Introduction What Do We Do? How To Contact Us Being in hospital can be a frightening and confusing experience for any child, young person, their family and carers. The Neurosurgical Nurse Specialists provide advice, support and education for children and young people with: • We aim to introduce ourselves to you as soon as possible following your child’s admission. • The service is available Monday to Friday from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm, excluding bank holidays. • We provide information and support to you, your child and your family. • We can be contacted on 0161 701 1853. • Hydrocephalus • Brain lesion • Spinal lesion and their family and carers. The Nurse Specialists liaise with families and carers and offer advice to all of the professionals involved in your child’s care and ensure there is effective communication between the hospital and community teams. • We are the link between the hospital and your home. • We work closely with all the professionals involved in your child’s care, to ensure there is a co-ordinated approach and good communication with you and your child. • Who Are We? Provide specialist teaching and support to other healthcare professionals involved in your child’s care. We are experienced in caring for children and young people who need neurosurgical treatment. • Provide telephone support and advice to you, your child and healthcare professionals. We work as part of the team looking after children and young people with hydrocephalus and brain or spinal lesions and their families. • Provide support and advice after your child has been discharged from hospital. An answer machine is available so that you can leave a message if we are not in the office. Messages are collected daily. Please leave your name and telephone number and we will return your call as soon as possible. • We can also be contacted by e-mail: [email protected] [email protected] • If we are unavailable and you are concerned about your child please telephone the staff on Ward 78 on 0161 701 7800. We are based at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. 2 3 4 Suggestions, Concerns and Complaints If you wish to make a comment, have a concern or want to complain, it is best in the first instance to speak to the manager of the ward or department involved. The Trust has a Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) who can be contacted on (0161) 276 8686 and via e-mail: [email protected]. They will help you if you have a concern, want advice, or wish to make a comment or complaint. No Smoking Policy The NHS has a responsibility for the nation’s health. Protect yourself, patients, visitors and staff by adhering to our no smoking policy. Smoking is not permitted within any of our hospital buildings or grounds. Neurosurgical Nurse Specialists Translation and Interpretation Service Information For Parents and Carers Do you have difficulty speaking or understanding English? Information leaflets about the service are readily available throughout the Trust. Please ask any member of staff for a copy.
