Currently, all we have is the date set aside—no other details have been
established for time, duration, free admission, etc. That will be forwarded
to individual clubs as the time draws nearer.
Editors, please pass this information on either via your newsletter
or at your next regular club meeting. It would also be appreciated
if you would promote this event starting in June (or so) of next
year. It’s great advertising for individual clubs and a fantastic way to
promote the Model A hobby in general.
Those who went this year can attest to what a wonderful
time it is to spend a day at the circus!

What’s up on the web?
Your web at www.model-a-wis.com. Is coming of age and becoming more useful for the club. Have you
looked lately?
Did you know that the current issue of “Wheeling the A” is available on your website for download in
Technicolor if you prefer. This year’s past issues are available.
The webmaster can post the members “for sale’ and “wanted” items on the website. If space is at a premium
in “Wheeling the A”, you may find extras posted on the web. If you want a picture to accompany your web
ad, forward one in the jpeg format to the webmaster. You can remain incognito if preferred by using a forwarding email address from the webmaster. If you have a personal email address and don’t want to publish
it, let the webmaster know. He will assign a forward email address that appears in the ad as
“[email protected]. Mail sent to the forwarding address will automatically be sent to your personal address without disclosing your personal address.
Club information that is too late to be included in the newsletter is being posted on the web. Items of importance such as last minute changes of location or time will be posted.
The new event calendar on the website will have all the scheduled events posted. Clicking on an event will
give a brief description and time and other important information. Once the event has been clicked on, a
window opens up with “more information”. Inside that is “map”, which will give you a map of the event
location.
A new service is available for those members who want to be notified/reminded of upcoming events.
If you want to be notified via email, send a note to the webmaster with the email address where you want
notifications sent. Notices will be emailed one week before and also 2 days before the event. These notices
also request a response whether you will attend. It would help the hosts if you also include a comment
concerning how many of your group will attend so proper arrangements can be made for refreshments,
space etc.

November Prez Notes
Our club wouldn’t exist without the V-word – volunteers.
Volunteers like Marty and Jo Lene Jannsen, who hosted a great fall tour last
month despite the rainy weather, and Ron and Diane Smith, who pulled out all stops a few weeks
ago to host the spookiest Ghost Gallop in recent memory.
A dozen more club members have stepped forward in a quieter manner to fill our club’s volunteer
positions, everything from club photographer to club tool keeper.
These important volunteer positions are newsletter editor (Sue Quam), webmaster (Carl Doro),
newsletter label preparation (Bob Sonnen), property keeper (Rich Miller), tool keeper (Bill Storey),
paid newsletter advertising and member ads (Ed Schultz), newsletter distribution (Marilyn
Brojanac and Lorraine Schultz), photographer (Barb Sonnen), video librarian (Dave Boucher), and
club historians (Art and Sue Blazek). These jobs and the names, phone numbers, and email
addresses of the volunteers are listed on page 2 of every issue of our club newsletter.
Some of these positions have regular monthly duties, like newsletter editor, newsletter
distribution, and club historians. Others have irregular duties, like tool keeper and librarian. But all
of the positions are important to the well being of our club, so be sure to give these folks a big pat
on the back the next time you see them.
All of the volunteer positions are open to all members of the club. If you are interested in
volunteering for one of the positions I’ve listed above, all you need to do is to contact me or one of
the other board members. There is no time limit on each position; you can volunteer for as long as
you see fit.
My request last month for candidates for January’s board of directors election has produced at
least one new candidate so far, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed. We have five positions to fill
this time around, and without a strong nine-member board our club will struggle to keep its regular
activities – indoor meets, outdoor meets, technical meets, and more – moving in the right
direction.
So please consider seeking a position on the board. Nominations are open through the end of the
December indoor meet (our annual Christmas party) on Dec. 9. The election will be held at our
Jan. 13 indoor meet (also the annual ice cream social). All indoor meets are 1:30 p.m. at St.
Aloysius Church 1414 S. 93rd Street, West Allis. Our meeting room is around back in the lower
level, use the parking lot off 92nd Street.

