1. Introduce the CTE lesson.
You are a scrub tech working on call at
Sabin Schellenberg Health Sciences
Hospital. A patient was in a bad car
accident and has fractured his leg. A
surgical procedure to repair the
fracture has been scheduled for 6
o’clock.
What time do you arrive at the
hospital?
This scenario will be on posted on the
powerpoint that is used as a daily “STAT” or
warm up activity.
History of Military Time: To avoid confusion
the military must communicate with bases
and personnel located in other time zones.
They use the time in Greenwich, England,
which is commonly called, Greenwich Mean
Time (GMT).
Write down ideas about how you
arrived at your decision.
2. Assess students’ math awareness as it
relates to the CTE lesson.
Conversation about how they came to the
conclusion.
Military time is used to AVOID mistakes in
healthcare. If a.m. or p.m. is omitted or
misread, than an error of 12 hours is made.

As it relates to math this is the way to set up
an equation. The idea is the student can write
an equation to represent or model a real life
situation. Most students will be able to do the
example in their heads.

To convert the times to the 24 hour clock do
these calculations for the afternoon times.
1530-2400 Eve Shift
Add the afternoon times to 1200.
2330-0800 Night Shift
1200 + 0400= 1600

Give students 10-15 minutes to work through
worksheet.
Go over answers on the worksheet and
address any questions students have. Ask,

Question:
Maria is working in the hospital. When taking
vital signs, she discovers the patient has a
temperature. When she checks the orders,
she finds the physician has ordered Tylenol
to be given every four hours. Maria notes it is
8:30 p.m. and the last dose was given to the
patient was charted at 1730 hours. Maria
gives the patient 2 tablets and charts the time
given at 2130.
First: Write an equation that converts
standard time into military time.
This question will be posted the
next day for the Stat (warm up).
Answer to question:
Figure out the time in 24 hour times.
1200+830=X
X= 2030
Current time in problem was 2030
Last dose was given at 1730
So……..2030-1730= 0300 hours

This method begins at midnight, or 0000 hour, and runs consecutively until 2359. This method uses a special two‐digit system so a.m. and p.m. are not needed. Military time is used to eliminate the confusion regarding time of day for medical records. The following chart shows the comparison between Standard and Military time.
