April - Fagowees Ski Club
A Message From Our President--A Combined Winner!
(April Fool’s, but he did well in the SuperG for a change!)
It’s almost, finally the end of ski season. Of course there will be
the few, the brave, the crazy — okay the Fagowees type that will
ski as long and as late into the spring as one can ski. Can you say
Tuckerman’s? It’s been a good season of cold snow and a very
successful race season-especially for my hero Mike K-the big
dupa who after 33 years won his second combined trophy.
Congrats big guy-love ya. But the season will soon end.
As the season changes, our thoughts go to other sporting activities other then snow skiing. To
help the switchover, your club is helping you. So, first you need to join us at the Banff Film
Festival. There will be a couple of weekends when you will be able to learn how to row a racing
scull. Join the WRRA on the water for one of our Learn to Row sessions – April 2 or 3, April 9 or
10, or April 16 or 17. Then you need to sign up for Whirly Ball Jiffi on May 13 and the theater
event with Pat M on May 14th. Also, the Bike Scavenger Hunt has a new starting location: Pat’s
& Mike’s on the east side and a new date-May 21st. Come on out and learn the east side from the
top of a bike... An unofficial Fagowees event (also on the east side) is the Hesser Street Fair
during the same May 20th weekend.
It is also time to get ready for Thursday golf nights as well as Monday and Wednesday bike
nights. Of course there are & will be Happy Hours.
I don’t know how they did it but the Anniversary Party on Friday June 17th will have all of the
fun stuff and more with a lower price- $11.00 lower. How could you not go! Be one of the first
75 sign-ups to get the lowest price. Because all of this information is inside in detail, you do not
have to read any more, just flip the page and go hunting for your next adventure.
Okay, since you did not flip the page, you get a reminder to vote at the first meeting in April. You
also get the sales pitch to step up and become a trip leader. We want and need some people to
step up and run a trip. We have been providing you with what amounts to nonstop fun, so do
not let the fun stop. Do your bit to help out.
Also, as we form a new board this spring, first we elect a bunch of people to the board, then in
May, the president, with trustees’ approval, appoints a second set of board members. These
board members are as important as the elected ones. All you need to do is read through the
following list, approach the president and offer a little bit of time and effort. Bring your energy
and talent to make us even stronger as a club. Appointed positions available are: CMSC/
International Rep, Merchandise Chair, Publicity Chair,
Race Chair, Happening Editor and Website. With over 300
members we should be able to fill these open positions
with great ease. Do your part and help keep this club
rolling along.
So, sadly pack up those skis for summer storage. Look
ahead to another fun- filled spring and summer. And start
prepping the bike, hiking boots, kayak, golf clubs, and
climbing gear.
BOFA-Breath of Fresh Air.

THE APRIL FOOL’S 2011 EDITION of THE HAPPENING -- THERE WILL BE NO FAGOWEE OF THE MONTH
(Ha Ha... A real knee slapper)
As a Trustee, I am one of several people who choose the Fagowee of the Month, and write the article.
I consider it one of the most important Trustee functions. If you have been the FOM, you know it’s an
honor, and a fun distinction to have. If you have written the article, you know it’s hard to do at times. You
are busy; you’ve run out of ideas; the editor has a deadline; you have writer’s block!!! Whew!
The flip side of that coin is that it is fun getting background material on the person you chose. I enjoy
rehashing their exploits and adventures. It’s a challenge to keep their identity secret until the issue comes
out. I get to see a friend in a new light, and so do all of you.
That is why it’s a real pleasure to write about this month’s FOM. Donna B is a newer member who
exhibits the best qualities of the Fagowees. She is energetic, friendly, clever, and charming. Donna brings all of her many talents and jumps right in with
enthusiasm to spare. She is there for the fun and for the responsibility too. Coming all the way from Newbury Ohio to meetings and events earns
Donna lots of frequent flyer miles. Also it’s likely the reason she got the nickname of “Downtown” Donna B.
I’ve heard her described as a “Renaissance Woman”. The reports were so glowing that I did some checking. Come to find out that she is!! Classically
trained on the Harpsichord, Avid astronomer with a comet named for her, and second youngest woman to swim the English Channel. Hard to believe
huh? I’ve heard rumors that she has ties to a top secret Dept of Energy project.
That she skydives with the “Flying Elvis” and occasionally hangs out with Charlie Sheen (unconfirmed of course.) I first became acquainted with
Donna about a year ago on the Jay Peak trip. We had a little fun in the lounge the night the Fagowees took the place over. If that didn’t scare her off,
then you know she has a bit of a wild side. In fact since then, she has attended every possible event in recent memory.
You’ve seen her at the Clambake, Party 2 Die 4, weekly bicycling and P2P. She’s been on the wine crawl and is a
regular on pinochle night. It might be easier to list what she hasn’t done. When she joined the club, Donna had not skied
much since High School. She dusted off her skills, bought new gear, took a women’s ski class locally, and now is at the
front of the bus on nearly every trip. She has been the co-leader on the 2011 Seven Springs trip, and would drive if
Sam would let her. Oh! By the way as this issue goes to print she is jetting away on the Aspen Bash. (It is a BASH!!
