Gastronomy
Naples is the home of pizza, sold on the streets
along with a dazzling array of other goodies.
Calzone (stuffed pizza), potato croquettes, rich balls
and courgette flowers in batter are just some of the
street fare. Meat plays a much smaller part, with
seafood and vegetables king, and clams, squid and
octopus feature large on menus. Neopolitans are
very good at pastries. Good white wines such as
Biancolella and Greco di Tufo, or Taurasi red. Eat in
the Mergellina district (quayside), but Naples is full
of good, traditional and cheap restaurants.
Pharmacists (farmacia) are qualified to give advice on minor
ailments and to dispense prescriptions. There will always be a
24-hour one 'on turn'. Dial 112 anywhere in the EU to reach
the emergency services. Additional local numbers: Police 112,
Ambulance113, Fire 115.
