manslaughter and ordered to serve four years in
prison. Wesley Kelley of Durant pleaded
guilty to second-degree murder in April
and was sentenced to 35 years. Harold
Haas and Dustin Metcalf await trial.
Bryan County fire depart-
ments have a proposition on June 26
ballots. A permanent one-quarter sales tax
is being requested to help fund necessities
such as gear, equipment, vehicles, training and communications. Revenue would
be split between the county’s 18 departments, and spending would require
obtaining purchase orders through the

Accidental snitch
Kids will search just about anywhere
to find something to bring in for showand-tell. So if you’re, say, hiding illegal
substances in your jacket, you might
want to make sure that’s not what your
kid grabs to show his classmates. A 5year-old boy in Connecticut went to his
kindergarten class with his stepfather’s
jacket in hand. When it came time
for him to make his presentation, the
boy proceeded to pull 50 packets of
heroin from the jacket. The teacher
immediately grabbed the bags, and the
school principal called police. The boy’s
stepfather went to the school to find his
stepson, but he only found his missing
jacket. He grabbed the jacket and tried
to make a run for it, but officers already
had taken the drugs and arrested him.
The Buzz Stinger: For show-and-tell
today, class, we’re going to see a real,
live drug bust!
The other ‘window’ peeping
From a young age, we’re all schooled
pretty well on the difference between
what we can do in public and what
should be done in private. However,
some people seem to get the lines of
propriety blurred a little. A man in
California was at his local Starbucks,
using the wireless and probably
enjoying himself some coffee. He
apparently thought that particular
moment was the absolute best time
to enjoy some pornography as well,
in full view of other patrons. And
it wasn’t just any porn. It was child
porn. An employee called police, who
arrived and found out the man was
actually a registered sex offender.
Officers confiscated his computer and
arrested him.
The Buzz Stinger: I don’t really think
it’s possible to “alt-tab” your way out of
that one.
Well, poo!
Some smugglers certainly get creative
about how to pass things through
customs. One man in India attempted to
smuggle approximately $150,000 in gold
coins through customs — by putting the
coins in baby diapers. Alas, he didn’t
get away with it. The Indian customs
officials flagged him and took the gold,
plus the 5,000 euros he had on him. The
man told officials he’d been paid 2,000
euros to bring the gold from France.
The Buzz Stinger: He should’ve told
customs that, instead of the goose that
lays the golden eggs, he had the kid
who drops the golden deuces.
Can’t argue with physics
Want to get out of a ticket? Do you
have an advanced knowledge of physics?
Then you could fight your traffic tickets
the same way a San Diego physicist did
— by writing a four-page paper about
how your ticket defies the laws of physics
as we know them. He was cited $400 for
failing to stop at a stop sign. Instead of
resorting to any of the normal solutions
we mere mortals attempt, he sat down
and wrote a four-page physics paper
to prove his innocence. Thanks to his
detailed knowledge of angular and linear
motion, he was able to get the ticket
dismissed. However, the physicist has
warned others not to try his method of
fighting the ticket, since it took a special
combination of events for his argument to
hold up in court.

charming, articulate and using way too
many words the judge didn’t know just
before 5 p.m.”

The good thing about being older
than 18 is you can do pretty much
anything you want. The bad thing is
that you can do pretty much anything
you want, no matter how stupid it is.
A 23-year-old Nebraska man decided
to change his name. Instead of Tyler
Gold, he wanted to be Tyrannosaurus
Rex. He wrote on his official filing
that the dinosaur name was “cooler”
and “more recognizable,” which was
important to him as an entrepreneur.
And since he wasn’t hiding from
creditors or law enforcement, his wish
was granted.

workers managed to pull out the fallen
man. Both men suffered burns, but the
one who’d fallen also had a broken rib
and a punctured lung. Fortunately, they
are recovering nicely.

Firefighters wing it
We’ve heard about firefighters who
rescue cats from trees, but how about
the ones who rescue ducks from storm
drains? Firefighters in Florida got a
call from a concerned citizen who saw
a distressed mother duck pacing in
front of a drainage gate. He realized
something was wrong when she
wouldn’t leave the grate, no matter how
close he got. When firefighters arrived,
they discovered the duck’s nine chicks
had fallen into the storm drain. They
got all the ducklings out and returned
them to their frantic mother. The man
who originally called firefighters said:
“When somebody needs help, you got
to try to help them as best you can, even
if that somebody is a duck.”
The Buzz Stinger: And then they all
went to the nearest restaurant for some
duck á l’orange.

There are certain things in life that
require at least a little bit of decorum.
What you say on Twitter after a plane
crash — particularly if you’re a flight
attendant — is pretty darn high on the
list. A Russian flight attendant posted a
callous tweet that not only made light
of a recent plane crash, but also bashed
her employer. After the fatal crash, she
tweeted, “Huh? Did a Superjet crash?
Hahaha! This aircraft sucks, it’s a pity
it wasn’t in Aeroflot, that would be one
less.” Though she removed her page
shortly after that, people already had
time to take a screenshot and complain
to Aeroflot about her. Sure enough,
Aeroflot fired her.

in Windsor, Ontario, when a woman
ran into the restroom screaming. It
turned out the woman was pregnant,
and her baby had decided Tim Hortons
was way better than a maternity
ward. An employee and her manager
called 911, and the operator talked
them through delivering the baby.
In less than 10 minutes, the woman
had given birth to a baby girl, her
second daughter. Shortly thereafter,
paramedics arrived to take mother and
child to the hospital.
