Dear Friend,
Imagine for a moment what it feels like to be hungry before lunch, or
when you first wake up in the morning. Now imagine feeling the gnawing
pain of hunger most of the time. Imagine that your kids are hungry, but
you don’t have anything to feed them.
Sadly, this is reality for thousands of families here in North Texas
– especially when summer comes. Once schools close for the summer,
children who depend on their schools’ free and reduced-price lunches and
breakfasts are often left wondering where their next meal will come from.
Many of these kids come from families who already struggle to make
ends meet. But with the economic crisis affecting more North Texans
every day, there are families and children at risk of going hungry this
summer who might live just down the street or who go to the same school
as your children.
No child deserves to be hungry – ever. That’s why the North Texas
Food Bank is doing everything we can to fight childhood hunger this
summer. Not only will we continue to provide hot meals to hungry
children through the Kids Cafe program, but for the first time ever, we’ll be
operating the Food 4 Kids backpack program all summer long at summer
school sites throughout our 13-county service area. We’re also launching
the brand-new Summer Lunch Box program, which will provide nutritious
boxed lunches to hungry children throughout the summer.
Of course, none of this is possible without your help. Your support
of the North Texas Food Bank is instrumental in our efforts to provide
nutritious food to families and children who need it.
As you read the stories and see the pictures of the families and children
on the following pages who have already been impacted by your generosity,
I hope you’ll be encouraged by the difference you’re making in our
community. Thank you for all you do for our neighbors in need.
Hungry Children Have Full Stomachs
Thanks to You
When a child is hungry, it’s impossible for him to think about anything but his growling stomach.
Even his favorite summer pastimes or playing with friends can take a backseat to thoughts of when he’ll
get to eat again.
The Boys & Girls Club of Navarro County in Corsicana is working hard to combat childhood hunger.
This Member Agency of the North Texas Food Bank serves healthy, filling snacks to hungry children in
the area throughout the school year and during the summer months.
Director Eula Linicomn says most of the children they serve come from low-income families and
otherwise wouldn’t get enough to eat – especially during the summer months when many
of them aren’t receiving free or reduced-price school meals.
“The food is a godsend for some of these kids,” she says. “It’s a source of
nutrition they wouldn’t have if they weren’t here.”
Eula says the snacks the children receive are healthy, filling foods like
granola bars, fruits and vegetables – items
that they typically don’t have access to at
home and that are essential in helping them
grow to their full potential.
“A lot of our kids are not used
to eating nutritious snacks,” she says.
“We’re not only providing nutrition,
but an opportunity to learn about
different foods.”

Savor Dallas
Thanks to all who participated in Savor Dallas in
March. The North Texas Food Bank benefited from
a portion of the proceeds, and $15,170 was donated
– which will provide 60,680 meals for those in need!
Thank you to Jim and Vicki White who organize this
annual benefit, as well as all who attended.
Panera Operation Dough Nation
Thanks to all Panera Bread customers who donated
to the Operation Dough Nation Box in Panera
Bread stores. The Panera Bread Foundation matches
50 cents of every dollar donated, and all collections
in the Dallas area benefit the North Texas Food
Bank. Your generosity showed in 2008 – the Food
Bank received a check for $22,643 – which will
provide 90,572 meals for those in need. Thank you!
You’re Fighting
Summer Hunger!
AFI Dallas
You provide nourishing
food for the homeless
and hurting.
The Food Bank wishes to thank AFI Dallas for its
continued partnership. As a community partner, the
Food Bank’s
logo appeared
on “the big
screen” at least
three times
before each
of the 180
film screenings at the Angelika Film Center, AMC
NorthPark and the Magnolia Theater. Movie goers
were encouraged to give to the Food Bank through
AFI Dallas’s “Cans” Film Festival, where participants
donated two cans of nonperishable food items in
exchange for $2 off admissions to any AFI Dallas
International Film Festival regular screening. Funds
were collected through the AFI Virtual food drive
prior to the beginning of the festival March 26,
where donors were entered into a drawing for VIP
AFI Dallas International Film Festival passes.
Hungry children are all

