March Newsletter Volume 3-13 T HE M ONTHLY C ABLE ` Peggy’s Purls By Peggy Baxter Well, we're back from Stitches West. What a great weekend! Am so glad that ESSS had so many members attend. Know there was lots of learning, laughing, shopping, laughing, shopping, stitch marker swapping and ESSS, we have a WINNER in our midst. Yes, Ana Petrova won an Editor's Choice award for one of her beautiful shawls. Congratulations,Ana! FYI, do you realize that for the past 3 years that I've attended Sttiches West, ESSS has had an Editor's Choice winner in the student fashion show? I won in 2011 for a granny square vest, Sarah won in 2012 for her City Scape Double knitted jacket and now Ana has won for her shawl in 2013. - WHO will it be in 2014??? YOU? I would like to say a BIG thank to you to our three ESSS members/teachers, Karen McCleary, Suji Brewer and Ana Petrova for giving us such great information about three different ways to do short rows. Did you find a favorite way to do them? This information is really going to help with our current KAL and future projects too. Thank you, too, for those who stayed to help put up tables and chairs. Since we are in the big room now, this is an additional clean-up for us, but well worth it, I think. I believe Karen McCleary will be putting more detailed information in this newsletter regarding our collection for March Program – Knitting & Technology by Ana Petrova and Lenora Stewart Supporting your Knitting with Technology Websites, Apps and other resources for the 21st Century Knitter Ravelry, U-Tube, Our Guild Website, and more! No Knitting Homework! But you might want to bring your iPad, Smartphone, Laptop device. NOTE: There is no WiFi at the Joslyn Center so bring your "Hot Spot" if you have one. INSIDE THIS ISSUE Peggy’s Purls / March Program / KAL /CAL 2012 1 Program Planning / Shop Review / Foxy Knits ad/ Knitting From Across The Sea 2 Upcoming events / Notice board / Charity Report / Birthdays 3 ESSS February Minutes 4 Yarn Angels, but I would like to thank everyone in advance for cleaning out their closets, garages etc. and bringing items for this charity to distribute. Remember, they have several charities that they give items to, thus they can use a variety of things....stamps, stationery, gift cards, children's toys, books, lap robes, stuffed animals, hats, baby things, toiletries, etc. And finally, we will be having a silent auction (with assigned numbers) for our library items in APRIL. Since most of our members have "gone digital", our books, DVD's and ??? are no longer being checked out, thus ESSS does not have the need for a Media Librarian. Thank you to Merilyn Burnside for being our Media Librarian and housing our extensive collection. Hope to see you at our March Sit 'n Knit. It's March 10, 12:30-3:30PM (double check your clocks as it's Daylight Savings Day weekend) at the Joslyn Center. Bring your WIP's, snacks(optional), and guests for a fun Sunday afternoon. The shop was a nice oasis on a chilly night when most stores were filled with last minute Christmas shoppers. Purl was busy, but not swamped so we had a nice time checking out the shop. The shop has an eclectic selection of products: knitting and crochet supplies, embroidery, sewing and patchwork supplies. Purl is a really charming little shop—lots of cute little vignettes in little cubbies. There were some fun kits, both yarn and fabric crafts. I noted that there seemed to be a good selection of needles and other notions. The selection of gifty things, includes their own Purl totes and project bags and the most incredible graphite “sculptures” of leaves, shells, etc. that can actually be used for writing and drawing and other fun things. I spent most of my time shopping for yarn since I wanted to purchase some to use for the Coquille KAL. The selection of yarns was nice and not too overwhelming to this fairly new knitter. I found a beautiful aqua variegated superwash merino/cashmere blend from Anzula. I was most impressed by the service. Even though it was somewhat busy, staff were happy to dig through a giant drawer of yarn to find extra. I would definitely shop here again, thanks to the great service. Check out their website www.purlsoho.com. Their warehouse is in Southern California, so we can get our orders in just a day or two. The shop blog (www.purlbee.com), has lots of great patterns/ Program Peggy Baxter’s Special Program Reading Patterns and Charts Getting Your Project Started, Creating the Fabric (Drape) You Want Birthday Potluck Cables Sally Melville Workshop Seaming your pieces together I-cord and Applied Edge Treatments * Joyce Wyatt Special Program Holiday Potluck Continental Knitting July August August 24 & 25 September October November December Emergency Program * Alternate meeting place or time – TBD Merilyn Burnside And Foxyknits THANKS To all ESSS members for their support – We had a very successful StitchesWest ! Knitting From Across the Sea by Jacki Breiacher By Sarah Wood As you have seen in the KAL section above I have been trying to finish things again, mostly because I leave for my Cruise to the Far East with Lily Chin next week and want an excuse to be able to buy yarn while I am away (not that I normally need one). I will admit to making some changes to the pattern, mostly because I got to the middle gusset and realised I would have a little over half a ball of crazy zuaberball left and I wanted to use it all, in the end I had about 6 inches left so it all worked out really well. I also finished a Citron Shawl for myself in 3ply patons fairytale wool and hope to finish a couple more things before I leave (although time is quickly running out!). I have been trying to decide what to take with me to work on between classes, still havent made up my mind, so many things I want to work on!! I have been doing my bit by kinitting in public, mostly on the Bus to my weekly client meeting in Victoria which takes about 1.5 hours each way, makes the journey productive and means I can sightsee while I travel which you cant really do on the underground. I have been to a couple of shops this month, Knit with Attitude, is in Stoke Newington, it’s a shop share where two busniesses have half of the area each. The owner is from Norway and they sell yarns with a ethical consciousness. Last weekend I volunteered to test knit the Emanating Sweater pattern via the free pattern tester group in Ravelry which of course meant I just had to go shopping for some DK weight yarn. So dispite the cold weather I hopped on a bus and went to JJ Wool Crafts in Chingford, and wow what a busy shop, I wasn’t there long but there were lots of people going in and out. They have mostly Rowans, Sirdar and Patons yarns but unfortunately didn’t have enough yardage to cover what I needed. So I hopped on another bus and went to Teasels in Walthamstow where I managed to pick up enough Sublime DK merino in a grey blue to complete the sweater. They seem to cover lots of crafts but have lots of wool to choose from, the only thing missing was a table to knit at. Forest Falls, CA Knit in Public Day June 8th TBD April 11-14. http://www.studio66retreat.org Notice Board Chartiy Report Ellen Bloom writes: My cousin, Nurse Audra Katz runs the cancer program at UC San Francisco Fertility Clinic. Her group harvests eggs for women of childbearing age and freezes them so that they can have biological children post chemotherapy (chemo kills their fertility because it kills the eggs). Audra’s mother used to make most of the caps for Audra. However, she recently found out she has breast cancer and has not been able to fulfill this obligation. Audra’s patients absolutely LOVE receiving the caps and always get very emotional at the kindness of strangers. They all have hair because it’s right before chemo starts. This is the first cap they receive before losing all of their hair. Audra has a small supply of soft chemo caps that she likes to give to her patients receiving chemo, about 1-2 ladies a week, but her supply is limited. On an ongoing basis, I’ll be knitting and/or crocheting and collecting chemo caps and sending them to Audra's clinic. If you'd like to join me in donating a couple of chemo caps, that would be wonderful. Each and every cap will make a difference. Please tag each cap with washing instructions. Thank you!
