If it’s too good to be true; it probably is—beware of scams
The
Crosby
Police
Department handled approximately 70 calls between Sept.
29 and Oct. 5. Officers responded to the following calls:
On Sept. 29:
—Officers checked on a
business on First Street SE and
all appeared okay. Officers
secured business and completed
report.
—Officers received a report
of a juvenile male runaway
from a residence on Erie
Avenue. An officer checked various locations for the juvenile
but was unable to locate at that
time. Juvenile was listed as a
runaway.
—An officer received a
report of a suspicious male and
vehicle on the 200 block of
Second Street NE. The officer
responded and checked the area
for the male and described vehicle but was unable to locate
either. Officers will monitor
area.
—Officers received a report
of a female juvenile runaway
from the area of Third Street
SW. Officers checked various
possible locations for the juvenile and subsequently located
her on Winona Avenue. The
juvenile was transported to her
residence and left in the custody
of parents. A juvenile male was
located as well, and the officer
learned this juvenile was in violation of conditions of probation. This juvenile was placed
under arrest for Probation
Violation and he was transported to Crow Wing County Jail.
—Officers received a report
of a set of keys possibly lost in
the area of East Main Street and
Cross Avenue.
—Officers received a report
of a theft of items from a boat
trailer parked in a residential
yard on Third Street SW. Loss
information was received and a
report generated.
—An officer was on routine
patrol on the 1000 block of
Fourth Street SW when they
observed a juvenile male runaway. Upon seeing the officer,
the juvenile male ran. A while
later, officers responded to a residence on Erie Avenue where
the juvenile male was located
and placed under arrest for fleeing from police, obstructing
legal process with force, and for
the runaway status/violation of
conditions of probation. The
male was transported to Crow
Wing County Jail.
—An officer responded to
Third Street SW and assisted a
motorist who was having vehicle problems.
—Officers received a report
of a fraudulent check that was
mailed to a Crosby resident in
an amount of over $2,000. The
situation/check is a known scam
where the person who receives
the check is asked to send back
a Money Gram to cover a portion of the “cost” involved. No
loss occurred to this resident
other than a minor bank charge.
—An officer responded to a
residence on West Main Street
on a loud music complaint. The
officer made contact with a resident who apologized and
turned the music down.
—Officers responded to a
residence on West Main Street
after being dispatched to a
domestic assault which just
occurred there. Officers made
contact with three individuals,
received information, and subsequently placed them all under
arrest for Domestic Assault.
Officers transported Steven
Lane Bollman, 44 of Crosby,
Ronda Marie Erickson, 42, of
Crosby and Alisha-Jo Elizabeth
Peterson, 21, of Crosby to Crow
Wing County Jail. Reports submitted to Crow Wing County
Attorney’s Office.
—An officer responded to
Second Avenue NE after receiving a driving complaint involving vehicles from a nearby residence that are driving through
grass on a vacant lot and are
continuously revving their
engines. Officer checked the
residence but was unable to
make contact at that time.
Officer will continue to attempt
contact to advise.
—Officers responded to
Third Street NE after receiving
a call from a resident who stated
they believe a male is outside
and harassing them. Officers
checked the entire area but were
unable to locate anything
unusual. Officers started a
report and will monitor area
routinely.
Answers
On Sept. 30:
—An officer responded to a
building on Third Avenue SW
after receiving an alarm call
there. The oifficer checked
building and all appeared secure.
—An officer received a call
reference some concerning postings on a social media Web site
that the caller wanted documented. Officer made contact with
the individual doing the postings, secured photos of the postings, and advised.
—Officers were dispatched
to a call of a disturbance involving an intoxicated male. Officers
arrived, received details of what
had occurred, and subsequently
placed Chad Jon Naslund, 41, of
Crosby, under arrest for
Domestic Assault. Naslund was
transported to Crow Wing
County Jail.
—Officers responded to
County Road 12 and Nelson
Road, Ironton and assisted the
Crow Wing County Sheriff’s
Department in searching the area
for male who had fled from
deputies on foot. Officers were
unable to locate the individual at
that time.
—An officer responded to
First Street NE after receiving a
call of some kids climbing on the
train car of the Soo Line Depot
Museum. The officer made contact with six kids who were
climbing on the car and advised
all. All were identified and sent
home.
—An officer responded to
the 200 block of First Street SE
after receiving a complaint of
vehicles parking in unauthorized
areas. The officer made contact
with the driver of one vehicle
and advised. Driver stated he
would also pass on the information to his co-workers.
—Officers again responded
to the area of North Nelson Road
after receiving a call that the person Crow Wing County
Deputies were chasing earlier
was now at a residence in the
area and looking for a ride.
Officers assisted in apprehension of the subject.
On Oct. 1:
—An officer responded to a
residence on Fourth Street NE
