July 18-23, 2011 Convening at: Branch Memorial Tabernacle 500 Gulley Street
Convening at: Branch Memorial Tabernacle 500 Gulley Street Goldsboro, North Carolina July 18-23, 2011 Dr. Ernestine H. McGee, President Sister Josephine J. Lee, Vice President Elder Ruby Toodle, 2nd Vice President Rt. Rev. Leamon Dudley, Advisor Rt. Rev. Ralph E. Love, Sr. SDC President From the President’s Desk Dr. Ernestine McGee Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ: “For in Him we live, and move and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, for we are also his offspring”. Acts 17:28 (KJV) I am so very excited about our meeting here this week to celebrate the 94th session of The Home & Foreign Missionary Convention of The Southern District Convocation, of The United Holy Church of America, Inc. Our theme, “Nevertheless, This is the Faith that Makes the Mission of the Church Possible,” suggests that in this season of our lives--this season of turmoil and confusion all over the world--wars, earthquakes in Japan, a serial killer in New York, tornadoes here at home and gasoline prices at an all time high; that sometimes God tests our faith to see if we really trust Him. There is a program that comes on television entitled, what would you do? Today, I wish to ask you a question, If Jesus asked you to do something outrageous, unusual, and strange or demanding, what would you do? How motivated are you to make the most of the faith God has instilled in you? God is the teacher; we are the students. It is the student’s responsibility to learn, not the teacher's obligation to make learning take place. If you had fished all night like Simon and James and John, the sons of Zebedee, and caught nothing and Jesus said, “Launch out into the deep and let down your net for a draught,’ what would you have done? Mission workers, nevertheless, in spite of what it looks like, we must launch out because we are fishers of men. One may be a pastor, evangelist, missionary, deacon, mother or lay member, however if we are not actually seeking and endeavoring to bring souls to Christ, we are not fulfilling our assignment. Let us reach out to our families, to our communities, to our nation and abroad, and tell someone that Jesus still saves. It is my desire that during this convention, God will instill in our hearts the motivation and drive that we need so that we will leave here with a renewed determination to carry out the mandate of Jesus Christ, to launch out and make disciples of all nations. It is my prayer that God ignite the flame that will speed the light forever more. His reign is over men. The Kingdom and the Duty of extending it by missionary effort are not incidental, but in the Bible. The Origin of Mission: The ultimate primary origin is in the Love of God. Our Savior will have all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth. 1 Tim. 2:3-4; John 3:16 The Message of Mission: Call on the name of the Lord and ye shall be saved. Acts 2:21 The Method of Mission: Thus it is written that Christ suffered and rose the third day; repentance and remission of sin should be preached in His name to all nations. Luke 24:46-48 The Motive of Mission: For the love of Christ constraineth us. 2 Cor. 5:14 The Power of Mission: It is the Holy Spirit whom God hath granted to them that obey him. Acts 5:32 The Goal of Mission: It is that every man and woman in all the Earth shall acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and that justice shall reign in all the earth. Rev 11:15 Honorary Person Mother Martha M. Lennon Mother Lennon is the daughter of the late Reverend Paul and Reverend Janie McKelvin. As a teenager, she gave her life to Christ and became a member of the St. James United Holy Church in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She and her husband were joined in holy matrimony on August 10, 1947. They were blessed with a family of four sons and two daughters, adopted and mentored a host of children. Her passion was to always serve in mission and to put a smile on the faces of those hurting. This was her joy; she always did this with great humility and love. In the local church, she served as President of the Mission Department for thirty years, President of the choir, Secretary of Sunday School, and as Sunday School Teacher. Mother Lennon labored in the Sunshine Band with our beloved Velma S. McNatt. Under President Cora M. Dawson, she was mentored by Mother Sellars and assisted her in her declining health as a field worker of the Home and Foreign Missionary Convention Southern District. At the demise of Mother Sellars, Mother Lennon became the field worker of the Home and Foreign Missionary Convention and served for twenty years. With compassion, Mother Lennon served where there was a need-demonstrating a love for the work of mission-assisting with distribution of food, sharing letters of encouragement, providing clothes and gowns to nursing homes. Her smile of hope continued. In 1973, she participated in soliciting ads for a journal for the fifth annual Home and Foreign Missionary Convention with Faith Tabernacle United Holy Church, Washington, North Carolina. She is proud of her work with Mother Ella Yarborough, during her Presidency. She proclaims that ”only what you do for Christ will last” and thank the Lord for all of her achievements, and expresses that those who do God’s will receive God’s Pay. Mother Lennon we honor you for your service to the Southern District Missionary Department. Honorary Person Mother Luvenia B. Franklin Mother Luvenia B. Franklin accepted the Lord Jesus Christ during her early years as a member of Sts. Delight United Holy Church of LaGrange, North Carolina under the leadership of the Late Elder B. B. Dunn. As a lifelong member, Mother Franklin has given years of service in many areas of the church, including choir member, Sunday School Teacher, Usher, Missionary Circle President and Mother which she continues to serve. She began and continues her years of service under the following pastors, the Late Elder B. B. Dunn, Bishop Leamon Dudley and present pastor, Elder Devin C. Pickett, Sr. Mother Franklin’s service in Mission began with home mission from house to house with other mission workers in her local church. They visited rest homes, hospitals and did many local mission projects. Her mission service on the district level began during the presidential term of Mother Cora Dawson, and continued under President Josephine J. Wilson, President Sarah Benjamin and presently, President Ernestine McGee. Mother Franklin works as a finance collector and continues to work as an Eastern District field worker, following in the footsteps of field worker, the late Mother Rosetta F. Best. Mother Luvenia B. Franklin is grateful to God for the many years of service God has allowed her to give. She is a praying Mother and Missionary. She meditates on the Word of God daily and she is a living example for others to follow, especially her children and family. Mother Franklin was married to the Late Charlie James Franklin Sr., and is the mother of one son and two daughters, and grandmother to two granddaughters. To God be the Glory for all the things he has done! Mother Luvenia Best Franklin the Home and Foreign Missionary Department Honors you for your years of dedicated service.
