High School at the JCU Residential
Camp which was run at the Townsville
campus for one week during the June/
July school holidays.
The camp gave Chance Clemments,
Jamarlia Coutts, Jordan-Rose Mizzi
and Tia-Ann Pryor the opportunity to
experience university life including
residential living.

The students engaged with current JCU Student Ambassadors
and university staff in a range of activities focusing on:
 raising aspirations to, and awareness of, tertiary study

 team building activities to build capacity for group work
 social interaction with peers to build social skills and confidence
 empowerment activities for increased self-esteem and self-efficacy

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE…...By Justin Kuskie, Principal (Acting)
As we move into the final days of Term 3 and look forward to
the school holidays, it is timely to reflect of our achievements
for the term along with finalising the planning for the
remainder of the school year. As I wrote in our last WHASH
three weeks ago, the articles included in our newsletters, as
comprehensive as they are, cannot do complete justice of
what happens every day in our school. Especially in respect
to what occurs as part of our ‘core business’ during our regular classes. I would like to acknowledge the combined efforts of
our staff working together with our students and families in providing quality learning opportunities.
In life and in schools, things sometimes do not always go as planned and adjustments need to be made. At the beginning of
the term I charged our staff and students to adopt a “no excuses” mindset and will continue working with our school community to ensure this attitude
positions us well to continue supporting our young people with their endeavours and education.
At a school level we are currently reviewing our term and year so far, to specifically target areas where further growth would be beneficial to the school
with the intent to put our learnings into action as soon as possible. I encourage every student to look back over the last term and year asking
themselves if they are satisfied with their performance and whether they are tracking towards their goals. This process would be best done through
conversations with family members or other supporting adults, discussing what has worked well for their learning this term and what they need to
change about their learning plan. Hard work and consistent effort needs to be celebrated.
It is also very important for students to give themselves a break. A change of routine, time spent with family and friends and well deserved down-time
are very important for brain health and mental endurance. Term 4 is always very busy and students who have used their break time to recharge and
reflect will be better prepared for the rigours of the final term.
On a personal note, I would like to thank the Ingham SHS and wider Hinchinbrook community for the support and welcoming acceptance myself and my
family have experienced in the 10 weeks we have been in Ingham. I am looking forward to what will be a hectic, but productive and rewarding Term 4.

SENIOR SECONDARY BRIEF…By Tony Byrnes, Deputy Principal
For our senior students the past couple of weeks
have been significantly busy. On Tuesday 2 and
Wednesday 3 September, our Year 12 students sat
the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test which
covers 49 ‘common curriculum elements’ such as
analysing, hypothesising, or estimating. This is the
biggest team activity that they undertake, as they
strive to make sure that all of their hard work over
the past 21 months of study is reflected in the
results they achieve as a group and in subject
groups. We are very proud of the hard work of our
Year 12 students and wish them well with their results.
Students will receive their QCS Test grade, OP and any relevant FPs (Field
Positions) with their final subject results in December. These results will be
sent by mail, but can also be obtained through their Student Learning Account
on Saturday 20 December at www.studentconnect.qcaa.qld.edu.au, by
logging in with their Learner Unique Identifier (LUI) and password.
Another big event last week in our Senior School calendar was the Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan interviews. Our Year 10 students all
attended meetings with their parents and staff to finalise and record their Senior Education and Training Plans. These plans link their future study plans
to career aspirations and form a key part of the mentoring program they are about to start. Our staff enjoyed the opportunity to connect with families and
to have such productive conversations.
At our school, the extension of student learning beyond OP (University subjects) is continually extending. The scope to deliver certificate courses, online
courses, TAFE courses, traineeships and apprenticeships (SAT) enables a curriculum that may more closely align a student’s destination. However, it
should also be noted that the school aims to give a solid platform of learning that does not have to be specific, but can in fact remain broad to allow for
flexibility in student post career/study options. What the school does insist on is creating a QCE of completion, a certificate course and/or an OP of
worth. We trust that our partnership with your child, you, industry, Universities/TAFEs will guide your child in the senior years of education at Ingham

