Pauline Flannigan Culver

2013, at Lawrence Funeral Home with Bro. Shane
Williams officiating.
Burial was in Moulton

Mrs. Culver died Saturday March 23. She was
born on Sept. 17, 1928, in
Lawrence County to Albert Flannigan and Audie
Cagle Flannigan. Mrs.
Culver was a homemaker.
She loved Randy Travis,
flowers, shopping and getting her nails done. But
most of all, she enjoyed
spending time with her
family.
She was preceded in
death by her husband, Junior “Coon” Culver, and
one son, James Lee Culver.
Survivors include one
son, Roger Dale Culver
(Bonita) of Moulton; a
daugher-in-law,
Joyce
Culver of Moulton; two
brothers, Doc Flannigan
and David Flannigan; and
four sisters, Eloise Sims,
Lorene Hood, Marlene
Little, and Shirley Vess;
four grandchildren; eight
grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren.

Mrs. Dutton died Tuesday, March 19, at NHC
Healthcare of Moulton.
She was born on Aug. 5,
1918, in Lawrence County.
Mrs. Dutton worked at
Lawrence Corporation in
Moulton for many years.
She was a member of
Union Grove Methodist
Church.
She was devoted to her
family and friends and
loved to cook, sew, quilt
and garden.
She was preceded in
death by her parents, William Alma Howell and
Nellie McCleskey Howell; her stepmother, Addie
Crow Howell; husband,
Reason Obed Dutton; and
a daughter, Mary Frances
Sparks.
Survivors include two
sons, Billy Ray Dutton
(Carol) of Moulton and
Charles Obed Dutton
(Rose) of Conyers, Ga.;
one sister, Syble Morgan
of Moulton; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two greatgreat-grandchildren.

Bobby Eugene Martin.

between honest calls and fraud
Know Your Telemarketing Rights
How do you know if
a telemarketing call is a
scam? That friendly voice
on the phone may belong
to an honest salesperson
who is just trying to make
a living or a crook who
wants to trick you out of
your money.
Three-quarters of the
adults recently surveyed
by Consumer Federation
of America (CFA) said that
they think it is hard for
most consumers to tell the
difference. And while nine
in ten are concerned that
telemarketing calls from
companies they haven’t
done business with before
might be fraudulent, many
do not know their basic
telemarketing rights.
Knowing your telemarketing rights can help you
spot fraud, because legitimate companies usually
follow the rules; scammers
don’t. Is an unfamiliar
company calling you even
though your phone number is on the National Do
Not Call Registry? Is it a
recorded sales pitch when
you never gave the company written permission to
make that type of “robocall” to you? Is the company’s number blocked
on your caller ID? CFA’s
new guide to Understanding Your Telemarketing
Rights and Avoiding Fraud
explains what telemarketers should and shouldn’t
do and how you can report violations. If the telemarketer is violating your
rights, STOP! HANG UP!
It may be a scam.
Other danger signs of
telemarketing fraud include:
• Pressure to act immediately or you’ll lose this
great opportunity
• Promises that you can
make easy money working
from home
• Offers to help you get a
loan, fix your credit record,
settle your debts, save your
home from foreclosure or
recover money you’ve already lost to a scam, if you
pay a fee in advance
• Guarantees that you
can make big returns on
investments with little or
no risk
• Requests that you pay
a fee to enter a sweepstakes or lottery or send
money for taxes, bonding,
or legal expenses to claim
your winnings. It’s also
a danger sign if a prize is
being offered as part of a
sales pitch and the telemarketer doesn’t tell you that
no purchase is necessary.
Another clue is how
you’re asked to pay. Fraudsters usually want to get
paid fast and in cash—they
don’t want to wait for
checks to clear or for payments to go through the
credit card system, so they
look for other ways to get
the money. If a telemarketer has money transfer
as the only method of payment it accepts, beware!
Those services should only
be used to send money to
companies you know and
trust and to individuals you
have met in person. You
should always have the
choice of whether to use
money transfers or other
ways to pay.
Scammers may even
suggest that you put cash
between the pages of a
magazine and send it to
them. Legitimate telemar-
keters would never ask you
to do that. They are also
exploiting new payment
methods, telling people to
send them the money on
a prepaid card or to put it
on a MoneyPak, a product
that can be used to transfer funds to prepaid cards
or make payments to authorized merchants, and
give them the serial number. Their aim is to cash in
and disappear before you
realize that you’ve been
robbed.
Crooks are also taking
advantage of prepaid cell
phones, Internet phone service, caller ID “spoofing”
and other technologies to
mask who and where they
are. Often, they’re in foreign countries, making it
difficult for U.S. law enforcement to pursue them.

yourself from telemarketing fraud and other scams

Estelle Speake White
May 14, 1919 - March 20, 2013
Cary, NC
It is with great sadness and regret
that the family announces that Sarah
Estelle Speake White left this world
to be with her Maker on Wednesday,
March 20, 2013. She passed away
peacefully at home at the age of 93.
She was married to James (Ted) Clifton White for over 67 years.
Estelle was born in the Speake Community of Lawrence
County, Alabama on May 14, 1919. She grew up in Moulton,
Alabama, graduated from Lawrence County High School, attended State Teachers College in Florence, Alabama and completed her education and obtained her degree and a NC teaching
certiÀcation from North Carolina State University at the age of
48. Estelle retired from teaching English at Cary High School in
1983. Estelle continued to be active in the community through
volunteer work well into her 80’s.
Estelle was active in her church in Alabama and was an active member of Cary First Baptist Church since 1961. During
WWII, Estelle and Ted both served in the Navy. Estelle served
3 years as a member of the WAVES while Ted served 4 years of
active duty in the South PaciÀc.
Estelle White is survived by her loving husband Ted White;
her daughter, Vicky (Marvin) Thompson of Cary, NC; sons, Jim
(Elizabeth) White of Cary, NC and Bill (Ann) White of Liberty,
NC. She is also survived by 4 grandchildren: Tonia (Tim) Hines
of Wilmington, NC, David (Jennifer) Venable of Raleigh, NC,
and Eli and William White of Cary, NC. Also surviving are 4
great grandchildren: Adeline and Ashton Hines and Estelle and
Will Venable. In addition, extended family members include:
Becky (Duane) Beckner; Wendy, Matthew Rhodes; Heather
(Jason) and Kyndall Faircloth; Collin and Hannah Joyce; and
numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family was at Brown-Wynne Funeral
Home, 200 SE Maynard Road, Cary, NC at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2013. The funeral service was held immediately
afterwards at 3:00 p.m. Burial followed at Apex Cemetery.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation,
gratitude and love to Lisa Willets for her exceptional care and
support of both Estelle and Ted during the last years of Estelle’s
life. The family also wishes to recognize and thank Hospice of
Wake County for their outstanding care and support. To honor
Estelle, the family requests that any donations be made to Hospice of Wake County.
The family wishes to thank everyone who has expressed
their love and admiration for Estelle over the years by repeatedly saying “You have the sweetest Mom”!
