APTA - Serving Philately since 1948
A P TA P r es i de n t ’ s R e p o r t
Dear Collector,
Welcome to the October 2014 e-Newsletter.
The following two months offer a number of exciting events
for three states. As promoted in the last few months, South Australia will open the
philatelic festivities with the Adelaide STAMPEX 2014 will be held at the Drill Hall,
Torrens Parade Grounds, King William Rd on the 10th, 11th and 12th of October.
There will be a number of local stamp dealers attending this event, including APTA
dealers, such as Ace Stamp Auctions, Edlins/Capital Collectables, Euro-Yu Oz, John
& Jan Fitzpatrick (NZ), Leo Jakimow, Phoenix Auctions, Pittwater Philatelic Service,
Premier Postal Auctions, Richard Juzwin and Tony Shields Stamps & Coins.
Moving into Victoria, VICPEX 2014 will be held at the Geelong West Town Hall,
Pakingham St on the
11th of October.
A number of local
dealers will attend the
show, including APTA’s
Cover Connection and
Watermans Coins &
Banknotes.
Both shows will offer
you a free admission
and it’s the best
opportunity to bring
along your philatelic
Show venues for the remaining year (clockwise from top friends or family
left): Adelaide STAMPEX 2014, VICPEX 2014, ANDA/ members and
celebrate stamp
APTA Sydney Show and APTA/ANDA Melbourne Show
collecting. For the
serious and novice
philatelists, the exhibits at these two shows will educate and offer useful hints about
exhibiting a stamp collection; certainly a warm-up to the Sydney Stamp Exhibition
2015 ANZAC Centenary in next April.
Moving along into October, the ANDA / APTA Coin, Banknote and Stamp Show will
be held in Sydney, at the Lower Town Hall on the 24th and 25th of the month.
The opening times are from Noon to 8pm on Friday, and from 10am to 5pm on
Saturday.
The participating APTA dealers are : Brisbane Stamps / Troy Sequeira - Brisbane,
QLD; Burstamp - Burpengary, QLD; Coinsearch - Noosa, QLD; Edlins/Capital
Collectibles – Belconnen, ACT; Euro-Yu Oz – Coolum Beach, QLD; Renniks
Publications P/L – Banksmeadow, NSW; Richard Juzwin Stamps - Hawthorn, VIC;
Salamanca Rare Coins - Hobart, TAS; Trevor Wilkin Banknotes – Cammeray,
NSW; Universal Coin Co. – Melbourne, VIC and Waterman's Coins and Banknotes
– Greenvale, VIC
Australian Gold & Silver Exchange - Sydney, NSW; Bullion List Pty Ltd - Parramatta
NSW; Canberra Numisco - Canberra, ACT; Downies – Melbourne, VIC and Sydney,
NSW; Drake Sterling Numismatics - Sydney, NSW; International Auction Galleries
– Gold Coast, QLD; Klaus Ford Numismatics – Sunshine, VIC; Pacific Rim Coins Sydney, NSW; Prospect Coins – Blacktown, NSW; Roxbury's Auction House –
Spring Hill, QLD; Sterling and Currency – Fremantle, WA; The Perth Mint – Perth,
WA; The Royal Australian Mint - Dennison, ACT; Tony James Noteworld,
Maroubra, NSW and vpcoins – Mt Gravatt, QLD.
Therefore, this month presents philatelists and friends in three Australian States the
ideal time to review your philatelic collection and make preparations for upgrading or
rationalising it.
Later in November, we have the APTA / ANDA Melbourne Stamp, Coin & Banknote
Show at the traditional and popular Malvern Town Hall . The dates for this show
are Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th of November. The opening hours are from 10am
to 5pm for both days and admission is $5 for adults for a single day, or $8 for both
days. Accompanied children under the age of 15 can enter for free.
Most of the attending dealers at the July 2014 Malvern Town Hall Show are
expected to attend this November’s Show and details will be firmed later this month.
Our APTA members will be able to assist you with any philatelic or collectable needs
you may have. With their experience of many years in the trade and with their
established network of stamp dealers, locating the elusive stamp for completing your
project will shave a better chance. Remember that your collecting passion is also
the mission for APTA dealers. They are here to give you the best advice possible,
and for realising your collecting aims.