and assisted ambulance on a
medical call. One person was
transported to CRMC via ambulance.
—Officers received a report
of vehicles parked in a residential parking only area on First
Street SE. Officer checked the
area and subsequently issued
written warnings on two vehicles. The officer issued verbal
warnings to two other drivers
and workers in the area.
—Officers received a report
of a vehicle parked in a handicapped parking spot in a lot off
of the 400 block of Third Avenue
NE. An officer located the vehicle and noted a handicapped
placard displayed inside of the
vehicle. Vehicle information
documented in a report.
—An officer responded to
Poplar Street after receiving a
request to check the welfare of a
juvenile female who was possibly ill and could not be located.
The officer checked area and a
short time later was canceled as
the female had been safely located.
—An officer responded to a
business on Third Avenue SW
after receiving a report of a
theft/shoplifting incident that
just occurred there. The officer
was en route and updated that
the suspect was now on Second
Street SW and Fifth Avenue,
where the employee had followed them. The officer made
contact with the suspect and
employee. The officer obtained
details of what occurred along
with a long list of items the suspect had taken from the store
without paying for them. The
suspect was identified as Terry
Donald Carlson, 50, of Elk
River. Carlson was issued a citation for theft and then was transported to where he was currently
residing.
—An officer responded to
Eighth Avenue, Ironton to assist
the
Deerwood
Police
Department on a call to check
the welfare of an individual at a
residence there. The officer
assisted. One person was transported to CRMC via ambulance.
—Officers responded to a
domestic disturbance/argument
and possible fight call at a residence on West Main Street.
Officers made contact with several individuals, obtained details
of the situation, and advised all
to separate for the night to cool
down.
—Officers responded to a
medical call/disturbance at a
building on East Main Street and
assisted staff. One person was
transported for medical care.
—Officers received a report
from a resident on First Avenue
SW that someone had vandalized their building. No permanent damage occurred. Officers
documented details of the event
and will be providing extra
patrol to the area.
On Oct. 2:
—Crow Wing County dispatched officers to the 200 block
of Third Street NE on a report
that a vehicle was running outside for a long period of time.
Officers responded and checked
the area but were unable to
locate any vehicles running.
—Officers responded to a
business on Fourth Street and
assisted on an alarm call.
Officers made contact with
employees and learned all was
okay.
—Officers responded to a
residence on Third Street NE
after receiving a disturbance/
suspicious person call there.
Officers obtained details from
the caller and checked the area
but all appeared okay.
—Officers responded to a
two-vehicle accident (one being
a semi-truck) on East Main
Street near Hallett Avenue. One
person sustained injuries and
was transported to CRMC via
ambulance. Officers obtained
vehicle, driver and witness information, took photographs of
damage, and generated reports.
One vehicle was towed. State
Patrol Officers assisted at the
scene.
—Officers received a report
of a theft of a front license plate
from a vehicle parked in the
parking lot of a business on East
Main Street. Report generated
and entered into NCIC.
—Officers received a parking complaint on the 200 block
of First Street SE. Officer
checked the area for described
vehicle but was unable to locate
it at the time.
—Officers responded to a
residence on Third Street NE
after receiving a request to check
the welfare of an individual
there. Officers made contact
with the person, received further
details of the situation, advised,
and submitted a report to Social
Services to follow up on.
—At approximately 10:45
p.m. officers responded to a
business on Oak Street on a
report of an assault that had just
occurred there. Officers made
contact with two females who
were involved in a fight/assault.
Officers also met with some witnesses at the scene. Officers
obtained details of what had
occurred, and subsequently
placed Kathleen Etta Kounkel,
56, of Staples, under arrest for
fifth degree assault. A second
female was issued a City of
Crosby Administrative Citation
for Public Nuisance and she was
released to go home. Kounkel
was transported to Crow Wing
County Jail and reports submitted.
On Oct. 3:
—Crow Wing County dispatched officers to an alarm call
at a building on Third Avenue
SW. Officers checked the exterior of the building and all
appeared secure.
—Crow Wing County dispatched an officer to a residence
on Irene Avenue, Ironton to
assist Crow Wing County
Sheriff’s Department on a call of
a fight. Officers made contact
with those involved, received
information that they were in an
argument over a property dispute, and all were advised.
—Officers received a report
of a vehicle that went through a
pedestrian crosswalk without
stopping for pedestrians. The
vehicle was described as a red
Ford Escape. Officers will monitor.
—Crow Wing County dispatched an officer to respond to
Poplar Street on a disturbance
call. The officer responded and
made contact with those
involved, learning that this was a
civil child custody dispute. The
officer advised all on options
and documented the incident in a