DID YOU KNOW…………………………..
Abraham Lincoln issued a 'Thanksgiving Proclamation' on third October 1863 and officially set aside
the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents
used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held.
Then President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving
Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate
the economy of the state. Later on Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared
that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of NoWheeling the “A”– November 2007, Page 8

Reminiscing with the Historian
FIFTY YEARS AGO, 1957 - The Mendota Autorama was attended by our club, with eleven cars.
The show had a total of 332 cars. Nearly everyone at the meet was dressed in the fashions befitting
the eras of their cars.
FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, 1961 - On November 11th, there was a movie meet. Films of the 1962
Indianapolis 500-mile race and a bit of old car history were shown.
FORTY YEARS AGO, 1967 - There was no information for November, so I will fill in with something of interest. Motor vehicles were first required to be registered in 1905. The fee at that time was
$2.00 for the life of the car. The owner was assigned a number and he made his own license plate.
These usually consisted of an old board with numbers painted or nailed on, or leather or metal made
the same way. This procedure was changed in 1909 when the fee went to $2.00 annually and the first
plate was actually issued by the state.
THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, 1972 - Everyone was invited to Brojanac’s Avenue Brake Shop for a
professional upholstery demonstration on the proper installation of a front seat cover.
THIRTY YEARS AGO, 1977 - The first indoor meet of the season was held November 12th at
Stanton’s Hall. About 100 people attended and were treated to a talk by Mr. Noel, who worked at the
Ford factory during the Model A era. He gave a unique insight into the workings of Ford at the time.
Thanks was given to Ernie Neuman for arranging it.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, 1982 - The technical seminar was held at the Avenue Brake Shop.
Craftsmen from White Post Restoration from White Post, Virginia, gave a talk on frame-up restoration.
TWENTY YEARS AGO, 1987 - On November 14th, the first indoor meet of the season was held at
St. Aloysius Church Hall. Over 50 families attended. A slide show put together by Gary Koser and
Dennis Pierce of their trip to Australia was the theme.
FIFTEEN YEARS AGO, 1992 - The indoor meeting for November offered an interesting film on the
development of the Burma Shave campaign and other Ford films were shown.
TEN YEARS AGO, 1997 - Shwabe’s Home Improvement was the site of the technical meeting, and
Mike Brojanac presented his brake seminar.
FIVE YEARS AGO, 2002 - The Veterans’ Day parade was a big success, due partially because of
the great turnout from the Wisconsin Chapter Model “A” Ford Club. We had
twenty cars participating in the parade.

Richfield Historical Society Thresheree
The 9th annual Richfield Thresheree was held on the
weekend of Sept. 15th & 16th . The weather was
perfect and the best thing was that there were NO mosquitoes.
All of the exhibitors were interesting, the log sawing,
cedar shingle making, fur trapping, quilting, pie baking
contest and many more. Of course we were part of the
event with our shining Model A’s.
We had a wonderful turnout with 31 people, 16 model
A’s and I modern iron from our chapter.

Mitchell Manor September 15th
t was a beautiful sunny afternoon as the sounds of Big Band music from artists such as Glenn Miller and
Benny Goodman filled the air. The residents of Mitchell Manor enjoyed the music as well as over
seventy classic cars. This was the fourth annual show and thanks to some promotion we were able to
double the amount of cars compared to last year.
We had a total of eight Model-A's, some regulars from last year and a few new faces which is always
encouraging. There was a nice variety of cars ranging from Model-T's to Muscle Cars and a Modified
Race Car. Participants were given coupons for Food and Beverage of choice. (Hot Dogs, Chips, Soda &
Cookies, etc.). Free Popcorn was also available to all. Mary Steinbrenner from Mitchell Manor
organized the show, she was very appreciative of our participation and assured us she will invite us
again next year.
Trophies were awarded in three categories which the residents voted for. Unfortunately no Model-A's
placed this year. It is always nice to see them pointing out cars they once owned and listening to there
stories. Hopefully we will have another successful show next year and keep increasing the amount of
cars.

