2014 Children’s Summer Reading Program
(up to Grade 5)
Begins: Monday, June 23rd
Ends: Friday, August 15th (at noon)
Our 8-week Summer Reading Program is open
to children entering Pre-K through Grade 5.
Tweens & teens entering Grade 6 or higher are invited
to participate in our Young Adult Summer Reading Program.
The goal of the program is to encourage reading throughout the summer months.
Books read must be age-appropriate.
The Library’s summer reading goals are as follows:
Grades Pre-K–1 = 3 books per week (24 books total)
Grades 2 & 3 = 2 books per week (16 books total)
Grades 4 & 5 = 1 book per week (8 books total)
Children who meet their goal will receive a cool expanding flying disc OR clip-on
magnetic sketcher, as well as a free kids’ ice cream cone from a local ice cream shop!
They will also receive a special invitation to attend our Summer Reader Celebration
Party on Friday, August 15th at 2:00pm for cake and entertainment by magician
Debbie O’Carroll! Also, any child who doubles his/her reading goal
will be entered into a mystery prize drawing!
Sign-up begins on Monday, June 23rd at 10:00am.
Summer readers who check out at least 8 books at sign-up will receive
a pair of Big Look Binoculars!

Program Attendance Policy
The Library will charge a $5.00 fine to a patron’s library card
when said patron fails to give the Library advance notice
of their inability to attend a program for which they have registered.

Baby/Toddler Be-Bop (Ages 6-36 months)
Tuesdays & Wednesdays @ 10:30am
This 25-minute music & movement class
incorporates popular children’s songs, finger plays,
and simple stories while utilizing props such as
puppets, tambourines, and rhythm sticks. It is
intended to be an interactive class for children and
their caregivers.
Preschool Story Time (Ages 3+)
Tuesdays & Thursdays @ 2:00pm
Join us for stories and a themed craft.
Note: There will be no Story Time on
Tuesday, July 15th.

Summer Reading Kickoff –Evan Gottfried’s
Family Music Extravaganza
Wednesday, June 25th @ 2:00pm (All Ages)
Come along with Evan on his musical adventure,
where everyone gets to be a kid! Get ready to
shake, shine like a rainbow, reach up high like a
tree, and “bubble” over with excitement!
“Is There Water on Zork?” (Ages 7-12)
Thursday, July 10th @ 11:00am
Become inhabitants of the alien planet Zork and
help Earthlings find water. After listening to the
story June 29, 1999, participants will conduct
simple experiments to test the characteristics of
mystery liquids to discover if Zork has water. You
will work in groups and use common household
objects to test liquids for pH, adhesion,
evaporation, and other properties to make your
conclusions. This program is presented by the
DEEP’s Kellogg Environmental Center.
“Travels with Billy Green – The Seal”
Creative Story Production (Ages 5 & up)
Tuesday, July 15th @ 2:00pm
Presented by local artist Mariette Kammerer,
children will interpret artwork and create stories
around it.
“From Trash to Tunes” with Dennis Waring
(Ages 5 & up)
Friday, July 18th @ 2:00pm
Join musician Dennis Waring as he plays his
handmade musical instruments based on ideas
from around the world. These instruments are
made from materials which are usually thrown
away as trash! Learn about the origins of music
and gain new insight into folklore, music, craft, and
science.
“In the Woods: Who’s Been Here?”
(Ages 4-6)
Friday, July 25th @ 11:00am
Come and listen to the story In the Woods: Who’s
Been Here?, then expand your naturalist skills by
solving mysteries of natural finds like footprints,
feathers, twig chewings, and objects seen around
the state. Each child will make and take home a
nature journal of their own to help continue their
exploration. This program is presented by the
DEEP’s Kellogg Environmental Center.
The Lego Movie - Rated PG (Ages 5 & up)
Wednesday, July 30th @ 2:00pm
Join us to watch this popular movie on our new
state-of-the-art projection system.
“Slime-ology” (Entering Grades 1 & 2)
Wednesday, August 6th @ 2:00pm
Join us in discovering the magic of polymers and
exploring physical changes. Each child will make
their own batches, and be able to take some home.
This program is presented by the Discovery
Museum.

Summer readers who meet or exceed their goal will
receive a special invitation to join us for cake,
magic, and fun! They will also be recognized with
a Summer Reading certificate.
