"Faith is not a light which scatters all our darkness,
but a lamp which guides our steps in the night and
suffices for the journey. To those who suffer, God does
not provide arguments which explain everything;
rather, his response is that of an accompanying presence, a history of goodness which touches every story
of suffering and opens up a ray of light."

generosity of parishioners, tuition assistance can be offered to any
family in need of financial assistance to start the education process
for their children at St. Mary's Preschool. If you are interested in
contributing, please contact Miss Elena in the Preschool Office.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Recruiting New Lectors
If you have a special devotion to the Word of God, please consider the lector ministry. The parish needs a few well-spoken individuals to serve in this special ministry, particularly at the 7:30 am
and 12:30 pm Masses. The next lector orientation is scheduled for
October. New lectors can be scheduled starting in December. If
you can make a commitment to this ministry, please contact us at
[email protected].
Next Sunday, October 19th:
Diocesan Youth Rally @ Marymount University
(11:30 am - 8:30 pm) Join hundreds of other teens from our diocese for an unforgettable day of music, games, food, and Mass with
Bishop Loverde. This year’s speakers and musicians are incredible, and I will personally give you a refund if you are disappointed by the day. Last year we brought about 40 teens! Cost is $25
per person. EMAIL BRIAN TO RSVP FOR THIS EVENT.
Ushers Wanted
Are you looking for a way to participate in the mass with your family, maybe even gain service hours? We are looking for a few more
ushers for all masses and a few people available for substitutions.
Ushers serve one Mass per month, the same weekend every
month. This is a vital ministry and an opportunity to participate in
the Mass. If you are interested, please contact Joe Osborne at
703-250-8332 or [email protected]. Please consider
helping.
Let us pray for confidence in the abiding presence and goodness
which God will always provide to his children when they suffer.
PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY
Samaritan Fund
Through the Samaritan Fund we are able to help men, women and
children in need, regardless of their race, creed or national origin.
This week your donations assisted a single, unemployed woman who
needed help with her rent. Please pray for those in need and donate
to Saint Mary’s Samaritan Fund, so that we’ll be able to continue
responding as we have done, with prayer and financial assistance.

Hypothermia Prevention Shelter 2015
Do You Need A Walker or Cane?
It is time to start planning for our week of hosting the Hypothermia
Prevention Shelter, January 18 - 24, 2015. During this important and rewarding ministry, we open our doors so that people who
have nowhere to sleep at night can come inside to avoid dangerous
freezing temperatures. We feed them a warm dinner, welcome
them with evening services and activities, watch over them all night,
feed them breakfast, and send them off with bagged lunches to take
with them for the day. All this takes a lot of volunteers, especially
if we get storms and keep the guests during the day, as we did last
year. One of our lessons learned from last year is that we need a
Volunteer Coordinator to help organize and recruit volunteers.
Many of you have told us you feel blessed to have served in this
ministry. If you can help coordinate volunteers, please contact
Anita Keeler and Mary Jo O'Connell, at [email protected]
or Carol Mayfield at [email protected].
A parishioner has offered the donation of wheeled walkers, one
standard walker and one HurryCane to be given to individuals who
are in need of the item(s) and are financially unable to afford
them. Please call St. Mary’s at 703-978-4141, x19 to inquire.
Would the winner of the Gabriel Project Baby Shower tea basket
please stop in the Parish Office. The prize had two parts.
We Need More Helpers!
We would not be able to maintain our food pantry ministry without
our dedicated volunteers. As the school year begins and students
and their families are considering community service, why not
think about helping with Saint Mary’s food pantry? Maybe you
would like to help get brown bags ready for distribution, or to
spend some time some Sunday afternoon re-stocking the pantry, or
to pack food for distribution to organizations or a family. Students
and families need service opportunities and we need volunteers.
It’s a match made in heaven! No prior experience is necessary!
