INTRODUCTION
About the Graduate School
The Graduate School provides advice on a wide range of graduate funding opportunities and
will, where possible, guide applicants to the most appropriate sources of funding for their degree
programmes. The Graduate School also administers a wide range of funding schemes that are
open to students in pursuit of a postgraduate degree at King’s College London.

About this Document
This funding guidance document has been produced to provide information about some of the
funding opportunities offered through/administered by the Graduate School for Postgraduate
Research (PGR) degree 1 programmes at King’s College London for the 2013/14 2 academic year.
PLEASE NOTE, the funds described in this document do not apply to MRes and MPhilStud
programmes which are classed as postgraduate ‘taught’ (PGT) degrees for this purpose. For
information about Graduate School funding for PGT degrees please refer to the web link here:

page; note that this is not an exhaustive list of all schemes covered by the Graduate School as

Within this document you will find details about the criteria, application process, and selection
process for each of the individual schemes covered by this document. Also contained in this
document are the full Terms and Conditions (see section ‘Conditions & Regulations of
Funding’) that will apply to all of the schemes listed, with the exception of the AHRC and
ESRC Studentships which have specific terms and conditions.

Graduate School (GS) International Research Studentships
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants MUST:
• Be due to commence a full-time postgraduate research degree programme at King’s College London
during the 2013/14 academic year;
• Be liable to pay the postgraduate research degree programme tuition fees at the full
international/overseas (higher) rate;
• Have followed the correct application procedure that is applicable to their chosen academic
School/Institute, as instructed in the ‘Application Process’ section below, by the set application
deadline;
• Fulfil the relevant academic entry requirements set by King’s College London.
Please note that:
• Students who will pay tuition fees at the Home/EU rate are not eligible;
• Existing research degree students are not eligible to apply;
• These studentships cannot be held on a part-time basis;
• Eligible postgraduate research degree programmes covered by this scheme include MPhil/PhD and
Professional Doctorates only
• Distance learning programmes are ONLY eligible for the fees-only award;
• Applicants who have already been awarded a PhD or equivalent degree are not eligible.

announced in November 2012.

Selection Process:
Schools/Institutes will be split into two groups as part of the selection process, as follows:
H&N Group, includes:
- Schools of Biomedical Sciences
- Schools of Medicine
- Dental Institute
- Institute of Psychiatry
- School of Natural & Mathematical Sciences
- Florence Nightingale School of Nursing & Midwifery
A&S Group, includes:
- School of Arts & Humanities
- Global Institutes
- King’s Learning Institute
- School of Law
- School of Social Sciences & Public Policy
Timelines will vary between the two groups however BOTH groups of Schools/Institutes will follow the
same principal selection process, which includes two phases:
Phase 1. Initial assessment and short-listing of applications at the local level by individual academic
Departments/Schools/Institutes
Phase 2. Final review and selection of short-listed candidates, conducted by a Central Selection Panel
Committee made up of representatives from each of the participating Schools/Institutes
within the group, chaired by the Director of the Graduate School.
After the relevant application deadlines have passed, individual departments/school/institutes will review
the application it has received for the awards and check applicant eligibility.
Each School/Institute will be asked to select a set limited quota of candidates that they wish to support
for further consideration in phase 2.
For all the candidates who are selected for further consideration by their School/Institute, the
School/Institute will be expected to rank the candidates and complete an internal nomination form for
each candidate, which will include the following information:

Candidate’s name and student number
Programme/department/school details
School ranking
Candidate’s previous qualifications
Assessment of past performance, as given by actual or proposed supervisor(s)
Assessment of potential future performance, as given by actual or proposed
supervisor(s)
Confirmation of support from School Head of Graduate Studies
All internal nomination forms must be submitted to the Graduate School Support Team (GSST) by a set
deadline. Nomination deadlines will vary for each group of Schools/Institutes - please refer to the table
below for nomination deadline dates.

Note that the selection of all applicants will primarily be based on applicants’ academic calibre, research
potential and alignment of the proposed research with the proposed supervisor and the research strategy
of the relevant department/research group.
Once School/Institute nominations are received by the GSST, nominations will be recorded and the
selected candidates’ details ratified.
Copies of the School/Institute nomination forms for all the eligible candidates within the group will be
circulated by the GSST to relevant members of the central selection panel.
Central selection panel members will be asked to assess and rank all the School/Institute nominations
received for their respective group. The central selection panel committee may wish to convene, either
through a meeting or via emails, to discuss the overall outcome and to produce a final list of candidates in
ranked order.
The Committees decision is final.
The final ranked list of candidates should be confirmed to the GSST as soon as decisions are made and
by no later than the deadline by which results must be announced to applicants.
The allocation of awards will be based on a candidate’s final ranking, whereby the top ranked candidates
will be offered a ‘Full’ award (covering tuition fees and stipend) and the following candidates offered a
‘Fees-Only’ award (covering only tuition fees). Once all awards have been assigned, the following 10
candidates on the ranked list will be considered as reserve candidates.
Announcement of Results:
All results will be announced via email by the Graduate School Support Team in the first instance.
Unfortunately it will not be possible to notify unsuccessful candidates.
Only successful and reserve candidates will be informed of the funding outcome, and the deadline by
which candidates should expect to hear is given in the table below.