Souper Bowl of Caring
The second annual Greater Dallas/Fort Worth
Souper Bowl of Caring Food Drive was a huge
success. From January 7 through February 1,
nonperishable food and cash donations were
collected at 217 participating Albertsons, Central
Market, Kroger and Tom Thumb grocery stores.
Many local schools, faith organizations and youth
groups also collected food and funds. More than
887,322 pounds of nonperishables and $256,420
were collected to benefit Tarrant Area Food Bank
and the North Texas Food Bank. Thank you to our
grocery and media partners, and all who participated
to help make this drive a success!

Dash Down Greenville

Sara Lee Foundation Grant
Thank you to the Sara Lee Foundation for
sponsoring expanded food distribution in Paris, Texas
through February 2010. The Foundation provided
a generous grant which will be used to distribute
nutritious food through pantries operated by Food
Bank Member
Agencies in the
city of Paris. The
funds will provide
an additional
100,000 pounds of
food - equivalent
to 78,000 meals to families and individuals in need of food assistance
in the Paris area. Thank you, Sara Lee Foundation!

On March 14, more than
4,200 runners gathered
on Greenville Avenue for
Dash Down Greenville,
the annual St. Patrick’s
Day 5K run and walk,
presented by Run On! and
hosted by Central Market.
The event raised $35,607 for the North Texas
Food Bank, which will provide more than 142,428
meals! Thanks to Run On!, Central Market and all
sponsors including Quick, Jack FM, Coca-Cola,
the Café at Central Market, TwoRows and Brooks.

breakfast and coffee for our volunteers. Save the

Food Bank! The
donation was part of a promotion with Sesame
Street Live. In January and February, Dallas and
Fort Worth area Long John Silver’s restaurants
raised money and awareness by offering a free
Sesame Street Live coloring and activity book for
each $1 donation, with all proceeds benefiting the
two food banks. To highlight the donation, Sesame
Street Live characters Elmo and Grover surprised
students at the ChildCareGroup Center in Dallas,
a North Texas Food Bank Member Agency.

Give Back
A recent USDA study shows that Texas leads the nation with the highest
percentage of families who are food insecure – meaning parents can’t always afford
to feed everyone in the household. And with the economic downturn, the term
“food insecure” no longer applies to just those living in poverty.
In addition to providing these families with access to nutritious food through
our network of Member Agencies, the North Texas Food Bank is working hard to
break the cycle of hunger by promoting nutrition education. That’s why we recently
partnered with Frito-Lay to create a cookbook specially designed for North Texans
living on a
limited budget.

the project, gathering recipes and compiling content with the help of other FritoLay employees and Frito’s Nutrition Team.
“There isn’t a cookbook available today that encourages healthy food preparation
for clients who may have limited means and need creative, tasty and nutritious
ideas for their families,” she says. “It was clearly an unmet need.”
Jenny also served as the project manager for Frito-Lay’s first Plano-based food
and fund drive to benefit the Food Bank. The month-long campaign raised more
than $13,000 and focused on high-quality protein like tuna, chicken, ham and
hearty soups. They collected 5,454 pounds of nutritious food!
“When I walk by and see all these cans of food, I feel so proud,” says Jenny. “I feel
incredible pride that I work around people who are so generous and see the need
and want to step up and support it.”
We are so grateful to Jenny and to her colleagues at Frito-Lay for helping to
create such an important resource for those in need in our community, and for
helping to raise awareness about the issue of hunger here in North Texas.