report. Situation was resolved at
this time.
—An officer responded to a
call on Heartwood Drive and
assisted a motorist who was having vehicle problems there.
—An officer responded to
West Main Street and assisted
another motorist who was having vehicle difficulties.
—Late in the evening, officers were dispatched by Crow
Wing County to a possible
prowler on Winona Avenue.
While en route, officers were
cancelled as the caller found out
it was a friend of theirs. All okay.
—An officer responded to a
residence on East Main Street
along with ambulance on a medical call.
—An officer responded to a
residence on First Street NW
after receiving a call that the
homeowner was hearing banging around their house for the
last 40 hours. Officer checked
and noticed a loose rain gutter on
the side of the house. Officer
secured the down spout and all
was well in the world.
On Oct. 4:
—An officer assisted with
traffic control for a funeral procession from Fourth Street SW.
—Officers responded to
County Road 12 and assisted the
Sheriff’s Department and
Deerwood Police Department
on a domestic disturbance call
there.
—An officer responded to a
disturbance/possible fight brewing call at a business on Oak
Street. The officer made contact
with one individual involved in
the argument who stated the
other person had left. The officer
advised and checked the area but
was unable to locate the second
person at that time. A very short
time later, the officer was called
back to the business as the second person, who was intoxicated, had returned. The officer
located the individual a short distance away and advised them to
not to return to the business and
to call it a night.
—An officer received a
report from a resident on Third
Avenue NW that they were
evicting a roommate and
requested details of the situation
on file in the event of future
repercussions.
—Officers responded to a
residence on Fifth Street NE
along with ambulance on a medical call and assisted. One person
was transported via ambulance
to CRMC.
On Oct. 5:
—At approximately 12:15
a.m. officers responded to a
domestic disturbance at a residence on West Main Street. The
officers spoke with both individuals involved, received details of
the situation, and advised. One
person left the residence for the
night.
—Officers responded to a
residence on Heartwood Drive
along with ambulance on a medical call and assisted. One person
was transported via ambulance
to CRMC.
—Officers received a call of
a possible suspicious vehicle in
Crosby Memorial Park on
Serpent Lake. Description was
received and officer checked on
the vehicle, which was unoccupied at the time. The officer
received information and determined all to be okay. Caller was
advised.
—An officer responded to a
residence on Howard Avenue
and attempted to serve a trespass
notice to a juvenile male there
stemming from a prior theft/
shoplifting incident at a business
in Crosby. The officer was
unable to locate the juvenile but
did finally make contact and
advised later in the evening.
—Officers received a
request from an employee of a
business on West Main Street to
check the welfare of a male who
had came into the store. The officer, along with a Deerwood officer, made contact with the male
at his residence on Fourth Street,
Ironton and all checked out
okay.
—Officers responded to a
building on East Main Street
after receiving a request to assist
an Aitkin County Deputy with
an individual who may be combative there. Officers responded
and assisted. All was okay.
CITATIONS/ADMINISTRATIVE CITATIONS/
WRITTEN and VERBAL
WARNINGS
The following warnings and
citations were issued during the
week: four for speeding; three
for an equipment violation; one
for a stop sign violation and one
for no headlights.
ANIMAL PROBLEMS:
There were the following
animal problems during the
week: Numerous cats were
reported at a residence on Poplar
Street. Officers contacted CWC
Animal Control and also made
contact with the owner of the
cats. The owner was subsequently issued Crosby Administrative
Citations for Animal At Large
and Too Many Animals in a residence; loose dogs in Crosby
Memorial Park on Serpent Lake
and a dog running loose without
a lease in the park.
Overdue hunter
found in woods
Sheriff Todd Dahl reported missing hunter, 76 year old
Glenn Huff of Garrison, was
located. While conducting a
coordinated search in the area
in which Huff was reported to
be hunting, Huff and his dog
walked up to Crow Wing
county Sheriff’s Deputies.
Huff stated he became
disoriented while hunting late
in the afternoon and was
unsure of his whereabouts.
Instead of causing the situation to become worse, Huff
stated he hunkered down with
his dog for the night and at
first light started to make his
way back to his vehicle.
Deputies reported Huff’s
condition was excellent and
did not suffer any injuries or
medical conditions due to the
incident. Sheriff Dahl would
like to extend the department’s appreciation to all the
emergency services who
assisted in the search.
Weekly DNR report…
Some hunters bagging limits
Activity
this
week
focused around the first week
of
the
duck
season.
Numerous waterfowl hunters
were checked throughout the
week with success ranging
from limits to no ducks taken
per hunter.
Other activity
included responding to issues
of deer baiting, trespass,
checking fishing and bow
deer hunting activity, and
working a deer shining detail
with other area officers.
Enforcement contacts were
made for duck hunters with no
PFDs, unplugged shotgun,
and toxic shot.

