the office by October 13th so that we can
plan accordingly. Thanks to the Directors

El Zagal Continues With Renewal On All Fronts
It’s fall! The busy
summer season has
come to an end
and we are moving
into the time of
year where our
snowbirds begin
to high tail it for
warmer climates
and the rest of us
hunker down for
what is to come.
This summer, we were able to install a new air
conditioning unit in the Shrine Center and have
negotiated with our major tenants in Noble
Office Park.
The lower level ceiling is being replaced as I
write and should be completed by the time you
read this. Our facility is slowly but surely being
brought into the 21st century. While more work
needs to be done, it is good to have most of the
“bones” of our building in good repair. There are
still some major projects to attend to and your
Divan is working on the next steps.
Work should begin on the levee project soon.
The plan is to raise and extend the levee to the
northwest portion of our property. A major
redesign of El Zagal Golf Course is already
underway and should be completed early next
summer. The project will eliminate the sump
pump in the east patio area and connect our
parking lot storm sewer into the city system.
This will eliminate the need for us to remove and
install the pump each season. I suspect that no
one will miss that task. When complete, we will
have flood protection at least three feet higher
than we currently have.
Membership is your number one priority and I
appreciate those who have taken the initiative
to bring in new members to El Zagal. This is an
ongoing task that requires everyone’s help.
I am encouraged by the progress we have
made under the leadership of our Membership
Chair, Drew Likness. Be sure to thank him for
his efforts every chance you get! If your unit is
struggling with getting new members, please
meet with Drew to develop a plan.
The new young Shriner’ organization, YOSHI,
is off to a good start with Dennis Sand at the
helm. What a great opportunity to have social
networking for all young members! If you are
interested in joining, give Dennis a call.
What a great year this has been. Our first
125 years has been a great ride. We still have
commemorative money clips, ladies pins,
and history books available. Please support
our organization by purchasing your 125th
memorabilia. Contact your Assistant Rabban,
Brad Richards, to get your piece of history!

Big Iron
A “TIP OF THE OLE FEZ” goes out to the
Nobles who helped tend the gates at Big Iron.
It was a cold and miserable 3 days with wind,
rain and cold temps. But the great Nobles of El
Zagal prevailed. PP Dave Rott even had heated
gloves, (PANSY).
Big Iron is a display of the latest farm equipment
featuring every type of farm equipment and
related sophisticated, computerized accessories.
It was awesome.
This event is held at the Red River Valley
Fairgrounds every year. It attracts people from
far and wide, including foreign countries.
El Zagal Camel Tales
The funds generated from this event goes to the
Hospital Dads which provides funds for Shrine
Hospital screening clinics and other events that
promote the Shrine Hospital.
Thanks again to the Nobles who helped man
the gates.

Well, the competing season is over for our
motorcycles. We made a proud showing at
Midwest. We rode the best routine that we
could that day. The only bad thing was we came
up short.
El Riad put on an amazing Midwest for us all
and spared nothing. It was 1st class all the way!
They of course won. We tip our hats to them.
They drove a fantastic routine!

We bet the EMP’s as to who would beat the
other in overall standing. As men of our word,
we paid off our wager immediately!

our Nobles. The biggest hurt was his pride. He
now will be called “Kitty”. He has also lost his

away for winter, I want to thank all our Nobles

Fall is in the air, are you ready for some
Football? The Provost are, and we have sold out
the Vikings Board for the Transportation Fund
again. Nice job Dave.
If only the Vikes could do well this year. My
thought is, since I made a bet with Chief of
Provost, Tom Staiger, on who would have a
better season, Vikings or Packers, and since I
usually don’t win these things, the Vikings have
a chance. Then again GO PACK! GO!
Along with that, the other successful Green &
Gold Team in the area, the NDSU Bison, are
off to a great start again this season. I’m sure
there are a few fellow Shriner’s that attend these
games. And what goes with Football? Right! beer. The
50th annual Bierstube is in the books. Another
successful stube pulled off by the Provost. 51
can only get better. If you think about it, a good
majority of the Provost were under age when
the first one was put on and some were not even
born yet. --- Way to go Jeff Woods and team,
leading us to another victory.
Just think 49 years ago they thought maybe we
shouldn’t do the Bierstube. And now it went so
well we blew the ceiling off of the downstairs
dining room. It is now in the process of being
redone.
The only thing left to comment on is the S&L
PRO / AM, and with that, I will say I think the
Provost had a great time.