On April 19th at The Glass Cactus, more than 700 guests
enjoyed a fantastic tailgate party featuring dishes from more
than 20 of DFW's finest chefs, live bands and a silent auction.
This annual event benefiting the North Texas Food Bank was
hosted by Chef Kent Rathbun, Dallas Cowboys DeMarcus
Ware and Marcus Spears and five-time Super Bowl star Preston
Pearson. Thanks to our hosts, auction committees and guests,

Give Back
A recent USDA study shows that Texas leads the nation with the highest
percentage of families who are food insecure – meaning parents can’t always afford
to feed everyone in the household. And with the economic downturn, the term
“food insecure” no longer applies to just those living in poverty.
In addition to providing these families with access to nutritious food through
our network of Member Agencies, the North Texas Food Bank is working hard to
break the cycle of hunger by promoting nutrition education. That’s why we recently
partnered with Frito-Lay to create a cookbook specially designed for North Texans
living on a
limited budget.

Frito-Lay Research & Development Senior Manager Jenny Birgé spearheaded
the project, gathering recipes and compiling content with the help of other FritoLay employees and Frito’s Nutrition Team.
“There isn’t a cookbook available today that encourages healthy food preparation
for clients who may have limited means and need creative, tasty and nutritious
ideas for their families,” she says. “It was clearly an unmet need.”
Jenny also served as the project manager for Frito-Lay’s first Plano-based food
and fund drive to benefit the Food Bank. The month-long campaign raised more
than $13,000 and focused on high-quality protein like tuna, chicken, ham and
hearty soups. They collected 5,454 pounds of nutritious food!
“When I walk by and see all these cans of food, I feel so proud,” says Jenny. “I feel
incredible pride that I work around people who are so generous and see the need
and want to step up and support it.”
We are so grateful to Jenny and to her colleagues at Frito-Lay for helping to
create such an important resource for those in need in our community, and for
helping to raise awareness about the issue of hunger here in North Texas.

On April 19th at The Glass Cactus, more than 700 guests
enjoyed a fantastic tailgate party featuring dishes from more
than 20 of DFW's finest chefs, live bands and a silent auction.
This annual event benefiting the North Texas Food Bank was
hosted by Chef Kent Rathbun, Dallas Cowboys DeMarcus
Ware and Marcus Spears and five-time Super Bowl star Preston
Pearson. Thanks to our hosts, auction committees and guests,
the event raised $175,074, which will provide 700,294 meals for
hungry North Texas children!

You Help Families
Get Back on Their Feet
As missionaries in South Africa for more than a decade, Sam and his wife have spent most
of their adult lives helping those in need. So they never imagined that one day they’d find
themselves asking for help.
When the economy began to take a turn for the worse last year, Sam and his wife
lost the financial support that was keeping them afloat during their service in Africa and
were forced to return home to the States. Unfortunately, adjusting to life back home
has been harder than they anticipated.
Because of the difficult job market, Sam has had a hard time finding
steady employment. He started out working for a temp agency and eventually
found a job in sales. But once the company’s business started declining,
Sam’s hours were cut in half. He eventually resigned because he could not
support his family.
“Thank you...

Now Sam is looking for a job again, but he says it’s even harder this
time around. The family has applied for food stamps, but since it’s such a
lengthy process, he’s not sure when they’ll receive assistance. Sam’s 5-yearold son, Sammy, is on the reduced-price lunch program at school,
which helps stretch their food budget. But with summer coming,
Sam and his wife are worried about having enough food for
the whole family. For the first time in their lives, they really
need help.
“It’s been a struggle,” says Sam. “I’ve never been a
person who was in need.”
Fortunately, friends like you are helping families
like Sam’s every day. Thanks to your gifts to the
North Texas Food Bank, he can take home
nutritious groceries from Metrocrest Social
Services in Carrollton. This Food Bank Member
Agency helps families in need like Sam’s with
bills and employment assistance in addition to
healthy food. Sam is so grateful for the food he
receives – and he knows it’s possible in part thanks
to your generosity.
“Thank you!” he says with genuine appreciation.
“Have the feeling of fulfillment, because you are
helping someone.”
