OBEA'S 2014 FALL CONFERENCE
Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary School, Burlington, Ontario
We are excited to present our 2014 Fall Conference at Dr. Frank J.
Hayden Secondary School. Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary School
has state-of-the-art facilities, which will allow us to offer a wide range of
workshops in a creative and collaborative learning environment. You
will have the opportunity to participate in several hands-on, lab-based
sessions with the latest software and Internet tools in Business
Education. Many of the workshops will be applicable to all subject
areas under the Business Studies umbrella.
We have compiled a roster of talented workshop leaders from various
boards and business organizations who will provide a wealth of
classroom-ready resources. We are confident that you will thoroughly
enjoy the slate of dynamic and innovative presenters we have
assembled!
Integrating computers in the classroom continues to be an essential
component of the Business Studies curriculum. We continue to offer
hands-on workshops featuring differentiated instruction, Web 2.0 tools,
SMART Boards, and smartphone/tablet apps.
This year, our CorporateSponsors, Vendors and Educational Partners
have generously donated many exciting prizes, which will be drawn for
during the conference lunch break. There will also be a special draw at
the conclusion of the conference.
OBEA would like to express our appreciation to Jacqueline Newton,
Principal of Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary School, for providing an
outstanding venue for the Fall Conference.
We encourage you to speak with your school administration and
federation representatives to inquire as to the availability of conference

Let's revisit game creation using PowerPoint and now
Google Docs to spice up your business class. Old
favourites like Jeopardy and Who Wants to Be a
Millionaire will be shown, as well as new games like 'Are
you Smarter than a 12th Grader?' and more. Readymade games will be provided, as well as tips to create
your own.
B1 Mind over Money (Hands-on)
Chris Allum, InvestorEd
Participants will explore relevant, age-appropriate
Financial Literacy resources that are connected to the
curriculum. You will leave with ideas on how to infuse
financial literacy into your classroom.
A2 BOH4M ISU Portfolio Project (Hands-on)
Pieter Toth, Hamilton-Wentworth DSB
This workshop is for teachers interested in developing a
portfolio project as an independent study unit within
BOH4M. Links to curriculum, sample instruction
handouts, and sample portfolios created by students will
be discussed and accessible electronically.
A3 Adobe Photoshop - Get Started
(Part 1 of Hands-on Double Session)
Aaron Casella, Thames Valley DSB
Learn the basic fundamentals of Adobe Photoshop. This
double session will teach you to create and design
projects, as well as manipulate images and photos. In the
end you will be able to produce effective graphic designs
for various projects related to business courses.
A4 Intuit Education Program: Cloud Accounting
QuickBooks Online (Hands-on)
Naaz Fatima Butt, Intuit
Welcome to the Intuit Education Program.
Complimentary cloud-based accounting software QuickBooks Online will be given to educators and
students for academic use. This workshop will provide
participants with a hands-on session.
A5 BTT Cross-Curricular Summative (Hands-on)
Ruth Bretholz, Toronto DSB
This workshop is designed for teachers to share best
practices and cross- curricular initiatives. By combining
BTT skills and other subject specific content, you can aid
your students during their stressful summative period.
We will demonstrate a combined Gr 9/10 summative
activity created with Geography, History and BTT
content.
A6 Tech Tool Smackdown!
Kari Peters, Toronto DSB
This session will explore Web 2.0 tools Smackdown
style! A variety of tools that will engage students through
tech integration will be presented in 3 minute chunks with
time to explore each. Come and play and “tech” up your
business classroom!
A7 Building Community through Experiential Games
(Hands-on)
William Schoenhardt, York Region DSB
Bill may be the only business teacher in the province who
also teaches outdoor experiential education! Drawing on
this experience, Bill will demonstrate experiential games
used to build community in any classroom; and activities
used to debrief many business class scenarios. Come
and have some fun.
B2 Blogging for an Authentic Audience (Hands-on)
Mary Jane Page, Halton DSB
In this digital age students, in order to be relevant, need
to have an online presence to showcase their best work
and their digital profile. Blogging can transform the
culture of learning in your classroom. Participants will
begin using Google Blogger with hands-on activities,
sample blogs, and rubrics.

