His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Cong: “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. Lead: As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. Cong: While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Lead: After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. Together: “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing. October 12, 2014, Galatians 5:16-23 “Walk By The Spirit” Lead: So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. Cong: For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. Lead: But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; Cong: idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions Lead: and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. Together: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Cong: The Lord is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does. Lead: The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. Cong: He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them. Lead: The Lord watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy. Together: My mouth will speak in praise of the Lord. Let every creature praise his holy name forever and ever. October 26, 2014, Philippians 4:4-9 “The Peace Of God” Lead: Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Cong: Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Lead: Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Cong: And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Lead: Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy— think about such things. Together: Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Page 6 Vernon Park Church of God Happy Sweetest Day - October 18, 2014 Bennie & Alma On November 18th, Bennie and Alma Smith will be married 25 years. It all started when they met here in church following an introduction by a mutual friend. Bennie has served on the Deacon Board and was its President for many years. Alma continues to serve in several ministries. Those include the adult choir, the Seniors and Hospitality ministries. “I just enjoy working wherever I’m needed, even in the kitchen”, she says. Although they have children from previous marriages, it was important to their relationship to embrace each other’s children. “That makes your relationship stronger”, says Alma. She adds that the best thing about being married is loving someone that loves the Lord and loves you and that you can communicate with each other and “knowing that someone always has your back”. Bennie says that marrying a spiritual woman who you can get along with is the best thing about being married. Patrick & Denee’ Patrick and Denee’ Dent celebrated four years of marriage on September 3rd. Denee’ says, “What attracted me to him was that he’s handsome, has a good personality and a gentleman”. On the other hand, what got Patrick’s attention toward Denee’ is her honesty. Here at church, Patrick is a member of the Sanctuary Choir and the M.A.N. Choir. Denee’ is also a member of the Sanctuary Choir and serves as the Advocacy Coordinator of the Advocacy Ministry. Patrick is a retired worker in the manufacturing industry. Denee’ has worked in several industries, most recently as a manager in a retail clothing store. She is working towards her certification in computer repair. Denee’ says the best thing about being married is the companionship. “Somebody to talk to that understands me.” Patrick says that the best thing about being married is “having somebody there when you need them.” Page 7 Vernon Park Church of God Announcements Congratulations! Congratulations to the Morgan Park High School Varsity Baseball Team for winning the Illinois State 3A Championship. With all of the attention paid to the Jackie Robinson West baseball team for winning the United States Little League Championship (and rightfully so), let’s not forget Vernon Park’s own Mike McKinnis, his son Elijah and the Morgan Park Mustangs for being the Illinois 3A Baseball champion. To win the championship, the Mustangs beat Taft High School by the score of 9 to 5 winning the Chicago Public Schools City Varsity Championship. The following week they took on Evergreen Park for the State 3A title and won by the score of 2 to 1. The Mustangs’ overall record for the 2014 season was 21-8-1. “Dad” Mike McKinnis served as pitching coach to the varsity team and head coach for the freshmen team. Son Elijah McKinnis played in multiple roles with the Mustangs. He was the team’s designated hitter and platooned with another senior as first baseman. “We also used him as a starting pitcher. But near the end of the season, we put him in the position of closing pitcher”, says Mike. Elijah is currently attending Albany State University in Georgia on a baseball scholarship. His major is mass communications with an emphasis in broadcast journalism. Mike McKinnis adds, “I'm very proud of Elijah. He held on to his faith in God and excelled both on and off the field. Vernon Park Church of God is seeking a dedicated, qualified and enthusiastic individual to lead our Fine Arts Ministry. The Fine Arts Director will create, coordinate and train all ages in areas of Liturgical Dance and other related forms of movement worship. The Fine Arts Director must be trained in dance technique and performance as well as biblical understanding and will work closely with Media and Worship Arts Directors. Ministry responsibility and requirement sheets are available in the church office. Interviews will be scheduled through the Body Life Pastor’s office and conducted in October.
