SOFT FURNISHINGS STAGE 2 QUALIFICATION
This is a 216 hour course to be completed within one year designed for those interested in learning
the professional skills required in a soft furnishings workroom. This course leads to a professional
qualification and may lead to employment within the Furniture, Furnishings and Interiors industry.
During this time the candidate will produce notes and samples on the following:









Basic Design Skills: sketching, colour co-ordination and scale drawings
Health and Safety issues relevant to the work place
Industrial Sewing Machine Technology
Fabric Recognition and Composition
Fabric Pattern Matching and Trimmings
Curtain Tie-Backs of varying shapes - one to be piped
A sheer curtain sample
Roman Blinds
Estimates and Costings
The candidate will also produce the following full scale pieces for assessment:






A window treatment to include, as a minimum, a pair of full-length hand-made interlined
curtains with a hand-stitched heading
A piped boxed cushion incorporating a zip, in striped or checked fabric
Two decorative scatter cushions – commercially viable
A bed valance with a gathered or pleated skirt
A decorative throw over bedspread - commercially viable
Written Research Project – on types of suspension systems for various shapes and styles
of windows including bays, taking into account inward opening casements, allowing for
window fitments and other obstacles
Course Fees: £3120 inclusive of VAT plus sundry materials used in the sample pieces
AMUSF Registration Fee: £25 + VAT payable direct to the Association of Master Upholsterers
and Soft Furnishers.
ASSESSMENT PIECES - You will be required to supply 10 metres of patterned curtain fabric and
two metres of a plain contrast fabric in order to produce the samples (these could be remnants).
You will also be required to supply all materials used on your full-scale assessment pieces and any
other projects you may decide to do.
TOOLS & EQUIPMENT - You will be expected to supply your own tools and equipment as the
course proceeds, according to your means. On your first day, please bring a couple of metres of

fabric, a notebook and pen and a camera to record your work. Please also bring whatever sewing
kit you may already have and something for your lunch.
This is a one-day per week course on a Monday, starting Monday 1st September at 9.30 a.m. to
4.30 p.m.
