Windows were once called
"wind holes". Fortunately,
today's modern windows do a
good job of preventing
unwanted air flow. However,
closed windows still offer very
little resistance to the flow of
energy. Windows are, in
fact, "energy holes". Compared to the well insulated walls and
roofs of today's homes standard double pane windows allow up to
10 to 15 times more heat energy to flow through them.
So, even though windows make up only about 10% of a home's
10% off all window treatments retrofitted with Somfy

insulated shell, up to half a home's heating and cooling energy
can be
lost through them.
Window Treatments Do Help
Windows coverings control the flow of energy. Window coverings
are like valves--Open the valve and energy comes in or goes out
through the window. Close the valve and energy stays out or
stays in.
Wintertime Energy Flow
Energy flow through windows is like a 2-way street: Solar energy
enters and heat energy exits. The general rule in Winter is to open
the window covering when the amount of solar energy entering
through the uncovered window is greater than the amount of heat
energy being saved by the lowered shade. Hence, open the
coverings when the sun is bright and close at night and on cloudy
days.
Summertime Energy Flow
Energy through windows typically flows in one direction only; into
the
home. Both solar energy and heat energy flow from the outside in,
raiding the temperature and increasing the load on the cooling
system. For optimal energy efficiency in Summer, window
coverings should actually be closed all of the time. However that
sacrafices the reasons we have windows in the first palce: A
reasonable compromise is to close the coverings when direct
sunlight shines on the window.
According to the US Department of Energy, draperies can reduce
heat loss up to approximately 10%. To decrease heat loss even
more, up to 25%, add a cornice at the top, seal them at both sides
and overlap the drapes in the middle.
Installing the proper window treatments and following the energy
flow guidelines manage the enrgy in your home and save you
money.

How to properly
measure your window
for treatments
After deciding what type of
window treatments best
suits your needs and wants the next step is to measure each
window to ensure that you get the right size treatments. Here are
some tips on how to ensure you get the proper measurement.
Measuring Do's and Don'ts:
DO always measure the exact window intended for
treatment
DO always use a 3/4' or 1' steel tape measure.
DO measure the width and write it down; then measure the
height and write it down.
DO measure to the nearest 1/8'.
DO follow all product specific instructions.
DON'T assume a window is square.

DON'T take any deductions. Factory deductions will vary
based on product and mounting selection.
DO use standard measuring procedures; They apply to all
products that fit rectangular windows unless otherwise
specified.
DO pay careful attention to each measurement;
Measurements that pertain to the mounting areas are
critical and must be accurate.
DO realize that specialty shapes and applications require
special measuring procedures. When in doubt, contact
a professional.
Inside Mount or Outside Mount?
Inside (IB) Mount - Shade fits within window frame.
Outside (OB) Mount - Shade overlaps window opening.
Be sure to add the desired overlap amount to each side
and then add to the total ordered width when ordering an
outside mount shade.
End (EB) Mount - Shade is mounted at the top left and right
side corners.
It helps to draw a diagram of the window and write each
measurement beside it in the coordinating spot. Take the drawing
with you while shopping for window treatments or when
discussing your window treatments with an installer or designer.