Applicants who have not heard from the Graduate School Support Team by the relevant deadline (as
indicated in the table) should assume that their application has unfortunately been unsuccessful for the
fund.
Candidates who have been selected for an award will be asked to provide a decision on
acceptance/decline by a given deadline. If a successful candidate fails to respond by the given deadline
or declines the offer, their award will automatically be transferred to the next candidate in-line for the
award. Note that where a ‘Full’ award is not taken up, this opportunity will be passed to the first ‘Feesonly’ candidate on the list and the ‘Fees-only’ award will then be offered to a reserve candidate.

King’s AHRC Doctoral Award Studentships
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants MUST:
• Be due to commence a full-time or part-time MPhil/PhD degree programme at King’s College
London during 2013/14, OR, be currently undertaking an MPhil/PhD programme at King’s College
London and have at least one more year of full-time registration, or 20 months part-time registration,
remaining on their MPhil/PhD programme at King’s in 2013/14 (excluding the writing up period);
• Be eligible for home/EU tuition fees only, and meet the AHRC’s residency eligibility criteria;
• Plan to, or currently be, undertaking a research project within one of the following AHRC Subject
Area Panels - Classics & Ancient History; English Language & Literature; Film Studies &
Television Studies; French Language & Culture; History; Iberian & Latin American Language &
Culture; Linguistics; Music; Philosophy; Religious Studies.
• Complete and submit the required application documentation by the funding deadline of 17:00
GMT, 1 February 2013;
• Fulfil the relevant academic entry requirements set by King’s College London;
Please note that:
• Students who will pay tuition fees at the international/overseas (higher) rate are not eligible
• Professional doctorate degrees are not eligible
• Distance learning programmes are not eligible
• Joint PhD programmes are not eligible
• Applicants who have already been awarded a PhD or equivalent degree are not eligible
• Students who are in their ‘writing up’ year, or are due to go into ‘writing up’ in 2013/14, are not
eligible

Applications will be invited from November 2012 and will close on 1st February 2013 at 17:00GMT sharp
ALL APPLICANTS who wish to be considered for the AHRC Studentship MUST, by the application
deadline, complete an ‘AHRC & ESRC Studentships 2013-14 Case for Support’ form and submit this
directly to the Graduate School at [email protected], stating reference: ‘RC CASE 2013/14 - [Your
Name]’, in the subject field of the email. The template form is downloadable via the link:

NOTE TO NEW STUDENTS who plan to start their research degree in 2013/14*: Before you apply to
the Graduate School for the AHRC Studentship, you must first apply for admissions for the research
programme that you intend to undertake at King’s College London. Admissions applications must be
submitted via the King’s online admissions portal https://myapplication.kcl.ac.uk/ and all applications
must be submitted and be ‘complete’ by the application deadline of 17:00GMT, 01 February 2013. To
be considered ‘complete’, the admissions applications must include two supporting references and
academic transcripts. It will be the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that their references and
transcripts are submitted to the College on time.
When completing the online admissions application: under the ‘Funding’ section, please select ‘Arts &
Humanities Research Council’ from the drop-down menu in response to question 4 ‘Name of grant
awarding body’.

*Students who have already applied for admissions, and those who previously applied but deferred entry
to 2013/14, will NOT be required to submit an admissions application again.
Please note that students who seek to apply for both the AHRC Studentships and the ESRC
Studentships will only need to submit the ‘AHRC & ESRC Studentships 2013-14 Case for Support’ form
once to the Graduate School.
Selection Process:
Once the application deadline has passed, the Research & Graduate School Support (RGSS) office will
gather and record the details of all the applications received.
The RGSS office will check the eligibility of all applicants and assign the applicants to the correct
subject area category.
Eligible application materials will be sorted into the relevant subject area categories and then circulated
for consideration. Decisions made by the panel will then be sent to the central King’s-AHRC
Management Group for final approval.
Assessment of applications will be based on:
i)
Evidence and strength of academic qualifications gained (minimum entry qualification is an
undergraduate 2i and/or a higher degree), and where applicable, professional qualifications
and/or relevant experience;
ii)
Strength of the research proposal;
iii)
Matching of the applicant’s interests with his/her potential (or current) supervisor
Please note that, during the selection process, applicants’ supervisors may be contacted internally for a
supporting statement.
Announcement of Results:
All results will be announced via email in the first instance.
Candidates who are deemed ineligible for the AHRC Studentship will be informed about their
ineligibility within 3 weeks from the application deadline.
Eligible applicants who have been considered for the scheme will be informed of the outcome towards
the end of April 2013.
Candidates who have been selected for an award will be asked to provide a decision on
acceptance/decline by a given deadline. If a successful candidate fails to respond by the given deadline
or declines the offer, their award will automatically be transferred to a reserve candidate who is next inline for the award.