We Are Giving It Our Best, To Make It The Best
Dear Nobles, Yes, believe it or not, the President
is actually writing a note in here for once.
Figured I better get off the stick once since we
have the Fall Ceremonial here. Thank God I
have one of the greatest secretaries that always
does this for me. THANKS RON, you’re the
BEST.
Well down to business, the Fall Ceremonial.
We have been told that, with everything we
have going on, we actually have a mini MSA.
NO, don’t get any wise ideas about us hosting
that one day, not happening.
The Nobles have a Golf Scramble on Friday
afternoon, and wine tasting for the women at
the AmericInn, (that should be interesting, get
ready guys).
Later on a great buffet at the Eagles followed
by a dance with the El Riad Shriner’s “Last
Call” band. I have heard these guys a half dozen
times now and they are great. They play a great
selection overall for ALL age groups.
Then on Saturday, all the usual Shriner
events, a parade in conjunction with VCSU
Homecoming at 10:30 am.and
After that, a Ladies division with some
great entertainment and a luncheon at the
Chautauqua Park Pavilion and Moslem Feast
for the men at the Eagles. In addition to this, is
a Guided Bus Tour up and down the Sheyenne
Valley Byway/Backway in the afternoon. Also,
Marketplace at the Eagles from 10am -2:30pm.
On Saturday evening, a banquet at the Eagles
with special guests, the Chief of Anesthesiology
from the Minneapolis Hospital, and about 5
patients and former patients. One of which will
be Lexus Haut, performing on the piano for us
during the Banquet.
After the banquet there will be a dance with El
Riad’s “Last Call” band performing once again.
Then to top it all off, there will be a Free Will
offering pancake and sausage breakfast at the
Masonic Hall on Sunday morning from 8am10:30am. We do not want anyone to go away
hungry after a weekend like this. We have the
reputation of having the best darn cakes for
many a counties around.
Also we have things going on for the younger
ones with games and a Pizza party on Saturday.
It is a family event. We need to get them started
early, that is how we can retain members.
C’mon on all you units out there. Help make
this one of the best Ceremonials in many years.
As you all know this is the 140th of Shriner’s
and the 125th of El Zagal Anniversaries.
One of the main reasons for having it here is the
central location. Neither East, nor West, can say
it is too far to go. Besides, there has never been a
Ceremonial hosted in Valley City before; we are
trying our best to do it up right.
We are one of the smallest units, so this is quite
a load and a test for us. BUT it is coming along
very well, (thanks to our Ladies for all their help,
we couldn’t do it without them). THANKS
LADIES !! They have been great.
With that all said, I hope you all can make it
to the ceremonial. If anyone has any questions,

to answer them. If I can’t, I’ll do my best to
make it sound good.

Meeting Our Brothers Across
the Midwest
Hello Fellow Nobles! The Arab Patrol had a
Grrrrreat time during our hospital trip with the
Viking Unit. I encourage everyone to tour one
of our Hospitals.
We also brought down a wheel chair to donate
to the Hospital; from the Arab, and Viking
Patrol. Thanks to Mike Dow from our DIVAN
for installing new tires on the chair. Someone
will get good use of it. Also thanks to Rocky
Rockswold for organizing a Hospitality and
Fellowship room at the hotel for the Trip.
The Ulen parade was a success. While there,
the Patrol met with the men of Kem Shrine
and local, poor FARMERS. Our jumper car
drivers’ fellowshipped with them at the Viking
Museum in Ulen.

Patrol at M.S.A. Thank you to them!
I was gone most of the month due to training
for work in Oklahoma City. I missed out on a
lot of good times. I am kinda bummed. It must
have been great to connect with other units and
friends from across the Midwest. What a great

MSA in Sioux Falls, SD. The band played at
both parades and competition on Friday at the
fairgrounds.
There were Oriental Bands from Winnipeg,
MB; Sioux Falls, SD; Sioux City, IA; and Fargo,
ND. It was a good time getting together with
our Brothers. We had an outing on Friday
night and it was well attended. We also enjoyed
listening to the El Riad steel drums and Hillbilly
Band.
I hope many will attend the fall ceremonial in
Valley City and show our support for the Valley
City Flag Corp.
I want to thank the Jamestown Shrine Club
for putting on another memorable Bob Lucy
Fish Fry. In addition, I would like to thank our
Divan members who showed up at the fish fry.
Hopefully, next year we will be back with more
Nobles and Ladies from the East and the West.
I want to thank our unit members and ladies
that attended the Looney Days Parade in
Vergas, MN.
We still have need for more nobles to join our
unit; check us out. We are looking into new
uniforms and would like to order one for you.

Bismarck Dusters
Dazzling Displays, Colorful Fall Events
Summer seems to be winding down for the
Dusters, but it was a good summer. The
Dusters did static car displays for nursing
homes, did old car taxi jobs for Highway
engineers, had fun social events, participated
in fundraising for the Robert Asker Speech
Clinic, had regular meetings all summer, and
held monthly Duster Socials.

