ISCTE Business School Master in Business Administration MSc. in Business Administration IBS - ISCTE Business School is committed to fully exploring the new frontiers of the Bologna Agreement, by offering an international MSc.BA that can provide each student an unforgettable learning experience and a valuable tool to succeed in the complex but fascinating today's business world. The MSc.BA aims to provide an applied managerial experience that will lead to the development of the skills required to engage in a dynamic and rewarding career in a global world. The MSc.BA builds upon a significant focus on personal skills, offering a state-ofthe-art personal development program (PdP) and innovative leadership and creativity discovery experiences. Finally, our label "MSc.BA" states what the program is all about: an academic experience with professional value, providing an educational journey that may represent a decisive step to succeed in the business world. We invite you to learn more about our program and about how we envisage the role of the business executive and the development of organizations in the years to come. Directors Eduardo Baptista Correia Pedro Fontes Falcão Why Choose the IBS MSc. BA There are 7 strong reasons to choose the full time International MSc.BA of IBS - ISCTE Business School: 1. A global vision of business. Students will regularly be faced with cases and testimonials of the international business dimension and interact with a highly internationally exposed faculty. In addition, students will have a course spread along the curricular year of Doing Business Internationally, covering the fastest growing economies, such as Brazil, China and India, and exploring the different political, cultural, economical and managerial atmospheres of different geographical zones. Finally, a direct contact with a new environment, trough a mid week visit to Barcelona, Spain, will offer an additional international exposure. Página 1 de 21 ISCTE Business School Master in Business Administration 2. A key emphasis in the personal development of each student. Considered a critical feature of the MSc.BA, a parallel program is offered for exploring and developing every dimension of behavior, attitudes and personal skills in order to help students to better lead people, spread innovation and embrace change. 3. An individual business mentor, who is a senior manager and who will provide advice, counselling and expertise in the preparation for the development of a professional career. 4. An innovative leadership experience. Enhancing self-development also includes a unique joint practical training at the Portuguese Navy's Leadership School, internationally reputed by its high quality simulation training and coaching. 5. A networking process of teambuilding and experience exchange from day one. The program starts with a residential weekend aimed at accelerating personal contact, team chemistry and program awareness. This spirit is reinforced all year round with many other activities. 6. An applied business approach. As a final compulsory requirement, each student has to prepare a project either through an internship in Portugal or abroad, or through a self identified project, covering a business situation and allowing the integration of all the program experience. 7. A living experience in one of the safest and most cosmopolitan cities in Europe. With a very competitive cost of living, a warm climate, sandy beaches and a highly cosmopolitan and multicultural population - this is Europe's West Coast capital. The Business World Approach A deep and interactive contact with the business world is a key element in our MSc.BA: • Mentoring process. During the program, each participant will have a business mentor, typically a senior manager with experience in large companies. Mentors will provide business insight, some career development advice as well as support, • if desired, in identifying the final projects. Top manager agenda seminar. Throughout the program, students will attend classes delivered by senior managers or reputed academics, where a topic is analyzed and discussed. Página 2 de 21 ISCTE Business School Master in Business Administration • Lecturing style. Each course will have several business illustrations, in the form of cases, research findings, and small side-projects developed as training tools that empower the application of concepts, as well as the analytical skills of participants. • Final project. The compulsory final project is the ultimate challenge of the program, offering participants the opportunity to apply their newly gained knowledge to a real business situation. The project may be driven by an internship, which the student may get either provided by the School in top international or large Portuguese firms, by the student's initiative or by ongoing consulting activities of the faculty. Although it preferably aims to incorporate a strategic framework in an international context, there is enough degree of freedom to accommodate sector and functional diversity. • AUDAX Entrepreneurship Venture. The development of a new business is the entrepreneurial alternative for the final project. AUDAX is the IBS entrepreneurship center which offers a stimulating environment for the creation of new ventures in association with a private fund aimed at financing start-ups developed by students. The Personal Development Programme The PdP is one of the cornerstones of the MSc.BA. In today's challenging business world, the interpersonal skill-set is one of the keys to success. The PdP is designed to