King’s Annual Fund (KAF) Studentship / King’s University of London PGR (UoL)
Studentship
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants MUST:
• Be due to commence a postgraduate research degree programme within the Department of Social
Science, Health & Medicine at King’s College London during the 2013/14 academic year;
• Either already hold a place on a postgraduate research degree programme to start in 2013/14, OR
have submitted a complete admissions application with all the required materials (as instructed in
the ‘Application Process’ section below), by the funding application deadline set by the department;
• Intend to undertake the postgraduate research degree programme at King’s College London on a
full-time basis;
• Fulfil the relevant academic entry requirements set by King’s College London.
Please note that:
• Existing research degree students are not eligible to apply
• These studentships cannot be held on a part-time basis
• Eligible postgraduate research degree programmes covered by this scheme include MPhil/PhD
• Distance learning programmes are not eligible
• These studentships provide funding to cover Home/EU tuition fees. Students required to pay
tuition fees at the higher international/overseas rate are eligible to apply but will be required to cover
the difference between the home/EU and international fee level from alternative sources

Information about the King’s Annual Fund award competition will be announced in November 2012.
All applicants who have submitted a complete* admissions application to King’s College London for a
postgraduate research degree programme within the Department of Social Science, Health & Medicine
by the stated deadline set by the department, and who have met all the eligibility criteria (as set above),
will be automatically considered for the award.

- full academic record with transcripts
- two official academic references

There is no separate funding application for this award.
Selection Process:
All eligible applications received for this scheme will be considered by the Department of Social Science,
Health & Medicine. Assessment and selection of applications will be conducted at the local level by the
Department of Social Science, Health & Medicine, and the Director of the Graduate School will be
involved in the final decisions for the award.

Selection Process:
Once the King’s application deadline has passed, the Research & Graduate School Support (RGSS)
office will gather and record the details of all the applications received.
The RGSS office will check the eligibility of all applicants, and all applications that are deemed eligible
will be circulated to a central King’s Graduate School selection panel for assessment.
The panel will select up to 15 candidates who they wish to support for the award, and these candidates
will be nominated to the CSC. The panel will be asked to make their final nomination decisions by 1st
March 2013 at the latest.

Selection Process:
All eligible applications will be considered through an internal selection process undertaken by the
relevant academic departments and School of Natural & Mathematical Sciences
The selection of applicants will primarily be based on applicants’ academic calibre and research
potential.
The School of Natural & Mathematical Sciences will be asked to confirm their decisions with the
Graduate School Support Team for final ratification.
Decisions will be made by the end of April 2013 at the latest

Confirmation of awards will come from the Graduate School Support Team, who will be responsible for
issuing the formal studentship letters containing instructions about how the funds are paid.
Unfortunately it will not be possible to notify unsuccessful applicants.
Only successful applicants will be informed of the funding outcome so applicants who have not heard
from the Graduate School Support Team by 1 May 2013 should assume that their application has
unfortunately been unsuccessful for the fund.
Candidates who have been selected for an award will be asked to provide a decision on
acceptance/decline by a given deadline. If a successful candidate fails to respond by the given deadline
or declines the offer, their award will automatically be transferred to a reserve candidate who is next inline for the award.