Finally, it is my pleasure to again bring to your attention the significant philatelic
event coming up in next April, the Sydney Stamp EXPO 2015 ANZAC Centenary!
The dates for this exclusive event are from Thursday 16th April to Sunday 19th April
2015. This event is organised between APTA and the Philatelic Association of NSW
(PHILAS) and will be held at the Johnny Warren Indoor Sports Centre (Hurstville
Recreational Centre), corner of Forest & King George Roads, Hurstville, NSW.
The theme of this major event will be the ANZAC Centenary, commemorating the
sacrifices made by Australia and New Zealand during World War One.

What’s News at Rod Perry’s Postal History (RAP) - Address & phone no change
Rod Perry’s Postal History (known also as The
National Stamp Gallery) has moved from its
premises.
You can reach Rod via his postal address, which is PO
Box 122, Port Douglas, QLD, 4877, Australia.
Rodney’s email is [email protected] and he can be
contacted on a new number (07) 4098 0098.
Rodney A Perry (rap) has been a Philatelic trader since
1962. Rod established Rodney A Perry Auction
Galleries in 1971 and sold 30 years later. The
Auction House was rebranded as Millennium Philatelic
Auctions. For ten years from 1992, Rod was
proprietor of Brusden-White Publishing, publisher of
The Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue,
established in 1926. During that decade of
ownership, with the inimitable Geoff Kellow as Editor
(which remains the situation), an ambitious
programme to completely rewrite the catalogue was
undertaken. By the time the rights
to the catalogue were sold (to the
consortium which bought the
Auction House), the rewrite,
embracing Australian
Commonwealth stamp issues or
their development from 1901 to
2001, was completed.
The catalogue was awarded a
Gold Medal at the International
Exhibition ITALIA 98.
Club International, achieved for his
Grand Prix Victoria at AUSIPEX 84.
Rod controls an enormous
accumulation of Australian and
World covers and Stationery,
gathered during five decades of
philatelic trading. The strength of
this stock reposes largely in 20th
century material, with a preponderance for items
destined for Australasia, in the case of material
originating abroad. Your enquiries are most welcome.
Rod has been a collector since 1955 and presently is
developing a series of cover / stationery collections
which have as their common theme Australasia as a
destination.
Rod Perry’s Postal History is proud member of ASDA,
APS (#074745), PTS and APTA.

What’s News at Phoenix Auctions - Auction #33 & #34 - Sat 25th October
Winner of 2012 APTA Award for
Auction House of the Year
Auction #33
Victorian Woodblocks of Roland Geitenbeek
Sat 25th October 2014, 11am
It gives us great pleasure to present to Roland
Geitenbeek’s fabulous International Gold Medal
‘Woodblocks of Victoria’.
A collection as comprehensive as this is one, is one of the
rare occasions that the collector is offered essentially
everything that is available to be offered in the one
auction. No more searching for years to find those elusive
items. Roland is aware that having so much on offer may
stretch a few budgets and he has authorised us to
consider any requests for a payment plan. If you feel this
will be helpful, contact us and David or Ken will discuss
the possibilities with you. Please however do this prior to
the auction and not afterwards.
While only 4 face-different stamps are involved, this
collection covers the fascinating transition period from
imperforate to perforated stamps with all the
experimental separations that were used before finally
settling down to standard perforators. The number of
different perforators is quite surprising with the 6d orange
having nine different types offered here, far more than
are catalogued. In the past many of these were
considered un-official or private, however most specialist
now consider that nearly all of them were officially
sanctioned.
While on the topic of inadequate stamp catalogues, it is
worth pointing out that the 1/- Registered in fact has two
Dies which are easily identifiable and just as significant as
the Kangaroo dies or the various Key Plate dies used by
many British Commonwealth countries. The inclusions the
two dies in the catalogues is well overdue. The breadth of
material being offered is quite amazing. There are a
www.apta.com.au
number of Proofs and
Essays, many Specimen
overprints, mint and used
stamps, many with the
largest known multiples in
private hands. Naturally
there is a great range of
covers, virtually all in wonderful condition. There are
examples to may destinations, including China and The
Philippines. Many different postal rates and routes are
presented here. The number of Too Late and Registered
covers is staggering. This collection has more than all the
other private collections combined.
