The Thabor mountain range marks the limit between the Northern Alps
(Savoie) and the Southern Alps (Hautes-Alpes) and where all the components
of the environment are presented : moorland, grass, scree, rocks, but also
humid areas and around 30 lakes situated at over 2000m altitude. This alpine
environment has an incredible wealth of wild flowers and wildlife (black and
red grouse, rock partridge, chamois or mountain goats) and provides the
walker with an exceptional nature reserve.
The Thabor mountain range, with it`s remarkable geological history, is full
of natural treasures which need protecting. On the 26th of December 2000
it was made a classified site. These sites are classified by their outstanding
characteristics and are protected and their evolution monitered, at a national
level. Several years later the `Savoyards` mountain range became the 37th
Natura 2000* site due to it`s rich heritage.
The Thabor mountain range is a magnificent area to discover wildlife. It needs
your respect ! In winter, the snow conditions and weather can change quickly.
Make enquiries before you leave and inform the local tourist office of your
itinery.

TRAFFIC CIRCULATION/
PARKING
The areas around the residences are
pedestrian only zones (1500, 1800,
1850, 1900), we would be grateful
if you would park your vehicle in
the large car parks that are situated
within 5 minutes walking distance
from the residences (see plans). To
improve the car park, a new parking
of about sixty places for cars and
bus (Grange Bernard) was fitted
out in 2km of the station, it will be
placed under video surveillance and
on Saturdays shuttles will circulate
between this parking and the station
1800 till 10.00pm. Please do not leave
your vehicle unattended or parked
in places reserved for handicapped
drivers, in front of the fire hydrants
or the waste disposal/recycling bins.

3 ELECTRONIC INFORMATION
BOARDS
(at the departures of the Roi,
Grandes Drozes and Jeux chairlifts)
are continually updated with the
latest information concerning the
opening and closure of the ski
slopes. Following heavy snowfall
and extreme weather the ski lift
staff and ski patrol do everything
possible to secure the ski area
(avalanche blasting, marking out
the slopes) to enable you to ski
in the best conditions.
NIGHT SKIING
Every Monday
(during the school holidays) and
Wednesday (all season), ski for an
extra 1h30mins after theclosure of
the slopes using the Pré Aynard
chairlift and your days ski pass.

SKI INSURANCE
Before you arrive make sure that
your insurance covers skiing. Ski
insurance is available at any of the
sales points when you purchase your
ski pass: 2.80€/person/day. The
cost of a rescue on the ski slopes
can vary between 250 € and 2 000
€ for a rescue by helicopter. Further
information is available at any of the
sales points.
THE SKI LIFTS AND
ONLINE SALES
If this is your first visit to Valmeinier
you will be asked for a 2 € deposit for
the electronic ski pass which is
automatically detected when you
pass through the turn style (place it in
your left pocket without any metallic
objects, mobile phone, keys etc).
When you have finished skiing you
can return your ski pass, provided

USEFUL INFORMATION
Make sure your children are dressed
warmly even in good weather. It is
strongly recommended that your
child wears a helmet. For the first
couple of days please collect your
child 5 to 10 minutes before the end
of the lesson.
Don’t over estimate the progress
of your child, take your child skiing
on slopes that correspond to his or
her ability. Your child’s instructor is
happy to advise you on which ski
slopes are suitable.
MEDALS
Medals are included in the children’s
group lessons.

of marker)
3. Give a brief description of the state and injury
of the person (sex, number,…)
4. Indicate if possible the circumstances of the
accident (where, when, how,…)

eep calm despite the stress, it is an
advantage for the injured person
PROTECTION
Babies: should be well protected
from the cold and sun (warm clothes,
sunglasses, sun cream…). Don’t
forget gloves, scarf and hat. For
young skiers don’t overdress them,
skiing is a sport and they will sweat
and use up energy. Don’t forget
to put a small snack incase they’re
hungry, sun cream and lip salve in
their pocket.
TRAVELLING BY CAR
In the mountains control your speed
and don’t drive too fast. Keep a
watch on your children in case they
are ill due to the change in altitude
and the bends in the road. Keep the
car ventilated.
WALKS, SKIING…
Be aware that walking with your
child requires a physical effort and
therefore you will not feel the cold
at the same rate as your child who is
not moving. It is therefore important
that your child is well covered and
to check regularly that he isn’t cold.
Shorten your walk if your child is
unhappy.

There are 2 structures at Valmeinier
1800 which are adapted to each age
group.
To ensure the smooth running
of your child’s holiday, please

children are not used to the
snow and winter sports. They
can be tired and irritated in
this environment. Be patient
and take into consi­deration
that it’s a full day with lots of
new things !

IDEAS FOR WALKS
Here are a few ideas. Most of the walks are signposted but where
they are not the directions and maps provided will allow you
to find your way easily. For your own safety, take snowshoeswith
you in case you run into deep snow. The Tourist Office declines
liability in the event of an accident.
WALK BETWEEN 1800
ET 1500 - D1
Take the road leading to Valmeinier
1500 for 2.5 km and take the left
turn after the big car park, take the
next right turn to Grange Bernard
afterwhich you drop down into the
hamlet of La Combaz, when you
reach the main road which links 1800
and 1500 you have 2 options:
• The Mont Thabor Farm option:
follow the main road downhill for
approx. 300 m.
European number : 112
• The Valmeinier 1500 option:
cross the main road and continue
down the old road (no longer
accessible to cars) that takes you
down to Valmeinier 1500. You can
either continue down the road
turning right at the bar «La Taverne»
or continue uphill via «Ville Dessus».
STARTING
FROM VALMEINIER 1500 -
Shortcut to 1800 (1 hour 15 mins):
Take the steps between the
«Brezain» restaurant and the
climbing wall. When you join the
road turn right and when you reach
the junction follow the road downhill
until you reach a road which
climbs to your left and is closed to
vehicles. When you arrive at the «La
Combaz» you can catch the free bus
(timetable page 6 - 7) to Valmeinier
1800.

front of the tourist office.
STARTING FROM THE
«PLAN PERINE»
COVERED PARK AT 1500
- D3
From 1800, take the ski bus
(bus stop Plan Perrine)
Walks to Mélèzes (1 hour 30)
and Combes (2 hours).
Returning by the same path and
accessible with pushchairs. Follow
the sign posted tarmac road from
one village to the other.
The «Piste du Château»
(2 hours 30).
Return by the same path. Follow
the forest track which leaves at
the top of the car park until you
reach the barrier preventing further
access, approx. 3km.
Perine and at Valmeinier 1500 take
the Arméra chairlift (free).
The ‘Trois Croix’ track (3 hours).
Follow the track that descends an into
area made up of clearings and rising
towards denser forest to reach Pierre
Brune. After crossing the Fontaine
Froide stream, the track rises steeply
before arriving at the «Trois Croix» and
the «Notre Dame de la Vie» chapel with
a view point and orientation table.
To return follow the track that rises
back into the forest (20 mins) before
descending to Les Frasses, Le Tour
and finally Arméra résidence.
Caution, this track is used by dog
sleds, please stand aside whenever
you meet one.
