Trained as a K-12 special education teacher, Jane focused on teaching techniques that are particularly well suited for gifted students. This required a deep understanding of learning and memory, which led Jane to work at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, where she served as the Education Manager of the DNA Learning Center under James D. Watson, Nobel Laureate, during the early days of the Human Genome Project. This unique opportunity afforded her access to molecular biologists as she studied telomerase (aging) using worms, as well as learning and memory using flies (Tim Tully). Jane incorporates this profound knowledge and experience into curricula for camps and schools located on Long Island, NYC, and California. Future Scientist Camp This summer, give your son or daughter the gift of becoming a trained scientist, ready to take on the challenges of the ˘ ˘ ˘ ˘ science Nature Program 21st century. Expand your child’s critical and creative thinking skills through game design, robotics, rocketry, forensics, chemistry, and genetic engineering. Students will be grouped according to age and interests to pursue their passions in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Our teachers hold degrees in molecular biology, computer science, and special education, and have taught in public and private schools, and worked at NYU and Cold Spring Harbor laboratories. Students may attend for one week or plan longer experiments over the two-week period as they prepare for Brookhaven Lab contests, Math Olympiads, Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF), First Lego League tournaments, or just to have fun. Activities include: • Restriction analysis experiment • Bacterial transformation experiment • Elements and compounds experiment • Model organisms experiments with fruit flies, yeast, mice, and planaria • Rocketry and robotics • CO2 dragsters and solar powered cars • Earthquake-resistant building design Dates: June 30 - July 3, July 7 - 11 Ages Grades K - 9 Time: 9 am - 3 pm Course Fee: $695 per week, $560 for shorter week of June 30 - July 3 Creatures of the Earth Can you imagine what the earth looked like millions of years ago when odd looking creatures roamed our planet? In this fun-filled camp, children will explore amazing creatures, ranging from tiny living microscopic squirmy creatures to mammoth beasts. We will investigate creatures that have survived millions of years, embark on an adventure to find them, learn why they live where they do, why they eat what they do, and explore their worlds. Would you like to meet the strangest animals? Even if they are really weird looking with 3 eyes, 4 heads, 100 legs, or weigh over one thousand pounds? Join us on this exciting adventure through the world of rare animals. Dates: June 30 - July 3 Ages: 5 - 9 years old Time: 9 am - 3 pm Course Fee: $365 12 13 Through observation and inquiry, students explore the environment by visiting nature trails. Our journey begins with an exploration of the parts of a tree and the role each part plays in a tree’s life cycle. After observing patterns in nature, students create their own design project that reinforces the lessons learned. For example, students go on a bird watching walk and use binoculars to observe birds closely. They investigate artifacts like feathers, feet, and skulls to learn how different birds have adapted to thrive in their special niches. A hands-on art project helps reinforce this avian adventure. Through scientific observation and physical exploration, students investigate the nature of seeds, their role in the cycle of life, and the interesting ways they adapt, survive, and thrive in their environment. Students dissect seeds and then create their own seed mosaic. They learn about bee life-cycles and the role bees play in pollination, practice the art of bee communication, and observe how honey and beeswax are harvested. Students then use real beeswax to create a mixed-media art project. They also observe how leaves, needles, branches, ˘ ˘ ˘ science and buds grow in distinct and recognizable arrangements, and how petals and other flower parts are arranged just so. In addition, students investigate the world of plants by learning to recognize and categorize different patterns found in nature, and then make a pattern-inspired craft. Experienced educators provide nurturing support throughout this class, engaging kids in discussions and supervising hands-on activities that form more meaningful connections to the environment. Dates: July 7 - 11 Ages: 7 - 11 years old Time: 9 am - 3 pm Course Fee: $450 Mind Benders Durinig this exciting week-long session, we study how the mind works and how our brains perceive things by memory or learned behavior. We learn how we can fool our brains to see things that are not there as well as trick our other senses. We learn how we can fool our taste buds and noses to smell things differently than what they actually are. We can even feel things that aren’t really there just by confusing our brain. Want to learn how? People will think you are a magician through this exciting world of optical illusions and mind bending science experiments. Could this be real, or just be a figment of your imagination? Come see for yourself! Dates: July 7 - 11 Ages: 5 - 9 years old Time: 9 am - 3 pm Course Fee: $450 Wildlife Safari Are you ready to go wild? Grab your gear we’re going on a Wildlife Safari! Join us for a journey into the heart of the animal kingdom as we dissect an owl pellet, build a crocodile, construct a working electric ray, and discover the life cycle of a frog. Encounter some dangerous creatures too. Could you survive an encounter with one of these “deadly” beasts? Swim with the sharks. Design a snake and a heat seeking croc-thermometer, then we discover if these creatures are really dangerous… or just misunderstood “outlaws.” Embark on an exciting animal adventure and uncover what makes each group of vertibrates wild! Dates: June 23 - 27 Ages: 5 - 9 years old Time: 9 am - 3 pm Course Fee: $450 the rockets are constructed, there will be a huge blast off, sending them on a journey to the outer reaches of our universe. Embark on a flight of fancy where the sky is the limit, as we master skyward motion with science and flying machines of all sorts, shapes, and sizes. Come join us for a week of blasting fun! Dates: July 28 - Aug 1 Ages: 7 - 11 years old Time: 9 am - 3 pm Course Fee: $450 Long Lost Treasures From the deepest oceans to the tombs of Egypt, we will explore long lost sunken treasures of the sea, ship disappearances, rare minerals, amazing shells, unique gemstones, and fossils from our past. Students will explore some very amazing archeological finds, from the Rosetta stone, to ecavating a mummy, to unlocking other strange natural wonders such as the moving stones of Death Valley (mysterious rocks that weigh hundreds of pounds and move seemingly without any logical explanation). We will also explore the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, which have amazed people throughout Rockets, Rockets and Rockets In this exciting session, children build rockets, from the simplest craft to highly complex projectiles, immersing themselves in a soaring science spectacular. We will build hydro rockets, blasting rockets, air pressure rockets, chemical rockets, launch a space shuttle, and more. Every day, after ˘ 14 15 history. We will also investigate some rare crop formations found throughout the world. Come join us on this fun-filled week and explore the most amazing scientific phenomenon of all time, some explained, and some unsolved. You will surely be amazed as we delve into this fascinating journey of exploration and discovery.
