Overstreet email: cjoverstreet@ marlboroelectric.coop Mission Statement The focus of Marlboro Electric Cooperative, Inc. is to make electric energy available to its members at the lowest cost consistent with sound economic principle and management. 4 Why I’m thankful for my co-op AT MY FAMILY’S Thanksgiving dinner each year, we all take turns saying something for which we are grateful. My list is usually about the same—good health, wonderful family and friends, and a job serving the great people of Marlboro and Dillon County. I’m thankful to be a part of Marlboro Electric Cooperative. Our employees are some of the hardest workers I know. Our mission is to provide affordable, reliable, safe electric power, but we also aim to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve. It’s a mission we all take seriously. I’m thankful that Marlboro Electric is locally owned and operated; there are no distant shareholders pulling the strings behind the scenes. Members elect members to serve on the Board of Trustees. We are your neighbors, your friends, your family. I’m thankful for my co-op because it serves as a vibrant force in the local economy—partly because we are local. Marlboro Electric is invested in the future of its communities. We contribute extensively to economic development efforts and to our community—both Marlboro and Dillon County. I’m thankful for my co-op because we care. From sponsoring two youths for the Washington Youth Tour each year and coordinating an annual food drive to reaching out to members with information that will help them save money through our Co-op Connections program, we care about the people and the towns we serve. Finally, I’m thankful for you, our members and faithful readers, because without you, there’d be no Marlboro Electric Cooperative. Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of us here at your electric co-op. William L. “Bill” Fleming President and Chief Executive Officer Students and teachers, apply for D.C. trip Students may apply for the 2014 Washington Youth Tour (June 14–19) from December 1, 2013 to January 31, 2014. A new twist—fraud by text Customers cautioned about fake text messages Marlboro Electric has often warned members about bad guys calling co-op members, claiming they need to make an immediate payment with a money card or risk disconnection. (Don’t do it. Hang up and call the co-op. We’ll verify the status of your account.) Unfortunately, there’s a new twist on fraud, notes John Powers, Information Systems & Public Relations Manager for Marlboro Electric—fraud by text. “A member or customer may receive a text message to the effect of, ‘Your electric service account with Marlboro Electric has been hacked. Text back ‘send now’ to reactivate your account,” Powers warns. “The mere act of texting back ‘send now’ may cause additional fees on your phone bill.” Powers advises members and customers to delete the text without replying and call the co-op at (843) 479-3855. scliving.coop | november/december 2013 | SOUTH CAROLINA LIVING 5
