BRP charges into 2016 building on the successful launch of the Sea-Doo SPARK as the
industry’s most accessible watercraft and introduces new technologies and designs
that take riding to the next level emphasizing the Sea-Doo legacy of being on the
forefront of innovation.
2016 models will now have the new second-generation iBR (intelligent Brake &
Reverse) system and new, trend leading coloration including three new delicious col-

ors for the 2016 Sea-Doo SPARK.
BRP introduces the new 300-hp Rotax 1630 ACE engine, adds the Ergolock seat
to all RXT and GTX models and many models receiving a redesign of the storage area

I was searching through some good ol’ “boating”
quotes and stumbled across this one above. I read it and
re-read and it continued to resonate with me. Being a
small business owner in a highly fluctuating, seasonal
type of business can be very scary at times. Sometimes
it seems so nerve wracking to try something new or move
forward with an idea. It is usually easier/safer to do as
you always do and go through the motions, however,
– Franklin D. Roosevelt
going through the motions at time can leave you feeling
like you are at anchor.
For some setting sail has different meanings: liberation, freedom, excitement, adventure,
anxiety, hope… the list goes on and on. I feel as though this quote goes hand in hand with
one I have mentioned before that my father always told us growing up “if you change nothing,
nothing changes.” Sitting idle is easy and feels safe, but does it provide you the results you
desire? In many situations for me, it does not.
I have always been a go-getter, a proactive thinker that sometimes falls short to find the correct actions to back my ideas. Now, co-owning a manufacturing business with my family I find
that often the daily challenges and routine of things can far overshadow the ability to think and
act on our forward thinking ideals and goals. To relate to the quote, like we are at anchor and
not sailing, more like we are drifting. The reason this quote feels special to me is because of
the truth in it, the simple analogy of complacency versus action. We all need action.
My request for all of you would be to determine the important, meaningful areas of your life
that you wish you were more proactively pursuing and figure out how to set your own sails to
reach them. We all know time is limited and life is short, so I challenge us all to set sail, not
tie anchor or drift, but set our sails and explore.

Lake Erie, however, isn’t rural Indiana farmland. It is a unique frontage for many Ohio
communities with resorts, parks, marinas,
campgrounds, beaches and more. Its pure
vista draws people to it from bar beyound its
shoreline. Seeing its unbroken horizon
speaks a peaceful moment of escape from
today’s complex life. Is destroying that for a
few megawatts that can come from other
sources a fair trade? Hardly.

Overall, the renewable energy scene is a
treasure chest of grant and loan money. But
the Department of Energy doesn’t have the
greatest track record in picking grant recipients. Witness solar panel maker Solyndra
who, after just 3 years and after its executives
enjoyed huge paychecks, went bankrupt leaving taxpayers holding a $535 million bag! But
grants and loans are just the tip of the blade.
An army of highly-paid lobbyists representing outfits like LEEDCo regularly travel the
halls of Congress pushing for renewal of the
lucrative tax credits that mainly go to wind
and solar outfits.
The International Energy Research Group
has notably reported that for every unit of
energy produced, oil receives 64 cents in federal tax credits. Nuclear power does much
better at $3.14 per unit. But wind and solar
are the tax credit champs garnering a whopping $56 for every unit of wind power produced while solar tops them all at an incredible $775! What business couldn’t hang
around with that kind of hand out?
There are many who say the U.S. should
follow the European example. But here we
have the world’s biggest supply of low-cost
natural gas currently used to generate much
of our electricity at reasonable costs.
Meanwhile, prices for electricity in Europe are
much higher, especially in countries that have
embraced wind power, such as Britain and
Germany.
In the latter, for example, German households pay three times what an American
household pays for electricity. Massive subsidies to renewable energy producers in
Europe have pushed prices up.
There is little doubt the majority of
Americans support the idea of renewable
energy. The question is not whether we
should pursue wind and solar power as an
energy policy, but where specifically wind turbines should be placed – or not. And Lake
Erie should be a not!
Next month, in Part 2 of this “It’s Time to
Ban Windmills in Lake Erie,” we’ll discuss the
direct negative impacts on boating and fishing; the likely violation of the Migratory Birds
Treaty Act and others; dirty secrets the wind
industry doesn’t want you to know; the
planned sale of LEEDCo assets to a
Norwegian buyer; and specific ways boaters
and anglers who believe wind turbines
should not be placed in Lake Erie can
become engaged in stopping the plan.

