Fr. Kevin Scallon, C.M. travels the
world with Sr. Briege Mckenna giving
retreats and healing conferences for
priests. He shares this beautiful story
from his book I Will Come Myself.
As Fr. Kevin notes the retreat was not going well,
“They sat there, about thirty of them, like a room full of
Buddhas, with their arms folded, projecting an air of
mystical defiance: We shall not be moved.”
Fr. Kevin was accosted by a priest who said “Why all
this talk about the Holy Spirit?”…. He continued…
“You talk like a commercial for instant coffee, except
with you it isn’t instant coffee, but instant Holy Spirit.”
The brother priests all nodded in approval.
Later that day the same priest came running up to Fr.
Kevin and shared this beautiful story: “I was very angry
with Father Kevin and had made up my mind to leave the
retreat. On my way to pick up my things and go home, I
was passing the chapel and for some reason I went in. I
walked up to the tabernacle and said to Jesus,
“Jesus ,You are speaking to him out there. Speak to me
now.” He said, “no sooner were those words out of my
mouth, when suddenly I had a vision. It was like
watching a movie screen.”
“In this vision I was driving my pickup truck up to
my mission house, admiring the flowers and shrubs and
the building which I had designed and constructed with
my own hands. My vision changed and I found myself
inside my house and there were all my possessions in a
great pile in the middle of the floor-my clothes, my
shoes, my book,, etc.; and there was a man with a
gigantic shovel, shoveling everything out through the
back door. When I went over to stop him I found myself
looking into the face of Jesus, who leaned over and put a
finger to my lips and said, “Joseph I have come here to
clean out your house. Go and stand outside.”
The vision changed again. Now I found myself
standing outside watching all my precious possessions
come flying through the air and landing in the yard. As I
looked on I became aware of a woman coming towards
me from my right. I looked around and there was Mary,
the mother of Jesus. I ran over to her and said, “Look
what he is doing to my house.” She stopped me and
said, ‘Joseph, my son, let Him do what must be done.’”
Fr Joseph experienced a tremendous grace that day.
He went to the Lord and the Lord answered his prayer.
Maybe he wants to clean your house as well! Don’t
worry, the Holy Spirit’s timing is perfect and His
presence in the hearts of believers is alive, active, and
real.
Let’s pray for an outpouring of the Spirit on St.
Patrick Church!

Faith Formation News
Preparations for next year are already
beginning. If you have some free time
and would like to share your faith with
the children of our parish, there is currently a need for a
team of Grade 5 catechists and 2 Confirmation
catechists. Please call the Faith Formation Office for
further details.
MINISTRY OF CAREGIVING
Please be aware that there are strict legal and
ethical guidelines regarding patient information given
to clergy. Therefore, if you are hospitalized and desire
pastoral support, please have your family notify the

SUPPORT the RELAY for LIFE TEAM
and help wipe out Cancer
BAPTISM
Do you wish you had one of those bead bracelets that are
all the rage? Support the St. Patrick’s Relay for Life
team by purchasing the St. Patrick’s Bead, designed by
our very own parishioner Emilie Gomes. The bead will
be displayed on Aug. 23rd, after the 10:30 Mass, and is
very modestly priced. Signup for Relay, which will be
held September 17th at the East Haddam Elementary
School, in Moodus, starting at 12 noon, is also
continuing. Support the team by:
Parents intending to have their baby baptized at St.
Patrick Church are required to attend one Baptism
Preparation Session held on a monthly basis. Class
begins at 2:00 p.m. and ends approximately at 4:30
p.m. The next session will be on August 28th in the
workroom of the Parish Center. To register, please
call Mary Kaye Varni at 860-267-9050. Godparents
are encouraged to participate.
1) Signing up online at www.relayforlife.org/easthaddamct
2) Click on Join Team (St. Patrick Church) or if you wish to
use a check, make a donation to the American Cancer
Society and put in the collection tins after Mass.
3) Dedicate a Luminaria to someone fighting cancer or in
memoriam;
4) Join us at 9 P.M. for the Luminaria ceremony when
hundreds of candles in honor or memory of loved ones
touched by cancer are lit and placed around the field as
we walk in silence. It is a heartfelt ceremony of how
cancer touches us all.
So talk to your friends and relatives now, get them
involved, and ask them to help support you. With your
help, we will work towards the day when cancer will be
eliminated.
ADULT CONFIRMATION
Classes will begin in October for adults who have been
baptized and have received First Holy Communion and
are seeking the Sacrament of Confirmation. A series of 8
classes will meet on Sundays in October and February
from 11:30 a.m.— 1:00 p.m. The Sacrament of
Confirmation will be conferred at the Easter Vigil.

Our candle shrine, dedicated to the Divine Mercy
and published in memory of Mary Ann Lambert,
will be dedicated during the 10:30 Mass on Sunday,
August 21, 2011. Devotional candles will remain lit
for three days. A $3 offering per candle is
requested.
The shrine is located in the area
formerly occupied by the organ.

The ACTS Men’s Retreat will be held at the
Immaculata Retreat House in Willimantic. ACTS
stands for Adoration—a call and response to God,

and His people. It is a wonderful opportunity to
draw closer to the Lord and to get to know men here

to Join the Scripture Study Program
St. Patrick's is happy to announce we will be offering
a new Catholic Scripture Study program this year. It's a
28-weekly study of Hebrews and the Epistles of St
James. Dr Scott Hahn and Mark Shea are the authors of
the study commentaries. Hebrews consists of 16 lessons;
James, 12 lessons. Video lectures by priests accompany
each study.
We meet in the Parish Center from 7-8:30 Thursday
evenings. We hope to start by September 15. Cost for the
course is $50 each for the 3-ring Student Study Binder.
The Binder includes the texts of Hebrews & the Epistles
of St James, the Commentaries, Study Questions, and
Suggested Responses. Married couples may pay $50 for
a Binder they are willing to share. You may register

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
(RCIA)
The Catechumenate is the process of welcoming
new members into the Roman Catholic Church. It is
meant for those who are not baptized, those baptized
into the Catholic Church who have not yet received
the sacraments of Eucharist and/or Confirmation.
Inquiry classes have begun and are being held in the
St. Patrick Center.

The Women of Faith conference is, once again, coming
to Hartford, November 10th & 11th! It is one of the
most uplifting and inspiring conferences around! If you
go once…..you’ll be hooked! Last year we reserved 150
tickets for this year’s conference and they are almost all

Pro-Life Mass
Join our Diocesan family for the monthly Pro-Life Mass
on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at 8:30 a.m. at the
Cathedral of St. Patrick in Norwich. Following the
Mass, the Rosary will be prayed both in the Cathedral
and at the Planned Parenthood. Brunch will be served at
the Cathedral after the Rosary. You can make a
difference praying for that unborn baby and their mother
who may be contemplating an abortion.
