One last time we are reminded that we Christians have received the Holy Spirit, not for our own benefit, but to enable us to follow our Christian vocation. The centerpiece of the scriptures for Pentecost is the account in Acts of the Apostles of the sending of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. The other readings for this Sunday help us to understand what it means to live out our Christian vocation. Paul’s letter shows us the gifts and fruits that the Holy Spirit gives to us. John’s Gospel reminds us that Jesus has sent all his disciples to share his forgiveness and peace, through the power of the Holy Spirit. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. A Prayer to the Holy Spirit Holy Spirit, who sent Christ Jesus to carry the Good news to the poor, we pray to you: Help us to continue your work by serving the poor, our brothers and sisters. —From Come, Lord Jesus by Lucien Deiss, CSSP, copyright © 1976, 1981, Lucien Deiss. The first gifts are intended for the sanctification of the person receiving them. These are permanent supernatural qualities enabling the graced person to be especially in tune with the workings of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord. The second gifts of the Holy Spirit are called charisms. These are extraordinary favors granted principally for the help of others: speaking with wisdom, speaking with knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, tongues and interpreting speeches. In 1 Corinthians 12:6-11 nine charisms are mentioned. Other passages in St. Paul (such as 1 Corinthians 12:28-31 and Romans 12: 6-8) mention other charisms.