HAPPY
HOLIDAYS!
From the Junior Secondary Team
On Friday 12 September Ingham State High School hosted the “Fun and Friendship Day” transition activity for our
Year 6 and Year 7 students who will soon make the exciting journey across to Secondary School.
The day started off at school so that students could be placed into teams by staff, including Mrs Ruggieri and her
band of helpful TIP Leaders. Then buses transported our eager students to Lucinda where Ms Rand and Mrs
Blackford were waiting for them after setting up “The Amazing Race” course.
Before jumping into the challenge there was an overview of the day with some expectations and boundaries pointed out. Students participated in the
activity “Who are You?” where they spread out across the park in the shade to answer a questionnaire and then were encouraged by staff to find
another student in their team who had the same answers. This proved a little difficult as most of the children were a bit shy at first!
This was followed by morning tea, as we were all a little peckish by now and needed to get
our energy levels up for the fun that was to follow! Students then played the game
“Clumps”, led by Mr Hall, in an attempt to get students into new groups with people they
might not know very well—although it was hard for them to break away from their current
friends and school mates!
In their new teams, students were given a folder with “The Amazing Race” course
checkpoints that needed to be signed by a teacher once each challenge was completed. A
code word was also provided by staff so that no group could ‘fudge’ a signature and of
course no teams were prepared to share their code words, as there was a prize for the
winning team who completed the most challenges for the day!
Everyone was bursting with excitement as the whistle blew to start the race with the
course carefully set out over the park and down onto the beach. Teams rushed off to
knock over (literally!) as many challenges as they could, contributing their knowledge to
answering some brain-teasers and quiz questions as well as utilising problem-solving skills
to finish the more physical tasks.
One challenge included visiting the Sausage Man, Mr Christopher, to cook 10 snags—this
helped prepare lunch and by the time the whistle blew we had all worked up an appetite!
The Sausage Man couldn’t keep up and had to put a few more snags on the barbeque to
satisfy grumbling tummies! (A big thankyou to the TIP Leaders and staff who helped to
serve the never-ending line and assisted in cleaning up afterwards.)
Once bellies were full and everyone had a chance to feel rested, it was time to get back
into finishing the race. Two groups completed the whole course in the remaining time,
which I’m quite certain might have been a first! Alas, all good things must come to an end
and so the whistle signifying the end of the day, brought all the students back to the park
for their presentation ceremony and to congratulate them on an “Amazing Effort!”
Thank you to all of the Ingham High staff who supported the day, without you it would not
have been possible and I’m sure you will agree that seeing so many kids have a wonderful
time while getting to know other students was well worth the effort!

On 6 August all Year 9 students travelled to Tully for the Skills Day Out.
This excursion allowed the Year 9 students an insight into various trades
and professions for young people by giving advice to the students regarding
subject selection and career path choices.

All students participated in the activities that each display offered, including
welding, using routing power tools, surveying, childcare activities and even
competing in a tyre changing competition held by TAFE Cairns. The
students came back with an assortment of information and other goodies
that were handed out by the display staff.
All students were very well behaved and showed great enthusiasm on the
day, which is a true testament to their character and values.
Congratulations Year 9! I am proud to be a part this cohort and I am sure
that in future years they will continue to demonstrate the Ingham State High
School values with upmost integrity.

Defensive Driving Course for Senior Students
On Wednesday 6 August for the umpteenth year now, twenty-four Year 12 students travelled down to
Townsville to participate in a Defensive Driving Course with Safe Drive Training.
The day consisted of two parts. The first part was theory, where experienced driver trainers showed the
students the pitfalls of bad driver habits. A combination of their experience and also a PowerPoint
presentation showed what to do and what not to do.
The second part of the day was the practical component. A fleet of three cars were provided for the
students to test how much they knew (or didn’t know) about driving. Everything from how a driver should
set up the car seat, through to what to do in an emergency situation.
Students enjoyed the experience and all came away having learnt something which may save their life.
All students who undertook the course received a certificate upon completion.

