All Are Sent
Fifty days after Easter Sunday we celebrate the fulfillment of
all God’s promises in the feast of Pentecost, a feast that has
sometimes been called the birthday of the church. One last
time we are reminded that we Christians have received the
Holy Spirit, not for our own benefit, but to enable us to follow
our Christian vocation.
The centerpiece of the scriptures for Pentecost is the account
in Acts of the Apostles of the sending of the Holy Spirit to the
disciples. The other readings for this Sunday help us to understand what it means to live out our Christian vocation. Paul’s
letter shows us the gifts and fruits that the Holy Spirit gives to
us. John’s Gospel reminds us that Jesus has sent all his disciples to share his forgiveness and peace, through the power of
the Holy Spirit.

A Prayer to the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit,
who sent Christ Jesus
to carry the Good news to the poor,
we pray to you:
Help us to continue your work
by serving the poor,
our brothers and sisters.

Did You Know: CyberTipline
fights internet crimes against children.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the
Federal Bureau of Investigation and other government agencies all work together to fight Internet crimes against children.
They’ve established a “CyberTipline,” a reporting mechanism
for cases of child sexual exploitation including child pornography, online enticement of children for sex acts, molestation of
children outside the family, sex tourism of children, child victims of prostitution and unsolicited obscene material sent to a
child. Reports may be made 24-7 online at
www.cybertipline.com or by calling: 1-800-843-5678. For
particular help, please call the Archdiocesan Safeguard the
Children office: 213-637-7227 or 213-637-7650.

Gifts of the Holy Spirit
There are TWO kinds of gifts of the Holy
Spirit. The first gifts are intended for the
sanctification of the person receiving them.
These are permanent supernatural qualities
enabling the graced person to be especially in
tune with the workings of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord.
The second gifts of the Holy Spirit are called charisms.
These are extraordinary favors granted principally for the help
of others: speaking with wisdom, speaking with knowledge,
faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits,
tongues and interpreting speeches.
In 1 Corinthians 12:6-11 nine charisms are mentioned. Other
passages in St. Paul (such as 1 Corinthians 12:28-31 and Romans 12: 6-8) mention other charisms.
