Cutting Directions
Note: Cut all 42" strips horizontally
from selvage to selvage. Four Log
Cabin blocks in the featured quilt have
six randomly placed red pieces. If
desired, you can replace any dark blue
piece with a red piece of the same
size, which you can cut from leftover
fabric.
Ohio Star Blocks
From each of the red print fabrics, cut:
Two 41⁄4" squares and one 31⁄2" square
(for red blocks)
From the assorted light beige and
cream print fabrics, cut a total of:
Four sets consisting of one 41⁄4"
square and four matching 31⁄2"
squares (for red blocks)
One set consisting of two 41⁄4"

Note: Use a 1⁄4" seam allowance throughout. Sew all pieces
with right sides together and raw edges even, using matching
thread. Press seams as indicated.
Ohio Star Block Assembly
1. Quarter-square triangle units. Gather together one 41⁄4"
light square, one 41⁄4" blue square, and two matching 41⁄4"
red squares. Cut each square diagonally in half twice. Sew
each light triangle to a red triangle to make four light/red triangle units (Diagram 1). Press seams toward the red triangles. Stitch each blue triangle to a red triangle to make four
blue/red triangle units (Diagram 2). Press seams toward the
red triangles. Sew the units together in pairs and trim even to
make four 31⁄2" x 31⁄2" sections (Diagram 3).

Log Cabin Block Assembly
Note: If desired, replace random blue pieces with red pieces
of the same length. Press seams away from piece 1.
1. Sew a 11⁄2" red piece 1 square to a 11⁄2" light piece 2
square. Stitch a 11⁄2" x 21⁄2" light piece 3 to the right side and
then a 11⁄2" x 21⁄2" blue piece 4 to the bottom (Log Cabin
Block Diagrams). Continue adding pieces 5 through 17
clockwise in numerical order, pressing all seams away from
the center unit. Square up the block to measure 91⁄2" x 91⁄2".
2. Repeat step 1 to make a total of 15 blocks.

2. Noting orientation, stitch the four quarter-square triangle
sections together with four matching 31⁄2" light squares (for
the block corners) and a matching 31⁄2" red square (for the
block center) into three horizontal rows (Ohio Star Block
Diagrams). Press seams toward the squares. Sew the rows
together, matching all seams. Press seams away from the
center row and square up the block to measure 91⁄2" x 91⁄2".

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to make a total of four red Ohio
Star Blocks. In the same manner, make one blue block using
dark blue fabric in place of light fabric for the block background pieces and light pieces in place of red pieces for the
star points and block center.

Log Cabin Block Diagrams
Note: Refer to the Quilt Layout Diagram for steps 1 through
3. Measure your quilt top vertically and horizontally through
the center before trimming and cutting the border strips. If
your measurements are different from those given, adjust
your strip lengths accordingly. Press all border seams away
from the quilt center after adding each strip.
1. Noting orientation and placement, sew the blocks
together into five horizontal rows of four blocks each. Press
rows seams in opposing directions. Stitch the rows together,
matching all seams, to complete the 361⁄2" x 451⁄2" quilt
center.
2. Inner border. Trim two 11⁄2" x 42" tan print strips to
measure 361⁄2" long, then sew to the short sides of the quilt
center. Stitch the remaining three tan strips short ends (or
diagonally) together to make one long strip. Press seams
open. Cut two 471⁄2" lengths, then sew to the long sides of
the quilt center. The quilt top now measures 381⁄2" x 471⁄2".
3. Outer border. Trim two 51⁄2" x 42" red tonal strips to
measure 381⁄2" long, then stitch to the short sides of the quilt
top. Sew the remaining three red strips short ends (or diagonally) together to make one long strip. Cut two 571⁄2" lengths,
then stitch to the long sides of the quilt top. The top now
measures 481⁄2" x 571⁄2".
4. Layer the quilt top right side up on top of the batting and
the wrong side of the backing. Baste the layers together and
quilt as desired. (Note: The featured quilt was quilted in the
ditch and in diagonal rows across the quilt top using light
thread.) Trim backing and batting even with the top.
5. Bind as desired using the six 21⁄2" x 42" navy print strips.