catalyze the process of building the skills and behavior in general of future business leaders. The PdP program addresses two key areas - developing your personality (DyP) and catalyzing your career (CyC): Página 3 de 21 ISCTE Business School Master in Business Administration • The DyP approach develops students' ability to lead people, produce innovation and embrace change. Furthermore all workshops will focus on the development of communication, teamwork and efficiency skills. • The CyC approach helps students to better manage their career, prepare for the recruiting process and to fast forward their network. • The PdP program builds on different phases for personal growth: 1. "Creating visions" - In the first weekend of the Master program, every student develops a personal vision for the next year of development at IBS. 2. "Plan of Excellence" - With the help of a Personal Coach the students create a "Plan of Excellence", a step-by-step plan, based on the vision and on a status-quo check of the current strengths and challenges. 3. "Striving for Excellence" - Throughout the year the process of striving for excellence will be catalyzed through a combination of workshops, tutorials and simulations. Leading personal development systems, such as Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) and the Myers-Briggs-Type Indicator (MBTI), will be adopted in the sessions. Página 4 de 21 ISCTE Business School Master in Business Administration Neuro-linguistic Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is a set of techniques for Programming personal development to improve the performance of self- (NLP)) management, motivation, communication and negotiation. The MBTI®, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, is a questionnaire to explore the characteristics of the student's personality. More MBTI than 5 Million people take the indicator every year. In the professional world, the MBTI® is used in the development of leadership skills and in team-development. The PdP will challenge and motivate each and every student to develop their personal potential and be better prepared to lead people, hand pressure and deliver results. Through the continual and individualized process throughout the whole year at IBS, students can grow in a sustainable way to become leaders in different organizations. The Leadership Experience As part of the Leadership and Organizational Behaviour Course, students will be challenged by a two full days practical training at the Portuguese Navy's Leadership School, which is internationally reputed by its high quality simulation training and coaching program, that will help students to better develop management team and leadership skills. The Creativity Programme Most of today's business success arises from innovation and creativity - in every phase of the business cycle. This program aims to stimulate students' ability to make new and unexpected connections between different areas of human activity where creative thinking is present. The MSc.BA will bring forward the analysis and exploration of creative processes, seeking to capacitate the students to: • Understand the importance of creativity and the sharing of knowledge for leadership and for creating and selling ideas, as fundamental competencies of management; • Use creativity tools and processes from diverse existing theories and artistic activities; • Create contexts for the emergence of creative ideas for the creation of value, inclusion, motivation and passionate dedication in the workplace; Página 5 de 21 ISCTE Business School Master in Business Administration • Analyze the different positions, values and rules that preside to the construction of meanings or discourses, in all areas of human culture and interaction; • Apply and train processes of analysis and deconstruction of each one's position versus those of others, as well as train processes of generating critical thinking and of developing personal dynamics in shifting from one viewpoint to another. At the end of the program, students should be aware of their creative abilities and those of others to think "out of the box", in a teamwork environment, in order to create and better sell ideas. Participants will be expected to trust their capacities in managing complexity and uncertainty when facing unexpected and unknown ituations. First and foremost, students are expected to become increasingly open to the process of creating without preconceived ideas about the outcome. It is also known as the white city, for its unique luminosity. The light, the atmosphere and the Atlantic climate, blended with Mediterranean influences, with warm sunny winters and cool summers, contribute altogether to offer a unique experience for each visitor. Facing the Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon is surrounded by some of the best beaches in Europe as well as some tourist and historical hallmarks such as Estoril and Sintra. Portugal is also acknowledged as being the world leading cork producer, but there are also sure lesser known areas in which it leads. International demand for machinery made in Portugal continues to grow and assist the development of countries throughout the world. Machinery is Portugal's nº1 export. Actually, Portugal is a state-of-the-art point of reference and reliability in the moulds industry. It leads Europe in home textiles and is the third largest exporter in the Página 18 de 21 ISCTE Business School Master in Business Administration world. Also, Portugal leads the world in footwear technology and is Europe's nº3 exporter.