Cleveland and DC chapters in attendance. Cleveland still Kicks ASS!!!)
Most regular meetings, Donna can be found set up in the back of the Ampol Hall, where she sells Fagowee Merchandise. She does a lot of the embroidery herself, and offers many great values on club apparel. Stop by to browse and
buy some of her wares. Be sure to congratulate her as well. Great job Donna, April 2011 Fagowee of the Month.

Updates From Your Race Chairs (Tedders, Caryn & Tommy Gun):
HELLOOOOO ski race fans and welcome to the third edition of your Fagowees race report. Coming to you LIVE from a
PC near you. What a race year we have been having and OOOH THE FUN. If you haven’t been coming out to ski this
year and watch your favorite HACKS trying to race down the slopes in tight spandex, well MAYBE YOU SHOULD. On
the docket this issue is Snow Trails, Boston Mills and our biggest race of the year, BRISTOL COMBINED & a sprinkling
of Swain 2!! So get yourself some coffee cuz’ its time to RIP!!
Snow Trails: We were welcomed to a beautiful day of skiing at Snow Trails on Saturday morning. Tommy Gun arrived
bright and early with the Peter and Lainey K. and pulled into the far parking lot where everyone was parking for the big
TAIL GATE party (more on that later). Group 1 was getting ready and bibs were being picked up by your lovely race chair
Caryn D. While getting ready, apparently there was a BET being made within the race chair ranks. Seems Tedders and
Caryn were gonna determine who drove home that night by who won on the race hill. Yes, read into that, someone gets
to party and the other gets to drive back home. Ted decided was not fair to go mano-a-mano against Caryn and spotted
her 3.5 seconds. Group 1 had a nice course prepared by our very own Harry B. Excellent job Harry. Group 2 was gonna
be some fun. . Tommy Gun was running coats down for Group 2 and when he turned around, he said… HEY, why are
they sending the pace setters before the “B” women?
WAIT, holy smokes, that is Caryn... She RIPPED an incredible
time on run 1... As did Tedders, BUT right now, Caryn beat him... So he has to make up close to 4 seconds on run 2.
Well, that didn’t happen, so Tommy Gun looked right at Tedders and said, “Take off your shin guards, you are not worthy
of them.” Give them to Caryn who took a few to the knee. We worked Group 3, helping with course reading and how to
approach the course. As racers were going MACH LOONEY, others were out in the parking lot. There was Snow-Baller
pallooza going on. Lots of good partying with BIG SPEAKERS and just a little skiing by a few. It was awesome having
the boarders out today, and I do have to say the Michigan clan was in full snowboard FORM. Sorry for not getting over
there in time to watch. I was pallooza’in a little too much in the parking lot. I hear the Bassetts were neck and neck in
their times... Seems to me there is gonna be a lot riding on Boston Mills for this family of RACERS!!
At awards we found out Caryn D. got her 2nd strike and is moving up to “A” women. Fagowees won Division 1 with 454
points to Warren’s 139 points. Snowballers took Division 2 with 228 points.
Favorite quote of the weekend from Cole (age 10) at Snowtrails: “Can
get a snack around here that isn’t all jacked up with alcohol?”
a
brotha’
Time to go home and get some sleep, cuz’ Sunday is Boston Mills.
Boston Mills: So day 2 arrives and we are slowly getting ready for another day of racing. A bunch of old familiar faces are
getting ready to race. As usual, a lot of old farts come outta the woodwork to race the Mills. You could smell the aroma
of Ben Gay in the air. The parking lot is jammed packed again with round 2 of Snow-Baller Palloooza. The Tail Gaters are
already starting to get ready while most are trying to get their speed suits on. Yeah, Saturday’s tail gate eating frenzy is
not helping with getting the speed suit on. A lot of racers today are here from all around CMSC. The Group 1 course is
built and people are slipping. Racing today was AWESOME. Caryn D. decided to crash twice on her 1st run and on the
2nd crash decided she didn’t need her skis anymore. Welcome to group 1 Caryn, Tommy Gun was informed he needed to
be in GOOD SPIRITS by the time Group 4 snowboarders took off. Group 1, 2 and 3 go off without a hitch as the Tail
Gaters are going STRONG. The weather cooperated today. WARM and on again off again sun. Mostly OFF!! Everyone
gets a braut or two from the Ballers and it is time for Group 4 snowboard racing. Tommy Gun lines up for our Annual
Group 4 Cartwheel-Palloooooza. See Tommy’s whole purpose is to see how many snow boarders he can get to do
CARTWHEELS when they come through the finish line... With lots of prodding and lots of fan support we were able to get
six CARTWHEELS from the snowboarders. Even kids participated. It took beer to get one of the Bassetts to cartwheel.
Watching the kids today was awesome. We are ALL gonna be in a
lot of trouble when these little tikes get into the adult program.
FAAAAAST !! So onto the bar and awards. We had another BUMP
this weekend, Gary K. is now in AVM. Additional strikes go to Dave
M. BBVM & Jason P. CCM. We did another great job of collecting
points. We took Division 1 with 499 points with Warren’s 92. In
Division 2 the Snowballers took 1st place with 218 points.
