MEDICINES ARE THE LEADING CAUSE OF YOUNG CHILDREN
UNDER FIVE BEING ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL FROM POISONING.
Some of these are medicines can be bought from a
range of outlets (such as paracetamol) and others
are prescription medicines (i.e blood pressure
medication or sleeping pills) that may have been
left out by accident.
Treatment tips
Do save vomit, containers
and whatever you suspect has
been swallowed as they could
be needed to help find out
what the poison is.
Do not make the person vomit.
Do not give fluids unless you’re
told to do so by a doctor or the
Poisons Centre.
Do not put a child to bed
unless you have spoken to a
doctor or the Poisons Centre.
Do not rely on first aid
advice on labels, as they are
sometimes incorrect or out
of date.
How to help prevent poisoning in children
• Use child-resistant safety caps, that are designed or constructed
to be difficult for most children aged under 5 to open or be able
to take a toxic amount of the substance but remember
that child-resistant packaging is not completely child-proof
• Keep all potential poisons up high, out of sight, and
well out of reach of children in a locked box
• Install child-proof safety catches on cupboards
• Keep children well supervised when visiting other homes, this
is where poisonings can also occur. And if they’re visiting Nana
and Grandad, make sure all medicines are put out of reach
• Never call medicines "lollies" or encourage regular
use with children when not required
• Talk to your child about the dangers of medicine
and taking too much
• Dispose of unwanted medicines and toxic substances
regularly – talk to the Poisons Centre, your local council or
your local pharmacy team to arrange for their proper disposal