CONDITIONS & REGULATIONS OF FUNDING
CONDITIONS APPLICABLE TO ALL SCHEMES except AHRC & ESRC which have specific terms and conditions
attached (see below)
• Awards are offered on the condition that the candidate has met/will meet all the conditions required
for acceptance by his/her chosen School of study.
• Each award will be made on the assumption that there are adequate resources for the research
project, and that the candidate’s proposed course of study is acceptable to the department/division
and School/Institute in which they wish to study.
• New awards offered in 2013 are valid only to commence in the 2013/14 academic session; deferral of
an award to a later academic session is not permitted.
• Awards granted for the 2013/14 academic session cannot be used retrospectively for whole or part of
any earlier session.
• Awards cannot be transferred to another institution.
• An award-holder must be registered as a full-time student for the length of their research degree
• Award-holders must comply with College regulations to submit their thesis within the required time
frame
• If an award-holder wishes to make a change to: a) the research project, b) the supervisor, or c)
department/division specified on their application form, he/she must first seek approval from the
Research & Graduate School Support team. The award-holder would need to outline the changes
proposed and provide confirmation of i) the department/supervisor’s support of such changes, and ii)
the tuition fees (if they are different from the amount attached to the original research project).
Failure to inform the Research & Graduate School Support team of such a change may impact on the
continuation of an award.
• If an award-holder needs to take time out from their studies due to illness, accident, fieldwork or for
any other serious cause, they must report this as soon as possible to the relevant School
Office/Academic/Record Centre to request an interruption of studies. The award-holder must also
inform the Research & Graduate School Support team to request a temporary suspension of award
funding. If the Research & Graduate School Support team is not informed and continues to pay for a
student who is absent from their studies, a refund will be sought for overpayment, and it may also
impact on the continuation of an award.
• If an award-holder: i) already holds another funding award from an organisation; or ii) is otherwise
financially supported by another organisation; Or iii) is to secure another funding award later on
during the course of their research degree programme, and the Graduate School considers the
fund(s)/award(s), or other form of support, to be sufficient to cover maintenance and/or the
programme tuition fees, the award-holder will not be permitted to hold these funds/awards
concurrently. The rule to remember is that if two funds/awards cover the same amount e.g. both
provide funds to cover full tuition fees, they cannot be held concurrently.
• Award-holders who receive funding from alternative source(s) will be required to disclose details of
those funds to the Graduate School so that an assessment can be made regarding any potential
overlap of funding.
• Applicants must be aware of all the additional financial commitments involved when attending their
chosen course of study at King’s. Awards are granted on the understanding that the award-holder will
take responsibility for any additional expenses incurred for the duration of study.
• An award can be terminated at any time under the following circumstances:
• If an unsatisfactory progress report on the award-holder is received from the student’s
supervisor/department
• If an award-holder ceases to be a full-time research student
• For awards open to international students only – if an award-holder is no longer required to pay
fees at the full international research student rate.

• If an award-holder receives other overlapping funding
All awards covered by these conditions may not be used to cover writing-up fees.

CONFIRMATION OF AWARDS
The initial offer email sent to successful students will include instructions on how to accept the award,
and the deadline for doing so. If the student is unable to take up the award, he/she should provide a
reason why (this information is used for statistical purposes only).
Awards must only be accepted on the understanding that the student has read, understood and agrees to
comply with the ‘Conditions & Regulations of Funding’ as set out in this booklet.
Successful candidates who confirm acceptance for the award(s) will be sent an official award
confirmation letter detailing the terms and conditions of the award(s) and the exact value of the
award(s) granted.
Where an offer-holder accepts an award but later decides that he/she is unable to take up the
opportunity for whatever reason, we would like to ask that, as a matter of courtesy, the student informs
the Researcher & Graduate School Support office, in good time, so that the opportunity could be passed
on to another candidate where possible.
PAYMENT OF AWARDS

Where an award provides funds directly towards tuition fees, an internal transfer will be arranged by
the Research & Graduate School Support team and no money will be paid to the award-holder.
Where an award provides an annual student stipend, payments will be made on a monthly basis into a
UK bank account.
Where an award can be used to cover either tuition fees or living costs, the award-holder will have the
option of receiving their award directly or it can be used to off-set a proportion of tuition fees (see
above)
RENEWAL OF AWARDS

All research degree awards are granted for one year in the first instance but will be renewed for the
remaining length of the postgraduate research programme (to exclude the writing-up period),
subject to the award-holder’s satisfactory progress.
Awards are renewed only if the award-holder adheres to the Conditions & Regulations of Funding (as
outlined above)
The maximum tenure of awards is 3 years (or 4 years in some instances), providing the award-holder
is still engaged in the full-time (or part-time equivalent where applicable) postgraduate research
programme at King’s.
Award-holders are not required to apply for renewal of their award; the Research & Graduate School
Support team will contact the relevant School Office/Academic Centre and/or supervisor(s) for a
progress report. If renewal is recommended, the award will automatically be rolled over in to the next
academic year. If there are any queries over the renewal of an award then the award-holder will be
notified.

SUBMISSION OF THESIS
•
Award-holders are required to follow the College regulations when it comes to the submission of
their thesis and completion of their research degree, which requires students to submit their thesis
within 4 years (full-time equivalent) of initial registration.
