HANDMADE
DESIGN FOR DEVELOPMENT
TIKAU combines Scandinavian design and Indian handicraft
traditions with the vision of employing and empowering the
artisans of rural India. The word Tikau comes from Hindi and
means sustainable and durable.
The collection consists of handmade home décor and clothing
accessories for everyday wear. Our luxurious materials are
hand processed and designed to be sustainable in terms of the
environment, quality and aesthetics. Ecological considerations
are at the root of our designs: local environmentally-friendly
raw materials include bamboo, organic cotton, non-dyed wool,
banana fiber, cashmere and recycled sari fabrics. Most of our
products are non-dyed or use natural dyes and the use of handmade processes minimizes energy consumption.
Taking a uniquely long-term, personal and human approach,
Tikau collaborates directly with its 120 artisans, combining
Scandinavian design skills and traditional craftsmanship in
their home villages of India. Because each item is hand-made,
it expresses the unique and individual signature of the artisan
who made it.
Tikau works in close collaboration with the charity-based
NGO Tikau Share. Sustainability, human dignity and global solidarity are at the heart of the Tikau identity.

FELTED WOOL CARPETS

Tikau felted rugs are processed and
embroidered by hand in a few artisan family communities in underdeveloped areas of Kashmir. These
colorful felted wool rugs have been
traditionally kept in the homes to
keep the floor warm during the cold
winters. The embroidery technique
used to make these felted rugs is
called the “Ari” technique. Because
the rugs are handmade, each of
the rugs is unique and reflects the
signature and style of the artisan
who has made it.

DESIGN HELPS – The Tikau Light Collection was born in the collaboration of
the company Tikau, Tikau Share NGO, Finnish designer Ilkka Suppanen, SAAS
Instruments and the artisans of a small remote village in Orissa, India. This Light
Collection was designed to help a poor and socially excluded untouchable community
by providing them livelihood – and fair income hand in hand with the Tikau Share
association’s humanitarian program.
The designs are created by Ilkka Suppanen and Helsinki based SAAS Instruments
combined cutting edge LED technology and fiber optics to produce an energyefficient and sustainable lighting solution.
Each edition of these lights is handmade and unique.

BANANA FIBER BASKETS
Ecological banana fiber items are
hand crafted by local artisan women
in South India.
The programme was initiated with
the aim of providing better income,
social status and empowerment to
the local women.
The material used for the bags
and baskets is the locally available
banana fiber made out of the
“dead” leaves of the banana trees.
These leaves, previously considered
as waste, are now getting a new life
in the form of contemporary and
sustainable items.

Kala and it is known as a highly
energy and water efficient variety.
The organic cotton project together
with the local artisans and NGOs
