THE MODERNS
Chagall, Degas, Leger, Miro, Picasso and more…
THE MODERNS: Selections from
the Saltzman Family Collection
continues celebrations of the
Museum’s 25th anniversary year
with an exhibition of early 20thcentury modern art. The exhibition
honors the Museum’s Founding
President, the late Ambassador
Arnold A. Saltzman, who during his
life formed one of America’s great
private collections of early
modernist painting and sculpture.
The exhibition includes works by
well-known modernists such as
Marc Chagall, Joan Miró,
Constantin Brancusi, Edgar Degas,
Robert Delaunay, Pablo Picasso,
Fernand Léger and many others.
THE MODERNS: Long Island
Collects Modern Art, organized by
guest curator Franklin Hill Perrell,
draws together choice examples of
20th-century art from significant
Long Island collections. This special
presentation embraces a wide
range of treasures by pioneering
artists of the modernist era, among
them Matisse, Monet, Renoir, Dali,
Léger, Chagall, Miró, ToulouseLautrec and others.

Members Socialize at Opening Reception for
Out of the Vault and Vernacular Visions
Posters of the Russian
Revolution: 1917-1921
The opening reception for Out of the Vault: 25 Years of Collecting intrigued members
and guests alike as they got a glimpse for the first time of the impressive scope of the
Museum’s permanent collection. The galleries varied from Tiffany’s evocative 19thcentury paintings of his North African travels, to vibrant works by major 20th-century
Pop and Abstract Expressionist artists, to French masters, to Audubon’s mammal
series, to soulful and dramatic landscapes and to robust theatrical and patriotic
vintage posters. Party guests were also engaged by the works of the four
contemporary Long Island artists shown in Vernacular Visions: Susan Cushing,
Richard Gachot, Francisco Villagran and Burt Young.

Vibrant posters, depicting the new
collective means of production in
Russian mines, fields and factories, were
designed and executed by some of the
foremost Russian artists of the time.
Offered in conjunction with Selections
from the Saltzman Family Collection, this
exhibition is comprised of a collection of
Russian revolutionary posters that was
gifted to the Museum by the Arnold A.
Saltzman Family Foundation.

chaired by Museum Board President Angela Susan Anton, the publisher and owner of Anton Community Publications. The Journal

We will transform one of the Museum’s nature trails into
an Enchanted Halloween adventure. Throughout October, at Family Sundays, we’ll
create masks of woodland creatures like owls, bats, foxes and other spooky types,
and then don them for a journey through our magically transformed Halloween trail,
encountering real-life animals brought by Volunteers for Wildlife. Held indoors in case
of rain. Registration not needed. Museum admission plus $8 per family materials fee.
This event is in place of Family Sundays.

EDUCATION
A record breaking crowd filled the Museum’s grounds for an
Earth Day celebration of art, science and the environment.
The day was enlivened by small animals from the Science
Museum of Long Island and shooting goals with members of
the NY Cosmos. This free family day was sponsored by Blue
Ocean Wealth Solutions, an office of MetLife. Shown are
Laura Lynch and Katie Hillman of the Museum’s education
department with Tracey Bianco and Bobbi Rebisz of Blue Ocean Wealth Solutions
We’re proud to be part of LI Museum
Educators Roundtable (LI MER), a new
organization for museum educators that
will enable us to learn from each other and
to effectively advocate for arts education.
Recently a large group of educators from
throughout Nassau and Suffolk attended a
LI MER program at Old Westbury Gardens.
Families with children on the Autism spectrum have a
new resource at the Museum. Creative Expeditions is
designed to offer opportunities for children aged 5 to 10
to come into the galleries to talk about and to make art in
a welcoming and creative environment that encourages
success. Creative Expeditions is made possible through
partial funding from the New York State Council on the
Arts and the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
Our staff of Museum educators participates in Cohen
Medical Center’s Bridge to the Arts, a program that brings
cultural activities to children at the hospital. At the
conclusion of each session, we distribute free Family Visitor
Passes to the young patients so they can visit the Museum
with their families once they’re feeling better.
Museum Director Karl E. Willers, Ph.D. and Director of
Education Laura Lynch recently traveled to Albany to
acquaint legislators with education programs that support
Long Island school districts and communities. They are
shown with NY State Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th
Senate District).

The Art of Golf, at the PGA Tour Superstore in Westbury, was a fun evening of
networking, golf, games and sampling cuisine from fine area restaurants. This very
successful event, organized by members and friends of our Corporate Committee
under the leadership of Ray Sikorski, raised funds to support education programs at
the Museum. It also helped improve the attendees’ golf skills through practice at the
simulators and putting greens and with tips from pros. Congratulations to Ray and
his team for a great night out that was enjoyed by all.
