SCOUTING FOOD
As we enter the holiday season we are surrounded by images
of joy, excitement and celebration. But even in the midst of
this festivity, thousands of people in our community are
hungry with almost half of these being children. And, the
need is growing every day. Through Scouting for Food, we
have the opportunity to help alleviate this need.
Through this cooperative effort, we will make this
the largest food drive in the Circle Ten Council’s
history. Our role will be two fold. On February 7th
and February 14th, our Scouts will again canvas the
neighborhoods, knocking on doors and collecting
food that will be delivered directly to food pantries
within your community. For other ways to help,
such as assisting with the unloading at the pantries,
please contact your unit leader, district’s Scouting
for Food Chair, or your district executive.
We know that your unit calendar is full, but this
is a worthy cause and we urge your unit to be a
part of it – and to enable your leaders and Scouts
to be a part of it. Your district Scouting for Food
Chair will be contacting units soon for your
commitment.

HIGH ADVENTURE NEWS
Circle Ten Philmont Day
Saturday, October 18th from 9 a.m. until about noon we will have a couple of presentations to assist units preparing
for a Philmont trek next summer. Philmont is sending a representative to provide information about Philmont and
planning for your trek. We will also have a presentation on equipment. Advisors, youth and parents are welcome to
the meeting at the John D. Murchison Scout Office, 8605 Harry Hines.
Philmont 2015
Circle Ten has a few crews available for next summer. The first group departs June 11, 2015 and returns June 24,
2015 and the second group departs June 23, 2015 and returns July 6, 2015. There will be some opportunities to go
to Philmont next summer for individuals and small groups. Philmont participants must be 14 years of age prior to
arrival OR completed 8th Grade and be at least 13 years of age prior to participation. If you’re interested email Scott

Northern Tier 2015
Limited space still available at Northern Tier for the 2015 winter and summer program season. 2015 Northern Tier
participants must be 14 years of age OR completed 8th Grade and be at least 13 years of age by the date of arrival.

Sea Base 2015
Sea Base has a limited number of opportunities for the summer of 2015. Log on their system soon and see if there

Philmont 2016 - NEW PROCESS FOR PHILMONT DIRECT CREWS
Beginning in 2016, any unit will be able to attend in consecutive years. Unit reservation requests for 2016
Expeditions for Philmont Scout Ranch will be made online beginning Wednesday, October 29 thru Wednesday,
November 19, 2014. Please read this information completely for instructions on the process, fees, and attendance
requirements for Philmont. The following information is provided to assist your unit in placing a reservation
request:
From Wednesday, October 29 thru Wednesday, November 19, 2014, reservation requests will be accepted online
for 12-day and 7-day Expeditions. This is strictly a random draw and an entry on October 29, 2014 will be treated
equally as an entry on November 19, 2014.

Reservation requests for 2016 begin on January 15th 2015 and will end February 15th 2015. We will then conduct a
Lottery and you will be notified as to the results by email.
Triple Crown of National High Adventure Award & Grand
Slam of National High Adventure Award
The Charles L. Sommers Alumni Association (SAA) in conjunction with the Boy Scouts
of America have authorized the issuance of a special certificate and patch to honor those
Scouts and Scouters who have participated in at least one qualified high adventure program
at three National High Adventure Bases operated by the Boy Scouts of America. The SAA
created the Triple Crown of National High Adventure Award (Triple Crown) in 1996 to both
promote all National High Adventure programs and help identify those Scouts with a thirst for
High Adventure who may potentially be interested in serving on the staff of the Northern Tier and
other High Adventure programs. The Boy Scouts of America’s National High Adventure Bases are:
Northern Tier High Adventure Program (Northern Tier), Philmont Scout Ranch (Philmont), Florida
National High Adventure Sea Base (Florida Sea Base), and Paul R. Christen National High Adventure
Base (The Summit).
The Grand Slam of National High Adventure Award honors those who have participated in at least
one qualifying high adventure program at all of the Boy Scouts of America’s National High
Adventure Bases: Northern Tier High Adventure Program (Northern Tier), Philmont Scout
Ranch (Philmont), Florida National High Adventure Sea Base (Florida Sea Base), and Paul R.
Christen National High Adventure Base (The Summit).
The patch for The Grand Slam Award has not been finalized yet and applications are
not being accepted at this time. Details will be released on the following

Eligible participants must be registered with the Boy Scouts
of America as a Boy Scout or Venturer and have been born
between July 27, 1997, and July 28, 2001. These age ranges
are set by the World Organization of the Scout Movement
(WOSM) and are not negotiable.
International Service Team (IST)
To join the IST at the jamboree, you need to have turned 18 at
the start of the camp, July 28, 2015.
Leaders
All Boy Scouts of America leadership must meet the
requirements listed on the adult leader Web page at
www.scouting.org/worldjamboree. In addition, councils must
first give their approval to applicants. Selection will then be
made under the direction of each regional director.
Registration and Payment
Registration and payment of fees will be done online. The
Web address for general information is www.scouting.org/
worldjamboree. The cost of participation in the 23rd World
Scout Jamboree is as follows:
Adult Leader and Youth Participant— $5,750
International Service Team— $2,000

