ZANESVILLE AREA INFORMATION
2580 Maple Avenue – Zanesville, OH 43701
Located on I-70 fifty miles east of Columbus, Zanesville is the county seat
and largest city in Muskingum County.
Zanesville was founded in 1797 by John McIntire on land deeded by his father-in-law, Ebenezer Zane. It
was Zane who led a party of men to cut a road (Zane's Trace) from Wheeling, WV southeastward to
Maysville, KY, leading to the establishment of Zanesville, Lancaster and Chillicothe at major river
crossings. At one time known as "Clay City" and "Pottery Capital of the World," Zanesville has a rich
history in the production of utilitarian and art pottery, traditions that continue to this day. Zanesville is also
noted for its unique Y-shaped bridge which spans the confluence of the Muskingum and Licking Rivers.
The current structure is the fifth Y Bridge since 1814. Amelia Earhart called Zanesville "the most
recognizable city in the country," referring to the Y Bridge's usefulness as a navigational aid to pilots.
ZANESVILLE AREA INFORMATION CONT.

Zanesville, Ohio
Located on I-70 fifty miles east of Columbus, Zanesville, Ohio is the county seat and largest city in Muskingum County. The city has a
total area of 11.5 square miles. Zanesville has relaxing outdoor recreation, notable historical sites, unique shopping and fine dining. I-70
a major east-west Interstate highway passes through the city with US 40 closely paralleling it and US 22 approaches from the southwest.
These arteries provide easy access to Pittsburgh, Wheeling, Columbus and Cincinnati. The busiest road in town is Maple Avenue, a
north-south thoroughfare roughly connecting the downtown area to newer retail centers on the north edge of the city.
Muskingum County, Ohio
Muskingum County is located in eastern Ohio. It is predominantly rural, with less than one percent of the county's 665 square miles
consisting of urban areas. Muskingum County seems to be remaining stable in population. The county averages 129 people per square
mile. The largest employers in Muskingum County are retail establishments, with manufacturing businesses a close second. Other
businesses also flourish in the county, such as Volvo Trucks and Custom Vans of Zanesville. The county also enjoys a booming tourism
industry, due to the pottery manufacturers, as well as the Longaberger Company. Zanesville and Muskingum County are located within
one day’s truck drive of about 60% of the U.S. population.
Major Highways: The National Road, now U.S. Route 40, is paralleled by Interstate 70, one of the most heavily traveled highways in
America. While both highways pass through the middle of Muskingum County, I-70 has developed as a major freight corridor. Every day
more than 40,000 vehicles move along I-70 through Zanesville. That is over 14 million vehicles per year. Muskingum County resides at a
logistical sweet spot as approximately 10 miles to east of the county I-70 interchanges with I-77 and 37 miles and 48 miles to the west, I70 interchanges with I-270 and I-71, respectively. The Zanesville-Muskingum County is well positioned to serve the population centers of
the East Coast and the Midwest.
Air: Zanesville Municipal Airport (ZZV) is located approximately six miles east of Zanesville and one mile south of I-70 Exit 160. ZZV has
two runways and can accommodate corporate jets. Those travelers looking for a regular commercial service will find Port Columbus
International Airport 56 miles away from Zanesville via interstate highway. Air cargo moves in and out of the regional via Rickenbacker
International Airport, which is also part of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority.
Rail: Muskingum County is served by the Ohio Central Railroad, a Genesee & Wyoming, Inc., railroad. To the west, Ohio Central
connects with both CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern (NS) at their intermodal rail yards in Columbus. To the east, Ohio Central
has a connection with NS on the Ohio River at Mingo Junction. Finally, to the north, Ohio Central also connects with the Wheeling & Lake
Erie Railroad at Brewster.
Broadband Telecommunications: Muskingum County is served by cable, fiber, dsl, and wireless service providers for high-speed Internet
connections.
State of Ohio
Ohio is a Midwestern state of the United States. The thirty-fourth largest state by area in the U.S., it is the seventh-most populous with
nearly 11.5 million residents. Ohio's geographic location has proved to be an asset for economic growth and expansion. Because Ohio
links the Northeast to the Midwest, much cargo and business traffic passes through its borders along its well-developed highways. Ohio
has the nation's 10th largest highway network, and is within a one-day drive of 50% of North America's population and 70% of North
America's manufacturing capacity. There are 399 corporations based in the United States and around the world that chose to invest
more than $7.1 billion in Ohio for their business expansion. As a result, Ohio is now the top U.S. market for new and expanded business
facilities.
