study church documents, and have the encouragement of others
who understand and share your struggles?

Please join us for this month's Drinks
with Dominicans on Tuesday,
October 28, at 7:30 PM at the Blue
Star Café.
We welcome Tricia Bolle, founder of
the St. Francis Xavier Lay Missionary
Society. Tricia has been serving in mission in Asia for
nearly seven years and is recently back from her latest trip.
To more fully understand the Catholic Church in China,
one must look beyond the headlines and the politics to
understand the people.
Who are China's Catholics and what is the society like in
which they live? What is the history of Christianity in
China and what is the face of Christ's Church like today in
mainland China? What are some of the challenges that
China's Christians face and how does the beauty of our
faith reveal itself among our Chinese Christian brothers
and sisters? Tricia will speak about the Church in Asia and
the opportunities for Catholic laity to serve in places like
Hong Kong and other parts of Asia.

JOHN PAUL II’S PILGRIMAGE
TO POLAND IN JUNE 1979:
How Poland’s Communists
Interpreted It
Presented by Prof. James Felak
October 22, at 7:30 PM
Walker-Ames Room at Kane Hall,
UW Campus
FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
The dramatic visit of Pope John Paul II to his native Poland in
June 1979 was one of the most significant events of the
twentieth century. Professor James Felak will draw from his
research at the Archiwum Akt Nowych (The Central Archives of
Modern Records) and Instytut Pamięci Narodowej (The
Institute of National Remembrance) in Warsaw to examine how
Poland‟s Communist regime, in its internal reports,
characterized and analyzed this papal pilgrimage.
James Felak has been Professor of History at the University of
Washington since 1989. He is a familiar and long-time member
of Blessed Sacrament Parish.

Navigating the Elder Care Maze
“I need to find assisted living for my mom.”
“My father-in-law doesn’t drive and can’t use Metro. He
needs information on transportation options.”
“I'm providing regular care for my adult son who has a
disability. I need help!” “Who do I call?!”
Finding help for an older adult can be a daunting task.
Fortunately, two local programs provide guidance in navigating
the maze of community and government programs:
Senior Information & Assistance (1-8884ELDERS) is the go-to number for anyone age
60+ and their family members who needs help
identifying resources that meet their needs. Visit
www.agingkingcounty.org
The King County Caregiver Support Network provides
guidance to unpaid primary caregivers of adults of any age who
are unable to care for themselves - typically family members or
close friends or neighbors. Visit www.kccaregiver.org
Aging and Disability Services (ADS), the Area
Agency on Aging for Seattle-King County,
currently funds both programs. In the coming
year, services may be enhanced to help a
broader range of older adults and individuals
with disabilities plan to live independently in the community.
Pastor’s corner
I can do all things in him who strengthens me. Still, it was kind of
you to share in my distress. Philippians 4:13-14
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Ups and downs characterize human life.
We have smooth-sailing days and choppy
water days, times of joy and times of
sorrow. The Gospel does not change this
fundamental reality; it does, however,
give us a new perspective by which we
interpret our experience. St. Paul refers
to this insight in his letter to the Philippians: “In every
circumstance and in all things I have learned the secret of
being well fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance and
of being in need.” (4:12) What is the “secret”? St. Paul‟s
secret is faith in Christ that gives him hope of eternal life. In
other words, he affirms by faith that God desires everyone to
be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth (1 Tm 2:4);
this faith strengthens his hope that God will provide for his
deepest needs and the needs of all from the overflowing
goodness of divine love.
There is great strength in this truth for all of us as well, we
who are called to be evangelists and missionaries in the 21st
century. We, too, can do all things in Christ who strengthens
us; by faith in him we can heal wounds in our own lives and
may even find he works through us to bring new light to those
who are in darkness. Our resulting courage emboldens us to
consider all our daily circumstances as a means for covering
the nakedness of sin with the wedding garment of Christ‟s
charity. Moreover, our courageous faith diffuses itself and
enlivens others; I certainly have found great strength and
consolation in your faith-filled and prayerful support for the
Dominicans here and throughout the Province.
In a particular way, I want to express my profound gratitude
for your generosity with our Rosary Sunday appeal. We have
received many gifts of prayer and more than $20,000 to this
point. Indeed, it is kind of you to share with us in our need!
The support you give our brothers in formation bears much
fruit and produces preachers who will continue to go out and
invite whomever they find to the Father‟s feast. If you have
not had a chance to return your Rosary Sunday envelopes, I
invite you to mail them in or place them in our collection
basket; every gift helps spread the good news of salvation.
Thank you.

Fr John Marie, OP
reflecting Christ Stories
Our Reflecting Christ story
this week is based on an
account that appeared in the
Christian periodical,
Guideposts, and was shared by
one of our parishioners.
A local fire department responded to a mobile home fire only
to discover, upon arrival, that a water fixture on-site had
ruptured and doused the flames. The fire crew, which had
been energized and focused on fighting a fire, experienced a bit
of a let-down instead. They went through their routine
procedures to make sure the fire would not reignite. Most of
the crew gathered near the engine to relax and 'smoke and
joke' while they waited for the „all clear‟ -- all except Pete.
He wasn't like most of the guys. Instead, he had removed his
helmet and was talking to a child who apparently lived in the
mobile home. Pete asked the little boy if he was scared. The
child didn't answer, but instead hugged Pete's waist and buried
his head there as he cried.
The story‟s author then reflected that, in some ways, a fire
crew is not that different from a church community. They can
both be characterized by close fellowships in which members
share strong intimacy between one another. By the same
token, it's easy for both groups to focus internally and ignore
the needs of others just outside their circles. Pete's example
was a graphic reminder to the author that we all need to
remain aware of those nearby who may need our time and
attention. In the midst of our work, play, or fellowship,
Christ asks us to first see the one nearby who is hurt, thirsty,
lonely or in need. Then, find a way to be present to them -recognizing their humanity and responding in love accordingly.
The Scriptures tell us that this is how we express our love to
God. This is how we slowly, day-by-day, bring his kingdom
into greater fullness, right here, right now. This is what we
mean when we say our goal is to 'See the face of Christ, and be
the face of Christ.' Amen.
God's blessing,
Walt Sears
This was a real-world situation in which a one person saw Christ in
another, and subsequently become Christ to her neighbor. You see
situations and circumstances like this every day.