Lake Geneva Classic Car Rally

The last weekend in September was just what the doctor ordered for the
Lake Geneva Classic Car Rally at The Lodge at Geneva Ridge (formerly
Interlaken Resort). We had a fantastic Wisconsin September weekend
complete with warm weather AND sunshine to go for a fun ride in a
Model A.
We gathered at the Chalet at The Lodge at Lake Geneva Ridge before noon
on Saturday to collect and get our poker envelopes together for Wisconsin
Chapter members. Several members collected their envelopes and began
their leisurely tour to various rally spots around Lake Geneva Saturday afternoon.
Sunday was another ideal Wisconsin day to sit outside near Lake Como and enjoy the parade of classic
vehicles past our vantage point. The viewing was doubly sweet as we listened to the Packers win over the
Minnesota Vikings! (GO PACK!)
At noon, the vintage aircraft began their fly-by. The first fly by was the
“missing man formation” in honor of George Krieissl who passed away
earlier this year. George and his wife Jan, along with their son Kurt, began
the Lake Geneva Cancer Rally for Childhood Cancer as a way to honor
their daughter.
Several years ago, Dennis Haag won the best poker hand at the rally with
his perfect hand of five aces. Last year, Dennis & Marjorie Pierce were
among the top ten winning hands. This year Dori Burke traveled all the
way from the east side of Lake Geneva to win the overall first place with a
straight flush!
We retired to our area after the rally prizes were given out at the Chalet where we drew for door prizes
among the rest of our attendees. We appreciate Gary Schwabe providing a sufficient number of door prizes
so everyone present at our finale received something.

Fall Tour,
October 14, 2007
The rainy day didn't dampen our enthusiasm as 49 Model A-er's in 27 cars ventured on our fall tour! We
took a route north through Rockfield, Myra, Boltonville and on to Beechwood where we stopped at the
Cheese Factory which opened in 1933. Alice Krahn, the owner, was delighted to sell us all the cheese we
wanted to buy!
From there we headed to Dundee where we toured the 1855
restored Mill (John Ford gave a great history), walked by the
Extreme Makeover Home and had a snack at the Hamburger
Haus.
The next stop was the Reuss Ice Age Center which was a treat
to be in a nice warm building with great bathrooms for awhile!
The last stop was our home in Sussex for refreshments and a
tour of our many collections! The fall colors and
the route were wonderful even though we didn't see the sun at
all! Thanks again to everyone who joined us for the day!

The October 18th Technical Seminar
on Roadside Repairs was a lot of fun, very
informative and we had a great turnout of 38 members.

“sabotaged” by his partner, Tony Schwark.. Ed Schultz
volunteered to get the engine started, and with suggestions
from the group, figure out what was wrong and how to fix
it. With Al’s help and his step-by-step check list, Ed used a
test light to find a dirty battery terminal, a blown fuse and a
bad wire in the distributor. The problems were corrected,
the engine started and ran fine.
The next demonstration was replacing a timing gear simulating a roadside breakdown. Roger Olson directed volunteers Jeff Bezotte, Bill Dickinson and Joe Schwark in the
removal of a bad timing gear and the correct replacement of
a new one.
All these steps were documented in a Roadside Repair
Booklet that Al Downs handed out to everyone who
Attended.

INGREDIENTS
2 (14.5 ounce) cans green beans, drained
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1 (6 ounce) can French fried onions
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2. Place green beans and soup in a large microwave-safe bowl. Mix well and heat in the microwave on HIGH until warm
(3 to 5 minutes). Stir in 1/2 cup of cheese and heat mixture for another 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer green bean mixture to a
casserole dish and sprinkle with French fried onions and remaining cheese.
3. Bake in a preheated 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) oven until the cheese melts and the onions just begin to brown.