B4 Summative Activities for Accounting

CPA Ontario is rolling out brand-new cases for both
BAF3M and BAT4M. These teacher-prepared and CPA
Ontario -reviewed cases are anchored in the Ontario
curriculum expectations and are well-suited for use as a
summative activity.
B5 Journey into Hospitality & Tourism
Marketing and Management (Hands-on)

A new Business course, this Interdisciplinary-Studies
course focuses on the basic principles behind Marketing
and Management for the tourism industry. Discover how
this course could enhance the Business program at your
school.
B6 PowToon: 21st Century Presentations
Kara Hiltz, Peel DSB, Laura Pinto, UOIT
PowToon is a web-based application that allows you and
your students to create professional looking, animated
presentations quickly and at no cost. You can create
engaging videos in place of traditional Powerpoint
presentations and export them with the click of a button
to YouTube. Have your students create promotional
videos to enhance their marketing and business plans.
Participants will leave with their first PowToon ready for
use in class on Monday!
B7 Come get BAF3M1 (Hands-on)

That's right. All of it - including the marking! I've
converted my entire course to Google Apps; most of
them are self-marking assessments as well. Come and
I'll show you how to make your own copy and use them
all. No more workbooks! (Basic knowledge of Google
Apps required)
C2 International Business 2014! (Hands-on)

Are your students in tune with the global economy?
Prepare your students for today's knowledge economy!
Projects, presentations, field trips and resources are
presented for your use in BBB4M.
C3 Leadership Venture Culminating Project
Pieter Toth, Hamilton-Wentworth DSB
This workshop is for teachers interested in creating a
BOH4M Culminating Project involving students planning
and implementing a fundraising event. Sample
instruction sheets, curriculum links, student tracking
sheets, and samples of student work will be provided
electronically.
C4 Teaching Accounting with Sage 50
(formally Simply Accounting) (Hands-on)
Marion Majkot, SAGE
You will learn practical exercises, including creating a
company, processing daily transactions, preparing
adjustments and viewing the audit trail. Participants will
be provided with creative ways to use Sage 50 in the
classroom and engage students in the process.
C5 SketchUp for your Business Class
(Part 1 of Hands-on Double Session)
Brian Raposo, York Region DSB
SketchUp is free 3D modeling software that's easy to
learn and incredibly fun to use. Create the ergonomic
office for BTT, design your product prototype for
Marketing or have students build a retail store for BOG.
The possibilities are endless. You will be introduced to
SketchUp with ideas and projects to incorporate this tool
into your business program. Bring your laptop to
download the program.
C6 Smile You're on Camera! - Act 1
(Part 1 of Hands-on Double Session)
Mary Jane Page, Halton DSB
Students can create and edit videos using minimal
equipment and Youtube editor. Participants will set up
their Youtube channel, create a playlist and a short video
or set up a blog. Lessons and materials will be provided.
All of the software used is free.
C7 Budding Entrepreneurs (Hands-on)
Patricia Zorge, CRA
CRA has tools to help budding entrepreneurs get the
right start - Keeping Records, Reporting income and
expenses, Payroll, GST/HST and Preparing T4 & T4A
returns for New Small Businesses. We also provide
financial literacy tools for starting a new small business
that can be developed into a self-directed learning unit in
your business or economics courses.

Infographics are everywhere these days. They tell us
visually-engaging stories with and about data. You can
incorporate their creation and use into all of your
business classes. Learn how to make everything from
high-impact standalone posters to report enhancements
with infographics.
D1 Using Animation for Project-Based
Learnng and Teaching, (Hands-on)
Mitch Lapointe, DSB of Niagara
Having used various forms of web-based software to
demonstrate learning, animation has quickly become my
favourite. Animation is a great way to get students to
engage in higher level thinking. Come and see how
animation can be easily used in your classroom.

Experiences for BOH4M

This workshop will focus on presenting hands-on
leadership, organizational and teamwork activities for
BOH4M. Talking is great, but doing is better. Come and
receive samples of how to increase motivation and
interest while developing employability skills within your
students.
D3 Using Integrative Thinking Techniques in
Business Classes (Hands-on)

This workshop is for teachers who are interested in
learning more about using integrative thinking
techniques in the business classroom. Hands-on
activities, demonstrations, and student work samples
from a full range of business courses will be provided.

business solution that is available for you to use as a
teaching aid in your classroom, whether you are teaching