Motorcyclist killed in crash
The Minnesota State
Patrol reported a vehicle
crash which resulted in a
fatality on Sunday evening,
Oct. 5 on Highway 6 and Bay
Drive South near Emily.
James Buland, 30, of Elk
River was killed in the crash.
A truck driven by Jane
Schlagel, 50, of Blaine was
traveling southbound on
Highway 6 and moved into
the northbound lane to pass
another vehicle. A motorcycle
driven by Buland was traveling northbound with no lights
on. The motorcycle struck the
passenger front and side of
the truck. Schlagel was not
injured.
A passenger in the truck,
Bradley Schlagel, 49, of
Blaine, was also not injured.

Emily Fire Department assisted at the scene.
Fugitive arrested
Sheriff Todd Dahl’s office
reported
Dustin
Adam
Cummings was arrested Oct. 1.
Dahl had requested the public’s help in locating Cummings
when Cummings failed to
appear in court on a fifth degree
drug charge. Cummings is also
a suspect in several Crow Wing
County burglaries.

—Harrassing communications were reported at
Mahnomen Mine Pit #1 near
Ironton.
—A theft of a gas tank from
a pontoon was reported on
Linden Street near Garrison.
—A disturbance was
reported on County Road 116
near Merrifield.
On Sept. 27:
—A noise complaint was
received from near Highway
210 and County Road 12 near
Ironton.
—A report of trespassing
was received from Caribou
Street in Trommald.
—An open door was
reported on Highway 169 near
Garrison.
—A driving complaint was
reported on Highway 6 and
County Road 30 near Crosby.
—Property was found on
Monroe Street in Garrison.
—A property damage accident was reported in a parking
lot on State Highway 6 in
Emily.
—A theft was reported on
Viola Avenue in Ironton.
—A theft of gasoline was
reported at the SuperAmerica
on Highway 169 in Garrison.
—Suspicious activity was
reported on County Road 3 near
Merrifield.
—A theft of a double kayak
was reported from Bald Eagle
Drive near Ironton. It was later
found.
—Suspicious activity was

Emily.
—A burning complaint was
received from County Road 30

—An alarm was reported on

On Sept. 29:
—A report of a juvenile runaway was received from Irene

boat floating on Rabbit Lake
was received.
—A concern for a vulnerable adult was received from
Damsgaard

—A fraud was reported on

—A suspicious vehicle was

—A theft was reported on

—An alarm was reported in

Political sign rules
Question: I’m starting to
see political signs pop up all
over along the highways.
What are the rules with
these? Thanks!
Answer: Placement of
campaign signs in state highway rights-of-way is prohibited under MN State Statute
160.27. In addition, campaign signs may not be placed
on private property outside of
the right-of-way limits without landowner consent.
Highway rights-of-way
include the driving lanes,
inside and outside shoulders,
ditches and sight corners at
intersections. Signs in violation will be removed and
impounded at one of the local
Minnesota Department of
Transportation
(MnDOT)
maintenance truck stations.
Violation of the law is a
misdemeanor. Civil penalties
also may apply if the placement of a sign contributes to a
motor vehicle crash and
injures a person, or damages a
motor vehicle that runs off the
road.
In addition, the
Minnesota
Outdoor
Advertising Control Act (MN
State Statute 173.15) prohibits
erecting advertising on public
utility poles, trees and shrubs,
and painting or drawing on
rocks or natural features.
These laws are administered in a fair and impartial
manner. Political campaign
signs are treated in the same
way as any other signs wrongly placed on state highway
property by businesses,
churches, private citizens or
charitable groups. For information regarding the proper
placement of campaign signs
or where to find signs that
have been removed, contact
your local MnDOT office.