Winter Camp
As the leaves start to change and the relentless summer heat finally starts to subside, its time to start planning
for WINTER CAMP at Trevor Rees-Jones Scout Camp! Click HERE for the Circle Ten Council 2014 Winter
Camp page featuring the leaders guide and the new Merit Badge Addendum (available October 15) and all the
information that you need to plan your Winter Camp adventure. Staff reports on December 26, and the check in
for troops will begin on December 27. Cost is $35 per person and you can sign up through campmaster HERE.
Calling All Adult Leaders Who Love to Shoot!
What do you think the most commonly earned elective merit badges are? Rifle Shooting (13), followed quickly
by Archery (17) and finally Shotgun Shooting (26). What’s common among all these? The need for trained and
certified Adult leaders. That’s right in order for the Scouts, and Venturing Crews to participate in these activities,
units, districts and councils need to a have a large group of trained adult leaders for these three activities.
Fortunately Circle Ten has an active certification process in place and offers certification classes in Rifle, Pistol,
Shotgun, Range Safety Officer and Archery throughout the year. Check out the Circle Ten Shooting Sports
website (http://www.C10ShootingSports.org) or the Shooting Sports
Supplemental Training Page on the Circle Ten website
(http://circleten.org/shooting-sports) for more information and a list
of classes and dates. You can sign up for the classes directly from either
webpage. The Scouts and Venturing Crews need you!
Shooting Sports Merit Badge Completion Opportunity
Is your unit’s records full of Scouts who have partials in the Shooting Sports merit badges - Rifle Shooting,
Shotgun Shooting, and/or Archery? Well then we have the perfect day for you and your Scout. On Saturday,
January 17, 2015 the Circle Ten Shooting Sports Committee will be holding a Shooting Sports Merit Badge
Completion Day.
The purpose of this class is to help the Scouts get those last few incomplete requirements that have been hanging
around. We will have merit badge counselors and shooting instructors available during the event to work with
the Scout on open requirements and help the Scouts with their shooting for score requirement.
Scouts will need to sign up for the class, by using the events list on the Circle Ten Shooting Sports Website
(http://www.c10shootingsports.org/EventsList.html) and clicking on the “View Details” link for the merit
badge they wish to complete. This will display a page about the event and contains a link to a form that must
be filled out in order to register for the class. In this form the Scout must list the specific requirements he wants
to get completed at the event. Scouts may work on a reasonable number of requirements during the day, so
that everyone who signs up can get an opportunity to finish up the missing requirements. This is NOT a class
designed to start on the merit badge. The Scout will need to have researched and come prepared to answer any of
the non-shooting requirements with the counselors.
Also transportation to and from Camp TRJ will be the responsibility of the Scout (or troop) along with any food
for meals during your time at the event.

Sons of the American Revolution Eagle Scout Scholarship
Open to all Eagle Scouts who are currently registered in an active unit and have not
reached their 19th birthday during the year of application (the application year is the
calendar year, January 1 to December 31). The year that the Eagle was awarded is not
restricted. College plans do not need to be completed in order to receive the scholarship.
One scholarship award is given to the state winner - $2,500. You may apply more than
one year if you meet the age requirements but no more than $2,500 total may be granted
to any one Eagle Scout by the Texas Society Eagle Scout Contest. The winner of the Texas
Society Contest is forwarded on to the National Society Contest.
Complete applications must be received no later than January 15th.

Dallas Woods & Waters Foundation
The Woods and Waters Foundation (WWF) is an IRS 501(c)(3) charitable
organization which works closely with the Dallas Woods and Waters Club
(DWWC) to establish mutually compatible charitable goals. Their mission is
to ensure the future of the great outdoors through conservation, preserving
wildlife, restoring habitats, and educating youth in the outdoor disciplines
and the preservation of our natural resources. They also strive to develop
charitable contributions and gifts in order to further our mission and to assist
other charitable organizations with similar goals and objectives.
WWF offers $100 donations for assistance on Eagle Scout Service Projects.
They require a written request describing the project and the board will
select one Scout each month to receive $100 for use on their project. WWF only asks that the Scout submit an
article and pictures of the completed project for their use in upcoming issues of the DWWC monthly newsletter.

Schools, Inc., right here in Dallas, Texas. He attended the
University of North Texas where he earned his Doctorate
in Educational Administration. Dr. Seay has been happily
married for thirty years, and is an active member of both
the Kiwanis Club of Pleasant Grove, as well as the Southeast
Dallas Chamber of Commerce. He wishes to let everyone
know about his excitement for the upcoming year serving
the Cimarron district and the boys of Southeast Dallas and
Seagoville.
University of Scouting
University of Scouting, a supplemental training for adult
leaders, will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2015, at 7:00 am
to 5:00 pm at the SMU campus. You may pre-register online
for $30 at Campmaster until December 29, 2014. Checkin and walk-up registration will start at 7:00 am at $40 per
person. Courses offered will be: College of Cub Scouting,
College of Boy Scouting, College of Venturing, College of
Commissioner Science, and College of General Studies.