The overall quality of the items this collection represents
the best that is available and this becomes truly apparent
when looking at the stamps in the many plating studies
where almost every stamp is first-grade or close to it.
We would like to thank Roland for allowing us to offer his
collection and we are sure that all collectors of this area
will find items for their collection.
Auction #34 - KGV Heads
Sat 25th October 2014, 1pm
This is a specialised auction of the Australian King George
V Sideface issues. The Georgian Heads are one of the
most popular series of stamps for specialist Australian
collectors. This series has many printing plates and flaws,
including some spectacular cracked electros and retouches,
a wide variety of watermark errors, imprints and
monograms, paper and shade varieties and combination
errors. The last section of the sale contains a wonderful
array of Geogian Heads, mainly 1d Reds, on WWI related
postal history.
The Georgian Heads are Australia’s most studied stamps
and we will have much of the current literature in this area
available for sale, on the day. The new Brusden White King
George V catalogue has now been printed and we now
have copies available for sale. A list of the available books
is at the end of this page. This auction has a number of
vendors who we would like to thank, however the 1½d Die
I collection from Pericles deserves special mention. The
breadth of material in this collection is amazing for both its
rarities and for the research that has been done. The sheer
breadth of cracked electros being offered could justifiably
have enabled us to subtitle this as the Cracked Electro
Auction. For collectors of this stamp, and it’s postal history,
this is a wonderful opportunity to add to your collection.

What’s News at Premier Postal Auctions - Auction #127 ended 10th August
Auction #127 - World Postal Auction!
Sunday 10th August 2014,
Welcome to Auction
127 our fourth auction
for 2014. This auction
offered our usual wide
choice of lots, with over
3,750 lots there is
plenty to choose from.
Quite a few of
postmark collectors use
the FREE Post Office
Reference Database on
our website. This lists all
the POs from Victoria
and most of the ones
from the other states. A
search facility is provided to enable you to search on
part names, both within a state and across all states.
Collectors of Victorian datestamps can also pay an
annual subscription of $55 to access our detailed
Victorian Postmark Database. This section is now been
completed through to the Zs including the Melbournes.
We are starting to include images and as I write this,
we are up to Bonnie Doon. Also the Melbournes,
Reliefs and TPOs have already been done. It will
obviously take quite a while to get all of the 36,000+
postmarks scanned and updated. For those who collect
Victorian postmarks this is a wonderful resource. To
subscribe simply go to our website, select Reference
Tools from the top left menus and then select Victorian
Datestamps. There is a Subscribe link in the welcome
line, click on this and just fill in your details. Otherwise,
simply enter https://www.premierpostal.com/cgi-bin/
wsProd.sh/viewfeewrapper.w? in your search engine
www.apta.com.au
address field.
Our on-line bidders will be pleased to know that our
new live-bidding screen seems to be working well. If
you haven't used it yet then give it a try. To bid live
online go to the website and log in with your Client
Code and Password. Ten minutes before the auction
starts an Open Auction Live Bidding window link will
appear below the image of the catalogue front page.
Simply click on this and you will be ready to go. The
pop-up window displays the last lot sold, the current lot
and the next two lots. If you have already placed bids
then these lots will be displayed in a bold font. A bid
button will be displayed below the current lot number
to bid at the next bid step. This button disappears
when you have the top bid or when the auctioneer has
stopped accepting bids. Use the View Bidsheet menu
on the top right of the home page to review or place
bids for later lots. This screen will also show you the
total value of your successful bids to help you manage
your budget.
Remember that we only sell lots that have bids already
placed on them and therefore the pop-up window will
only show and allow bidding on those lots. To ensure a
lot appears you will need to place some sort of initial
bid on the lot, even if it is a below reserve bid. Our
clients who have access to the internet should also take
time to review our retail lots. There are over 20,000
items which can be accessed and searched for in the
same way the auctions can. If you have your collecting
interests set up these will also work on the retail list
ensuring you can access them as efficiently as possible.
