Fleas, like other holometabolous insects, have a
four-part life cycle consisting of eggs, larvae, pupae,
and adults. Eggs are shed by the female in the
enviroment . Eggs hatch into larvae in about 3-4
days and feed on organic debris in the environment.
The number of larval instars varies among the
species. Larvae eventually form pupae , which are in
cocoons that are often covered with debris from the
environment (sand, pebbles, etc). The larval and
pupal stages take about 3-4 weeks to complete.
Afterwards, adults hatch from pupae and seek out a
warm-blooded host for blood meals. The primary
hosts for Ctenocephalides felis and C. canis are cats
and dogs, respectively, although other mammals,
including humans, may be fed upon. The primary
hosts for Xenopsylla cheopis are rodents, especially
rats. In North America, plague (Yersinia pestis) is
cycled between X. cheopis and prairie dogs. Humans
are the primary host for Pulex irritans. Source:

Flea & Tick
Protocol
Flea and Tick Protocol 2 - Treatment for Pet
Fleas are more than just annoying! They cause
ittitated skin which leads to infection and can
carry a number of diseases -- including
epidemic typhus and the bubonic plague (to
give you two dramatic examples.) They also can
carry tapeworms from dogs and rodents and
transmit them to their other "hosts," even
humans. In very young pets, like newborn
kittens, a severe flea infestation can actually be
life-threatening.
Day 1: Give 1 Capstar orally. Apply Topical Treatment
(ie Frontline, Vectra, etc) . Make sure topical treatments
are placed directly on the skin and in accordance with
the recommendations for the product.
Day 2: Give 1 Capstar orally.
Day 3: A bath can be given this day if needed.
Treatment of animal should be repeated in 30 days
and is best if treated every 30 days until at least frost.
Treating all 12 months of the year is best. All pets in
house must be treated even if fleas are only seen on
one pet!
Treatment for Home
Flea and Tick Protocol 1 - Treatment for Pet
Day 1: Give 1 Capstar orally. A bath can be given this
day after Capstar is given to wash off any dead fleas
and/or eggs. Bathing washes oils from the animal’s
skin and coat so it is best if you wait 2 days before
applying any topical flea treatments.
Day 2: Give 1 Capstar orally.
Day 3: Topical Treatment (ie Frontline, Vectra, etc).
Make sure topical treatments are placed directly on
the skin and in accordance with the recommendations
for the product.
Treatment of animal should be repeated in 30 days
and is best if treated every 30 days until it is below
freezing for several days in a row. Treatment should be
no less than 3 months in a row. Treating all 12 months
of the year is best. All pets in the house must be
treated even if fleas are only seen on one pet!
We recommend that in addition to treating your pet,
you also treat your house and your yard to help
prevent re-infestation.
We carry several products in our clinics to treat your
house. Some of our top sellers include Knockout ES &
Siphotrol II Premise Spray. These work better than
traditional flea bombs because you are able to treat
the entire square footage and furniture in your home.
These products contain insect growth regulators
which are not generally found in products you buy
over-the-counter. Please follow these steps to insure
that the products work effectively.
1. Vacuum DAILY to get all the eggs or they will hatch
again in 1 month. Not just the rooms that you think
your pet has been in. If possible move and vaccumn
under furniture. You can carry live fleas and eggs on
your clothing from room to room.
2. Remove any birds from the home and cover fish
tanks.
3. Wash any bedding & blankets, especially those
belonging to your pets.
4. Lightly spray your entire home (carpets, hardwood,
laminate and vinyl can all be sprayed). Spray furniture
lightly (follow product directions for checking fabric to
make sure it is color safe) and be sure to spray under
couches, chairs, beds, along baseboards, cabinets and
appliances in the kitchen.
You and your pets should be out of the home at least
long enough to let the product dry (generally 15-20
min).
**Follow the same procedure above and retreat your
home in 7-10 days. If infestation is really bad, your
home may need a third treatment 7-10 days after
second treatment.
Treatment for Yard
We also recommend that you treat your yard. We carry
Siphotrol Yard Spray. This treatment can be hooked to
your garden hose. You need to make sure when
treating your yard that you hit the shady areas (under
trees, bushes, or overgrown areas , as well as under
decks). Fleas like the cooler shady areas to hang
out and reproduce. As with treating
your house, your yard may need
a second treatment.