SCHOOL BASED TRAINEESHIPS AND APPRENTICESHIPS UPDATE
Year 11 student, Tayla Collins-Furber, is paving her pathway
to becoming a Hairdresser. Tayla was recently signed up with
LaDah to complete Certificate II in Hairdressing, combining
working with training both on and off the job.

Jack Barratt, Year 11, is undertaking a School Based
Apprenticeship with Michael Bartolini Concreting and
will be working towards a Certificate III in Concreting. Jack
is on-the-job every Wednesday, learning new skills and
putting them into practice.

Last term the Year 10 students went on their annual camp to Echo Creek Adventure Camp,
which is located near Tully. The students spent the four days abseiling, bush walking, raft
building, laser tagging, kayaking and participating in a gruelling obstacle course. All students
had a great week getting wet, muddy and testing their endurance skills while demonstrating
great team work and enthusiasm throughout all activities.
Night time activities such as damper making, board games and table tennis added to the busy
days at camp, but also allowed the students to relax and enjoy the camp facilities. All students
were responsible for organising their own meals, cleaning up after meals and most importantly,
getting out of bed at 6:00 am.
Every student pulled their weight at meal time by helping Helene Bertone, our School Chaplain,
with the food preparation. Helene did a tremendous job of organising and feeding fifty students
and deserves a medal for her effort. I am sure that everyone appreciated the cooked meals and
delicious desserts. Thanks Helene.
Many friendships were made as the Year 10 students keenly participated in the activities, which
showed the true Ingham State High School values of Organisation, Persistence, Getting Along,
Resilience and Confidence. I am proud to be a part of this Year 10 cohort and I am sure that
this camp will be remembered by all the students as the best yet. Great work Year 10!

INTERHOUSE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Going into our last major Interhouse Carnival for the year, students from all four houses were
eager to participate. With the 1500 metres and high jump events being held prior to the main
day, Fantome had a decisive lead over the other three houses. All House Captains wanted to
avoid the wooden spoon and consequently encouraged their housemates to participate in any
and all events. Participation was extremely high on the day, with many age groups having to
have multiple races. Congratulations to all students who participated in any event.

With seven of the Age Champions coming from Palm, it was a good bet that Palm had the

Congratulations to Palm house on the victory! With their clean sweep at the Swimming Carnival
and Fantome and Hinchinbrook each taking out Cross Country trophies, Orpheus are the only
house not to take out a major trophy this year. Better luck next year Orpheus!
With the mass participation from students, staff members felt the pressure to get involved. All four
houses fielded a staff relay team, with Fantome heralded as the early favourites. However, Hinchinbrook teachers looked to have the race in the bag
until Mr Hoyle tore his hamstring at the 80 metre mark in his leg of the relay. This gave Miss Hobbs only a 10 metre head start instead of the likely 20
metres. This was no challenge for Mr Hall, a known sprinter, quickly chasing down first place and giving Fantome the victory.
Congratulations to all staff and students who were involved on the day. The students’ behaviour and attitude was superb, making for a fun and
enjoyable day for everyone. A huge thank you must go to the Ingham High staff for their invaluable help in running a successful carnival. Finally, thank
you to the Herbert River Athletics Club for their support and the use of their grounds for the carnival.

Friday 29 August saw students from Ingham State High School, Gilroy Santa Maria College and
St Teresa’s College Abergowrie, compete in the Herbert River Secondary Schools Athletics
Carnival at George Day Oval. After initially being postponed due to rain, the weather could not
have been better for a day filled with running, jumping and throwing. Students from all three
schools came out in force, wearing their school colours and cheering on their school mates.
Competition was tough throughout the day, with many events being closely contested. Students
accrued points in all events over the day, with the student with the highest amount of points in
their age group being awarded Age Champion.

