Clinton, 312.928.0800), housed in the historic Chicago & North Western Railway Powerhouse building, offers classic American cuisine like the Double Cut Iowa Pork Chop ($28). Run by Owner/Partner Jimmy Alexander (Alexander’s Steak House and Pegasus) and Partner/General Manager Mitchell Schmieding (Charlie Trotter’s and Eleven Madison Park in New York City), the upscale restaurant is the result of a major restoration project spearheaded by Chicago-based Parachin Design Studios Ltd. “This restaurant is a product of our collective vision,” says Schmieding. “As a team, we worked very hard to transform this remarkable old building into a modern dining establishment that celebrates Chicago’s industrial past. We’ve given it a modern edge, but there’s still a definite classicism to it. We made a conscious effort to preserve historic elements in a way that reflects Chicago’s great industrial spirit.” Powerhouse offers two dining areas–the main dining room and the bar–and come this spring, powerhouse restaurant and bar 42 will also have a vast 80-seat sidewalk café that will be lined with 14 aromatic organic first on the scene c o n t i n u e d Mike Jettner (Jet’s Public herb and vegetable planters. Why: Because no matter how much Oprah loves them, you can’t bring yourself to buy a pair of Spanx. You’ve tried Buns of Steel, Yogilates and even pole dancing. But yet, you still seem to lack that perfectly toned lower-half. Before you do another fat flush or sign up for Hula Hoop at Crunch, resolve to step into a pair of FitFlops ($45) by Bliss. Unlike your average pair, these flops promise to help tone and trim your calves, thighs and glutes just by trotting around town as usual. Incorporating a patentpending CONTIN U ED micro-wobbleboard FITFLOPS technology, FitFlops promise a workout while you walk, strengthening and engaging muscles that aren’t normally used. No wonder they’ve been spotted on countless celebs and even billed as medical miracles. Just throw them on while you’re running errands and by spring you’ll be ready to bare your buns on North Avenue beach. But, a word to the wise: to avoid frostbite, these flops are best worn inside. Available at Blissworld.com. The Resolution: Turn Green. Why: Because no one wants to sit through another of Al Gore’s acceptance speeches. While we might secretly relish 2007’s unseasonably warm temperatures, global warming is more than just an Inconvenient Truth—it’s a cold reality. And if we keep up our current misuse, the North Avenue Beach lifeguards might soon have a year-round gig. So this year, resolve to give into Gore and pick up one of Noon Solar’s sustainable satchels. Made for people who are equally conscious of style and sustainability, each bag is made with materials that can either biodegrade naturally or be reclaimed and re-used. Their one-of-a-kind Cortland Tote ($383) is carefully crafted from Bavarian sourced, 154 grain leather and naturally dyed hemp. In addition, the piece integrates a flexible solar panel into the body of each bag, allowing it to charge your cell phone or iPod. So the bag functions as a portable, renewable energy source and a powerful way to go green. Noon Solar is available at Pivot Boutique (1101 W. Fulton, 312.243.4754) or online at Noonsolar.com. The Resolution: Stop being a walking zombie. CORTLAND TOTE Why: Because with the money you dropped at Starbucks this year, you could have bought your own franchise. What’s the last thing you bought from a late-night infomercial? A Rocket Chef, Ab Rocker, Oxi Clean?