cliffs of Lakewood, the once spectacular
beauty of America’s inland sea is now pockmarked and ruined by tall towers with huge
spinning turbine blades!
No, that’s not what we see today. But it’s
coming soon to a view near you!
The time has now arrived for boaters,
anglers and anyone who treasures the unbroken beauty of Lake Erie to stand up and say
NO to this pending multi-million dollar
boondoggle.
It’s called the Lake Erie Energy
Development Corporation (LEEDCo). But a
more suitable name might be the Lake Erie
Environmental Destruction Corporation! It’s
plan is to build wind turbines in Lake Erie off
Cleveland and well beyond.
LEEDCo and its founders have been
around for a decade. They’ve steadily been
enriched with taxpayer money from grants
but, fortunately, there hasn’t been enough
money to do any environmental damage.
So why the concern now? Here’s forty million reasons. LEEDCo has just been given $40
million in U.S. Department of Energy grants
which will allow it to move ahead with construction of an offshore wind farm.
Dubbed the Icebreaker Project, it calls for
initially erecting six large wind turbines in the
lake about 8 or so miles northwest of downtown Cleveland. The project is meant to
inspire private developers to erect even more
turbines in the lake, according to LEEDCo.
But now that there’s actually some money
to blight old Erie, it’s time to seriously consider what the end game is in all this. And it’s
no mystery.
First, it’s principals want to build even
more turbines in Lake Erie off counties
including Cuyahoga, Lake and Ashtabula. No
doubt there’s talk of gracing our beautiful
Lake Erie Islands area with spinning windmills, too.
It’s not complicated. In our long-term quest
for more renewable energy in America, windmills have popped up in large numbers on
farm land. For example, just drive up I-65 in
northern Indiana. For many miles, the landscape on either side has been filled with spinning blades. If farmers want to lease out their
land and enjoy looking out their windows at
whirling pinwheels, dead birds and hearing
the incessant groaning sound turbines

Every spring it happens. Larval mayflies burrow up out of Lake Erie bottom
mud, drift slowly to the surface, shed their nymphal skins, and fly. It's a great
time for fish, not so great for boating fishermen, because the presence of billions of mayflies or Canadian soldiers traditionally means a slump in walleye
catches. Many Erie anglers know mayflies when they see them, but know little
about their life cycle and why fishing plummets. The reason is simple. For
openers, they belong to the order Ephemeroptera, which in Greek means
"Lasting but a day." Their life cycle starts when huge mating swarms of male
and female mayflies gather over the lake in late afternoon and early evening,

mate, and once the female drops up to
8,000 eggs onto the water, both sexes die.
The eggs sink to bottom, hatch into tiny
larvae that usually burrow into the bottom
mud and feed on algae, diatoms, and
aquatic tidbits until the tail end of June
and most of the month of July (usual peak)

hungry for the usual weight forward spinners. So, how do you catch them? It isn't
easy, but techniques do exist.
One good method is to use a "Mayfly
rig," which is basically just a spinner, a
bead or two, and a single hook. These are
small rigs, small enough to tempt a walleye that's feeling just a little peckish, and
the top color is usually gold, which looks a
good bit like a golden-brown mayfly coming through the water. Brown is another
fair color, and white isn't bad if neither of
the first two produce. You'll bait with
nightcrawlers, cast out, and retrieve at a
crawl just fast enough to turn the blades.
Because full stuffed walleye won't chase
something moving fast. There are refinements, too.
Three years ago I spent some hours in
early June fishing near West Sister Island
the day after a huge hatch had left
windrows of exoskeletons on the surface
for miles. I cast spinners in all directions,
and caught just one spike. My sensitive rod
was registering an occasional very faint
tug, and I lost a fair number of worms,
before I wised up and tied on a stinger
hook. These can be purchased in almost
any Erie sporting goods store, just a bit of
monofilament with a tiny treble on one
end and a loop on the other that slips over
the hook of your main armament. I added
a nightcrawler to the May fly rig hook and
hooked its trailing end with the little treble. That did it. I started striking at ANY
change in movement, a tiny tug, a slight bit
of extra pressure, anything, and filled a
limit in less than an hour. They weren't
hungry, but often interested enough to at
least follow the rig and nip at the crawler.
The stinger took every fish, mostly in just
their lip.
Stingers can make a big difference, but
there are yet other refinements that can
save the day. Since mayflies prefer mud,
there will be fewer of them in areas with
rocky bottoms, and therefore the fish find
less food in such places. So, you might
concentrate your fishing in such areas,
usually near reefs like NNE of Niagara
Reef, near Round Reef, Crib, Little Pickerel,
and Cone. The fish will be hungrier there.
Try adding a rubber corelock sinker to your
line a foot or more above the mayfly rig, a
half ounce at least. The problem with casting light little mayfly rigs is that they zip up
through the fish producing zone too fast,
giving only a fish or two (or none) a look.
The sinker and a slow retrieve keeps it in
the money zone longer.
What is the money zone? During mayfly
hatches and immediately after, it's going to
be nearer the surface than you might
expect. On cloudy days particularly, they'll
hold high, watching below to spot rising
insects. I've actually seen a fish strike more
than once when a hatch was on. If you get
caught out there without stinger hooks, try
adding just an inch or so of nightcrawler to
your hook to give walleye a smaller target,
and again, strike at any difference during
your retrieve. Watch the weather before
you make a trip, too. Sometimes, it can't
be done because you've planned a Lake
Erie visit days or weeks ahead, but if possible pick a day when it's cloudy and windy