Please ensure that you confirm your order once you
have finalised the items you wish to purchase. Our
website provides many different ways of viewing those
items or areas in the auction that interest you the
most. We provide a standard selection in lot order,
searching by topic (over 250 of them) or by country
and searching by your collecting interests or a
description search. Our Image Gallery enables you to
just browse through the pictures and likewise you can
also use the Image Gallery to just view the items that
match your collecting interests. To help with your
specific collecting interests and to find the lots that
interest you, we provide an extract service. This service
saves you time and helps to keep our costs down.
Simply provide us with your collecting interests. You
can specify whether you just collect stamps, postal
history or postal stationery, whether you collect mint or
used, what periods you collect, what countries you
collect etc. You can be quite detailed. In nearly all
cases we can provide an extract which is well matched
to your collecting needs.
The most effective way of bidding is to use our secure
website www.premierpostal.com. However you can
also phone your bids through if you prefer. We take
bids any way they come. If you have any questions at
all please feel free to contact us so that we can help
you. Naturally if you do not want to receive these
emails (about 20 per year) then simply ask us to
remove you from our email list.
Kind regards, David at Premier Postal Auctions

What’s News at Prestige Philately - Public Auctions 193, 194, 195 on 15th August
Prestige Philately has been voted 5 times
APTA’s ‘Auction House of the Year’
Current General Public Auction 193
Current Auction 194 - British Empire
Current Public Auction 195 - Nauru
Friday 15 August 2014, from noon
GENERAL AUCTION #193:
This is a very wide-ranging sale but I can’t say there’s
something for everyone, because most of the British
Empire material is in the following auction.
Nonetheless, if you collect Australia, Australian
Colonies, our Territories or foreign countries, then you
can expect to find something of interest in the General
Auction. This month marks the centenary of the issue
of Australia’s iconic King George V Heads. To
celebrate this important anniversary, we present a
lovely array of quality KGV material with numerous
large blocks and even complete panes and sheets of
Penny Reds.
As usual, we have a wonderfully strong section from
the Australian Colonies. Features are Classic New
South Wales, Victorian Laureates and Revenues, and
a terrific section of the Large Stamp Duty issues
highlighted by an unused set of the extraordinary
Ultra High Values (possibly the only complete set in
existence). A long-time client in Japan has contributed
collections of New Guinea and Papua postal history
that he put together mainly in the 1970s and 1980s.
There are many fine items that haven’t seen the light
of day for decades.
For something completely different, we are pleased to
offer the very fine collection of Saudi Arabia formed by
the late Dr Kevin Murphy from Perth. There are lots
of decidedly rare stamps here but because Saudi
Arabia isn’t British Guiana, the estimates are very
attractive.
BRITISH EMPIRE #194: kicking off at
3.30pm
This auction came about largely as the result of local
collector Jim Mathieson consigning his very extensive
collection to us for sale. Probably two-thirds of the lots
are from this source.
Featured sections are the South Atlantic Islands and
the British West Indies. We also have a strong Great
Britain section that includes a remarkable array of
plating studies of issues of Queen Victoria’s reign, and
our recent discovery of an 1840 House of Lords 1d
Envelope. Malaya features Straits Settlements postal
history and Chalons are a strength of the almost 100
lots of New Zealand on offer.
Please note that there is some Empire content in the
miscellaneous lots at the beginning of the general
auction.
Pictorials.
However, the best developed field is the Overprints on
Great Britain, featuring many items formerly in Keith
Buckingham’s collection. There are Albino Overprints
in abundance, the famous ‘NAUP.U’ varieties on most
values, a good offering of control blocks, and a very
attractive group of Seahorses. The postal history
includes a number of very rare instructional and
censor markings, a registered All Up airmail cover,
two Japanese Occupation items, a cover from the reoccupying Australian Forces, and a large parcel piece
with a pair of the 5/- Map.
If you have never attended one of our sales, you won’t
know what a different experience it is. All our visitors,
whether from suburban Melbourne, country, interstate
or overseas, are made to feel right at home. And if
you are bored stiff by auctions moving at snail’s pace
because of “live” internet bidding, you will be
delighted to know that we have retained the
traditional auction room excitement that we all grew
up with. Which is why our auction room is usually
packed, and why so many people listen to the audio
feed over the internet. It’s also why so many people
are enthusiastic about coming to Boronia on a regular
basis. Please note that if you wish to participate in
any of the three auctions by phone, you should make
your arrangements as soon as possible. Click here