Bristol Combined: This is the MACK DADDY of racing people. The
one and only time we have a Super-G course provided to us so that
we can see how stupid fast we can go. Racers are up SUPER
EARLY for this one... Group1 & 2 do the Super-G together. Some
fast Fagowees are putting on their race suits. Wait a minute, who is
that girl over there putting on a PINK SPEED SUIT? WHAT?, Renee
S. decided to get a new suit for the occasion and walk the isle... Caryn D. also is sporting a speed suit. This is gonna be
a nice view for us AM. AND if you know Renee, yeah everything matched. Pink Coat and Pink Fingernails. We did find
out her PINK HELMET didn’t come in yet. Haha... I did find out that Mike K. had a GPS put in his pocket to note his
speed down the course. Our own race chair Tedders decided to see if he could be Kup’s speed of 43+ mph. We found out
later Tedders hit 44+mph. NICE !! After a SUPER LONG day and Group 3 not getting in until 6pm, people rushed to dinner
so they can get to the awards ceremony. I decided we needed to bring a couch from the hotel into the awards ceremony.
A guy hasta be comfy with his three wives. So Andy S. and I carried it into the awards so a few of us could relax at the
Inn. Awards go off and then we do the “no talent contest”. Renee S., Shelli S and I do our “YO YO YO YOGA” skit.
Continental took the show with their version of The Lollypop Guild from the Wizard of Oz. It was about the CMSC guild.
We could barely breathe it was so funny. Special Award was handed out on Saturday night to our Race Chair Tedders and
Alex M. Alex thought they were going to do a reset between run 1 and run 2 in the GS. So he went in and got himself a
burger and fries to eat. He missed his start for run 2 of the GS. WHOOOOPS. Well, Tedders got an award for not being a
good race chair.
So here we go to Sunday Slalom racing. A lot of DQ’s today. I always say, it ain’t over until Sunday’s slalom RUN 2, cuz’
there is always good crashes and lots of ‘em. Bristol puts a challenging course for all. So
here are the Fagowees who took Combined Overall, CONGRAT’S:
AAW
AVM
CCVM
CCW
CCM
Abie McLaughlin
Mike Kupiac
Brian Korfhage
Rita Montorsi
Andy Tulenko
FYI, at the awards our presenter asked if anyone in the room was younger than 33 years. A
rather large set of hands went up. It seems the last time Mike K. won combined was in 1978.
YEAH 33 years ago. WOW. Congrats go to Mike K. and all our overall winners. Also at
awards Tahler M. got his virgin hardware and had is SOAKED with BEER (as is our TRADITION). Way to go Tahler.
Strikes - Saturday Super GS (CCVM - Brian K # 1, CCM - Andy T # 2 - Bump to BM). Saturday GS (CCVM - Brian K
#2 - Bump to BVM, BVM - Mike W #1, BBM - Andy S #1).
Sunday - Slalom CCM - Andy T - #3, BVM - Mike W #2 - Bump to AVM.
Bristol Division winners:
Division 1 winner was FAGOWEES with 1,075 points, 2nd place Warren with 370
Division 2 winner was HiRise with 415 points and Continental with 352 points.
An attempt was made to steal our trophy. Unsuccessfully I might ADD. Janet S., next time you need a bigger blocker
than Beth S. to keep me from catching you, but nice try. And HiRise kept watch on their trophy.
Swain 2: This race chair was not able to make it to Swain 2... So Caryn gave me the rundown on the weekend. It would
appear there were not casualties at the bar like Swain 1. It rained on Saturday all day but with Swain they always find a
way to get us racing. Swain iced up the race course and ran in reverse order. Which means A LOT of Group1 could stay
out at the bar REAL LATE with no worries!! Good racing by Tedders getting his 1st strike giving a warning to Andy S. and
company about his desire to move to BBM. Fagowees won Division 1 275 points vs. Warren’s 78 on Saturday. Sunday
the cattle gates came out and it was a fun day in powder racing with ice underneath... Andy decided to serve notice to
Tedders that he should stay in BM with a lashing in the cattle gates taking Bracket C... Sunday John S apparently decided
to groom the finish line with his body. Not sure I know what that means, but ask John S. Kids were able to challenge any
adult to race. We had an epic battle of the red heads with Debbie B. going against Allie. I don’t know the outcome, but I
wouldn’t want to go up against Allie, that 7- year old girl can FLY and she
knows no mercy on us old folks. CMSC Prez. Dale W. took on Stevie R.
Prez.and won, but he was beatin’ on the 1st run. Some awesome
costumes I hear, shout out to the PEEPS who were running around Yvonne, Rita, Wes, Brian, Renae & Shelli.
Another year of racing in the books, I know you are gonna miss my
articles and the lack of sentence structure, but we have the racers
banquet and of course our Anniversary Party where we announce some
racer awards. So stay tuned. Same BAT TIME, same BAT CHANNEL!!
Your partners in crime,
Tommy Gun, Ted and Caryn