Also now would be a good time to review your
advancement records through the internet advancement
system at www.circle10.org. Be sure that all your Scouts
have received proper credit for the awards and badges
now even if you are not presenting them until a later date.
You can always go back in the system and print previous
copies of your advancement reports. All your new Cub
Scouts should have earned their Bobcat badge by now.
It would not be a bad idea to present those badges at a
pack ceremony to hold the interest of those young Scouts
(and their parents) for a few more months. Contact our
district’s Advancement Chair Laura Walsh for suggestions
or if you have questions. Also feel free to ask your unit
commissioner or district executive.
Recharter
Time to review our rosters and make sure we are on point
with regard to YPT (Youth Protection Training). Remember
this must be renewed every 2 years and we cannot process
your charter until all registered adults are current. It is
important to get these done on time for advancement and
unit tenure purposes. It is also a major part of every known
JTE (Journey to Excellence)!!!

Congratulations to Pack 70 for having
the highest popcorn sales in West
Park District!
Every fall, thousands of Scouts participate in the annual
popcorn sale to help fund their programs and activities.
This year, Pack 70 held the torch for most sales made, out of
the 72 units that make up our district. Congrats, and thank
you for leading our popcorn fundraiser!
We’d also like to congratulate Pack 84 and Troop 518 for
having the next highest sales in WestPark. They sure make
selling popcorn look easy! Thank you to everyone who
participated in the popcorn fundraiser this year! Remember

urn in your prize orders as soon as possible, and to have all
popcorn money turned in by December 12th!

print out your certificate and either fax or bring it in to the

December Roundtable
At this past roundtable we discussed online recharter for
this next upcoming recharter season. Important things
from this meeting included how to access the online
recharter and the tutorial that is offered once the online
recharter is accessed. All recharter access codes should
have been sent out already. If you have not received your
code, please email [email protected]. We will be
having our next Rountable on December 11th and will be
conducting Recharter for those units that come prepared
and are ready. So please make plans to attend. It will be at
7:00 PM at the Greenville LDS Church. It is very important
that we have 100% of our units represented at this event.
NOTE: In order to access online recharter you must go
to www.circleten.org then scroll all the way down to the
bottom of the page. Under volunteer there will be a link
that says RESOURCES, click it. After you have clicked that
there will be another link called INTERNET RECHARTER,
click it. It will bring you to another page where you can
either take the tutorial or begin your units recharter.

As we wind down from the past year we begin to look
at what we have accomplished in this time. Everyone is
welcome to the annual Mountain Lake District Dinner
on January 9, 2015, 7:00PM at the First United Methodist
Church in Grand Prairie. This is a time to recognize the
leaders in our district who have exemplified the Scouting
Oath and Law as well as have fun! Additionally, we will have
a guest speaker that evening to speak about the Scouting
program.
Friends of Scouting Breakfast
Just a healthy reminder that our annual Mountain Lake
Friends of Scouting Breakfast will be held on January 15,
2015 at 8AM in the Ruthe Jackson Center. We hope to see
many faces from last year’s event, which was a success!

Another Year in the Woods
As 2014 comes to a close, let’s reflect back on the fun
happenings in the Trinity Woods District. Rob Risko and
his team kicked off the year with amazing barbecue for
the Awards Banquet in January. Cub Fun Day and the
Camporee events held in the spring at Clements Scout
Ranch were a blast. And let’s not forget the wet and muddy
but incredibly fun Time Travel Twilight Camp! Cubs and
their families closed out the year with a beautiful weekend
of camping during the Cowboy Up! Cuboree at Trevor
Rees-Jones Scout Camp. To close out the year - an extra
chilly group campout - thanks to Chip Perryman for
organizing that!
We have come a long way this year, adding three new units
to our district. Let’s welcome Ship 11 in Athens, Pack 252
in Kerens, and Pack 256 in Dawson. We are closing out
the year with a positive increase in membership numbers,
a feat that only a handful of districts have been able to
achieve. The district’s success is a result of the hard work
and dedication of volunteers who serve faithfully.
As we look forward to 2015, the district is in great shape
to continue growing and improving, which means a better
program for Scouts and more opportunities to impact the
lives of young men and women through Scouting. We have
a strong team serving the District Committee and we are
building a strong Commissioner Staff to better support
units.
Great things are happening in the Woods!!!! I’m excited to
be a part of it!

Winterfest is the largest gathering in the United States catering to Venturers, Explorers and takes place annually in Gatlinburg, TN. Our event is the
largest scout assembly that specifically targets co-ed youth ages 13-21,

badges, and individual projects like Eagle and Gold Award?
Two Dallas-area preserves are ready to work with
Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Scout troops.
Spring Creek Forest Preserve (www.springcreekforest.org) and
Twelve Hills Nature Center (www.twelvehills.org)
have a long history of working with Scout groups, and can schedule
activities for troops and individual Scouts year-round.
Both parks work closely with the North Texas Master Naturalist
program and offer trained volunteer support
to help coordinate and supervise Scout activities.
