Welcome to the inaugural UK Handmade Bicycle Show –
a celebration of the handmade bicycle industry.
Bespoked Bristol is the event for bicycle makers and customers to come together to
discuss and share ideas. Buying a custom bicycle means embarking on a partnership
that will hopefully last a lifetime. Where partners must be chosen wisely - a fellowship
between customer and builder. Everyone’s riding philosophy is different and to have a
bicycle made that reflects your style, involves meeting those who can understand your
needs.
Bespoked Bristol is not a trade fair where you are shown products, this is a place to view
craftsmanship, discuss possibilities and buy dreams!

The Bicycle Academy
A place to learn how to make bikes. You keep the skills, the bikes go to people
who really need them. The Bicycle Academy is an exciting new Social Enterprise
focused upon generating sustainable bikes for Africa. Frame building will be taught
by legendary frame builder Brian Curtis as evening classes and short weekday
courses. Each student will make a Bicycle Academy designed frame (designed
specifically for use in Africa) which will then be built up into a working bike before
being distributed to people in Africa via partnering charities.

The aim of this directory is to be the comprehensive reference point for people wanting to find out about
handmade bicycles and those who make them. The section of the directory we have included here is
Custom UK Frame Builders. Please visit our website www.thmbd.com to view the full list of categories

When people talk of a handmade or custom bicycle they are more than likely referring to having the
frame made for them, painted to their specification and then choosing the components to best suit that
style of the frame. These frames will not exist until its commission.
We hope to have included all the UK frame builders in these pages. Please email [email protected] to let
us know of any omissions and we will update our online directory.

Many of the well known mass produced bicycles are handmade but are done so using production line
techniques. So to help clarify the term ‘handmade’ we have come up with some further classification: -
Custom Built – In House (excluding painting)
Every aspect of the frame is selected to suit the rider (and their budget), tubing/material, frame angles,
joint type, braze-ons and frame colour. The frame will be the end result of a consultation process often
involving a frame fitting. Not all framebuilders have spraying facilities in-house. These frames do not exist
before being commissioned.
Expect to pay upwards of £1000 for a custom made frame.
Custom Built – Manufacture Outsourced
Almost identical to the above apart from the manufacture of the frame is outsourced. This is more common with titanium and carbon frames due to the more complex manufacture process. It would not be
uncommon for a frame builder to produce their steel frames in house but outsource other materials.
Again, these frames do not exist before being commissioned.
Expect to pay upwards of £1000 for a custom made frame.
Off The Peg/Boutique Frames and Bicycles (small scale batch production)

A frame designer designs the frame, choosing the tubing/materials, angles etc. The frames are then
made to these requirements often in a range of sizes.
These bicycles are sold as frame only or with a selection of build options as the designer will have given
consideration to what will suit the style of frame. These frames exist before commission.
Expect to pay upwards of £300 for a frame depending upon materials, complete bicycles often cost
around £1000 but this depends greatly on the components.
Manufacture can be in house or outsourced this will be stated in the listing.
Within this category are some larger producers who make a range of bicycles of which only some meet
the ‘boutique’ label.

using a Calfee sizing jig and BikeCAD Pro.We use Reynolds 953, Columbus and other

completely unique, bespoke project. Made in Italy by a family of registered artisan frame
builders with over sixty years experience, our frames are silver fillet brazed or lugged. The
silver fillet brazing method - very rare, skilful, time consuming and expensive - affords brazing
at low temperatures, without compromising the steel’s strength. This means that our frames
are extremely strong and durable.
