The exhibition honors the Museum’s Founding President, the late Ambassador Arnold A. Saltzman, who during his life formed one of America’s great private collections of early modernist painting and sculpture. The exhibition includes works by well-known modernists such as Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, Constantin Brancusi, Edgar Degas, Robert Delaunay, Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger and many others. THE MODERNS: Long Island Collects Modern Art, organized by guest curator Franklin Hill Perrell, draws together choice examples of 20th-century art from significant Long Island collections. This special presentation embraces a wide range of treasures by pioneering artists of the modernist era, among them Matisse, Monet, Renoir, Dali, Léger, Chagall, Miró, ToulouseLautrec and others. The galleries varied from Tiffany’s evocative 19thcentury paintings of his North African travels, to vibrant works by major 20th-century Pop and Abstract Expressionist artists, to French masters, to Audubon’s mammal series, to soulful and dramatic landscapes and to robust theatrical and patriotic vintage posters. Party guests were also engaged by the works of the four contemporary Long Island artists shown in Vernacular Visions: Susan Cushing, Richard Gachot, Francisco Villagran and Burt Young. Viktor Deni Comrade Lenin Purging the Unclean from the Earth, 1920 Color lithograph, unnumbered edition Nassau County Museum of Art; Gift of the Arnold A. Saltzman Family Foundation Vibrant posters, depicting the new collective means of production in Russian mines, fields and factories, were designed and executed by some of the foremost Russian artists of the time. Offered in conjunction with Selections from the Saltzman Family Collection, this exhibition is comprised of a collection of Russian revolutionary posters that was gifted to the Museum by the Arnold A. Saltzman Family Foundation. Members always see the exhibitions first. Families with children on the Autism spectrum have a new resource at the Museum. Creative Expeditions is designed to offer opportunities for children aged 5 to 10 to come into the galleries to talk about and to make art in a welcoming and creative environment that encourages success. Creative Expeditions is made possible through partial funding from the New York State Council on the Arts and the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Our staff of Museum educators participates in Cohen Medical Center’s Bridge to the Arts, a program that brings cultural activities to children at the hospital. At the conclusion of each session, we distribute free Family Visitor Passes to the young patients so they can visit the Museum with their families once they’re feeling better. Museum Director Karl E. Willers, Ph.D. and Director of Education Laura Lynch recently traveled to Albany to acquaint legislators with education programs that support Long Island school districts and communities. They are shown with NY State Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District). musenews JULY15 R15C singles_layout 6/29/15 7:14 AM Page 11 CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP Robert O. Mayer and Michael D.