After our Interhouse Carnival, Ingham High staff were again keen to participate in a staff relay.
Ingham High showed how keen they were, being first team to marshal. Abergowrie and Gilroy
wouldn’t give up easily though, both fielding teams. The race was close between Ingham High
and Abergowrie coming into the final leg of the relay. However, Mr Byrnes showed his sprinting
ability and took victory for Ingham High.
Local athletics legend, George Day, was on hand throughout the day, lending his knowledge to
both staff and students. Mr Day presented the Boys Aggregate trophies, of which St Teresa’s
College took a clean sweep, winning the Junior, Senior and Overall Boys trophies. Another local
athletics champion, Jenny Lynn, presented the Girls Aggregate trophies. With the contest only
between Ingham High and Gilroy Santa Maria College, Ingham High also had a clean sweep,
being named Junior, Senior and Overall Girls Champions.
To add to the excitement of the day, radio station 102.3 4TO FM broadcasted from the event
from 9 am—1 pm. Minty and the team spoke to students and staff on the day, while also
promoting the carnival and the schools involved over the airwaves. This broadcast was
organised by the Hinchinbrook Shire 4850 Promo Group who are a group of local businesses
who promote the Ingham community, including their businesses and schools. Special thanks
must go to Tammy Castles and this group of businesses for their efforts in shining a light on our
community.
Students must be congratulated for their fantastic behaviour, attitude and sportsmanship shown
on the day. Comments from staff and parents from other schools acknowledge this wonderful
behaviour. A very big thank you to all staff and parents who helped out on the day; a successful
carnival cannot be run without you. On behalf of Ingham High, a huge thank you to the Herbert
River Athletics Club for the use of their grounds and their support with the running of the
carnival. We look forward to a bigger and better carnival next year.

Ingham High were fortunate enough to have 15 students selected in the Herbert River Athletics
Team. The following students travelled to Townsville along with students from Gilroy Santa
Maria College and St Teresa’s College Abergowrie on Friday 5 September to compete at the
North Queensland Athletics Trials:

All students performed well on the day, representing Ingham High to the best
of their ability. The Herbert River Team performed extremely well, having
several students selected in the North Queensland Team. Ingham High had
three students selected. Kayden Caruana came first in the 100 metre and
200 metre sprints, resulting in him being selected for both of these events, as
well as the 4 x 100 metre relay team. Jessica Carey ran a good time in the
200 metre sprint, resulting in her being selected to represent North
Queensland. Trevor Scipilliti threw a personal best in the Open Boys
javelin. This throw resulted in him winning the event and being selected in the
North Queensland team.

On the weekend of 23 and 24 August,
Ingham High sent three teams to compete
in the North Queensland All Schools’
Touch Football Championships. Ingham
High had teams in the 13 Years Mixed,
Junior Girls (15 Years and under) and the Open Mixed divisions. Students travelled to Townsville to compete
against teams from Bowen, Burdekin, Charters Towers and Townsville.

TOUCH FOOTBALL
All students played extremely well, with all teams improving over the weekend. The attitude and behaviour
shown by all students was exemplary. The 13 Years Mixed team made the semi-finals where they played
very well, but were unfortunate to not progress to the final. The Junior Girls played extremely well in a tough
division, but narrowly missed out on a semi-final berth. Comprised of mainly 14 year old girls, this team has a
lot of potential for next year. The Open Mixed team improved over the weekend, making it into their semifinal. Although we scored the first try of the game, Bowen were too strong, ending our hopes of a grand final
berth.
Congratulations to all students who competed over the weekend, you really showed off the Ingham High
spirit. A special thank you to Mr Brown, Mrs Kuskie and Miss O’Callaghan for their efforts in coaching the
teams over the weekend. Also, a special mention to Brody Di Bella who put up his hand to umpire over the
weekend – your efforts are greatly appreciated. Finally, a very big thank you to all parents who travelled to
Townsville to support their students and Ingham High. As always, we cannot participate in these events
without your encouragement and support.
