itjime (fold and clamp), arashi (pole wrapping),
and a myriad of stitched Shibori techniques.
Delve into the shaped and sculptured aspects of
Shibori processes. BA.

Discover the miraculous life span of the silkworm that mysteriously creates a living “green”
fiber factory. Enjoy the ancient Japanese
processes that transform this small white cocoon
into “mawata,” a Japanese term for this type of
silk wadding. Watch demonstrations and have
hands-on experiences processing the fluffy, soft
mawata into threads, yarns, and sheer gauzy
sheets. Understand the different qualities of silk
fibers produced within the cocoon and marvel
at the incredible versatility of the cocoon and its
contents. A real first for The Silk Experience.
Also offered as 474 on Thursday afternoon. Do not enroll
for both.

East meets West with these elegant jewelry and
gift pouches. Create these beautiful items
with silk ribbon embroidery and traditional
Victorian embroidery. Worked on jewel-tone
fabrics, the pouches look rich and artistic. The
little doll pouch is a conversation piece as well.

J. B. Scharf
Do you enjoy the look and feel of silk? Learn to
stabilize silk and techniques for foundation,
needleturn, fused, and machine appliqué onto a
12in silk jacquard block. Demonstrations and
some hands-on machine (only a few machines
in Silk Experience classroom) and hand appliqué will use various silks, silk threads, and
wonderful silk batting. This, in turn, can transform the silk square into a beautiful pillow cover,
purse, or wallhanging.

SILK NATURESCAPES
*$107
Noriko Endo
Explore the Naturescapes process Endo utilizes
in her award-winning quilts. Silk strips, silk
fibers, silk ribbons, and silk threads, in turn are
attached to a muslin base by machine stitching
and are held in place by a layer of tulle. This layering of fiber and stitching form Impressionistlike images which offer special creativity. “Color
blending” can be achieved with the help of instant-set silk dyes. A final layer of tulle completes
the unique dimensional nature project. Quilt

Marlene Glickman
Utilize large roll-hemmed white silk scarves to
create your own hand-dyed fabric. Color the
scarf using self-setting dyes. Experiment with
mixing and blending the dye colors as well as
achieving complex effects with simple scrunch
(Shibori) dye techniques. Then Sara Hochhauser
will help you transform your hand-dyed scarves
into a one-of-a-kind garment—a ruana, shawl
with silk bead closure, sarong, or poncho. Walk
away from class with wearable art your friends
will envy.
June Colburn
Explore the fascinating art of fabric design and
take home a yard of dyed, patterned silk for your
next art quilt or garment project! Mix your own
colors; develop a plan based on guidelines for
geometric, repeat, and border design; use multiple techniques—immersion, shibori, brush,
silk screen—to layer colors and patterns. The element of surprise adds fun to creativity! Colburn’s
trunk show is full of ideas. Bring your camera!
