Setting Up an iPhone Wi-Fi Hotspot What is tethering?
Setting Up an iPhone Wi-Fi Hotspot
What is tethering?
Turning your phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot to share connectivity with other devices is called “tethering”.
Tethering, or setting up a personal Wi-Fi hotspot, takes the Internet connectivity in your phone and
broadcasts it for other devices that access the Internet.
How do I set it up?
Go to the "Settings" menu on your phone, into Personal Hotspot.
Turn on the Personal Hotspot setting and always ensure you have set a Wi-Fi Password. The password
provides security so that only you or others who know it can connect to your network. You don't want to
be broadcasting an open Wi-Fi signal for everyone to use.
How do I connect to my device(s)?
Once your Hotspot is broadcasting, multiple devices can be connected to it using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
Using Wi-Fi, your device will see the phone network name (or SSID) the same way it sees any other
routers or Wi-Fi network.
To connect your Smartpay EFTPOS terminal to your Wi-Fi hotspot, please refer to the document “Set Up
Guide for WIFI on the D210/D200”.
To connect your Smartpay EFTPOS terminal to Smartlink and the Till2Go iOS POS app, please refer to the
document “Set Up Guide for Smartlink Lite with POS on the D210/D200”.
Wi-Fi Troubleshooting:
If you encounter an issue using your iPhone Personal Hotspot with other Wi-Fi devices, try these steps:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Turn Personal Hotspot off.
Turn on Wi-Fi: Tap Settings > Wi-Fi.
Turn Personal Hotspot on.
If another device can't join your Wi-Fi network, make sure the Wi-Fi password is correct.
If the device can't see your Wi-Fi network, check your device name.
See how many devices are using your Personal Hotspot. Depending on your wireless carrier, the
number of Wi-Fi connections may be limited to three devices at once.
7. If the other device still can't connect, turn Wi-Fi off and on for the device.
8. Make sure that your device can see other Wi-Fi networks.

Troubleshooting Note:
•
If you see "Unable to Join" or a timeout error when you try to connect a device using Wi-Fi, remain
on the Personal Hotspot screen until the first device connects. After the device connects, you can
leave the Personal Hotspot screen and use your iPhone normally.
• Your device will stop broadcasting Wi-Fi if you put it to sleep or if 90 seconds elapse and no
connected devices use Wi-Fi. To share your Wi-Fi network again, tap Settings > Personal Hotspot.
Notes:
• You can also create a mobile Wi-Fi network using a Mobile Hotspot device. Check with your telco
provider or local consumer electronics store about devices and plans they have available.
Remember not all devices are created equal. Make sure the one you use has WPA2 or WPA-PSK
encryption and change your password regularly.
• To avoid unnecessary data charges, turn off Personal Hotspot when not in use.
• Please be aware that some users have experienced connectivity problems with the hotspot on their
Apple device running iOS 7.x. This is a known Apple issue and you can find various forums with more
information on the internet. If you experience any issues follow the troubleshoot steps above. If
that does not work try turning both devices off and back on again to reset the connection.