enough to produce a good walleye chop.
High holding fish are less spooky on such
days, and less likely to flush in all directions when a boat idles past.
Finally, if nothing else works, go to Plan
B, which is trolling. Trolling, as serious
walleye anglers know, keeps the baits at
proper depth and speed all of the time,
instead of just part, which is the situation
for casters. And if you troll long enough,
through multiple pods of fish, you're likely

Use spoons, small crankbaits, minnow imitators like Rapalas, fish a few deep, but
most shallow, troll fairly fast to trigger
strikes, and use planer boards to get offerings well out to either side of the boat. The
law of averages demands that you'll catch
at least a few while trolling, even if they're
loaded to the gills with mayflies.

Be a part of the 2016 I-LYA Regatta events season

Summer is here, the boats are splashed
and water is perfect… the 2016 boating
season is well underway. This year we celebrate the 123rd Annual Sail Regatta, the
41st Power Boat Regatta, the 61st Junior
Sail Regatta as well I-LYA’s 131st birthday!
This is an exciting year for Lady Sharon and
I as well as the rest of Team 2016. Every year,
the Commodore wants to leave the organization just a little better than the last and we
are no exception to that rule. Team 2016 has
been working hard all through the winter to
find ways to deliver improved programs
regardless of sail or power and I believe that
our folks have done just that.
The Senior Sail event starts off with the
Cleveland Deepwater competitors arriving
on Thursday August 4th as does the rest of
the I-LYA Fleet. I-LYA offers races for most
competitors from PHRF / JAM, One Design
Keels, One Design Centerboards to Cruising
Class teams. There are four days of world
class racing with social activities each night
as well as daily awards and dinners. This
year the regatta runs from August 4th to
August 7th. If you haven’t been before, it
really is a must see event.
It’s hard to believe that there are a lot of
Clubs that don’t understand the reach and
magnitude of the I-LYA junior sail program.
The Yacht and Sailing Clubs that make up the
I-LYA Junior Sailors, sail in US SAILING Area E
and are from as far south as the Columbus
and Cincinnati, OH area - to as far north as the
Detroit area and cover from Erie, PA to the
east and Indianapolis to the west. This year’s
Junior Bay Week Regatta starts on July 17th
and runs through July 21st. We look forward to
welcoming back our junior sailors and their
families from previous years and to meeting
our new participants and families in July. This
year, the regatta is expected to have over 150

Sunday, August 14th. Once again, we’ll have
four full days of boating contests and fun
ashore at Put-in-Bay! On shore activities offer
fun for all. There will be volleyball, golf, softball, hot dog roast, putt-putt golf, steak &
chicken roast, a pub crawl, and a rum party!
Skippers can compete for flags and bragging
rights in docking, chicane, flying mile, and
predicted log contests. Attendees can compete in the inflatable dinghy races, cardboard
boat races, and weather predicting. Once
again, flags will be awarded in these categories. Our Junior Powerboat Regatta, which
runs concurrent with the Senior Powerboat
Regatta, is structured with activities for all
