History of St. Joseph Convent
Three religious women, Sisters
Alexia Hoell, Alfons Schmid and
Clara Seiter, immigrated to America in September of 1873 from
Schwarzach, Germany. On April
28, 1874, after many trials, hardships and disappointments and
with the help of new-found friends
the Sisters settled in Campbellsport, Wisconsin.
The Sisters saw their mission as
educating the children of the German Immigrants. After opening
the school in September, Sister
Alexia immediately contracted for
a four story combination school,
boarding home and convent to be
built to accommodate the growing
numbers of students and Sisters.
In 1880 the parish began plans for
a school building while Sister
Alexia began an expansion of the
already too small convent.
Today there are over 70 retired
School Sisters of St. Francis living
in the convent. All volunteer their
services in some capacity. A few design special rosaries out of rose petals as unique remembrances for families.
The process which was
brought over from Germany by the
early Sisters of the Community.
The amount of roses needed depends on size and quality of the
rose. All beads turn black, no
matter the color of the rose.
The sisters make the rose petal rosaries on a per order basis. Full
size rosaries, one-decade rosaries
and rosary necklaces and bracelets
are available for purchase, using
your own petals or ones provided
by the Convent.
A rose petal rosary is a wonderful
thing for families to remember
their loved ones, or make a wonderful gift from a special occasion
like a wedding or anniversary.
Dried rose petals from wedding bouquets or floral arrangements from
funerals are used to craft beads for
handmade rosaries. The process is
lengthy because rose petals are
crushed and mashed into a paste that
takes several days to ferment and
prepare. The paste is then molded
into small beads that harden and are
used to make the rosaries.
An added benefit is that it keeps
people praying the rosary!
All proceeds from the sale of the
rosaries help support the various
missions and charities the sisters
support.