A 125th Anniversary Flashback: 1979
Illustrious Sir William R. Wedberg was the
Potentate of El Zagal Shrine. The Midwest
Shrine association meeting was hosted by
Khartum Temple in Winnipeg and the
Imperial Session was held in Minneapolis.
The Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children
raised the maximum age for admission for
both the orthopedic and burns hospitals from
16 to 18.
The 28th Annual Shrine Circus, Chaired
by Merle Gullickson, held at the NDSU
Fieldhouse, Bismarck Civic Center and the
Jamestown Civic Center, featured the Clyde
Bros. Circus.
The 6th Annual Shrine Game, won by the North
team, was played at the UND football stadium
featuring 40 selected players for each team.
The Mobil Nobles sponsored their 12th
Annual Spaghetti and Meat Ball Dinner.
Chuck Munro was elected president of the
Big Band and played with the El Zagal
Pote’s Notes and “is most enthusiastic about
the unit”. Washburn Wheelers were in their
fourth year of operation. The Mandan Indians
sponsored the 6th Annual Charity Trap
Shoot at the Capital City Gun Club north of
Bismarck.
Homecoming events being held on the
same day, the Arab Patrol, Escort Patrol, and
Mobil Nobles participated in the NDSU
homecoming parade and the Vikings,
Oriental Band, and the Arab Patrol trick
car participated in the ND State School of
Science homecoming parade.
The Uniformed Units and Clubs Recognition
night was hosted by the Provost Guard. On
the menu for the evening was Cornish game
hen and the Potentate provided the wine.
The Escort Patrol escorted in the Potentate,
Divan, elected officers and their wives. The
Annual Meeting of the El Zagal Council
of Uniformed Units and Clubs – Western
Division was held at the Town House Motor
Inn in Bismarck. Plans were discussed for the
upcoming circus.
Color Guard Croonings
Well, wood tick season is almost over now,
so things are getting back to normal in the
lakes area – except for the wood ticks in the
Color Guard Club Rooms – still interesting
there! Judging by the bar inventory, there are
still some “suckers” around somewhere in the
Club Rooms!
Speaking of wood ticks, with the cooler days
and nights now, we have been forced to cancel
the planned nude swimming lesson party at
Brad and Barb Richards home. Brad has been
pushing for this all summer and even had
Barb talked into it. She got some really nice
diamonds out of the negotiations – that Brad
is really clever. Guess he will have to take
another run at it next summer. The crowd is
“shrinking” now due to the temperatures – if
you know what I mean!
I am proud to report that the Color Guard
Cruiser is all lettered up and is looking great!
Thanks to a great volunteer effort, we have
the bus looking like a true Shrine vehicle.
Especially thankful is Father Jerry Anderson
who insisted the windows be tinted so you
can’t see inside. Guess he has plans on hearing
confessions or something in the bus.
Our one and only Jerome Tappe is working
hard on membership for the Color Guard.
Jerome is tireless on attending meetings and
organizing membership events! He is doing a
bang up job! Last month he organized……..
oh that’s right, he was in jail last month. Well,
the month before that he organized……oh
wait, he was in Aruba that month. It was the
month before that he organized…….
oh wait……..NEVER MIND…..he is just a
wiz bang!!!
The Color Guard was invited to present
colors at the Bemidji Shrine Bowl, and we
had a great time! Thanks for the invite guys!
Imperial Sir was there and mentioned to me
that he has never seen such a well rounded
group of guys such as the Color Guard. I am
hoping he is talking about our talent and not
our waist sizes! Seriously tho, he mentioned
to me that he is pretty sure the Color Guard is
the greatest, most professional, most mature,
noble group he has ever come in contact with.
And the Unit President is one of his favorite
people. Smart man that Dale Staus is! Very
observant too!
I am writing this article in hopes that it makes
the Camel Tales. Seems last month, my article
was held out because I hadn’t paid the editor
the usual fee of $500. I was a bit behind on
The Sheyenne Valley Shrine Club hosted the
Pote’s Ball at the Valley City Eagles Club
and purchased a new Dodge van (referred to
in Camel Tales as a bus and also as a station
wagon ) that replaced their Volkswagen.
A Special Meeting was called for May 3,
1979, to discuss flood control for the Club
House. A representative of the City of Fargo
reported that the dike along Elm Street
would be moved 40 feet farther from the river
and built to a height of 34 feet and that El
Zagal would be assessed half of the expected
$80,000 construction costs.
If El Zagal built its own dike, there would be
no charge for the City dike. A 38 foot-level
earthen dike, 8 feet higher than the patio
level, at the east edge of the putting green was
proposed by Jack Fredrickson, President of
the El Zagal Board of Trustees. The proposal
passed unanimously. Construction took place
in July and August.

follow. You are always welcome and it is a
great time!
Remember, it is a great time to be a Shriner,
but there is nothing finer than a Color Guard
Shriner!
